View Full Version : The Free Online/MMO Game List

JubeiSaotome
21-05-2007, 06:45 PM
I'm hoping that this thread will be stickied. This is a list of free to play online games. I always like trying free online games, because they're a decent time waster, they may lack polish and depth, but some can pe fun for a few days.

If you know of any games that fit under this category, please list them in the same format I have below. Also, I haven't tried every single game here (Maybe 75% of them), so if you know more about a game that I've posted, feel free to correct me.

MMORPG
9 Dragons
Genre: MMORPG?
http://9dragons.acclaim.com/
An Acclaim MMO, it does have Acclaim advertisements at some parts of the game, usually when you log in you'll see the company logo, but only for a few seconds. Anyway, it's like Silkroad and the many other Chinese theme MMORPG, but it's done a lot better than most of them. I suggest checking this or Silkroad out first if you like the theme.

Anarchy Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.anarchy-online.com/
Anarchy Online (AO) is a science fiction MMORPG released in June 2001 by Funcom. It is one of the few popular MMORPGs that makes use of a science fiction setting as opposed to the more common fantasy setting. The game is set in the years following June 29475, predominantly on the harsh desert planet of Rubi-Ka and its extra-dimensional twin, the Shadowlands.

Conquer Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.conqueronline.com/
Korean RPG. Nuff Said similar to Silk Road etc.

Corum Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://corum.gpotato.com/
A MMO, which is heavily dungeon based. It's very bland and a huge grind.

Cronous
Genre: MMORPG
http://global.cronous.com/
A dark-style mmorpg based around character "growth". Apparently you gain exp by just attacking.

Dragon Gem
Genre: Side-scrolling MMORPG
http://www.dragongemworld.com/
Maple Story for people who like ugly characters.

Dungeon Runners
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.dungeonrunners.com/join_regular.html
An NCsoft game, that's free to play? WHOA! Anyway it's a generic dungeon crawler, but with NCsoft gloss. It's free to play, but there's an optional 5 bux a month fee for full content.

Eudemons Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.eudemonsonline.com/
Old style korean MMO, nothing special.

FlyFF: Fly for fun
Genre: MMORPG
http://flyff.gpotato.com/
A pretty standard MMORPG with hoverboards/broomsticks at lv20. It's nice, really, just that the grind kills it.

Goonzu Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://global.goonzu.com/
2d free mmo, ancient china theme, bizzare ecconomy system. It's alright for what it is, just the character design is really ugly.

Granado Espada
Genre: MMORPG
http://ge.iahgames.com/en/
This is a very unique MMO, where you control a 3 characters of different classes. Enemies are slightly weaker, but there are more of them. I found this game very overwhelming and tedious.

Hero Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://hero.netgame.com/
The gameplay's decent, but it's another one of those Asian grind games. I quit at level 5, but it's decently fun.

Kal Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.kalonline.com/
A dodgy martial arts mmorpg, it's asstastic.

Knight Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.knightonlineworld.com/
A generic medieval mmo. Horrible to look at and play.

Last Chaos
Genre: MMORPG
http://lastchaos.aeriagames.com/
3D medieval fantasy mmo, limited charactercreation options, uses the same engine as Lineage 2 and is a lot smaller. Has options for solo dungeons, with skills that attack multiple enemies. Guardian/trainer system & so on.

The Legend of Ares
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.legendofares.com/
The Legend of Ares is a free 3D, MMORPG game, revolving around the game are two nations which you will be choosing for your character, Holy Empire and Religious Alliance; four classes, Knight, Spearman, Archer and Sorcerer. To become a stronger character, you kill monsters for EXP (experience points) to level up. However, as you advance in levels, you will find yourself picking fights, not only with monsters, but with players of either country.
There are also guilds which give you several items such as cape(to look cool). They can also engage in guild wars where 2 guilds will fight each other. When you reach level 40, you can also help your country by joining territorial wars. This is not just a game about leveling, this is a game about winning for yourself, winning for your guild and winning for your nation.

Lunia
Genre: Action MMORPG
http://global.lunia.com/
This is an action MMORPG, think Diablo 2 crossed with a console action rpg. COntrols are simple and easliy bound to a control pad with a program such as Joy2Key.

Maple story
Genre: Side-scrolling MMORPG
http://www.mapleglobal.com/
2d side scrolling mmorpg, full of jump quests and 13 year olds. Kind of like wonderboy in monsterland.

Monarto Esprit
Genre: MMORPG
http://global.monatoesprit.com/ (Open in IE)
A standard cutesy 3d MMO, similar to rose online.

MU Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.muonline.com/
This game borrows heavily from Diablo2, Gui and all. It's pretty dated now, though.

Myth War Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.mythwaronline.com/index.php
A spirte-based mmorpg, very limited in customisation, but it has a deep skill system.

Nostale
Genre: MMORPG
http://game.nostale.com/nos_main.asp
A monster training MMO. Pokemon & Digimon-esque.

Pirate King Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.piratekingonline.com/
It's another one of those point and click Asian RPGs except the graphics are really bad, everything lags, and it's really boring. I quit before I finished talking to the first NPC standing near you.

Rappelz
Genre: MMORPG
http://rappelz.gpotato.com/
Early looking MMO, could be decent in future. Seems a bit watered down, though.

RYL (Risk Your Life)
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.ryl.com.my/
It's a little hard to get the client installed and everything running, but it's really fun and the graphics are pretty good.

Scions of Fate (Yulgang)
Genre: MMORPG
http://fate.netgame.com/
Alright, this is a real crappy and standard Korean MMO. Don't even bother trying it. It's even worse than most of them. Also, don't be fooled just because it's on the front of MMORPG.com or because many people play it.

Silkroad Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.silkroadonline.net/
A mmorpg set in old china. It's okay, but it lags like a bitch.

Survival Project
Genre: Top Down action RPG
http://www.survival.com.my
Although the game's closing down in March, there's an event going on that lets you buy cash stuff with ingame gold. It's a really unique and fun top-down PvP game with swords and guns. Don't be discouraged because I said top-down, this is the only top-down game I'd play. You can equip cards to change your damage and gold force(used to be a cash item) to increase various things. It's like playing on a private server for right now, so go on and try it.

Thang online
Genre: MMORPG
http://thang.ongameport.com/
Fully 3D adventure MMO that allows players to adjust various aspects of the game such as Ki (each player's power source), equipment, and special killing moves.

Travia
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.traviaglobal.com/
Chinese style mmo, same old crap of late.

Trickster Online
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.tricksteronline.com/
A furry MMORPG, has a digging system where you dig for cash and items. Very similar to Ragnarok Online.

Xiah
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.gamescampus.com/xiah/
Xiah is a martial arts oriental fantasy MMORPG. The game offers users four different classes to choose for their character build: The swordman, the mage, the warrior, and the ghostfighter. Players obtain martial arts books from bookstores or monster drops, and use these books to train their martial arts skills. Xiah has a very large and diverse playing field, along with a great variety of items to find, trade, sell, and buy.

MMOFPS
Planetside
Genre: MMOFPS
http://planetside.station.sony.com/
Planetside is a semi-free to play Futuristic MMOFPS. It's playable for free up to "Battle Rank 6".

Soldier Front
http://sfront.ijji.com/
A generic free to play FPS. Counter Strike for the poor man.

Warrock
Genre: MMOFPS
http://warrock.net/
A poor mans MMOFPS Battlefield 2. Enough said. It sucks.

Action
Bomb 'n' Dash
Genre: Action
http://www.bombndash.com/
The bastard child of Bomber Man and Poy Poy. Explosive arena-based action.

BOTS
Genre: Action
http://www.botsgame.com
An online game based around robot battles. It's run by Acclaim, so I don't know if it's really worth playing.

GunZ: the duel
Genre: 3rd/1st person action
http://gunz.ijji.com
Semi MMOFPS, it's pretty much a DM/TDM kind of game with a 3rd person view. It also has matrix-esque moves.

Infinity Online
Genre: 3rd person action
http://www.playinfinity.net/
A free to play MMO action game. Gameplay is similar in style to Rakion with separate game rooms for players to enter, and players have the option of using a mouse and keyboard or a controller to contol their character. There are both player versus player and mission modes where players cooperate to defeat AI enemies. The in-game currency is the luna.

Rakion
Genre: 3rd person action
http://rakion.softnyx.net/
Action fantasy game, it's pretty fun, but segmented into country servers.

RayCrash
Genre: Mech combat
http://www.atc-raycrash.net/
Ray Crash is a new action game where users could battle people all over the world. Ray Crash allows user customizable robots to do battle in several arenas in space and in cities in the near future. Be warned though, this is not your typical hack and slash game. This is a game where strategy actually plays a part in helping you win.

SupaSupa
Genre: Action
http://www.playsupa.com/
This is one of those entertaining PvP/PvM shooters that's really fun but feels very unprofessional. It's a great game if you can drag some people into a PvP match or live near Korea, even though it's in (INCREDIBLY broken) English.

Sports
Albatross 18 (Pangya)
Genre: Golf
http://www.albatross18.com/
The best mmo golf game around. Get it.

Freestyle Street Basketball
Genre: Basketball
http://freestyle.sierraonline.com/
Online 3 vs 3 basketball. You have your own character and you choose your position, then enjoy online basketball!
Note: Currently only available for US users. Look out for a global version.

Shot Online
Genre: Golf
http://www.shot-online.com/
http://shotonline.gpotato.com/
An unforgiving Golf MMO"RPG". This game is so simulation it hurts. I found it very unplayable, but if you perfer a deeper golfing experience, maybe check this out.

Space/Aerial-Based
Space Cowboy
Genre: MMO arcade flight sim
http://sco.gpotato.com/
Think starfox online. It's been compared to a free eve online. It's pretty awesome.

Subspace Continuum
Genre: PvP asteroids
http://www.getcontinuum.com/
SubSpace is a two-dimensional space shooter computer game published in 1997 by Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE). This freeware game incorporates quasi-realistic zero-friction physics into a massively multiplayer online game. The action is viewed from above, which presents challenges very different from those of a three-dimensional game. The game has no built-in story or set of goals; players may enter a variety of servers, each of which have differing objectives, maps, sounds, and graphics.

Although falling short of modern standards, SubSpace is widely considered an early entry in the massively multiplayer online genre due to its unprecedented player counts, as well as lead programmer Jeff Peterson's apparent coining of the term.

Strategy
Darkness & Light
Genre: MMORTS
http://global.onlinedal.com/
This game is an online RTS game. I can't comment much on this, seeing as I'm not a fan of RTS. Maybe someone could enlighten us on this game?

Dofus Arena
Genre: MMO Turn Based RPG
http://www.dofus-arena.com/?lang=en
A flash/shockwave based Turn Based Strategy PvP mmo.

Gunbound
Genre: Turn Based combat
http://gunbound.softnyx.net/
Pretty much a korean worms clone. Community is kind of annoying.

Naval/Water-Based
Navy Field
Genre: MMO Naval Tactics
http://www.navyfield.com/
a massively multiplayer online tactics simulation game based on World War II naval warfare by SD EnterNet.

Voyage Century
Genre: MMORPG
http://www.voyagecenturyonline.com/
Voyage Century is set in 16th century Earth and features accurate historical representations of several coastal cities. Players are given a choice between four career paths at the beginning of the game: explorer, merchant, craftsman, or warrior. This choice is vital to a character, since it greatly influences the playing style of the character for the rest of the game. Combat occurs both on land and on the sea, where players risk the threat of pirates when venturing further from the more populated areas.

Puzzle
Qro Qro
Genre: Online Block Shooting?
http://qroqro.bizpio.com/
An online "Block Shooting Game", from this title, I'd expect that it'd be some form of a frantic puzzle game.

Fighting
Kwon Ho
Genre: Online 3D Fighting
http://kwonho.ijji.com/
This is an online 3D fighting game, think Virtua Fighter online. Limited character creation options, but as the game draws closer to a grand opening, clothing is released to customize. You level up and purchase move sets.

Beat/Bemani
Audition
Genre: Beat
http://audition.nexon.net/
An online dance battle game. Plays similar to O2Jam, another bemani style beat game.

o2Jam
Genre: Beat
http://www.o2jam.com.my/
It's a music/reaction game similar to Beatmania. If you don't know what that is, relate it to Dance Dance Revolution. Some people like it, some people don't. The music's great, but I play it on and off. Avatars just look good, no stats, levels=skill, etc.

Racing
Kart Rider
Genre: Online Kart Racing
http://kart.nexon.net/
A very decent mario kart style online racer. Allows up to 8 people to race in a variety of modes, including item and speed races.

Misc
Entropa Universe
Genre: MMO Exploration?
http://www.project-entropia.com/
The Entropia Universe is more than a game. The Entropia Universe is for real. Real people, real activities and a Real Cash Economy in a massive online universe.

OZ
Genre: Casual online chat
http://oz.ongameport.com/
It's like habbo hotel meets a korean mmo, basically a MMO without a point.

Second Life
Genre: Casual online chat
http://www.secondlife.com/
This is an online world, where you can create anything, as long as you have the real world money to buy in game money. Strong ecconomy, full of furries and cyber goths and it looks like total crap. Avoid at all costs.

There
Genre: Casual online chat
http://www.there.com/
Like Habbo and secondlife, but without the customisation of second life.

Browser
MMORPG IN SHERWOOD FOREST
Genre: Browser
http://www.maidmarian.com/Sherwood.htm
Oh man, people need to try this just to see how hilarious it is. It's a shockwave MMO and the characters just look lol.
Verdict: Try it for lulz.

OGame
Genre: Browser Strategy
http://www.ogame.org/
Credit: Inquisitor
Another browser based strategy game. Seems the opposite of Tribal Wars, it's in space.

RuneScape
Genre: Browser MMORPG
http://www.runescape.com/
The best browser-based MMO out there, a very entry level MMORPG. Playerbase is mostly Kids to Young Teens.

Tribal Wars
Genre: Browser Strategy
http://www.tribalwars.net
Credit: etnlIcarus
Looks to be a browser based strategy game.

Games to look out for. (Soon to be english)
Mabinogi
Genre: MMORPG
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogi_(network_game)
I've been looking forward to this for years. It's a levelling based mmorpg with no set classes, your profession is based on the skills you choose. There's also a music composition system. Your character starts off as a 17 year old and each week, your character ages one year. You get skills or levels each year age I think. Anyway, this looks to be amazing.

Kart Rider is pretty cool. It's like all the tools are quiet and only the decent people talk in games. Very good sportsmanship from the players I've raced against/with so far.

May I just say, Anarchy Online, been playing it for awhile, it has a rather steep learning curve, but once you get past that, excellent mmo, stands up very well for a 6 year old game. Still has a strong online community, too.

Another reminder; Auto Assault is still availible for free 14 day trials. Auto Assault is basically a twisted metal-styled retail mmorpg. You upgrade your vehicle's armor and weaponry. Very fun to play.

Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst (SCHTHACK Private Server)
About this server
Now that official PSO Blue Burst has a community of less than 50 players, SCHTHACK, who made the PSOPC, DC & Gamecube private servers has made his own Blue Burst server. SEGA has not updated PSO since before PSU came out, the servers will most likely close down shortly. So, here's a guide to connect to the only private server. This is completely legal, it is not altering the game client at all, just redirecting where the game connects to externally.

Actually, the server is compatable with Dreamcast, PC v2, Gamecube and Blue Burst, you'll see players from all systems on in the lobbies. You can tell what players use what system, because SCHTHACK has programmed the server to display DC/PC/GCN user's system where the blue burst team guild name would be.

What this private server has that official doesn't
* Rare items are more common, still rare but not as hard to find.
* Random & Order item distribution, similar to Phantasy Star Universe.
* Rare Item notification to all party members.
* Daily maintenance, unlike SEGA, SCHTHACK cares.

Install Guide
1) Download the official PSOBB client @ http://www.psobb.com/
2) Install and patch it up.
3) Register a SCHTHACK account @ http://schtserv.com/bbreg.html
4) Do the below steps to add SCHTHACK's IP to your hosts file;

A) From the start menu, select RUN
B) Enter;
notepad.exe c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts C) In the notepad document, add the following two lines to the bottom;
207.210.93.28 game01.us.segaonline.jp
207.210.93.28 patch01.us.segaonline.jp D) Close and save the file

5) You should be fully set up to run PSOBB on SCHTHACK's server now. If you get any errors or other bugs, refer to PSOBB's faq @ http://www.psobb.com/support/ts/index.php

Q&A
Q) Should I let GameGuard update?
A) Yes, it doesn't effect the game connecting to the private servers.

I'm after a pretty good freeware MMO under 50mb. Any ideas people?

dinopoke
23-08-2007, 09:39 PM
Sorry, MMORPGs in a size under 50mbs are pretty hard to find these days. They are usually around 100mb -500mb.
You're better off trying to get those of a friend or a supplement CD that comes with PC magazines. (I have few of those)

I found this though; Furcadia (http://www.furcadia.com/). It's isometric 2D and reminds me of Ultima but it's FRIGGIN 7.5 mb!! Doesn't look too bad but probably won't give to much enjoyment in the long term. But try it out ('cos I am)!

JubeiSaotome might have some suggestions, he seems to know his stuff :-).

EDIT: I played Furcadia. Not that good. :-(

Soldat - http://www.soldat.pl/main.php - is a good, free, small multiplayer 3rd person shooter. It plays sort of like a mix between Liero (anyone remember that?) and CounterStrike. With jetpacks.

As for good browser games, you can't go past Kingdom of Loathing - http://www.kingdomofloathing.com - (KoL) - it has a ton of gameplay and depth, and is hilarious at times.

If you want an MMORPG without any downloads that you can play just about anywhere, you might wanna consider a MUD - Text FTW. Stop laughing, some MUDs have an amazing amount of detail and depth, and the playerbase tends to be less irritating than most graphical MMORPG players. I play the Discworld MUD - http://discworld.atuin.net - based on the Terry Pratchett series.

It's between Closed and Open betas. I'm waiting for it too, it's worth the wait, I guess.

Maybe try this game during the meantime;

Lineage II on a private server.
FlyFF is decent but the grind starts early on.
Granado Espada is decent if you like controlling more than one player.
Silkroad is like Lineage II but free.

Try around, see what seems cool to you and stick with it.

Also, Kart Rider start's it's open beta in 10 days.

I'm assuming you have to pay a subscription fee for Lineage II even on a private server?

I guess I might try FlyFF, I'm used to grind (anyone played Ahriman's Prophecy? Good game, though). Silkroad's lag might kill my PC, my net's slow enough as it is. :-)

Private server generally means free to play server. They can be dodgy and run poorly, but there's some diamonds in the rough. However, if you want the best experience, you're going to have to shell out cash to play official.

I tend to have a problem with the size of the client downloads. I'm capped at 5GB a month and most of the client downloads exceed 1GB so I usually have to make do with the smaller MMOs. What's the download size of this Kart Rider? It looks quite good.

What is "arguably the best one"?

There is no "Best one", there is a "Most popular" however. WoW is arguably the best all rounder, though.

Why Mabinogi?
- Aging. You can choose to be 10 ~ 17 years old when you make your character, age caps at 25. This effects stats and so on. Also titles "JubeiSaotome the bear slayer at 10".
- It has a music system, which uses a widely used tab format. You can just copy & paste a tab code into the game and instantly be strumming away to Vengabus or something.
- It's a free korean mmo that actually has instances, although not as epic looking as WoW or GW.
- You can get part time jobs to improve your income.

It's out of beta, however you STILL need an american IP to play. The game has dated graphics and character animation. The death penalties are borderline asshole and it's a grind. Don't waste your time. Oh, you'll also get sick of hearing weeaboos play the Final Fantasy Prelude and the Bleach theme 500 times a day.

Best game on this list BY FAR. I have all the expansions, outside the steep learning curve, one of the most deep and enthralling MMO's

Node Link: http://games.on.net/file/22955/Runes_of_Magic_Open_Beta_Client

Basically, this game is a complete WoW clone. It's differences are;
* Anime inspired graphics.
* Free to play/Cash Shop.
* Less requirements to play than WoW.
* Gems = Runes, which most equip has slots for from the start.

Character classes are near identical, for example; I'm playing a priest and so far it has all of the same spells, but themed as water. Bubble is actually a bubble, Water Shield. If you've always wanted to play WoW, but the Price/Stylised Graphics/Etc has put you off, this may be a cheap way to get your fix.

I've been playing Evony-Free Forever (http://www.evony.com/index.do) It's a strategy game based on medieval towns. If you follow the quests it's not too bad to start with and you can learn a fair bit about the game that way, but I think it's fairly new and the tutorial probably isn't as good as it could be.

You get a week under protection so you can't attack or be attacked, but you can get rid of protection by raising your Town Hall to level 5. There are alliances so you can get protection with more powerful towns and the world chat seems to be full of people wanting to get you into their alliance, but it's easy to ignore and in the week I've been playing it I've had a minimal amount of mail messages asking me to join an alliance that you can ignore easy. Seems like good fun so far.

I know I've already posted here ago but I'm looking for recommendations for a good MMO again. Previously I've played Trickster Online until after forty levels I realised it was a grind. I also heard FlyFF was decent but when I played it seemed like a boring grind again and throughout my twenty minutes I only saw ten other players on the server. The rest were bots looking to whore their wares.

So now I'm considering Runes of Magic. It sounds like a WOW clone which is basically what I want considering I can't afford WOW at this point. Not really a fan of the art direction though.

I still remember Jubei's recommendations to me : PSO, RO (Ugh), ROSE (AruaROSE), Lineage 2 with Private Server. Are these still worth playing? Magnobi still sounds cool regardless of the harsh death penalty. RO2, Perfect Word, Rappelz, Last Chaos and Knight Online sound kinda decent.

Basically I want something with a largish population and decent support. I don't mind grind if the combat is fun and challenging. But there should be more than just killing monsters. A load of features and depth would be nice to keep me interested and party support should be decent so I can play with my friends.
