Not that far!! Neither of us has even finished the training!!
But yea, bows are freaking sweet! The only problem is that Quatters ruined my PSP's d pad a while ago, so up don't work properly, which makes it hard to aim... Also, yea, they're weak as shit, but so fun anyway! And melee attacks are with an arrow!! AWESOME!!

Indeed, I haven't played much more -- my uni is currently raping my spare time, but I finish in ONE WEEK! So I'll be back into it hopefully then!
I'm only 10hrs in, up to the 2-star elder quests, having a bit of trouble with them, so last time I played it I was getting armor, thanks to the kind assistance of Ashmaran!
It's really an excellent game!
I use Short & Shield, though Longsword & Bow have also perked my interest -- and not because Quatters & Maxi are using them (coincidence!). I watched a clip of a guy beat two Wyverns with a Longsword (or was it Greatsword? There was a CHARGE attack!) and I was like "I like that!", and I had a ton of fun with the bow, too, and its the only thing that hits those stupid bugs!
Regardless, this game is well worth a purchase if you're willing to put the time into it! Don't expect an easy, casual game though!
Look forward to me being a member of the "Official Hyperactive Monster Hunter 3 Wii Online" troupe! Be there, or be square!

Why is there no thread for this?
Due to a lack of 'Hunt love, we just kept the MH2/MHF2 discussion rolling in the MH PS2 thread (http://www.hyperactive.com.au/showthread.php?t=783&page=92&pp=10).
I'm a little over 120 hours in so far, and I've cleared almost all the Elder quests barring Lunastra/Teostra and I'm up to HR3.
Got quite a few weapons and armor sets, but I finished off a Black Diablos set last week, and I just started on slotting it with decorations this morning. Got its wind resistance up to 'Dragon Breaker' status, but incurred a 'fate' penalty in the process, so I'll have to tune it a little more.
I've been pretty busy of late, so I've been finding that I can knock over a few training quests on the train to and from work. I've cleared up to Diamyo Hermitaur, and I've started on Blangonga.

I haven't played much of this game because of other gaming commitments, but from the several hours I have put into it I will say it's certainly a very pretty game. Unfortunately the load times are nigh on unforgivable, but the gunlance makes up for it. Kinda.
Anybody here know if the PSP 2000 (goddamn I hate that name.) has any significant affect on the load times?
WhyMe
24-10-2007, 08:43 PM
As an owner of a PSP-2000, I'd say that I would never even consider the load times an issue in this game at all...
Tuki, yeah, the PSP Slim (it sounds better than the 7 year late 2000 :/ ) has quicker load times. When me and Quatters played, even if I'd go to an area before him, his would load quicker :(

Played a few quests with Maxi, so much fun!
Only one weird thing. A few times with mundane enemies, there would be non-existant enemies.
For example, I'd be fighting one in my screen and Maxi would be fighting one in his, but I couldn't see his, nor be affected by it and the same for him.
However fortunately with "Boss" creatures like Giadromes and Bulldromes we didn't have such an issue!

This is basically how MH's network code cuts a few corners. Smaller creatures, or 'minions', movements are not transmitted between systems, but their heath is. Boss monsters, as you can tell, are networked.
While it seems a bit shifty at first, this ruthlessly efficient network coding allowed you to play essentially lag free from Australia on the European-based servers in PH1 on PS2, and presumably reduces battery drain for ad-hoc play on PSP. When battles are 90%+ about battling the wyvern, it's really not much of an issue.
Certainly gives you an excuse for upswinging your fellow hunters off cliffs with a GS... 'there was a vespoid attacking me'. >_>
I repelled Teo last night with no apparent changes... I guess I must need to mop up some 5* quests like Kirin. Time to STOP my little pony with some HAMMERTIME using my Dead Revolver, it seems.

Sido I have completed all the village elder quests but no farm upgrades. I think we need to get HR4 for that. Either that or fight the giant enemy crab ;)
I've completed all the blangonga training missions now, man that Hammer one was a pain in the arse. Hammer is so slow to attack, and the bastard jumps around so much and you can't block his roars. Next up is garuga which I'm not looking forward to.

Ahh the Yian Kut-Ku, it is the first Wyvern you need to take on in the game and is the easiest :)
Once you master how to dodge its attacks it helps with a lot of the bigger enemies too.
A handy hint is don't attack it head on. Always approach it from the side or diagonally so if it charges ahead quickly it will go right past you (if that makes sense).

I can't remember which area that quest is in, but any fishing spot can get goldenfish. They look golden, but there's another type that looks similar. If you leave / re-enter a zone then the fish selection changes.
The best way to catch them is use goldenfish bait. It involves combining snakebee larva and firefly. Only goldenfish go for that bait, so if nothing is biting then you don't have any goldenfish ;)
PS make sure you buy Combo books before doing any combining to increase your chance of success.

Though he hits harder than a Kut-Ku, the sheer opportunity to attack without retaliation makes Congalala an easier hunt. Just keep the paint on and the pain on and he'll be down in no time. As always, just don't stand in front of him, and in particular, not too close to the rear either. ;)
How's the arsenal going, Q? Still sticking with the long sword? What armor are you wearing?
My 'Hunt play has temporarily stalled, as I got Castlevania: DXC on Monday, but I did get a selected Monster Hunter soundtrack (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-8l-77-j-49-en-15-monster%2Bhunter-70-1uso.html) at the same time, which features tracks from across all MH games to date. Bone or Iron? Because there's a Bone Katana Wolf, Shark and Dragon, and there's an Iron Katana Grace and Gospel.
Sounds like you'll need either Piscine Fangs or Iron/Machalite ore to upgrade. That should give you the extra punch to take out Congalala. Use spirit combos whenever you can to really put the pain on.
In terms of armor, to start with I'd say go for a full set from any species of 'prey, and then use it to work towards a wyvern set. In terms of blademaster gear, I started with a Battle set and worked up to a Hermitaur set.
The two downloadable quests this week are:
* The Volcanic Trap!
- Slay 2 Basarios in the Volcano
*Challenge Quest 8
- Slay 2 Tigrex in the Great Arena (yeah, right)

Oh good, as long as they keep them online! I've been playing a lot more lately, working my way through the 2* quests (with surprising ease!) with full Battle Armor, and Snake Bite SnS.
The "with surprising ease" comes from the fact that I have yet to fight Yian Kut Ku, and he's still a few quests away, and I've seen that there's a STUPID PIG THING running round in the area he's in...great >_>
I've been reading up on a few strategies and tips though, so I'm pretty confident (which will all be THROWN AWAY when I face him)...
****UPDATE FUNTIMES****
After playing it for four hours this morning >_> going through a whole bunch of 2* missions, I beat Yian Kut Ku in my first try, and Congalala in my second try (damn running away and sleeping! Health recovery ftl!)
It was action packed, and very intense. Oh, yes, I did certainly use continues, but what's 500z in place of a "CLEAR!" symbol!
Good to see the matches added to the training missions! Yian Kut Ku dies in 3 mins from the gun match, so that's good money making! Congalala takes FOREVER to kill though :/

Yuan Kut Ku only runs when it's almost dead so it's not that much of an issue. Congala runs every chance it can get it seems!
After I killed him once he's quite easy. Have beaten him a few times now to get myself the Kut Ku Mail, Vambraces and Tasset.

I think you need kut-ku ears, which are a rare carve. You increase your chance by breaking his ears (hit the head a lot) or 10% chance to get one when you throw a sonic at him and he drops an item.
Funny trivia:
When playing MH1 online on PS2, the word kutku was censored for some reason. Maybe it is a swear word in some language. Anyway it was pretty funny you would be like hey lets go take on a ***** and have to end up putting in spaces or hyphens just to communicate properly.

In which case I'd better kill some more!
I was a bit worried about the land shark/piscine desert missions, but I knocked over one, surprisingly very easily.
Have now been given an urgent quest to slay a Khezu and have been having a couple of issues.
It's mainly it's combo of death which gets me. The problem is it has a launching charge attack similar to the Yuan Kut-Ku, then if that hits me, it'll do it's electrify attack straight away so it hits me before I can dodge.
The reason I'm so succeptible to this is the only place I'm able to damage the Khezu is it's head so I'm always withint a 180 degree arc of it's front whereas with the Kut Ku I was always hanging around it's sides slicing up the wings and body.
Also in the Quest description it says that the Khezu has no eyes so flash bombs won't work, but Dung Bombs will.
So I stocked up on dung bombs yet they appear to do nothing at all!
Is there elsewhere that the Khezu is weak?
Also last night Maxi and I multi-hunted the Daimyo Hermitaur.
Freaking epic! It's a pity humans have to sleep and PSPs need to charge otherwise we'd still be playing!

Regardless, I've fallen in love with this game. I only need a couple extra Earth Crystals and I'll have me the full set of Giaprey armor! Damn that set is sexy! :D
I'm having trouble with the Yuan Kut Ku now :(
I'm still refining my tactics, but using the dual swords, which are pretty weak, I get it down low and it runs away! And then it slowly wears me down :(
I tried it twice and died TWICE!!! ARGH!!!!
But still, I'm staying alive for longer, so it shouldn't be too long before I finally kill the bastard!

04-11-2007, 02:37 PM
YKK is a fairly tricky fight for that stage of the game. Unlike some of the other wyverns, it doesn't really telegraph its attacks, so as Ash said, try to attack it at an angle or from the sides.
With duals, I'd probably advise to stay in Berzerk mode as often as you can, but only use your Dragon Rage/Demon Dance attack when you have a clear opening to avoid getting cleaned up by tail swipes. For maximum survivability, upgrade your armor as much as you can afford and take a full compliment of potions and max potions.
Don't worry too much about wyverns running away, as they don't regain health unless you let them eat/drink or sleep. Keep them painted with paintballs (once when you first encounter, and I like to repaint every time I change zones), chase after them when they flee and just keep pressing the attack.
Sounds like a lot of peeps are running afoul (lol foul) of YKK, I take it noone's having any hassles with Khezu?

Later in the game you can readily gather fire herbs from the volcanic zone, but early on you can grow them by planting Red Seeds in your field rows at Pokke Farm, and I get the feeling you can buy them from 'Grannie' occasionally (the old travelling merchant that stands near the Guild Hall).

Well the khezu gear has good lightning resistance ;)
I can't think of any good ones for that stage of the game, I guess just try and not have negative resistance (crab armour, cephalos armour etc)
It's a bit easier if you have a good bow (eg kutku bow) since the only thing that can cause you trouble is his scream. But if you aren't right in front on him and he has to turn, it gives you some time to recover.

Heh, sorry Q, didn't check the previous page.
The basic gist is that Khezu leaves you more opportunities to attack than YKK, but will punish you harder if you don't avoid his attacks.
When he shoots lightning balls is probably the best time to attack, and I like to come in from the side just after he shoots, make a few chops at the neck and then roll away to avoid his 'electricity shield' attack.
As Ash said, the it's roar/scream is where you can really come unstuck, so get to know the rear up/bellow animation that precedes it and block, dive or at least try to get to the side/behind to avoid getting 'comboed'.
In terms of lightning resist armor, there's not much in that vein at that stage other than Hi-Metal, which uses up a lot of ore that you could otherwise be using for weapon upgrades.
Had an epic dragon-slaying session with Ash and Gilder tonight, and we downed Lao, Blue Los, Black Grav and Kusha. Managed to make a sweet set of duals called Flaming Pair (238 attack + 100 dragon element) out of the spoils, and I'm pretty stoked with 'em.

Armoursphere +, where art thou?
Armorsphere+ you get from mining, but they're pretty rare, and you won't start getting them until you start questing in the Volcano zone, or upgrade your mining facilities at Pokke Farm. I'm pretty sure you can combine an Armor Stone with a Hercudrome beetle to make Armorsphere+ too.
Yeah, and where do you get stuffs like Giadrome Claw+ and a Blangonga Fang+?? I need them to upgrade my weapon!
Most mats+ can only be aquired on G-ranked missions, ie HR4 and above, so you might as well forget about them for the time being and craft something else.
Also, what does Piggy do?? I have him, and I keep talking to him after missions so that he gets a heart, but then what exactly is the point? Does he give you something??
You can rub piggy for good luck, which means you have a small chance of getting better than average rewards on completing a mission. For best results, press the button 3 beats after the music stops (a exclamation point appears over your head) - piggy will jump in the air if you do it right. It only takes a few seconds, so you might as well RUB THE PIGGEH.
Also, the FAQ (http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=934395&topic=39121061) on the MHF2 message board at GameFAQs is pretty GG.

The Congalala.
Real men seem obsessed with phallic symbolism. Then again, I suppose my long, hard sniper rifle isn't really that subtle either.

Unfortunately, I'm not a real man, which is why I use the Dual Blades :P

I also took Khezu down last night, I wonder it Tuki also had success with Kut Ku, would have been a good night for all!
I kicked it's pasty arse from here to Tiananmen Square. It was the Congalala I was having troubles with. Unfortunately I didn't have as much luck beating him, but in my defense I was tired. >_>

Maybe we should take on the Daimyo Hermitaur and defeat him for the 5th time or so. More Hermitaur parts = win!

LOL at the noobs only using 1 paintball.
Guys it wears off after like 8 mins so you need to reapply it. Running away shouldn't be an issue at all.
PROTIP:
Most boss monsters only frequent a few zones and they retreat to a specific zone to sleep when injured. For most maps these zones overlap, so make a note of where the enemies run to and even then you can guess where they are heading if the paint wears off.
Gotta put the hunt in monster hunter guys. It isn't monster 'killer'. Learn your foes and the environments they inhabit.
I use heaps of paintballs! Does that mean I'm not a noob? :P
But, catching them is so much harder than killing them! So it should be monster killer!!
Anyway, if you can, play co-op. I swear, this is so much better when you play co-op!! So much fun, and talking to each other too!!

The problem is I'd use one paintball, then get caught up in the heat of battle and forget to throw another!
Most of the monsters are rather easy to track, but Khezu was hard as there were lots of areas he frequented, they are all quite far apart and he doesn't make it so obvious where he's going!
Fortunately that bastard is dead!

If you can sort out how to get Xlink Kai (http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/) going, I can't see why not.
Be warned it is pretty fiddly though, and does seem to have issues reconnecting if any hunters leave the guild hall - ie, you have to pick one weapon/armor set and stick with it for simplicity's sake. At least that was the case when I last tried it.
Downed Shen Gao Ren today... similar battle to Lao, but with a lot more footwork and getting stomped on by a giant crab involved. Should be interesting to have a crack at it in multiplayer.

Additional: Rajang is made of rape and super-saiyan. Think somewhere between a Congalala and a minotaur. With around 330 armor, the thing is two shotting me, so there's very little room for error.
On top of that, they throw you in with the thing in the arena, and if you don't finish if off within about 10 minutes, a second one jumps in. This is Wyverns of Land and Sky all over again, people.
Still, with another sesh this weekend, Team Awesome might crack HR 4, so it might be a case of coming back stronger later on.

What do you need to do to get to HR2?
I've got heaps of Guild Points and completed all the 1 and 2 star missions and most of the 3 stars!
Also I apologise to Khezu about calling it the king of spamming combo attacks.
Gypceros is the king of combo spam! However unlike Khezu, I took him out first turn!
Also is it just me or is the Daimyo Hermitaur the easiest of the large monsters ever? Maxi and I have defeated him on a number of occassions in the Guild Hall and in the Elder missions he was a push over as well.
Right now I'm hating Plesioth. Damn fishy bastard!

09-11-2007, 08:47 AM
Ok.
I've only been doing the Guild Quests multi-player with Maxi so we haven't even finished the 1 Star quests despite almost having finished the 3 Star Elder Quests!
Also I've found something a little cheap, but it's by far the best and safest way to slay the assorted Wyverns. I've used it against Cephadrome, YKK and Gycerpos.
Attack it from below. Get between it's legs and there's almost nothing it can do to you. The only attack that can hit you is the charge attack, and that's only if it gets itself on an angle so the legs clip you otherwise it ends up missing as you're between the legs.
Makes taking them down so ridiculously easy, even easier than the Daimyo Hermitaur!
Also it means you can get lots of attacks in on the legs so they fall over and struggle to walk! High-larious!
Ashmaran
09-11-2007, 12:40 PM
That's the way.
To unlock HR2 you only need to complete certain 3* quests. 1 and 2* are pretty pointless and just for completeness really.
I'm making a rathalos soul blade set. Got 3 parts done, gotta kill the blue bastard a few more times though >_>

Yea, the Cephadrome was funny, Quatters used a sonic bomb, and then we just beat the crap out of it for like a minute, and it was dead!
The Blangola though, we both died against... But I was using weapons which would have probably been crap against it, because they were ice based. Next time I'll use fire based ones!

Tried hammer and gunner. Man I shot 53 clust 2, 60 fire ammo, 50 pierce 2, 99 normal 2, 60 pellet 2, 9 crag 1, 6 ballista shots and he still didn't die. I used the dragonator while he was squatting outside the wall but it didn't seem to hit him properly.
Very lame indeed

Well we have been playing Monster Hunter of various varieties for a while now, since the original PS2 version. The good thing is that if you keep playing you develop skills to help survive in tough situations.
I'd call myself a veteran, if it weren't for my shameful humbling at the claws of the crab. I fail at hitting its weak spot for massive damage.
sidochrome
20-11-2007, 01:33 PM
R.E.: Rathalos
- Don't stand in front of him
- Two quick turns = Charge
- Two slow turns = fireball
- You get a clear shot at the tail when he spits fireballs
- If he flies up, stand in his shadow to avoid fireballs from above/poison claw attack
R.E.: Giant Enemy Crab
I managed to repel Shen using only Eternal Strife. My general tactic was to wail away on his feet/legs to bring him down and run out the clock.
It's best to basically follow one foot at a time. That way you can leap attack into a combo -> the foot then moves away from you -> leap attack into combo and avoid the 'quake' effects for the most part. Shen moves in patterns, ie forward, backwards, circles, so you might get stomped occasionally, but you'll be on the offensive more often than not.
Maybe bust out the Fire Dragonsword?
Quatters

Fire Dragon Sword + Quake resist armour and I failed again.
I think maybe it is my technique, this time I hit all the legs until they were red before I focused on one and it went red a second time and he fell over. Then I focused on it again and he fell down for a long time and all the legs went black again. I think he only fell down twice even though I was hitting his legs constantly.
I dunno, but it shouldn't be this hard / fiddly. C'mon seriously.
sidochrome
21-11-2007, 09:32 AM
He is the giant enemy crab, after all.
Hmm - maybe each leg will trigger a fall after it sustains a certain amount of damage. Also, I'm guessing that where the leg joins the carapace is a weakpoint, and is probably less armoured than the feet.
I'd say give it a burl with the Strife knife (take a LOT of whetstones) and see how you go.
I've come to the conclusion that the early G-ranked quests are easier/more rewarding than the training quests I'm up to, so I'm just doing those instead. Might make a blademaster Hermitaur U set to tide me over in the meantime.

Ok tonight we dine on crab soup!
The bastard actually died this time with 3 mins left and fort about 50%.
Equipment used:
- Anvil Hammer
- Quake Resist armour (2 parts indra, some chrome to give torso inc)
I read up on gamefaqs and checked out some youtube vids to get some ideas.
Strategy:
I gathered 4 extra ballista shot from box at the start of zone 1. Supposedly you can hit him while he's walking to zone 3 so I aimed the ballista at the closest tower (aim to the left) and fired all 10 shots. Not sure if this really helped, but according to people it does and that's where you should aim.
I focused on one leg at a time, hitting it until it became red twice. All these were triple triangle attacks if I had enough time for the whole combo. I tried to time it so that he would stumble when about to attack the fort.
Then I focused on the one leg until all the legs went black again and he fell down.
While he was down I rolled into the cavity between his shell and claws (the squishy body bit) and triple pounded. Supposedly thats his weak spot, and if you get in there you don't bounce off his shell.
Then I just focused on triple pounding his body area whenever he wasn't in stilts mode. This made him fall down to the ground about twice by itself.
I got lucky and got a lao shan horn in the rewards too! 1 more to go and I have my fire dragon sword.
You will have to excuse the hurried camera snaps.

Just get MHF2.
I read a few reviews of MHF1 and they were a little negative, whereas MHF2 is pretty much an upgrade as opposed to a whole new game (from what I've read.)
As for the game, it's great. It's a Monster Hunting Sim as opposed to a Monster Hack and Slash action game.
Has a really epic scale and provides a good challenge so you feel a real sense of accomplishment.

MHF1 is good, but the improvements in MHF2 basically make it obsolete. As much as I'm a MH fan, I can't see any reason for a newcomer to pick up MHF1, short of being obsessively completionist.

You can use velociprey or gypceros armour for your purposes. Oh and before when I needed Garuga ears I topped the bastard in about 9 minutes with the anvil hammer ;)
Made myself an onslaught hammer tonight, 1092 attack and blue sharpness! Need to bust up some stuff with it.
A question to the pros, do you use one type of weapon, or do you change depending on the situation? Because I only use dual blades, and looking through gamefaqs at the ways to make them, it's gonna be ages before I get any *really* good ones, and by the time I do get them, it doesn't seem they'll be so good anymore because the wyvern's will be so much stronger :P

Haha the whole point of the game is to master a wide variety of weapons. Different weapons are more effective at killing different monsters. Playing a different weapon class is like an entirely different game.

I had my first shot at multiplayer the other day (I convinced my friend to pick it up) and it was HELLA FUN! We started at 4 in the afternoon and before we knew it it was around 10. :/
Also, I really like my heavy bowgun, but I tried out the light one when multiplayering it up and I must say, I really like the extra speed that comes with the loss of weight. Too bad it's so piss weak or I might start seriously considering hanging up my 'ol heavy. I'm tossing up whether to pull out a bow (so I can keep my shooter armor on) or start with the gunlance. I'll run through a couple of Guild Quests and see how I feel after that. I'm leaning toward gunlance. :P

Have they said specifically 'online play' or just 'infrastructure mode'? Because if it was 'infrastructure mode', then that probably just means downloadable quests. Still a cool feature, but not online play. Got a link to the infos?
It looks like they've got all of the creatures that were previously from MH2 and Frontier, as well as Pantherex. Mercenary Felynes should make soloing more viable and more single-player/newbie friendly, but I wouldn't mind seeing some new weapon types (probably too much to ask until MH3).
The 'Asian' version will definitely be Japanese only, but if you're familiar with the menu setups and the inventory icons, then you can usually get by. I managed to suss out everything except decorations in the Jap version of MHF2.
I might spring for the Jap version, but I think I'll wait and see for now. I do fear the chances of a western release are pretty slim though.

I'm wagering it comes down to a bad translation. That's what one of the MH gurus from the GameFAQs board is saying (http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=943356&topic=39903041), anyway.
That said, the MH networking code is pretty robust (the online servers for MH on PS2 were in the UK, and the game was still entirely playable), so there's no reason why they couldn't potentially make it happen. Maybe they're just too tight to set up the servers for the matching service.

For the record, as an electricity-based monster, Khezu is strong against electricity-based attacks like your Sonic bow. If you're opting for a bow against it, you're better off going for a Kut-Ku bow or something similar with a fire element.

So I've been playing some more, haven't touched it in a while due to Disgaea, god damn it's a good game (this refers to both!)
I'm currently have finished the first 4 tiers of the Guild Hall quest and am having some issues defeating the Blagonga, despite according to my records, having polished off 5 previously.
So, I'm planning to tackle it with Maxi when he's free, prior to that, I'm trying to capture some Rathalos/ians to improve my fire based weapons and make it easier to own the bastard.
p.s. does this Blangonga give the + items? I need some for my Blango Decimator!
Another edit.
So has anyone else ordered the MHF2G accessories pack?
Why is the Rathalos so much harder than a Rathian?
Rathian's I can kill prety easily now, and am currently rocking an almost complete set of Rathian armour, just need the greaves, but Rathalos I haven't been able to solo one yet.
Only once when did Maxi and I team up did we take one out.
But the Rathian is now annoying me, I need some Rathian Spikes and Rathian Plate to make an improved weapon, yet despite killing 9 of them, I'm yet to see hide nor hair of spike or plate :(
Also I need alot of Rathalos parts for assorted weapons and also to make a Rathalos set too :D

Oh well.
Have also taken down Yian Garuga who'd proven to be a bug bear of mine.
However it looks like I'll need to take down many more as it's armour looks tasty.
Another thing, how the hell do you kill a Basarios?
Do I need to use a non-long sword to do it?
Every single attack I used bounced!
Maybe I should try my Black Katana Mk. III as it's got blue level sharpness. Is that enough?
sidochrome

Seeing as I've put in a shade over 170 hours, progressing in solo play is a fair old slog and doesn't really fit into my commuting chillaxation. I might have to dust it off to see where I'm up to, but in essence I'm waiting on the next installment.
You basically want to max out the Psychic Vision effect to Autotracker - it soon becomes the bomb in knowing where the wyverns are at all times, which is very handy across a range of mission types. Just slot your armour with gems until you get 20 points in it.
Because Bas' weak point is his belly, and the katana's main attacks hinge on the overhead chop, it's really not well suited to fighting Bas. Maybe try leading with the thrust into an upslash? Chances are you'll still be out of luck.
Most other weapons should get you through, but I find a Gunlance seems to work best. You can use the 'dragon's breath' attack and shelling to break his belly armour and then push the attack. Your impregnable defense gets you out of almost every situation, and you can just backhop if he starts emitting poison clouds.
IMO he's one of the easiest wyverns to down.

I await your "***** I HATE THE KUT-KU! How do you beat him?"
Maxi and I took on a Tigrex together, Guild 4 Star Urgent.
Ouch.
First round Maxi didn't realise just how powerful and damaging he could be. Maxi got hurt.
Second round, since I didn't die at all and didn't take much damage the first time, I was too cocky and lost a life.
Foolishly I also didn't bring any hot drinks so mine ran out and my stamina dropped at a far too rapid rate to properly take on a Tigrex and with another Maxi kill it was a second failed dual attempt.
Drats.
Will take him on again tomorrow, with hopefully more success. I mean I've killed a few before in Elder Quests, Guild Quests aren't that much harder. Are they...
After watching a couple of Greatsword videos on youtube, I decided to pick it up and try it out. So I go and do an easy mission where you have to collect Anteka Antlers. I finish it, and I thought, this is pretty cool.
So I say, how about a Khezu? So I do a Khezu mission, and I kill the thing! And I was happy.
I looked through the list of weapons I could make, and there was a Khezu weapon, but I needed a rubbery hide that only a Gypceros would give me, so I decide, "Why not?" and I take on a Gypceros and obtain the rubbery hide.
I now have two Greatswords, and hopefully the Khezu one will be of great use against this damned Tigrex me and Quatters shall take on tonight!!

IMO manoeuvrability is key in fighting Tigrex, so I'd go for something like a longsword (ideally a Eager Cleaver/Devil Slicer), hammer, hunting horn or maybe a SnS.
Your best bet is to go for the back legs, and during certain attacks that leave him open, the face. Take at least one paralysis trap with you - it's good for 'defusing' him during rage mode - and maybe some flash bombs too.
I've been meaning to get back into the hunt... I'll have to fire it up on the train home tonight and work out where I'm up to.

I used Devil Slicer and had full Rathalos Soul Armour. It was gemmed up so I had Attack Up Medium, Reckless Abandon +1 and High Grade Earplugs. But knowing what I know now, it's probably a better idea to drop the earplug gems and try to get Attack Up Large instead, or maybe one of the sharpening related skills instead.
Anyways, I had the Felyne Attack Up Large skill from the kitchen too so that helped!
While I may not have gotten a kill, I did get a repel which alone, isn't supposed to be easy. Now, if I can get Maxi and my other bros shit together, we should be able to get a kill!
As far as elder quests are concerned I've done everything.
However no Shen Gaoren :(
I think I need to have killed two of every monster, so I'm waiting for the Kirin quest to pop up as it's the only monster I haven't killed twice.

It's great fun!
So am still waiting for the Kirin Quest to turn up again so I can get Shen Gaoren.
In the meantime I'm hunting Teostras, Lunastras and Lao Shan Lung to get materials to upgrade my Fire Dragonsword to a Red Dragonsword and also to get the Supremacy Blade.
Fortunately, with my newfound dragon element weapon, it's not too hard. Pity about the lack of sharpness though :(

Yeah, there's no collecting. Though you can capture monsters, but that involves bruatally hitting them with weapons before getting them caught in a trap!

The easiest way to describe it is it's like a MMORPG but in real time and with more of a focus on I suppose the realities of hunting monsters, as in one needs to eat to keep up their stamina, your weapons blunt with extended use and needs to be re-sharpened and you cook up meat to eat. Likewise you can lay traps and lure monsters into them through a variety of means.
You can also fish, mine for materials, catch bugs and a whole bunch of other stuff in and outside of the quests.
The hook is the constant drive to upgrade your equipment I think. At first the game is a bit slow mechanics wise but it gets a whole lot better once you push past the introductory stages and start to get new armor and weapons.

Indeed it is!
Yes it ous out in Australia, but everywhere I've seen it for $79.95, so buy it from Play Asia instead. $48.50 + $3.40 shipping. And that's AUD.
MHF2 (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-296d-71-b9-49-en-15-monster+hunter+freedom+2-84-j-70-23i6-43-99.html)
As a rough description it's a monster hunting simulator.
So it's sort of like an action game, but with more thought behind it.
Weapons can become blunt and need to be sharpened, your stamina needs to be maintained. If you're somewhere too cold you need to keep yourself warm with either your armour or hot food/drinks or your stamina decreases quicker.
Plus there's alot of variety. It's mission based and most missions involve hunting a particular monster. Either killing, or capturing it with a trap.
You then get parts from monsters to create and improve armour and weapons.
There's 8 weapon types, each different so you can find a style you like, and then each has many, many different ones there.
The main things are the constantly upgrading your equipment and the challenge.
It is a very hard game compared to most, but it does mean you feel a sense of accomplishment when you take down a particularily tough enemy!
So it's like WoW mets Harvest Moon... >_>

Seeing as Maxi has no taste, kinda...
...it's similar to Phantasy Star Online in that it has a few set areas, and quests which take place in them, and it's easier with more people...
...it's different in that it's extremely difficult, has a huge learning curve, Jubei doesn't actually like it, and it really is the closest thing to a monster hunting simulator.
Quatters
12-06-2008, 05:52 PM

Monster Hunter - Official Hunting Club Polo Shirt: Black
Monster Hunter - Official Hunting Club Polo Shirt: Brown
Monster Hunter - Official Hunting Club T-Shirt: Grey
Monster Hunter Multi Bag
Monster Hunter Towel Muffler (I have no idea what this could possibly be)
How many will I end up buying?
In other news, have unlocked the Urgent Guild Shen Gaoren, once dead, I'm HR4 and am G Rank!
There aren't too many of the 5* Guild QUests left, just some of the Elder Dragons. Though I've killed Kusha and one of the Chameleos.

It just throws so much more at you, the attack power of enemies is now huge, infact it's weird going back to lower rank Guild and Elder quests and finding I don't need to heal after getting hit twice.
However, I'm loving the new armour sets!

I have wireless Internet already, what's Xlink and why do I need it to play online?
Quatters
14-07-2008, 10:53 AM
YES!
Xlink is a program that tricks the PSP into thinking you're playing locally rather than online.
Some routers work on it, but it's generally considered best to use something like the Datel WiFi Max.

I went to Gametraders to trade in some games for a voucher, and I noticed it was $10 off. The voucher came to $35, so I decided to pay the extra $35 and get it before someone else bought it.

Infrastructure is supported by all versions, but translates to downloadable quests/content, not online play.
The only way you get online play is with a tunnelling program.

Infrastructure is used to DL new quests and some other stuff.
You can only play multi-player locally.

You need something like a Datel WiFi Max or some supported routers.

There's a hell of a lot of materials required to make new armour and weapons! Is it better to make new ones or improve the ones you have? Is it better to prioritise weapon upgrades over armour upgrades, or vice versa?
Also, is it necessary to occassionally repeat the easiest quests just to gather stuff, or just keep doing quests, gather as much as you can and eventually you'll have everything you need?
And what the hell are trap tools for? Do I need to combine them with something to make a real trap?
I've only done the first two quests and I already feel like I'm in over my head... :|
I gave this a whirl one lunch break (only played an asian copy of MHP before now). First impressions are that it is so much better in english but the pain in the arse load times are still there despite running it from a memory card. Deciding whether to bother investing the time in this or just wait it out til PSU hits.

It depends on the situation.
Since you need many more materials to make a full armour set, upgrade the weapons first.
Also it's not too necessary to repeat quests unless it's for something specific.
Also with armour, make a full matching set. It will give you some skills which is what you normally choose armour based on.
I'd say try to make a full Battle Set, until you can beat the Kut Ku and make a Kut Ku set!
With weapons, choose your favourite, you will then be making a few different ones as they all do different elemental damage and thus have advantages/disadvantages.
Reign of the Rathalos has all the weapon paths.

Here's the Hunting Horn paths!
http://www.reign-of-the-rathalos.com/mhfcontent/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/MHF2-HuntingHorn.PNG
Trap Tool + Genprey Fang = Shock Trap
Trap Tool + Net = Pitfall Trap.
Save them for big monsters, you place them on the ground, monster runs over and is either paralyzed temporarily or falls in a net/hole!
Best thing to do is place two Large Barrell Bomb +s and then a Small Barrell Bomb + to do massive damage!
Make sure you have time to set it up as it takes a while!
