I haven't played in about a year or so and the first place I went to was the underwater zone (forget what it's called) where I almost drowned until I done the first quest there and got my sea legs ability. If it wasn't for the quest toggle that lets you quickly see where the quests are I be lost for sure.

I do not like tanks one bit.
Since cataclysm made tanking require brains again or to an extent i never queue as dps anymore.
Half the time we're in the middle of a fight and I'll throw on my sword and shield and drop into defensive cos the tank got overzealous and died to too many people, or stood in the fire, or something.
I don't know how pure dps classes even cope.

Had a play of cata at claire's today. It might strike as a strange comment, but what stuck out for me is that it's fundamentally the same game. I mean, that should be obvious, right? I suppose when you hear about an expansion, the world torn asunder, and so on - you expect some really fundamental changes, but it was quite strange to see... you still do dailies, to earn stuff, to exchange for other stuff. Everything was a little cooler and frillier, buffed around the edges with a few extra knobs and buttons to fill out the experience. Which isn't bad, and indeed if the formula is working for 99% of the player-base then Cata is perfect.
I likened it to Claire of meeting an old friend whom you hadn't caught up with in a while. He's moved in to a bigger place and has a new car, he's seeing a new girl who's a lot like the one before. He still calls you buddy and has a firm handshake. Of course, he also still turns up late for everything and is fickle with appointments. He possesses a vague streak of misogyny you find distasteful and is known to be too honest when he drinks.
(From what I can gather), Arena is still pretty imbalanced and rated BGs hasn't effectively been fleshed out yet. The size of the world is still somewhat trivialised by flying mounts, ports, and the LFG system. Gold sinks are still not really sufficient to maintain a skewed economy. Balancing for multiple skill-levels is harder than ever. GearScore never got under control, and had to be internalised and given undue credit. The levelling process is still fundamentally boring and the focus is on making it shorter rather than more fun. Like the above friend, it's perhaps silly to wish for the bad things to go away -- but if you can overlook them then you might have something there.
** To add some balance, I'll concede they seemed to have learned from Dalaran (in having a larger Orgrimmar) and the difficulity level of Heroics seems pitched better.
Anyone else have anything to weigh in on what they felt the big issues were in WoTLK and rather or not they've been improved upon?

The sheep? Yeah that was fixed fairly quickly. The Terrordale cave in EPL is still the best I know of, and the old python boss' area in ZG has a lot of snakes. The EPL cave has more, but the ones in ZG respawn constantly. Not being able to downrank spells makes it pretty slow going even if you AoE. A Warlock with that Hellfire-while-moving talent would be the best bet.
Anyhoo, we're not really racing for it as you need to get exalted for the pet anyway, I just like having the counter there because it makes for fun short-term goals.

So as per a recent post about auctioning, I've been playing the AH a little bit since just prior to The Shattering. During one of my scans back then I snapped up the Kaldorei Spider Kabob recipe for the princely sum of 750g. As it's a recipe the deposit is something like 1c, so I've relisted and relisted and relisted with hopes that one day a collector with a lot of gold will come along and buy it. That day just came.

On another note I am growing tired of WoW again, so I have pre-ordered a new MMO by the name of RIFT. I've been in the Beta for some time now and I am very impressed. It's basically WoW meets EQ2 via Vangard. The lore is quite rich and the gameplay is amazing. The developers have really been taking on board any suggestions by the community and thus far it's working really well.
Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else is interested in checking it out. The class system is excellent in that you pick a class and 2 sub classes (from the same archetype, Mage, Warrior, Cleric or Rogue) from which you can mix and match abilities. Given there is some 20 classes it is making for some really interesting gameplay.

Fury's pretty middle-of-the-road atm, which is fantastic for us! though i fear that when the next couple of tiers roll out and we get to 27% hit that we'll probably get nerfed because of the huge dps we'll be pulling. atm me and a couple other fury's can only get 20% and that's with reforging and mostly purples with a couple blues.

It's pretty cool for armor, but I'm not sure I agree with having guns changeable to bows if you can't change a staff to a mace, etc.. There'll be soooo many tears from people that have long deleted all their gear. :D Then people will have to go through the old instances and realise how easy they have it now compared to back when loot was left to chance, not operating on a funbucks system like it does now. Once that happens, I also foresee people complaining that some classes can solo those old dungeons, mine can't, nerf those classes.
I like how they're pretty much conceding that today's gear looks like shit compared to tier 2.
TSplodey

People have wanted this for a long time before 'the gear became shit looking'. Priest T5/6/8 and maybe even 10 all look better than T2 anyway (T2 isnt bad looking by any stretch, but its not the pinnacle of Priest design).

That's how everyone envision's it, but it's also the worst way to describe how they do changes. It would be more like a Word document file with table charts.
Nobody know's how Blizzard edit's the changes to the classes inside of the actual engine, but it would require alot more than just flicking a low poly count switch.

Ouch, that hurts :/ I've managed to do a Psych undergrad and an Advanced Dip. in IT in that time :P
I think Teegs, etc still play on Frostmourne. Although I could be wrong...
It is worth coming back. Leveling is a lot more refined and the LFR (Looking for Raid) feature means you can still raid without being in a hardcore raiding guild. It is a cross realm system similar to the Dungeon Finder except you are only eligible for loot from each boss once a week. The encounters are a lot easier also, and the ilvl of the gear reflects that.
Still, the game is better than ever if you want to play casually.

I'm trying to think back now... I mean, when I started, I was only a first year. I think I was still playing when I moved out of my folks house, which would've been... late 2009. At that point I was just handing in my honours thesis. '10 I worked full-time, '11 I worked part time with Masters... so yeah, that adds up I think. Still 2-3 years to go.
I never really had that post-WoW aversion to it that so many people have. WoW and I left each other on good terms, and yeah, I just want to play casually. I'm debating levelling another hunter (with the new focus sytem) or druid, or maybe a warlock. If I can hit 85 and do a handful of dungeons then quit, then I'll be happy :)
Add my realid guys: sytadel@gmail.com. I'm still on SC2 occasionally.

Yeah I remember why I like this game so much.
I think WoW was having a sort of identity crisis when I left - didn't know whether to be casual or hardcore; in PvP, didn't know whether to be battlegrounds or arena. Seems like it's come in to it's own now. I do have nostalgia for "hardcore WoW," but I prefer casual WoW to the ambiguous hybrid it was a few years ago. I mean, Azuregos is a bohemian in a relationship with a spirit healer and the whole Goblin "haha we're capitalist engineers" is taken to the Nth degre... but it has an appeal.
I'm a Lv.21 Goblin Rogue.

I think when it comes to end game, wow is still a bit of a hybrid.
You have LFR which is raids made easy, cross realm, with lower ilvl gear. Then conversely you have the 10 and 25 man raids with Hard Modes which are quite hard.

Lv.45 so far. I've been playing a fair bit (cough), but just casually, mixing grouping, quests, levelling professions, and general toomfoolery. I'm in some lame pre-raiding Perth guild, but it's good to have people to chat to.
Amazed at how much of the content is new. Aside from 1-2 ashenvale quests and a handful of feralas quests, I haven't done any quest yet that was in vanilla WoW.

What amazes me is how I have absolutely no idea how good any character is, unless I specifically inspect them and check the ilvl of their gear. Between transmog, easy epics, and hundreds of different epic flyers, everyone looks decked out. The flyers in particular surprise me - used to just be racials, drakes, and a few special mounts... now there's all sorts of stuff.

380+ is about the benchmark for decently geared for raiding, 390+ means they're probably in a guild who is raiding good content.
GearScore is still around, but called PlayerScore. It's got it's uses, like seeing if people are decked out in PvP gear or not.

That seems about right. I've heard that there are some items out there that are 400+ now (someone linked this guy (http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/%D1%81%D0%B2%D0%B5%D0%B6%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%82%D 0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C-%D0%B4%D1%83%D1%88/%D0%98%D0%BC%D0%B1%D0%BE%D1%81/simple) to me). Apparently Blizz uses it now also to determine what raids you can/can't do using LFR/LFG?
Just had Baron's mount drop but lost the roll :(. My first assumption was that now the mount drops all the time (reasonable given how casual the game has gotten), but apparently it is in fact still a 1-in-100 sort of thing.
TrinityJayOne
15-01-2012, 12:33 PM
They do, but Blizz use their own internal version that can't be BS'd as easily. GearScore literally just checks the iLvl of your gear, assigns values to your gems then adds it all together. A Rogue could wear Druid healing PvP gear socketed with +spi and have a great GearScore rating. At least it worked like that for the longest time, maybe they've improved it.
JubeiSaotome
16-01-2012, 12:31 AM
Yeah, ilvl is the in game check for dungeon levels, but people still use achievements and other stuff to measure a player's ability. The new set of dungeons pretty much set you up with a gear set to walk into the LFR dungeons with.

Yeah 372 is the minimum for LFR, so I'd say 380+ is "Geared."
I think I am about 382 ilvl, however I am just a sub these days due to work. Some of the guys in my guild (5/8 HMs) are close to, if not, 400+.
I really appreciate LFR though, it makes the game worth playing for someone like myself. I have spent all week at seminars and can't raid, but with LFR I am not entirely missing out.

Outland and Northrend are untouched. I really wish Blizz had done at least something with those areas, as you spend more time getting from 60-80 than you do getting from 1-60. :(
