Thought I'd resurrect my one thread that I thought ever had potential - a variation on the traditional music thread where you tell all the Retroactive! kiddies what olden title you're currently devoting a sickening amount of time to... ill-timed idea given that I'm solely playing F-Zero GX :P

Ecco the Dolphin on Mega CD. I found a copy for 5 bucks the other day, I don't actually have a Mega CD anymore but, um, there are other ways. The music rocks hard; it's what I'd hoped the Dreamcast version would be in that regard. And the game is a total classic, definitely one of the best of the 16 bit era.

question, does N64 count as retro?

Absolutely. In this forum we discuss anything up to and including the Dreamcast.

As for what I'm playing at the moment:

Perfect Dark (N64) - trying to finish it all on Perfect Agent (currently stuck on Crash Site - Confrontation).
Street Fighter Alpha 3 (PSX) - slowly making my way through the World Tour mode.
Rampart (SMS) - I've been addicted for ages now. I'm scared...but....must......build....more castles!

I dont know why. Or how. But. Street Fighter is like the hardest game on console ive
ever played. Even FFXII and X part two were easy compared to street fighter. maybe its cause i put it on difficulty level 8? either way i unlocked all the gold and am stuck on ragnarok. its so addictive.

C'mon, Stormin, fill us in!

As for myself, I've finally secured a copy of Card Fighters for the NGPC! I figured since I spent close to two hundred hours playing an emulated copy, I might as well track one down ;). Only problem is starting from the begining again - ten hours in and I'm yet to find one damn copy of the Akuma card, which my previous fave deck hinged upon. On the positive side of things, starting with a predominantly Capcom deck (the ROM was of the SNK version) has made me appreciate lots of other cards, rather than sticking with a select few.

I'll exptrapolate on this in my livejournal once I've finished both games, but it has to do with the fact that the game's ambition far outweighs what it actually is.

I mean... you can see what Yu Suzuki wanted to do. You can tell that even the power of the Dreamcast (which was obviously designed almost purely for Shenmue) limited the game somewhat.

Hell, not even any current generation console could bring justice to the ambition the game has.

That's the frustrating bit. The game is brilliant, but falls short only because it was created before its time.

C'mon, the forklift sections were rad! Certainly better than those painful extended QTEs in the sequel *shudders* *screams at that fat beardy prick that always yells at you for dropping the crates... again*

I'll exptrapolate on this in my livejournal once I've finished both games, but it has to do with the fact that the game's ambition far outweighs what it actually is.

That was far more apparent in the sequel where the world was even bigger, which proved just how little interactivity you had with it :P That said, I really think I would've appreciated it more if I'd played it on the DC itself, rather than on the haxxbox a couple of years later.

Maniac Mansion - NES

Hell yeah! As much as I loved this (it was my first graphic adventure –aww :D), I've never bothered to track down the original PC version. I got my hands on a copy for the NES a while back, but I could only get it (and many other NES games, for that matter) to load two out of every five times. It became too much of a hassle and I haven't gone back to it.

I think Shenmue deserves every bit of praise I can give it. I will grant that the game Yu Suzuki envisioned may not have been realised to it's full extent.

That said, there is not one second in Shenmue where I am not impressed with it. It blends tradtional video game elements (exploration, action, puzzle solving) with cinematographical elements (story progression, drama, camera-work) into one of the most detailed and involving video games of our time. It took me just over a year to finish it - and I regret getting to the end, as it means I had to say goodbye to a lot of characters and places I'd grown to love. The first time you step into Sakuragaoka you're filled with a sense of wonderment at this fascinating and realistic world. Leaving it was hard to do.

However, I look positively at (finally) making a start on Shenmue II with the opportunities of meeting new people, having new adventures and seeing new places. No other game world has felt as real or emotionally tangible as Shenmue's and it disappoints me that we're probably never going to get a Shenmue III. :-(

Some may say that Shigeru Miyamoto is the most innovative and influential video game designer of our time - but I think what Yu Suzuki achieved with Shenmue far exceeds anything Miyamoto's ever done.

mantis*ant

It didn't take me anywhere near as long to finish Shenmue, but I'll never forget the one week in August that I played it constantly, even forsaking seeing my older sister on her birthday just to try and wrap it all up :D. I played it for days on end - I don't think I've ever been so engrossed by any game. Ever.

The highlight for me was definitely the months after I finished it where I continued to uncover more and more stuff, particularly through stalking all the damn characters in the game and just noting what time of the day they went where, etc. Space Harrier had a fair bit to do with it's replay value, too, and it never felt the same in the Xbox version of SII, which further compounded my frustration with the game.

Geez, I just re-read that and it all makes me sound pretty damn sad - lucky I didn't mention my Schoolgirl Panty Trick fixation >_>

Exactly.

What is there is amazing. It's only when you start thinking about what's beyond those boundaries that you realise the limitations. It's so frustrating.

On the other hand, all masterpieces have flaws. Shenmue is, without question, a masterpiece.

...it disappoints me that we're probably never going to get a Shenmue III. :-(

This is why, when I finish Shenmue II in another few months, I will cry.

Some may say that Shigeru Miyamoto is the most innovative and influential video game designer of our time - but I think what Yu Suzuki achieved with Shenmue far exceeds anything Miyamoto's ever done.

I think that it's unfair to make these comparisons. Miyamoto clearly influences Shenmue, and I get the same feelings in it as I did with, say, Ocarina of Time (Miyamoto's last great game, and another gaming masterpiece).

On the other hand, what Shenmue is trying to do is different. It's about the experience, the world, the place. The story is intended to be secondary to that. You aren't supposed to go through the story as fast as possible. You're supposed to let it come naturally.

I've been pacing myself, this time around. I've found that if I limit myself to one or two story events per day, I get more time to explore and engross myself in ***uoka. I spend money, I do the cat thing (although I think I screwed this bit up, and I wish to start again). I play Space Harrier like a demon. I collect the egg toys. I never did that much the first time through.

One brilliant thing I've noticed about Shenmue is that no two players are going to get the exact same game. There'll be events you'll miss that other people will trigger.

For example, I completely missed all the flashbacks at the start of the game. I just happened to walk into them this time around. I didn't even know they were there.

I'm writing way too much (we should start a thread) on this topic, now.

At the moment I'm on the 4th level of Durlag's Tower in Tales Of The Sword Coast (first time I've played any Tales Of The Sword Coast content) and damnit, it's tougher than anything I've played through in the entire rest of the series.

It's proper single player game with NPCs for the rest of my party. I'm playing a Paladin whose stats are incredibly freaky (with some altered by equipment):

Str 18/00
Dex 19
Con 17
Int 9
Wis 17
Cha 22

My party is composed of Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir. I've played up to chapter six, and I've got only the Werewolf Isles left on Tales Of The Sword Coast, and already I've hit the experience cap.

Evil party members are waaaay too much hassle.

I was aiming, however, for an alternative party for Baldur's Gate II than the one I usually have. I have this party now - Minsc, Jaheira (can't go post those two, ever), Valygar, Anomen and Jan Jansen. This time I'm gonna play the Jaheira romance (I usually go for the Aerie romance). I also usually have Keldorn, Yoshimo and Aerie instead of Valygar, Anomen and Jan Jansen, but since I'm a Paladin, I don't need Keldorn for the Holy Avenger.

I've been away from that save for months so I'm looking to start again, maybe going the vanilla fighter route if I can buff up Imoen's thieving well from the get-go - I blame 16-bit RPGs, I just can't walk into a digital house without sacking it :D.

As of the now I've beaten my rival in Card Fighters and've only got thirty cards to complete my collection. The trade factor means that's going to take a long while, and I'ma currently having my arse handed to me by Mask a frightening amount.

Garou has probably the most detailed and smoothest animation I've ever seen in a 2D fighter. Not even GGX2 or SvC Chaos can match it.

Had to bring this thread back to life to sing my appreciation for the one... the only...

Mr. Driller for Dreamcast! :D

http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/vi/virgin-mr-driller-dc.gif

Having never played a Mr. Driller game before, I picked this one up for $10 off eBay (gwahaha) and gave it a whirl. It is FANTASTIC. I've been playing it for three days straight. I'm so addicted to it, I want to take my DC into to Tribal's work when I visit him tonight. :p I guess I'm just going to have to buy the DS version instead.

I believe this is a direct port of the arcade game that was around at the time. If you ever get a chance to play it either at the arcade or on the DC, don't do it, because you'll get as addicted as me, and especially if you play the arcade version, you will be begging for change on the side of the road for one more hit.

Being a Dreamcast owner is so great right about now.

ebay link (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8236851395&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1)

They polish up exceptionally well with some Armor All liquid Wax, and are really pretty decent guns; very accurate and comfortable. Lethal Enforcers 2 isnt bad either, but the bosses take waay too long to kill =/

Anyone got a Lethal Enforcers 1 up for trade/sale?

Well I heard a lot about it recently and found it it was an action RPG so I thought I'd download the rom of Secret of Mana and play it. Seems pretty good so far but I've only just started, up to the Water Palace.

What other games are there in the Mana series?

Ezri
23-12-2005, 12:47 PM
There's Seiken Densetsu 3 (aka Secret of Mana 2) which is a Japanese exclusive. You'd definitely need a translation guide for that.

There's also Secret of Evermore which is an offshoot of the series. Plus there's Sword of Mana, but I don't know how that fits into the mix. :-?

mantis*ant
23-12-2005, 05:33 PM
Seiken Densetsu (Mystic Quest in Europe; Final Fantasy Adventure in the US) was released for the original Game Boy and was an action/adventure RPG (think Zelda with less puzzles) as opposed to Square's usual turns-based efforts. It was lightweight, though fairly enjoyable.

Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) (SNES) was the best in the series. It expanded on the original with lush graphics, an amazing soundtrack and a brilliant, tactical combat system.

Secret of Evermore (SNES) was created by Square USA and felt a lot like a Mana expansion pack because it "borrowed" heavily from that game's template - ring menus, charge-based combat. Whilst it didn't include Mana's beloved multi-player mode, it increased the amount and complexity of puzzles and it's magic system was completely unique - the hero used his faithful doggy to sniff out alchemic ingredients. And the soundtrack was composed by Jeremy Soule ^_^

Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES) was one of the few Japanese RPGs to bother with alternate classes that give your character a sense of individuality, but the lack of collision detection in battles made combat a chore.

Sword of Mana for the GBA was a fairly faithful/familiar edition of the series, but the combat now lacked Mana's strategy and even SD3's pace.

Legend of Mana for the PSX sits in between the last two on the list, but I haven't played it and given the spazzy nature of the fighting systems in them, I'm not all that eager to track it down (NTSC release only). It does look amazingly pretty, though.

I've never really thought about the 'one round' thing. But then again I never really thought of it as a boxing simulation. You don't see many mad clown's, old Chinese men with walking canes or Japanese 'dude looks like a lady' long haired guys taking to the ring, do you? :)

Ehhh, I liked it. I guess it was pretty easy though. Once I played through it once it was very easy to come back to at a later date and clock in one (relatively short) sitting.

I've never really thought about the 'one round' thing. But then again I never really thought of it as a boxing simulation. You don't see many mad clown's, old Chinese men with walking canes or Japanese 'dude looks like a lady' long haired guys taking to the ring, do you? :)

No, but Punch Out still has three rounds per fight which kinda makes it more exciting IMO. :p

I'm finding it rather odd, that I started re-buying old Atari ST/e games at around, average, $10 Australian for quite rare titles. Then, almost a month later everything that's on Ebay has shot up to over $40 for a floppy disc based game that probably doesn't even load anymore. Is it my fault that sellers see fit to increase prices? Oily hides.

Playing a remade version of Lemmings (http://www.elizium.nu/scripts/lemmings/).

Still a great game.

At least one level in Taxing was remade improperly so it can't be finished but apart from that it is great.

I heard that SPO was crap because each fight only had one round. What do you think?

So, yeah, basically they don't have that 'brilliant' blow-job animation between rounds. lol.

Playing a remade version of Lemmings (http://www.elizium.nu/scripts/lemmings/).

Still a great game.I used to love playing Lemmings on the PC when I took a break at work.

My co-worker and I kept getting eaten by this bird that flew down and bit our sole lemming's head off. We bought a guide book to help us finish the level and it helpfully told us to "avoid the Psycho Buzzard".

We were both like, no shit, that's what why are trying to do.

Every time after that when somebody said something obvious we would call them a Psycho Buzzard.

I've been playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors. How do you get past lvl 20? Do you have to find all three skull keys (at least I think they're skulls...) in the levels leading up to it?

Been cranking out Morrowind on PC. Vanilla gameplay (with both expansions and all official plugins), but a pretty extensive list of visual mods:

Morrowind Graphics Extender (infinite view distance, HDR lighting, any monitor resolution and many, many more tweaks and additions)
Oblivion style grass
High res textures (replaces virtually all the land/building textures in the game, indoor and out)
Better Heads
Better Bodies
Better Clothes
Better Beasts
Better Bottles
Book Jackets
Book Rotate
New paper textures
Real Signposts
Indoor weather (If it's raining outdoors, you can hear it indoors)
Morrowind Abodes (so I've got places to store my stuff)
Morrowind Comes Alive (adds random NPCs to towns, shops etc)
At Home Alchemy - lets you use your alchemy sets without having them in your inventory, so you're not constantly picking them up/putting them down.

I've also got the latest Morrowind Patch Project patch which fixes a lot of things the Bethesda patches didn't.
It all runs brilliantly on my PC, though there seems to be something wrong with Skeletons as the game becomes unplayably slow whenever there's more than one on the screen.

Currently a Level 7 Redguard, custom class. Working my way through the main quest.

Golden Axe. I've never really gotten into a pre-Final Fight beat 'em up before, so it is interesting to play something that is more about advanced (in comparison) movement rather than backing yourself into a corner and mashing.

And Shinobi 3. I came pretty close to beating this but I'm pretty rusty.

Not all of them. My freinds kid is 8 and he likes to play videogames but it seems every game is too hard for him. he just gives up says its too hard and always wants me to pass it for him. You're son must be a bright one if he can manage to gain profit in Theme Hospital and Transport Tycoon!

Anyway the retro titles I am playing now is ... Vortex Blaster for SC-3000. It's a very good shooter and it was programmed by an Aussie too. My highest score so far is 59,460

Giving Axelay a couple of credits each day. Is quite decent but has problems normal for console games (Too easy due to too many extends and you need to get hit four damn times to lose a life - crashing into an object results in instant death, though). The horizontal stages are much better than the vertical ones, which have ugly and confusing graphics which also limit the area of the playing field, if only slightly.

My copy of Final Fight 2 just arrived... it's pretty boring. Because of the SNES' lack of power, there can only be three enemy sprites on screen at once (there can be like, 7 in the original Final Fight). As I progressed the levels did not get harder, and I'm sure if I just learned the boss patterns then this would be really easy to beat.

'Joust' Got the bug to dig out this ole favorite. Nothing like flapping some wings and collecting eggs. Plays really well in 2 player mode, even after all of these years.

I know its not the same as playing the original, but i've also been enjoying the xBox Live version of 'Track and Feild'. Loved the oringal game with its button mashing 100m, and the xBox Live version lets you play online with a mate (albeit laggy).

Been thinking about finally finsihing FFVII. I think the clock was at 60 hours leading into the final battle, but i never finished it! Been meaning to get back to it but time got away from me and its been in the cupboard (along with my original PS1) collecting dust year after year. Gotta drag that baby out sometime soon.

Haven't had much time for gaming lately, (and what time I do have has mostly been with SFIV) but I just had to try out a couple of games I got in the mail yesterday. Streets of Rage 3; this game fixes SoR2's problem of Axel's grand upper being way too good (now it has less priority and more recovery) which alone should make this game superior. More fast paced and harder, which is a plus. The roll mechanic is interesting but I will have to play more to understand how big an impact it has on the game (for example, it is easier to roll away from projectiles than to go through them with an invincible move) but I'm confident that I will find the more complex AI patterns justify its existence.

Anyone play Fighter's Destiny on N64? Proabably the only decent fighting game on the platform. I've never played a game like it. You have a short health bar and 7 stars on screen. To win, you need to fill the stars up by executing different moves.

Ring out: 1 star. You can grab onto the edge of the elevated platform and haul yourself up, or pull your opponent off by the leg! :D

Knockdown: 3 stars. Some special "shadow" moves can cause an instant knockdown. Otherwise you need to deplete your opponents health and knock them down while thyw are dizzy.

Special: 4 stars. Hit them while dizzy with your special finisher. Ow.

Throwdown: 2 stars. Sucessfully land a throw. Throws can be escaped and reversed!

Judge's Decision: 1 point. Judges score your performance if time runs out.

Counter: 3 points. Execute a counter move while your opponent is attacking you!

The controls consist of four buttons. High, Low, Block and Dodge (its actually called something else but it escapes me). While holding Dodge, you can move in 8 directions, and you will automatically dodge high and low attacks, provided you are not attacking yourself at the time. Medium attacks will hit you, and if you are thrown there is NO escape! There are not a massive amoungt of moves, but its very slow paced and technical.

In short, I'm loving the uniqueness of it! Anyone else play it back when it came out, or recentl?
