This is pretty much how I felt when I tried to kill the Congalala.
Ahh is Congalala actually considered hard?
That sounded smart arse but I mean it, Hes the reason I picked this up then put it down again.
That and I couldn't really find a weapon style that I could groove with.
Congalala can be hardish when you start. But no, it isn't that hard.

Wait till you fight the monster in the pic, Azure Rathalos!
Have you beaten Kut Ku yet?

Ok, the main thing you need to learn is that you can't kill a monster if you're dead.
In most games I never worry about things like blocking/dodging etc and just focus on damage output and it's not a problem.
Monster Hunter is very different, the damage output difference between you and a monster is huge.
It's like trying to fight a car, you can't do it head on.
You need to chip away at it piece by piece and stay alive.
Here's a test/help thing.
Take on the monster you want to kill. Don't fight it, avoid it for 5 mins without healing.
That should help.
Also, at first, before you learn a monsters behaviour and timing, do one hit, roll, reposition, wait for opening, one hit, roll repeat.

Quatters, if I haven't beaten Congalala do you really think I would try to fight Kut Ku? :P
I might try doing all the slaying quests and easier stuff and just boost my weapons and armour (and buy some bombs) before giving Congalala another shot.
Oh BTW, how do those Tranq bombs work? It says you can capture a monster alive if it's trapped... do shock traps count?

Kut Ku and Congalala are about the same difficulty.
To capture a monster you need to do a fair bit of damage before it's limping.
Shock or Pitfall trap, then hit it with 2 tranq bombs.

I'm thinking he means Gypceros.
Tactics for Gypceros are pretty much the same as YKK, but it'd be best to bring some antidote along just in case. Pretty much any weapon type should do the job.
Defensive tactics: Aside from basic charges, pecks and tailswipes, the other attacks you have to look out for are his poison spits and his crystal flash.
Before Gypceros does a crystal flash, it will flap its wings and make 'sneezing' sounds. To avoid being knocked out/dizzied by the flash, either block or dive (run + roll in the presence of a wyvern). Another good counter to the flash is a full velociprey set of armour - this makes you immune to KO effects.
Offensive tactics: Keep in mind that Gyp's legs are tough, and attacking these will probably cause your weapon to bounce off, causing little damage. Aim for his body or head - you may find standing underneath him can be an effective tactic, but be careful how you place yourself to avoid tailswipes/charges.
Oh, and I'm on holidays and have started playing again. >_>

Another way to stop the flash is break the crystal on his head, or stun him while he's doing the "sneezing" thing.

True, but I'd call each of those advanced tactics, which probably aren't that viable for a undergeared beginner.
Oh yeah - I almost forgot - when Gyp plays dead, get well back, as the following thrashing attack will often one-shot a hunter in basic gear. Use this as an opportunity to repaint (with paintballs) the Gyp, as this will usually rouse it from its ploy and help you keep track of it in its weakened state.

In case anyone cares- I re-did the Conga slaying quest so I could get another Conga Pelt and make a War Drum (a kind of Hunting Horn) with 600+ attack. Also, if you want to upgrade your armour, check the farm between every quest, because the mining section is an excellent source of Armor Spheres.

I was telling Quatters about this Monster Hunter themed dream I had, and he said I should post it here. So here goes:
I was at my house in Pokke Village, and I was hosting a party there for some reason. We were in the kitchen, which was really big and had 4 or more tables. The place was full of people who looked like hunters just mingling and having a laugh. Then it was time for the feast, so everyone took a seat.
Now, I was sitting there thinking 'No problems, the Felyne will cook up 12 steaks and we'll go from there', but for some reason, the Felyne only knew how to cook vegetables. An 'order food' menu appeared in front of me (it's a dream so it doesn't need to make sense) and all I could order was one vegetable at a time. I was thinking 'Why can't I get meat? I THOUGHT YOUR SPECIALTY WAS MEAT!!!'
I think at some point, I was waving a piece of raw meat in the Felyne's face and saying stuff like 'Cook this! You're supposed to cook this!'
At another point, I was eating a roasted potato and trying to convince the guy across the table that it was really, really good.
Eventually, everyone got fed up and left, and I was sitting in the kitchen thinking 'Okay, next thing I'm doing is hiring more Felynes'.
Which is strange, because the Felyne I currently have is an awesome cook.

So question - I know I don't play enough Monster Hunter, etc. etc., but hey - the shirt. It's awesome. I want one. So tell me - what size should I go for? In terms of Australian clothes, I wear M and L, depending on the make. What would you suggest? Is there a Monster Hunter T-Shirt size cm measurement guide anywhere?

Yeah Quatters, why are you breaking people's shit all the time?
You didn't even know this guy and you broke it. Tsk.
EDIT: I have been playing Monster Hunter for about 4 hours now and still haven't finished a mission. I simply cannot hunt the giadrome.
The difficulty of this game is worse then Ninja gaiden. How did you get so good Quatters? What am I doing wrong?
I have tried using multiple weapons such as the double swords, gunlance and bowgun (upgraded bow gun to lvl 5 with scope), tried upgrading armor with the armor spheres, but for the life of me I can't do it.
After the long ass trek to map 6 I take on some little giaprey, not too much hassle. The big Giadrome comes out and the music changes (I'm guessing this is him right?) I attack him while watching if he jumps and roll quite often. Already taken hot drink and have 9 medkits (but I can never use them because I get attacked). I've weakened him to a stage where he runs off. I threw a paintball and followed him, but when I got there he was with more giaprey that killed me while I was attacking the giadrome.
I'm sick of losing and being wheeled back into action by some stupid ass cats.
Can you either

B) Tell me the best thing to do so I can stop crying.

I find the best weapon to kill Giadrome with (when you're starting out) is the sword and shield. You can roll to dodge his attacks and block in emergencies. If you get good at rolling around, you can also try the Hunting Horn- a few hits to the head and the Giadrome will be stunned and open for attack.
But as Quatters has said before, the key is to keep moving and dodge every attack. That's really the best way to kill Giadrome, and once you get good at it you'll find Giadrome is fairly easy.
Also, if you paintball him, don't immediately chase him when he runs off. Take time to refill your energy bar, stamina, sharpen weapons or take a hot drink if you think the effect may wear off in the middle of the next fight. Then when you chase him, you're as good as when you started but he's much much weaker. Rinse and repeat until he eventually dies.
Also, here's one of the most important bits of advice Quatters ever gave me (though if you check the combine list you'll probably find it yourself). Herb + Blue Mushroom = Potion. Potion + Honey = Mega Potion. ;)

Mr M has got it, use when monsters run to heal, re-stamina, sharpen etc.
Don't worry about paintballing Giadromes.
They only go from one area to the next, they can't fly and skip areas like wyverns!
Also as Mr M has said, roll roll roll!
Take out the Giaprey first, it makes it much easier.
Also with online you can only do the Guild Hall missions and some training missions online.
Elder and Tutorial training are solo only.

Kut Ku is easy compared to other wyverns, but is also considered one of the hardest monsters as you've faced nothing like him before hand.
Khezu still annoys me, lousy flabby bastard.
Also, congratulations to Maxi who finally achieved G Rank today!
It was actually quite funny, we were taking on Shen Gaoren Urgent quest for him to reach HR4, and we'd done so much damage and target it's legs so well, it was struggling to move. Time was running out so we had to leave it alone so it could reach area 5 so we could actually kill it and not just get a repel!
It took about 10 seconds to kill it once it entered area 5!

Isn't Kut Ku D really shit? I can't really remember :/
Anyway, against the Blangonga, I think I was wearing a full Kehzu set. Dam I killed a lot of Kezhu's to get it though!
And Blangonga isn't too hard. Have a fire weapon, and don't stay in one spot too long. It's quick, so it's very much a hit and roll enemy.
With the Plesioth, always try to attack it from the front. You'll know when it will shoot water, and it can't do it's ****ing hip check on you. God I hated that!

Kut Ku D is basically what I'm wearing now but with a higher defense and some +elmattack, I can't craft much else at the moment as I haven't received any machalite ore since about 60 hunts ago, So yay for Mining Spot +1 now !
Took down Blangonga what an easy bitch used a Red Saber and took him down in about 6-7 minutes, found if you just attack slightly behind his front legs or stand inside him he can't really do much to you.
Took down Plesioth as well hes just as easy and dumb as Cephadrome, stand slightly in front and he mostly just water jets which lets you get a nice amount of hits in on his face.
Time to take on Monoblos =\
Monoblos isn't too hard, I took one out this morning. Granted, I did have a greatsword which does ~750 raw and ~150 dragon damage, but still!!
Hit and roll. When it does it's charge, if you're in between it legs, it won't hit you. Also, cutting its tail off makes it easier.

Cheers for the advice, only thing is i'm a SnS user so cutting things tails off aren't really that much of an option. I also can't seem to break any fangs or anything off of monsters like Blangonga, I would upgrade my longswords but yet again no machalite ore blocks my path.
We should put together a list similar to the wow friends of locations of the monster hunters here for if anyone wants to meet up and team hunt the guild quests.
Edit -
Got bomb mining and then got 6 stacks of x2 Machalite ore, yay for new weapons and armour.
Also, Lol Basarios are you serious? took down the Kut-ku + Blue Kut-ku thought it might be a bit harder but was fairly simple, gonna try my hand at Monoblos sometime today. And if I feel game the Kushala Daora

Blangonga isn't too hard, use fire weapons to break it's fangs!

Took down Plesioth fairly easily got smashed by Green Plesioth :(, crafted an eager cleaver and took him down easily enough.
Blangonga is way gone same with Monoblos.
Kushala is still giving me difficulty as I need to craft a new armour set but don't have all the parts yet.
Have to go back and fight Rathalos, figure I should be able to beat him by now.
Edit -
Took down Rathalos & Red Khezu, huzzah my list of dead grows larger.

I only have elder & guild 4* unlocked so far so unless theirs a special way to get to the tower.
And even if i get thunderbug juice I still need Kirin Tails...
Crafting some Cenetaur armour at the moment, seems fairly nice gemming it with a +1 def to negate the minus and then some health and maybe some +att gems.

So i guess no-one is here to discuss now with mr quatters gone :P
I've progressed a heap, now wearing full black diablos(I think) armour with a devil slicer, have nearly cleared out all the 5* elders, only got the other tigrex and the chameleos to go.
Started hitting it up with a regular hunting friend now got him to HR2 last time and we're going to take on the Rathian/Rathalos today to upgrade our poison weps so that he can take on kushala and have a fair chance.
This game is pretty rad and with MHP2G it's added quite a few features, also those rarity 10 weapons look soooo good, 1428 raw with purple sharpness and 720 lightning /drool.
should hopefully be able to fight a Lao Shan soon and make my fire dragonsword.

Well I'm still here.
I haven't played in a while, been trying to finish Crisis Core, then it's back to HR5 missions for me.
As far as poison long swords, you need a Rathian Spike and Rathian Plates which are rare as hell until you get to G Rank. So don't kill heaps as it's not worhtwhile.

unlocked the lao shan which i'll have to kill a few times for att+def charms and some nice dragon weps, only got a few 6* elders to go then it's onto the felyne elders, essentially just G rank elder quests.

Do you have an English patch for 2ndG or playing in Japanese?
It's an english patch but so far it looks like it just patched in all the english text from MHF2 and a little bit of the exp pack, i.e wepas armours few quests.
Did a few of the Rathian + Rathalos to finish off my rathalos mail and ended up getting the bits i needed for my Verde, Lunastra went down with ease.
Also just managed to repel the Lao shan at 3% fortress integrity he has 24k life and i got him down to 9.3k, went back and slayed him, yay for Fire Dragon Sword took him down to 1.7 and got an easy repel on my next try !
Now to do the 6* and unlock felyne elders to get some serious gear.
-edit to not double post-
Only 3 elders to go !! pink ian, teo & normal and black diablos, i've heard the dual diablos is pretty hardcore so i'll go pink ian then teo tonight and have a crack at it, then it's whatever the urgent is in MHP2G

Shen Gaoren & Hypnoc are down !
Shen nearly beat me, I kept rotating around his legs dishing out the pain when I noticed you can just keep mashing into one and everytime he tries to attack he falls, killed him 2 seconds before time up :P
Hypnoc is one of the easier monsters i've faced, hes just the kut ku but a bit faster & alot more control over his movements, i.e when he charges he can recharge and then claw instead of fall over he can also spit sleep gas.
Time to do some G ranks and get my true devil slicer then howling devil !
Yay for Monster hunter.

You get to fight naruga, tigrex, rajang, rathalos all in one arena battle.
or the one thats got me the most worried is dual green plessies *shudder*
I taught my cat the paralysis attack skill, takes about 5 minutes for him to actually activate it but when he does it's a 6-8 second window of straight dps.

Lol must have changed in the transition between freedom and 2g, only gives +13 for att up and +12 for earplug, so gotta gem it for att up large and HGE, don't get RA for a while yet now.
And it adds a fair amount of damage for now untill i can get adrenaline +2 or RA, also crafted my true devil slicer now to work on my howling devil.
Also took down teo in one round as well as a lao shan and shen gaoren ! yay
And did an "endurance" quest, kill kut ku then daimyo then plesioth. Was exhausting.

Anyone still play this? I've just started, picked it up from GAME online for 20 new if anyone's interested. Very deep, I'm trying to work out whether to really get into it or to avoid playing it so I don't waste too much time playing it. At the moment I'm leaning towards really getting into it, have a broken leg atm so have some time to kill, but not that much.
Building up my Pokke Farm at the moment, very boring but I guess the rewards will pay off :/ I've found the best way to do it so far (only just completed the 1 star missions, didn't want to start on the next lot til I get a decent set of armour) is delivering carnivore eggs, probably the most boring thing to do aswell :/
I really like that little pig in a nappy ha ha ha. He's only gotten angry with me once so far.
Trying to roleplay using the bow exclusively so we'll see how that goes, the psssps awkwardness re: nub and pad doesn't help. Sometimes my little fingers go tingley which isn't good :(
Anyway, I have a question for any Monster Hunter aficionados - please help! When I'm looking to create armour, some of them have little flashing red exclamation marks besides them... what does this mean please? I'm assuming it means I cannot get them made for some reason but why? WHY?!?

The flashing red exclamation marks mean that it's a new item you've unlocked by acquiring some of its component parts/fulfilling its requirements.

I highly recommend switching weapons. Every weapon has advantages / disadvantages that match the strengths and weaknesses of certain monsters. Learn how to use every weapon and find the right weapon for the job!
Tougher weapons like the Great Sword and Hammer are initially difficult to get a grasp of but can be absolutely brutal in taking down monsters. I'm favouring them heavily at the moment.
Cannot wait for the Monster Hunter Tri!

Could you expand on this? You can control the camera, so I really don't see how that's an issue. Also, I don't know how you can say it has horrid controls, they work perfectly well.

But you really need a second stick to properly control the camera. It's been a while since I played it, so I dunno any specifics, but I just remember the control scheme being fiddly and cumbersome. Was there no lock-on as well? I got to the end of the tutorial missions, then realised the game was an absolute chore for me. I just spent so much time wandering around fairly looking for shit, and just didn't have any real fun. It might have gotten better, but I just couldn't be bothered.
Yeah, the tutorial missions are the biggest bitch! They're sooooooo boring. I remember I gave up about halfway through them, then picked it up about a week later, polished the rest off, and then got into the game proper, and I've got over 150 hours on it. And I'm not even as bad as Quatters, who would probably have 400+ hours by now O_o

sidochrome
07-05-2009, 03:03 PM
Egg carrying's totally optional in MH2, and a breeze if you sort out an armour set with the 'backpacker' trait.
I definitely think MH is a very Japanese game, and is unnecessarily obtuse in a number of ways, but that definitely gives way to considerable depth.
Once you get accustomed to operating the camera, you can start to appreciate the freedom and precision that the system allows for - you can determine exactly where you lay your blade, an ability which becomes increasingly important as the game goes on.
Ultimately, your milage depends entirely on your willingness to push through the initial 'control barrier', and whether you have anyone else to play multiplayer with.

Hmmm... okay I will (reluctantly) take your advice. At the moment I have just made it to the jungle after (mindlessly) developing my Pokke Farm through egg carrying. I'm not able to kill crabs consistently without taking damage using the bow. I haven't tried much and have just learnt to roll out the way before a big swing but still very awkard. At the moment I run away, turn 180 degrees just before I stop, pray I have put some distance between myself and the crab (as I can't adjust the camera while running :( ), fumble with the dpad to line up the shot, charge up my bow for as long as I think is permissable, then hammer dive like mad to try and dive out the way before I get hit. It really is very awkward and is pissing me off to be honest. Mind you I have only gone to the jungle twice now, heh heh.
Can people kill crabs with ease using a bow or is my difficulty due to poor weapon selection? My technique is developing so hopefully one day I will look back and laugh at my ineptitude...
The tutorials were insanely mindnumbing... flipping back through this thread I saw a post complaining there wasn't a good enough tutorial ha ha.
Still tossing up whether this game is massively fun or a massive waste of time. And those insects really shit me off too.
Good to see other people are still playing. MH's only coming to the Wii, right? I've only got a 360. This game would be much more fun with 2 players. In Japan I imagine you could just wave your psp around on the train and find someone to team up with :(

IMO ditch the bow for now - I'm pretty sure it's less effective against the tough carapace of crabs.
My preference vs crabs is either a nice SNS (Sword 'n' Shield) or a katana. They're highly mobile, so the extra manoeuvrability will serve you well.

As a 150% lover of the game (who doesn't have as much free time as many others), I completely agree with watchers_eye that the controls are horrendously cumbersome in the area of camera control. Sometimes as I fight the big hunts my hands are twisted in this retarded fashion as my fingers manipulate the D-Pad (camera) while my thumb runs my character around.
No fault of the game, mind you, but hand-cramping nonetheless. Fantastic game, totally picked it up recently, totally loving it. I'm no longer scared of the desert, either <_<

You don't have a lot of free time? Hmm... that is ironic considering it seems like you have more games than anyone else in the world from your posts of obtaining new games ha ha.
I really hope it's not imperative to manipulate the dpad and the nub at the same time because I have considered the need for this also but it seems like so much effort... I want to, y'know, relax when I play v-games.
BTW here's that pep I owe you for helping me with the case of the missing beehive and hidden dung.

Yeah, probably good advice. The bow is so awkward against the speed of crabs but I like to pretend I'm Legalos running around ha ha. I don't mind the amount of hits needed, but I hate unavoidable damage. I might need to give the katana a go though, I didn't do all of the weapons training missions because, y'know, I was already driven to insanity by that stage. Might retry now :) Can people kill a crab easily with a bow w/o taking damage?

Thanks again for the advice Ashmaran and sidochrome. It has convinced me to give up my Legalos fantasies (don't take that the wrong way) and learn at least a second weapon, so you've probably saved me endless frustration of getting cheapshotted to death by a crab I can't outrun. Back to the weapons training missions for me then! Even Legalos used those little twin knives I guess...
I've decided I've been spending too much time doing "chores" rather than just playing the game. Now that my Pokke farm is reasonably built up I'ma try and plough through some quests. I'm in desperate need of a new bow also, I'm still using a hunter's bow one normally with no coating, probably making the game more painful than it needs to be, so I need to find out what drops a large monster bone, hopefully something soon.
I also have a hell of a lot of materials now but the problem is I only have a few of the ones I need, particularly honey and nitroshrooms for power coatings, and atm there isn't an easy way to trade items. I'm not going to buy and sell... the mark up is absolutely insane!!! 1000%.

I've been playing this again in preparation of MHF Unite. I just captured a Congalala, a monster that I've never defeated before!
@ WhyMe- I have no problems or discomforts manipulating the camera, even in the heat of battle. Strange, I know.
@ people talking about weapons- Hunting Horn is my weapon of choice, plus the one I'm currently using is a War Drum. How can you not love a weapon that allows you to play drum solos to power up your stats, before charging in and belting Giapreys/Velocipreys so hard they literally go flying? That's almost approaching shotgun-battleaxe territory. :p
Also, there was one time where I was fighting a Piscene (I think that's the name? There's an early mission where you have to gather 8 of their livers) and I could see the cloud of sand moving along the ground. I sprinted in a direction so that I would intercept the cloud, pressed triangle to draw the War Drum with an uppercut swing, made perfect contact with the cloud, and the Piscene came flying out of the ground, up into the air as high as it can go, and landed in front of me, dead. One of my favourite gaming moments of all time. :p

The weapon only has about 634 attack. The reason why the Piscene came flying out of the ground was:
A: That's the standard animation if you hit the death blow when it's underground, and
B: I'd already hit it a few times
However, it was so perfectly choerographed that it really looked like I'd hit it out of the ground. :p
It's pretty much a hammer with all the cool attacks traded for songs. Which are only really good for multiplayer >_>
Things such as ATK up, ATKs harder to break, movement speed up, etc. are still very useful in one player.
And besides, I expect to be playing a lot of multi with MHF Unite, so either way it'll be useful.
On another note, will my Asian (English) save of MHF2 transfer to a US or Aus copy of MHF Unite?
And on a completely different note, what's you preferred weapon Maxi?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. I thought "****, you're just up to that mission and you can OHKO those things?"
I see ;)
And on a completely different note, what's you preferred weapon Maxi?
I use the Greatsword. I find it easier to use then the hammer, and it can cut off tails. The only problem with it is when I play multiplayer and I do an upswing, I can send the other players flying :P
But yeah, single player I think it's brilliant. It's a one hit -> roll weapon because of it's speed though.
I've also used bow, which I don't like too much. It's kinda fun but kinda not, even in multi (with a three team party). And I used to use the Dual Blades and Sword and Shield, both which are good (I prefer the SnS tbh) but extremely weak, which is the main reason I went to GS.

It definitely is an expansion to MHF2, but more than the new monsters/weapons/zones, a lot of the changes/tweaks to the game's features (felyne comrades, data install, ability to buy straight to your storage from merchants) are really good and kick it up another notch.
That said, exporting a character straight across didn't really feel like it was offering me a wealth of new quests right off the bat, so I've opted to start a new save slot with the MHF1 -> MHF2 style transfer that converts your items into cash and sets you back at the beginning to get a better appreciation for what's changed. I've still got my uber-save there for epic questing, of course.

On Pokke Farm, the Felyne standing next to the Item Box says there's a Beehive 'on the right'. I can't find it anywhere!

Might grab MHFU later today, but I have a feeling that camera is going to piss me off.

Mr M... ha ha I had this problem also and I PMd WhyMe about it, who also had the same problem.
YMe informed me you need to purchase it first, even though the cat says there's one there at the moment.
You can dig up poop under the bull though. I think it is used in a hot drink recipe or something, I am not sure.

You plant poo with your crops and you get a bigger yield.

That bastard Felyne, deceiving me like that!
And yeah, the best use for dung is for fertiliser, as Maxi already pointed out.

I don't get it. Is it a Starbucks joke or something?
Also, a Mastodon sans trunk and ears does not qualify as a bull. :p
