View Full Version : Recommended Handheld Games Guide: The List and Rate Thread

DS and PSP games as recommended by the good folk of Hyper.

I’m going to attempt to make this thread a one glance reference point for people. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep it updated regularly enough!

I’ll alphabetically list all games posted by members, and provide an average score. I won’t post comments – if you want those, read the thread. And if you want your opinion included, post a quick list and don't forget to include a score.

This list is just a quick reference point – those after more detail should read the review thread, or seek out an individual thread on said game (if one exists). If anyone has any suggestions on how I can improve this (particularly in terms of formatting), or if you think it’s balls, PM me. Actually, if you think it’s balls don’t bother.

Scores are out of 5. The number in brackets indicates the number of review scores placed for a particular title. Any title with an average score over 4 after more than 5 reviews will be highlighted for easy spotting. Any titles without a number in brackets has only had one score submitted. If you want your scores added to the list then make a post in this thread and I’ll update it when I can.

Cheers,
Jay

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Artemis's first post (and cheers to him for kicking off the thread!):

Zoo Keeper - **** I still play this from time to time, I love Bejeweled, and this has a good selection of modes, and great multiplayer.

Polarium - *** Don't play it so much any more, but nonetheless I was completly addicted to it for a long time. One of the DS' best puzzlers.

Deep Labyrinth - **** I do hope that this is not the only First Person RPG the DS receives. It's only a dungeon hack, but great, great fun, and with any lunk will see the release of other FPRPGs in the style of Elder Scrolls/ Arx Fatalis/ Kings Field on the console

Zoo Tycoon - ** A very limited game, but reasonably fun enough. When I do play it I tend to lose a few hours building up a park.

Clubhouse Games - ***** Perfect Travel game. Plenty of games, great multiplayer and reasonable enough AI.

Children of Mana - **** Hack and Slash, but well done hack and slash. Wonderful graphics and music and reasonable enough length that I've played it through a few times.

Metroid Prime Hunters - *** 1 star for the single player game, which is horrible, 3 stars for the multiplayer deathmatch, which is good.

Mage Knight: Destiny's Soldier - *** I like miniatures games, like D & D Miniatures, or Warhammer, or Confrontation. This is as good as that king of game gets on the DS thus far, and while not great, it's playable.

Mario Kart DS - *** It's fun, but not something I play for great deals of time at a time.

Eragon - *** Very good looking DS game, and though there's nothing original to it, it does play well.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin - *** I've never really gotten into the Castlevania games, and though I like this one, as usual I'm a little disappointed by how much of a wasted opportunity it is.

Ys Strategy - ** Not a great RTS game, but it's a working one, and thus it's good if I'm in the need for a RTS fix on the go

Theme Park - **** This game is great. It has personality, it has charm, it's not the easiest game, but it's not outrageously difficult. Couple of minor bugs, but nothing to detract from the overall game.

Final Fantasy III - ***** The best DS game in my opinion. Great update to a great classic RPG, love the graphical style, love the music, love the game itself.

Battles of Prince of Persia - ***** Excellent, layered, deep strategy game on the DS. Gets better with multiplayer, but is perfectly enjoyable as a single player game.

Platinum Sudoku - *** I'm quite a fan os Sudoku, and this is quite a good Sudoku package. Plenty of puzzles, the handwriting recognitition isn't perfect, but passable, and the presentation is generaly good.

Labyrinth - ** Haven't really played this much yet, so I haven't really gotten into it, but it seems like an ok, but hardly brilliant game.

Bomberman Land Touch - **** - 1 star for the lame single player game, 4 stars for the billiance that is multiplayer.

Bionicle Heroes - **** - I like this game, it's kind of like Serious Sam DS. All action FPS.

Monkey Ball Touch and Roll - *** There are better Monkey Ball games out there, but this is passable.

p.s. 5 doesn't mean it's a perfect game, just one that I really, really enjoyed, 4 is a game I don't regret buying as it was good fun, 3 is one of those, myeh ok, but not great, 2 is one which I wish I hadn't bought, 1 is just rubbish.

Well, i find the game very Generic and boring. The graphics and sounds are terrible and it is just using a run of the mill formula. Not original. Not fun.

Everybody's Golf - 5/5 (Have played this game the most since I got my PSP and have enjoyed every minute of it. Unlocking the items has given me a good reason to go and play it over and over again. Could use a few more courses and maybe some ultra cool mini golf courses as well instead of playing on the "real course" greens!)

GTA Vice City Stories - 5/5 (My favourite GTA on a portable. What more to say!)

Ridge Racer - 4/5 (Good fun to play)

Advance Wars DS - ***** My favourite DS game
Yu-Gi-Oh 2007 Championship edition - ***** When I got this I didn't stop playing it for days, I had to put it down so I wouldn't fail uni, but the second the semester is over I'm gonna be a junky for this game again. The whole collecting cards and trying to build the supreme deck to pwn losers online, its addictive
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - ***** My favourite 2D platformer of all time, even higher up than Super Mario Bros 3
Electroplankton - **** A one of a kind game that just couldn't work on any other system GET HIGH AND PLAY THIS

animal crossing-I may not be able to explain the gameplay, let alone the appeal, all I know is I played this for many many hours
mario kart-so much multiplayer goodness, both with friends and wfc.

Sure there's others, but those two are the standouts.

I'm yet to play Castlevania...will check out one soon.

Wario Ware Touched! ****- The Wario Ware games have been pumped out to the point of borderline overkill by now, but I still love them. The blowing games suck a bit, but for the most part this is excellent.
Elite Beat Agents ***** Hands down, my favourite DS game that I've played. Really need to import Ouedan 2....when I have the money.
Mario Kart DS **** Easily the best Mario Kart game of them all, but also the one that starts to make me wonder if the series really has anywhere too exciting to go. Blue shells are ridiculously overpowered too.
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 **** I barely count this as a game. I see it more as a really good book, with interactive bits that are occasionally pretty dodgy.
Meteos ***** The only downside of this fantastic game is that it makes me jealous of everyone who has the means to play Lumines.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney and Justice For All- both **** Very compelling and fun series. Very heavy on text, but also very satisfying.
Animal Crossing: Wild World ***** I've been meaning to get it back out ever since I got Wi-Fi. SOON. Very awesome, though, and perfectly suited to a handheld.
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble! **** I've never played the console versions, but I really thought this was a lot of fun.
Project Rub *** For $15 or less, its a no-brainer. For anything more, stick with Warioware.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike! *** Couldn't get into this as much as the GBA game. Or Fire Emblem, for that matter.
Kirby: Canvas Curse *** It's been a while since I played it, but it was *alright*.

Sony PSP
Ridge Racer - 4/5 - The Best RR game I've played to date. Although it annoyed me as I got to one of the final races, and it's IMPOSSIBLE to beat. As such, I haven't touched it in months.

LocoRoco - 3.5/5 - Adorable and unique. It's a shame it's all over too fast. Also proof you don't need a fancy touch-screen to be innovative. :-P

WipEout Pure - 3.5/5 - Technically brilliant, I just find I don't always have an interest in playing it. It just hasn't grabbed me yet like Wipeout 64/2097 did.

Lumines - 4/5 - Repetitive and mind-numbing. The way any good puzzler should be.

Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play - 4/5 - Some of the emulation is questionable at best, but there are enough classic games that made it through playable to make the collection worthwhile (as long as you don't pay too much for it).

Burnout Legends - 4.5/5 - An unbelieable achievement for the PSP. Early proof of what the little handheld can do.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories - 4.5/5 It's a GTA3 remix you take anywhere. This should be a no-brainer.

Star Trek: Tactical Assault - 3.5/5 - Fans of the Starfleet Command series will be right at home with this game. Similar play mechanics, albeit in a much simpler guise. Enjoyable and playable. Some missions are BULLSHIT though.

Power Stone Collection - 3.5/5 - Both Power Stone games in one package. Sounds great until you realise Power Stone 2 isn't as much fun as the original. If you pay less than $30 for it, you'll be happy.

Street Fighter Alpha3 Max - 4/5 - Perfectly suited to the PSP. Looks beautiful on the screen and a perfect port of the Dreamcast version (which is as close as you're going to get to the arcade).

Shutoku Battle: Zone of Control [JAP] - 3/5 - I am partial to this due to the fact I love the Tokyo Highway Challenge/Shutoku Battle series from the Dreamcast/PS2. Other may find it a little slow. Known locally as Street Supremacy.

Gradius Collection - 4/5 - An excellent, arcade perfect compilation of all the Gradius titles (sans Gradius V). Great, until you realise that you probably won't have the time or patience to play a game of Gradius on the move. Couldn't used some form of 'Save State' function.

Colin McRae Rally 2005 plus - 3.5/5 - Technically impressive, and aside from more jaggies, indistinguishable from it's console counterpart. Controls don't translate too well to the PSP's joystick, so you'll end up using the d-pad. Takes a hell of a lot of patience and skill to master. Worth it however, it's it the best handheld rally game I've ever played.

Nintendo DS

Polarium - 3/5 - A nice early example of what the NDS could do for puzzle games. Fun, but short lived.

Wario Ware Touched! - 3/5 - Short, and a curious absence of multiplayer. However, you can overlook these shortcomings and find an innovative and different Wario Ware experience.

Bomberman - 3.5/5 - Single player mode is a pushover, but the 8-player capable multiplayer is unparalleled in it's awesomeness.

Project Rub - 3/5 - If you've played Wario Ware and are after yet more weird mini game action, check out PR. It's quite cheap nowadays.

Zoo Keeper - 4/5 - Born for the DS, this puzzle game is addictive and looks/plays a treat on the DS.

Mr. Driller Drill Spirits - 3.5/5 - Addictive, but can be quite unfair. I gave up trying to finish this nightmare.

Tetris DS - 5/5 - My favourite game on the DS, and quite possibly my favourite handheld game of all time. Two words: WIFI mode.

Meteos - 2.5/5 - Disappointing game from the maker of Lumines. Strategy can be ignored in favour of screen mashing your wat to victory, something the later levels force you to do in spades.

Metroid Prime Pinball - 3.5/5 - Surprisingly good Metroid-themed pinball game. Twin screen layout lends it's self to the game.

The Rub Rabbits - 3/5 - Yet more of the same Project Rub action that you may or may not be sick of already. Get one or the other, not both.

Kirby Canvas Curse - 4/5 - One of the best platformers I've had the pleasure of playing in a LONG time.

Clubhouse Games - 4/5 - I played the mission modes to completion. Addictive, relaxing and varied. Online play adds even more value. Worth it just for Chess and 5 Card Draw.

Yoshi's Island DS - 4/5 - Exactly what a Yoshi's Island sequel should be. Naysayers are idiots.

New Super Mario Bros. - 5/5 - Awesome. Get it. NOW!

Don't have time to write any reviews, so this thread will do nicely.

As usual, 5/5 doesn't necessarily mean the game is perfect.

DS:

Super Mario 64 DS- 5/5. In a word- magic. Didn't get to play the original thoroughly enough, so I was just as surprised and delighted playing this one and discovering the secrets as people were who played the original. The extra stuff is awesome too- being able to play as Wario ftw.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike- 4.5/5. Hugely entertaining strategy game. Got back into it recently and it still enthralls. The sheer amount of time I've put into the game is justification enough for the score.

Mario Kart DS- 3.5/5. 1P mode is a bit short, but the control/car physics are the best ever and the new tracks are excellent in design and visuals.

Metroid Prime: Hunters- 3/5. Fun in 1P mode, multiplayer is fun with bots. Never got into the online mode fully.

Tetris DS- 5/5. You can't ruin Tetris, and modes such as Mission and Push suggest that it can even be improved.

Yoshi's Island DS- 4/5. Takes a while, but once it gets going, a hugely fun successor to the SNES classic. Arguably more challenging, especially if you try to 100% it.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow- 5/5. Best DS game ever.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin- 4.5/5. Not as brilliant as DoS, but still extremely entertaining.

PSP:

Loco Roco- 5/5. This game never fails to put a smile on my face. Infinitely charming and excellent game mechanics. The game is a bit easy on the first run through, but the real fun and challenge lies in getting 100%. And hearing the blue Loco Roco say 'Mui Mui!' is incentive enough to search for them. ;)

NHL 07- 2/5. Great hockey game ruined by being way too easy and retarded opoosition goalkeeping. No matter what I did with the sliders, I couldn't stop scoring tons of goals. The reserve system works well, especially when the reserves coach emails with "I think this player would be worth considering for the next game".

Killzone: Liberation- 4/5. No replay value, but the 1P mode is absolutely killer while it lasts. A shooter where tactics and smart thinking are required to win.

NFL Street 3- 3.5/5. Good if you have no other Street games or want the updated roster. Gameplay is as good as ever (Respect the Street gets too easy after a while though) and if you want a QB who has enough speed to do something on defence, this game has more than ever. The new Gamebreaker system is very good. One problem is this game seems to have toned down the outrageous style of previous games- create a player mode has very limited options in terms of clothing, hairstyles etc. and no voices (this might be PSP only) means no trash talking. The soundtrack also doesn't suit the game as well as previous ones did.

Chili Con Carnage- 4/5. How do you describe this game? It's a shooter with Endless Mode, it's a comedy, it's gun porn, it's way over-the-top, and it's just plain fun. More replayability than the average shooter, thanks to high score modes, a Medal system in the 1P stages (like Rogue Squadron had), and unlockable content. Overpowered guns, excellent Loco moves, and hilarious action hero-style one-liners ('you spill my tequila, you pay the price!') round out the package.

Warioware Touched! 3/5
Didn't exactly blow me away or anything. Fun while it lasted. I'd give it a rent or two.
Advance Wars: Dual Strike 4/5
Fun, doesn't really offer anything new, but has the good formula behind it still. Would of definitely gained an extra mark if it had online capabilities.
Children of Mana 3/5
Eh, expected much more. Not bad, I spose.
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 5/5
Favourite game on the DS so far, definitely. I've borrowed alot of games from friends, too, and it still stands as my number one choice. Its why the DS was thought of imo, import it.

DJ Max Portable 2 (Korea) 5/5

I've had this odd hankering to try one of these out, but i'm unsure of what language barrier i'll face.

Shutoku Battle: Zone of Control [JAP]

I've also wanted to see how this is, being a fan of Tokyo Xtreme Racer 0, but am unsure how the controls translate to the PSP.

PSP

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max (4/5): Great port, that seems a lot tougher than the PSone version. Word of warning though, you'll need to mod the d-pad to get any enjoyment out of the game. Pre-mod I couldn't hit a diagonal for shit, no matter how hard i pressed. Took the PSP apart and put minute amounts of blu-tac under the 4 points of the d-pad to close the distance. Worked like a charm.

Fight Night Round 3 (5/5): Another great port, that imo is on par with the PS2 version. Not graphically, but it definitely has a better career mode, better between round cut healing, and more brutal looking wounds. The opinion on controls will differ from person to person. Me I don't see the twin stick control on the console versions really requiring more skill, it does however provide slightly better control. That said I wasn't fazed either way.

Ridge Racer (3/5): Play copious amounts of RRT4 back in the day, so I'm pretty tired of the formula. Solid game, but if you played one to death, its a little dull.

Wipeout Pure (4.5/5): Almost perfect. I've been aching for a Wipeout game like the days of old, Wipeout 2097/Wipeout 3: Special Edition are probably the only PSone games I have that still get a regular spin. Sadly, I knocked off half a point for a combination of weak soundtrack and for still focusing a little too much on weaponry.

Initial D (5/5): I've put an awful amount of playing time into this. Based on Version 3 of the arcade counterpart, I prefer it over the PS2 port, which was based on V2. Great graphics marred by the slightest of slowdown on some rare occasions. I'd suggest seeking out the Asian version which comes with an english language manual. Very handy indeed.

Burnout Legends (4/5): Probably the best looking game on PSP i've seen thus far. Not only for beauty but also for sheer speed. Definitely a worthy purchase.

Lumines (4/5): Great puzzler, I prefer it over Meteos because its just constant. That being said I can't get very far so I see the same 3 stages over and over and over >_<

Formula One 06 (3.5/5): Its not to say its not a great game, but I believe visually it was rushed, MotoGP for one looks far better than this. SOlid title, if a little on the dry side, its arcadey which is forgivable due to the format, but this doesn't mean you should forget the AI as well.

Virtua Tennis: World Tour (3.5/5): Great for a quick play, but it tires very very quickly. I also found it a bit on the tough side. Solid visuals and sound effects though.

DS

Phoenix Wright AA/JFA (5/5): Thoroughly enjoyed both games, can hit the odd lul sometimes but when it picks up, it reminds you how much fun these games are. Bitterly disappointed the new DS native PW4 doesn't include an english language option :(

Metroid Prime: Hunters (1/5): And that 1 is merely for what they managed to pull off graphically on the system. The gameplay is terribly pissweak and shallow, run-and-gun to the end, defeat boss, run-and-gun back.

Meteos (3/5): Loses a point on Lumines purely due to the fact I prefer the sleeker design of Lumines to the OMG BRIGHT COLOURS AND CUTE SPRITE THINGS of Meteos. Addicitve game though.

Tony Hawks American Sk8land (3.5/5): Points off due to the tired format of the Tony Hawk games. Did like that they chose to cel shade it though, giving it a Jet Set feel, and obviousbly easing the systems hardware. Points for including a soundtrack, didn't think they'd do it.

Bleach DS (3.5/5): Wasn''t really what I thought it would be. Bought it under the presumption it was a 2D fighter, and it turned out to be more of a Smash Bros type melee. Bland backgrounds don't help either. For what it is though, its solid.

Hotel Dusk (5/5): Great ******ing game. Helps that I'm a fan of noir style games (Max Payne, Blade Runner), cool interface and nice styling. Some mundane puzzles though, but this didn't prevent me from thoroughly enjoying this game.

Ridge Racers (.5/5): Terrible, just terrible.

Asphaly Urban GT (0/5): Worse than Ridge Racers. Later I learn Gamerloft makes mobile phone games. Figures.

Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy (2/5), some terrible bugs, average graphics, and plain gameplay. Still, I derived a little enjoyment out of it. The flying levels were attrocious though.

Trauma Center (5/5): Starts out easy enough, but ramps up the difficulty very quickly. Still, this game is a perfect example of the DS's strengths as a gaming system. Keen gamers will aquire a second stylus to make this game a whole lot easier.

I have few others that I've yet to really get stuck into suchs as Metal Gear Ac!d 1 & 2, and Another Code.

EDIT:

Ouedan (4/5): Forgot this one. Its a very good game, but I don't think I dug it as much as others have, not really clued in with everything Japanese. Soundtrack is ok, but sometimes the game feels broken - the timing on some of the shrinking circles is off. Still I'd prefer this than EBA after seeing what music was on offer there.

NDS

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - 4/5
I love this game, but something about it just won't let me give it full marks. The story was excellent, the gameplay was fab, I wasn't a huge fan of the seal system, maybe if the touch screen was implimented a little better I'd like it a smidgen more.

Mr Driller: Drill Spirits - 5/5
The voice acting is terrible, but hilarious, and I honestly can't think of anything else wrong with the game. The unlockable characters all have very handy abilities, the time trial mode is great (and maddening), I loved the racing mode (can't remember what it's called <.<), and the store goodies are excellent. Yay for Mr. Driller!

Nintendogs: Daschund & Friends - 4/5
People who rate Nintendogs down because they don't play it anymore confuse me. I played it intensely when I first got it, as I'm sure everyone else did, but once I started to get a little bored I slowed right down and only played for an hour or so every couple of days. I still play it a few times a week and I still love it. It does what it is meant to do very well and shouldn't be penalised just because it's not as "fresh" as it used to be. Giving it 1/5? or 2/5? WTF?

Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! - 5/5
So far the best game on the system. Addictive as all hell. I realised even though the last level on the last difficulty was serving my butt to me on a platter that I still went back over and over because, damn it, it was FUN! Very rarely does a game do that for me. OSU!

Sonic Rush - 5/5
Pretty much perfect. Exactly what I wanted after the 3D Sonics that failed to move me. Blaze is one of the few new characters that is interesting, the Chaos Emerald levels are great, the bosses are even better, and the music? Well, I went ahead and purchased the soundtrack from Japan. :P

PSP

Legend of Heroes: Tears of Vermillion - 2/5
This game feels half finished. Very cliche and boring character designs, slightly interesting story, frustrating controls (and it's an J-RPG!)... I haven't felt compelled to go back and play it. Disappointing.

Lumines - 5/5
GREAT game. I'm only starting to get the hang of it (I don't play the PSP very much at the moment), but it's the game that made me want to get the system in the first place. Pretty, pretty, pretty, in terms of style and function. Lovely.

Me and My Katamari - 3/5
Fun, but could have been SO much more that it hurts a little. The levels get very samey, the music is pretty much the same as We <3 Katamari's, finding the cousins and presents is still fun, the concept is a great one, but it really should have had more put into it.

PoPoLoCrois - 4/5
I'm only a few hours into this, but I'm utterly charmed by it. Much much better than the pile of dross that is Legend of Heroes. The characters are sweet, there's something fragile and charming about the world and art, and the story, while a little cliche, looks like it could develop into something a lot more interesting as time goes on.

Tokobot - 3.5/5
This is a pretty fun game. The tokobots are very cute, but it's missing something that makes it a great game. The puzzles are way too easy at the moment, and I hope they get a lot harder as I progress through. Has potential to be very good, though!

Well for my Nintendogs score I got bored of it within 2 days. It wasn't just a case of playing it less. That's why I scored AC:WW quite highly as I played it everyday for a good 3 months. Obviously as time wore on I played it less than before, but I was still playing it.
Also Nintendogs is pretty much a mini-game in Harvest Moon DS!

DS

Animal Crossing - Wild World 4/5
Animal Crossing is better as a handheld game. It's just more convenient for short burst of play. It doesn't really demand anything of you either so it's a great game to play when your kicking your feet up at the end of the day.

Castlevania DOS 4.5/5

An outstanding action game reminiscent of metroid, with it's focus on exploration and aquiring new abilities. Huge variety of soul abilites means their is never a dull moment.

Children of Mana 3/5

A somewhat shallow experience. The graphics and art style are great, but the gameplay is quite repetitive. It's redeemed but a decent story, and customisation adds enough variety to keep it interesting. You can't help but feel it could have been better though.

Elite Beat Agents 5/5

Addictive, charming, and keeps you coming back. Just plain fun.

Final Fantasy III 4/5

A great update of an old classic. The job system is excellent. Overall It feels a little dated, but thats to be expected. The story isn't fantastic, and the save system annoying, but with a little patients you'll find a rewarding experience.

Hotel Dusk 4.5/5

This game has style, a great cast of characters, and an excellent story. You couldn't ask for much more in an adventure game. Exceptc maybe slightly more complex puzzles.

Mario Kart DS 5/5

A best of for the mario kart series. It includes content from previous mario karts, including my favourite the snes version. Throw in great multiplayer over wifi and you have a damn fine game.

Meteos 4/5

a unique and addictive puzzler that makes great use of the touch screen. A bit lacking in terms of modes, but it doesn't really get old so it's not a big problem.

Metroid Prime Hunters 3/5

Looks good, and has great controls, but the single player is really quite dull. Decent multiplayer does redeem it, bit id prefer a solid single player experience, which is what metroid is about.

Battles of Prince of Persia 3.5/5

What it lacks in presentation it makes up for in gameplay. Definitely worth checking out for strategy fans.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 5/5

There aren't any games on the DS I've enjoyed more that this. This game has so much character it's impossible not to love it.

Phoenix Wright: Justice for All 4.5/5

A worthy sequel, that ties in well to the first. It's one case shorter though.

Starfox Command 4/5

A return to form for the starfox series, it brought back fond memories of lylat wars. It adds in some DS functionality to the formula which works well too. It's short but there's multiple pathways and endings to give it replay value.

Super Mario DS 5/5

I never experienced the original, but a few years on its brilliant design is still evident.

New Super Mario 4/5

A great 2D platformer, but lacking the charm and class of the older 2D titles.

Yoshis Touch and Go 3/5

It's been described as little more than a tech demo, and its true that their isn't alot to the game. Whats there is good though. It really does demonstrate what the touch screen can bring to gameplay, and it does keep you coming back to get a better score. You could certainly do worse.

BTW, does anyone have any objection to me merging the scores for Elite Beat Agents and Ouenden? I haven't played either, but if people think think they warrant separate inclusions I'll leave as is.

I'll also get around to posting my own votes soon. And updating with yours Ayatollah... :)

OBJECTION!

Dude, we wrote them in differently because they a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAMES. Why would people have both on their lists? ;)

Ouendan > Elite Beat Agents.

Dude.

Dude!

Look them up!

This is blasphemy!

Madness, Sparta, you're wrong, no u, etc.
Ouendan and EBA aren't completely different games, they use exactly the same mechanics and the only real difference is the music.

Personally I prefer EBA. Haven't gotten around to playing Ouendan 2 yet.

Advance Wars DS: 4/5
I never personally played this, but I had to pry the DS out of my friend's hands when it was time to leave the store.

Brain Age/Training: 5
Play it every day.

Elite Beat Agents: 5
Best game on DS, in my opinion.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215: 4.5
I treated it more as an interactive novel than as an adventure game, and it was more fun.

Jump Ultimate Stars: 3.5/5
The closest you're going to get to SSB on DS. I'd score it higher if I could read Japanese.

Mario Hoops: 4.5
Incredibly addictive, hard to master but a lot of fun. Good multiplayer too.

Meteos: 4
Just make sure you get the original, not the dumbed down Disney Magic version.

Metroid Prime: Hunters: 4
Why does everyone hate on this game so much?

New Super Mario Bros: 2
I hate the way Mario controls, it just doesn't feel right.

Nintendogs: 2.5
Some people love it, it's just not for me.

Osu! Tatake! Ouenden: 4
EBA but with Japanese music.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney/Justice For All: 3.5/5
Same game, same score.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl: 2/5
They bring nothing new to the table.

Sonic Rush: 3.5
Best Sonic game in a while.

Tetris DS: 5
It's Tetris, but with more Awesome.

Trauma Centre: Under The Knife: 4
Great game

Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble: 3
Good, not great

Wario Ware Touched! 4.5
I'm a huge WarioWare fan, and this game is a more than worthy addition to the series.

I'll leave them as is. I had been told that EBA was just the rebadged local release - with appropriate translation (ie: music being changed a bit) - of Ouenden, but having not played either I couldn't tell. Cheers for the heads up guys!

I'm only going to do the games I have spent enough time with to warrant proper consideration.

DS

Another Code: Two Memories 4 out of 5
Hearkening back to the golden days of the click and point adventure, but with updated DS snazziness, this occasionally ill-paced (see the last two chapters - you might as well, because see is pratically all you are allowed to do) mystery had great graphics, some cool puzzles (with a couple of naff ones thrown in) and an average story. Short, and not to everyone's taste, but then so is Heart of Darkness, and that's still a classic.

Mario Kart DS 4.5 out of 5
Something of a Mario Kart 'Greatest Hits', the DS version offers up 32 tracks (a high for the series), great handheld graphics, and - the ace in the hole - WiFi play! If you can get over being routinely owned by Dam Nam Phuc the autistic 11yo Korean prodigy ('Damn you Dam Nam Phuc!') then there is some great fun to be had here. The racing is balanced (blue shells aside) and in local WiFi the game totally rocks.

Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time 3.5 out of 5
Following in the footsteps of big Daddy console Mario RPG Thousand Year Door was always going to dwarf this handheld attempt, but there's a competent adventure in here if you persevere. Lacks much of the self-referential humour that the series is known for (or maybe it's just not as effective fourth time around), but the introduction of the time-travelling babies offer some new twist on some aging mechanics.

New Super Mario Bros. 4 out of 5
Initial impressions, coupled with the healthy whiff of nostalgia this provides, have one reaching for a 5 out of 5, but extended play causes the game to show both its heritage (great) and its cracks (not so great). It's a bit like going on a date with a really hot 35yo - by the end of the night the make-up is starting wear off and so is the novelty. But the sex will probably be pretty good, so stick it out. I have no idea what that means. 4 out of 5.

Zoo Keeper 4 out of 5
It's almost as if the stylus was custom built for this very title, so intuitive is it (particularly for anyone who has played much Bejewelled). A bit light on for options, and with a High Score table that regularly resets itself for no reason (I swear I scored 1.5 million - I swear!), the game still has enough going for it to sit in your DS for quite a while.

PSP

Everybody's Golf 5 out of 5
I bought this on a bit of a whim, having played the PSX original many years ago, and flush with 'I've got a new console what can I buy for it?' fever in the days following launch. Along with Lumines it hijacked the console for the best part of 9 months, and probably caused me to miss many great titles. Oh wait, no it didn't. There weren't any. Forgot. Anyway, it's now out in the Classics range (or whatever they call it), and even if golf is your idea of chinese water torture it's worth dripping on your head for a bit.

Loco Roco 4 out of 5
One of the most racist games ever made. More racist than the German steroetypes in WW2 shooters. More racist than every asian stereotype ever inflicted upon us in any game. More racist than the GTA series (that was pretty racist, actually). I'm surprised it ever saw the light of day. Seriously, one of the most endearing games on the system - the first time the Loco's sing to you is amazing - and if it were longer and a bit more varied - and less RACIST! - it would almost be worth a 5. Great art direction too.

Lumines 5 out of 5
The irony that is inherent in the fact that Sony's shiny new uber handheld's best launch game (and still, imo, best game) was essentially an update of Tetris was both delicious and slightly sad, but it didn't matter because Lumines was, and is, quite simply luminous. Absolutely addictive, funky, strange, and best played with headphones, it was one of the games of the year in 2005, and the PSP version still stands as the best.

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 4.5 out of 5
It's not often I feel the need to have men in my pocket but the shortcomings (ooh I say Vicar!) of Pro Evo 5 gave me that hankering. Thankfully number 6 fixed many of those problems, such as adding the Master League, and this is the definitive football game on the console. Actually, being more fully-featured than its 360 bretheren has meant that I've logged more time here. Once you get used to the sometimes slidey players this is a great time-waster.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror 4.5 out of 5
I honestly didn't think this sort of game would really work on the PSP, and as such held off buying it until this summer, when I spotted it in the Nunawading JB for $40 or so. The next week's worth of hot nights was spent sitting on the patio playing through this gripping and impressive third-person shooter. I'm very happy to hear tell of a sequel.

Wipeout Pure 3.5 out of 5

Visually stunning, and a great way to show off the new handheld to your friends at launch time, Wipeout Pure was a return to form for the series. Equal parts fun and frustration, long load times hampered an otherwise slick experience. Also now part of the 'Classics' range, and definitely worth a pick up at that price. Has quite a bit of DLC as well. Not that I can work out how to access it. Retard. :(

More to come, including Burnout Legends, Final Fantasy III and Hotel Dusk.

Like Jay, I'm only going to list the games I have spent a lot of time with.

PSP

Burnout Legends - 4 out of 5
It's Burnout, it's portable and it only cost $30. Brilliant, really.

Loco Roco - 4.5 out of 5
I really like this game. The art direction and gameplay are so unique and as a plus, pure awesome. My only gripe against it is that it starts to feel a little samey after a while. Also, just finishing levels (without collecting everything) is too easy.

WipeOut Pure - 4.5 out of 5
The first WipeOut game I've bought since Wip3Out (I believe it's pronounced "whip three out", whatever that means!) and really reminds me what is so good about the franchise. Simple, beautiful, challenging. There's some really cool downloadable tracks too (the Omega pack is my fave, mainly for the art design).

Sid Meier's Pirates! - 4 out of 5
I was addicted to the original PC game when I was a kid (like, 15+ years ago) and never had a chance to play the PC remake. Thankfully, everything that was great about the original made it across. It's really a collection of mini-games, yes, but unlike most it actually makes for a cohesive whole and IMO is the best piratey game around.

Infected - 2 out of 5
This game has zombies, but other than that it's not that great. The controls don't feel very good to me and the missions are all kinda similar. The first few hours were fun, but I got sick of it pretty quickly.

Exit 2 - 4 out of 5
Not really a sequel so much as a big expansion pack. The stars of the show are the art design and the puzzle design, the latter of which has me completely hooked. There's a few small flaws which were in the original game, such as the animations needing to finish before you can do something else, but the puzzles are so good I really don't care.

Daxter - 3 out of 5
I recognise this is not a bad game and is visually quite stunning at times, but playing it feels like more of a chore than actual fun. I should point out I'm not really a fan of the PS2 games and only bought it 'cos it got such good reviews and was cheap as. It's fine, but doesn't really do much for me.

PSP games I own but not listed? GTA:VCS and Crush, which should be in the post today... *fingers crossed*

DS

Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney - 3.5 out of 5
I love the humour in this game and all the courtroom hi-jinx! The only let down for me is that the collecting evidence bit is so trial and error (go to each location and try everything to see what will move the story along. Rinse and repeat until finally getting back to court).

Trauma Centre - 3 out of 5
Great concept, decent execution, just the difficulty curve that needed more work. Never finished it because it's so darn frustrating!

New Super Mario Bros. - 4.5 out of 5
Finally a "proper" sequel to the SMB games. Love it.

Mario Kart DS - 5 out of 5
The best Mario Kart yet and fantastic multi-player fun. It also helps that me and my wife (ok, so we're technically de-facto, but after 11+ years it seems stupid to call her my 'girlfriend' and using the term 'partner' has caused much confusion about my orientation! lol) are evenly matched. We've spent many many hours with this game and I still love it to pieces.

Brain Training - 2.5 out of 5
Was good for a couple of weeks, but I haven't touched it in a while. I just know Dr. Kawashima will criticise my laziness, but screw him! :P

There's more, but not today... :)

Field Commander PSP 1/5
Looks like a PS1 game, it's too short, too easy and ocassioanlly too damn dark to see. It may be better in multiplayer but I haven't come across another person with a copy of it.

Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony PSP 3/5
The loading times ruin what would otherwise be an ok Diablo style RPG. Needs a fairly large investment of time to finish (which I haven't done yet) and the branching professions of the three main classes offer some variety. The wizard class has far too easy of a time once it aquires death magic with its percentage chance to raise a minion every time you kill an enemy with death magic.

Everybody’s Golf PSP 5/5
My favourite PSP game so far.

Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition PSP 4/5
I'm not normally into driving games but have had a lot of fun with this one after getting it for free with GTA:VCS. 3 different cities to race in a small variety of race types and a good number of courses through the city and heaps of different cars with plenty of customisation options, this is pretty much what I go back to as soon as I get sick of what I am currently playing. Suffers a bit from being a little too dark, can be very tough to play on public transport.

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords DS 4/5
So it's basically Bejewelled in an RPG format, where Bejewelled wouldn't normally hold my attention for all that long the RPG elements of this game do. I have had some issues with touch accuracy and the fact that Dugogg the two headed Ogre is a ****ing cheating bastard that can do over 100 hp in damage before you even have a single turn. There are only two character save slots which really restricts you when it comes to experimenting with different character classes and skills, if I had been able to have four or more characters going at once I would have given this game a 5.

Pokemon Diamond 4/5
While not much has changed, there's a reason why, it's a damn good formula. If you know anyone nearby who owns it you MUST swap records, then tune into every TV you find. It makes the game worth owning with it's hilarity!

+ Innovative puzzler -- 2D to 3D perspective works a treat
+ Plenty of levels many of which challenging yet rewarding
+ Great comic book-style graphics
+ Solid controls
+ Interesting and mature storyline

- Gets real hard, real quick
- Music is a bit meh

let's see ... ok I'm only going to put in games that I've played recently (got a stack that I haven't even started or touched yet - busy busy times)

X-men II: ROA (PSP - I'm a sucker for marvel comics so yeah having this handheld was a god sent) 4/5
Ultimate Alliance (PSP - same as above except I can play all the other heroes/villians that didn't make it into the game above) 4.5/5
Tekken DR (Hmmm ... great game and nearly arcade port perfect, excellent tweakes to fighting system but hey it got boring alil too quick. Still best fighter on handheld - if your fighting fanantic then add another 1 point) 3/5
Ridge racer 2 (Drifting awesomeness) 5/5
Loco Roco (Just cool) 4/5
Killzone liberation (Better then PS2 version, more a tactical shooter but too short and still no sign of promised downloadable content) 3/5
GTA:LCS and GTA:VCS (GTA on a handheld-wat more do you want) 5/5
Armored Core: Formula Front (Like Championship manager but with mecha robots - if you like to tweake then great but if you want a actual game give it a miss) 3/5
Wipeout pure (probabaly the best of all the wipeouts - coming from someone who owns every wipeout) 5/5

Mario 64 DS (mario 64 reharsh - if you played the N64 version you played it but still great) 4/5
Quedan (Better than Elite beat agents and more fun than the sequel) 4/5
Metroid prime Hunters (Like quake 3 in a hand held - sweet mitiplayer goodness. Singleplayer not bad either and controls were awesome) 5/5
Viewful Joe (Viewful Joe lite - added touch screen was rather dodgely added but still fun) 4/5
Twin memories (God I miss these games - great puzzles but aliittle short and no replay value - enjoy while it last) 4/5
Castlevania Aria of sorrow (The better of the two between protrait of ruin) 4/5
Advance wars Duel Strike (more addictive than crack) 5/5

... ok back to work

Picked Chili Con Carnage up on the weekend, this is incredibly silly fun. It's taken the original PS2 / XBOX game and packaged it well for the PSP. Controls are relatively solid, and all the combos are there, albeit a little easier to pull off. The kick ass soundtrack rounds this one up as a title well worth picking up.

If you check out your local EB, which might still be finishing up their sales period, you can find this one for half price... $30.00 or something... I can't remember how much I paid for it now...

LUNAR KNIGHTS (DS)
My god. I think this is one of THE BEST GAMES I HAVE EVER PLAYED!!! Great production values, and nice story to boot. Short if you only play it once through (10-15hours), so do everything to get your money's worth (there's a hard mode, side quests and a bonus dungeon). 4.5/5 (loses a 1/2 because normal mode should have been a bit harder)

DS:

Mario Kart DS:
Mario Kart DS is the most complete and addictive handheld game I have ever played. It's a great game in every way and can't be missed. 5/5
Pokemon Diamond:
Pokemon Diamond is great. I mean it's Pokemon what can you expect. This one seemed to be a bit longer and bigger than others which is great. The immense amount of Pokemon to be caught is just mouth-watering! From 4/5 to 5/5 definately. Say 4.5 for now.
Nintendogs:
Nintendogs is good but I just don't have the time for a virtual pet. Im not a big fan of all the sims around these days but I do respect Nintendogs and this game can be quite enjoyable when played muchly. Undecided, stay at 3.5/5 for now.
Dragonball Z Supersonic Warriors 2:
I wasn't expecting much of this game when I bought it, I bought it because it's Dragonball. This game was surprisingly fun. It didn't last for long but it was quite a fun little fighter when I got into it. 4/5
Project Rub:
I got this real cheap and was an impulse buy. It turned out to be really fun and inventive, showing what the DS was made for. There were tons of memorable mini-games and some were mighty tough. Good game. 3.5/5
Super Mario 64 DS:
Having got the original N64 version, I knew what I was in for. And what I was in for was good. This did prove to be quite true to the N64 original and added a few new touches and great mini-games which were great time wasters. Great game, everyone with a DS needs it. 4.5/5

Thread needs serious bumpage and updating!

Some mod needs to go back through the start and re-add it all up and update it!

Anyways, there's a few PSP games I want to add, remember, 5/5 for me doesn't mean it's a flawless game, just something awesome which I'd recommend to everyone.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness 5/5
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 5/5
Parodius Portable 5/5

Next update, after more play time I'll add

Brave Story
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles (have played a little and this looks like a 5/5 as well!)
MGS:PO and PO+
Silent Hill Origins.

Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 5/5
Cool art style and music. Very addictive.

Mario Kart DS 5/5

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core - 5/5
Brings some welcome changes to the FF battle system and fills in plot holes of FFVII. Amazing graphics for a handheld and the voice acting is great too.

DS
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates - 4/5
While suffering from a few issues of design (Slowdown in 4p games and some intuitiveness flaws), this game is still very playable. It has a lighthearted story mode, which goes for approx. 9 hours, 3x that if you do the two New Game Plus modes. It plays more like an action RPG come 3D Platformer too. If you want a good multiplayer action RPG for DS, get this and don't bother with anything else (For now).

Ultimate Mortal Kombat - 4/5
Yeah yeah, it's Mortal Kombat, but at least it's a port of one of the better games (MK2 being the pinacle). This port is well done, it allows you to enter the KOMBAT KODES post-game over to unlock characters and features local wireless battles. Also, included is Puzzle Kombat, midway's rip of Puzzle Fighter.

Puzzle League - 4.5/5
I'm not a puzzle gamer and I have not played this game indepth, so base this rating on me playing endless mode a whole load. This is a great change from the overdone-ness that is Tetris. Yeah, I know it's been out since SNES days, but it works well with the stylus. Great soundtrack too.

DS:

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - 5/5
Perfect pacing, game play and controls.

Pokemon Diamond - 3.5/5
What can I say, it's like the 50th hand held Pokemon RPG :)

Castlevania Portrait of Ruin - 3.5/5
Overall good, but the backtracking can be annoying at times plus the last boss is a total bitch

PSP:

Wipeout Pure - 4.5/5
Probs the best racing experience you can get on a handheld.

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth - 3.5/5
I'd recommend this to anyone after a different style of the traditional JRPG.

DS: Jump! Ultimate Stars! 5/5

I think this is the best game on the DS. It's kind of like SSB in the sense that all the stages are different and you *can* have up to four people playing (but best when played with two), but has air dashes, assists, and really easy chain combos that anyone can do. The mechanics are really good, easy to learn but not so simple that you can't play some fun mind games and stuff. Well the ultimate flaw is the way the assist system works (you can use assists while in hit stun, so you can break combos and then combo your opponent if you have enough meter). That and certain characters seem to have loops/tactics that cannot be beaten without the right assists. It's broken but it's still awesome fun!

Mario Kart DS 5/5

Heaps of content, plenty of courses to time trial, it's a Mario Kart that has online and snaking, that is awesome.

Tetris DS 5/5

It's like, Tetris right, but you can own people online! That is SO worth the ridiculous amount of money I spent on this!

Metroid Prime: Hunters 2/5

While it's pretty, the single player is reaaally boring and the online is crap. Judging as an FPS (and not an adventure game in first person) it's terrible because the mechanics just aren't made for it, morph ball spam is gay, and because your shots are so slow that you have to predict where your opponent is going to go in order to hit them.

Final Fantasy III 4/5

Characters, story, game world, were all meh. But I found the class system to be so addictive. Boss battles were awesome and actually strategic. I liked it even though it made me sleepy at times.

Sim City Creator.

Well built and highly addictive Sim game for the DS that fixes the issues that the previous game had, and the "from dawn of civilisation" campaign element works really well. Great game.

Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters **** 1/2

Shut up. I loved this game a surprising amount, it was a complete blast. And I found it in the bargain bin, too~!

This has been the only game that I have been playing for a while, will refresh memory before posting more. But Tekken DR 3.16?? It's a solid ****, **** 1/2 affair~!!! <.<

Castlevania Portrait of Ruin - 3.5/5
Overall good, but the backtracking can be annoying at times plus the last boss is a total bitch

Was disappointed with the ending then I realised (with the help of a faq) that it was the bad ending and there was still loads of the game left.

New Super Mario Bros. 4/5
Excellent game, one of my favourite on DS. Takes elements from Super Mario 1+3, + Super Mario World (such as hidden exits) and wraps them together in a fun game. It pinches the triple jump from Mario 64 but it's a bit useless in practice. Shame you CAN NOT SAVE whenever you want to. There are specific "save" points, that once used can not be used again. Think Resident Evil 1 with the type writer. Other than the stupidity of not including a save anywhere feature on a handheld (like the GBA mario advance series) this mario game is awesome, and it's great fun finding the hidden extras in the levels. It's one of the easier mario games too, which makes it more accessible for people who have not played previous games in the series.
[edit] Once you have completed the game for the first time, you can save your progress on the map screen any time (like Super Mario World and Mario All Stars) on the 2nd play through.

Project Rub 2.5/5
Great use of the stylus and touch-screen. Certainly worth picking up cheap (say $15-$25) but only good for short bursts of play, seeing as some stages WILL drive you insane. Plenty of challenge for those who want it - it's all quick mini-games, where you have to pass about 4 levels of the same task (it gets more difficult each time). Some of the mini-games are very inventive and hilarious, but not on the level of Wario Ware.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village 3/5
A really polished game with a lovely art style and quirky characters. This game could have been released with just the puzzles, like say Brain Training. But the story and characters make it more interesting. Another one that suits playing for short periods of time, as the puzzles can be very challenging (though not impossible). Often it's best to play something else, and your brain will keep thinking in the background and give you the answer.

Personally, I usually hate this kind of puzzle game, as most puzzle games drive me nuts and offer no enjoyment, I'd rather be shooting things and making things explode. But Professor Layton is the exception, I really enjoy this game and the execution on the DS is just flawless. Hint coins, and opportunities to retry puzzles make this game easy for almost anyone to pick up and play, but not everyone will finish it. Several sequels are already on the way for those who do enjoy it.

*Okay, I'm going to add Giana Sisters and Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure into this list dealio ka-gigger, but not right now.

Mainly because this thread suits me better and the "review" thread is too needlessly complicated (I have no idea how to put in those rating icon things).
