Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit (PSX) - complete, $10

Good price, the most recent I've seen it for is $15-$20 = $Dodgy

Meanwhile, I finally snapped up a copy of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 on PS2 (That's almost retro)

Castlevania Double Pack, I think only cost me 20 or something
Mega Man Network Transmissions for Cube
Great Greed for Game Boy (Saw this recommended in a Neo Gaf thread on Game Boy games, had never heard of it so thought I should track it down, looked quite good, not played yet though)
Pokemon Tetris for Pokemon Mini (Retro Gamer has kept going on about this and even called it the 2nd best version of Tetris ever, while I debate that it is lots of fun and found it really cheap on ebay by luck, soo happy to finally get it, lots of fun.http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v300/flamecondor/?action=view&current=RecentlootRetroFeb132010.jpg

Yeah had been meaning to track it down for quite a while, loved Dawn of Sorrows on DS so have been really keen to play the first part of the storyline.

Not quite a purchase yet but I just put a bid on this (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140517628118&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT#ht_500wt_1156)

I am hoping because there isn't 5 of everything or any games that it keeps the price down. I've placed a maximum bid of $150. I'll be at Soundwave when it finishes so hopefully it doesn't go over.

My plan is to keep one or two of them, track down the missing power supplies and RF cable and sell the rest.

EDIT: Ended up winning the lot for $150

Picked up my eBay win of 5 NES console lot which contained.

5 NES consoles
6 Contollers
5 RF cables
1 Power Supply

When I got there the guy chucked in some other stuff that he had lying around that he didn't want which included

3 Playstations (with 3 power cables and 1 RF cable)
One original PS controller and one Dual Shock 2 controller
Plus a few games
Arcade Party Pak
Gran Turismo (someone has decided to get a black pen and draw over the logo on the disc)

Tested the NES console and all will power on and 3 will read games. The 2 that read games might just need a good clean or a replacement of the pins. Also 1 controller doesn't work properly when it comes to its D pad. I haven't tested the Play Stations yet.

Not bad though for $150

Plus I stopped off at Gametraders and picked up Smash TV on the NES.

Yeah I've played multiple versions, so I know what the NES one looks like. Actually I have that version on my DS come to think of it.

I would like to avoid looking at the ugliness of the NES version (it plays alright). I guess they did the best they could at the time, but the arcade version is the only one for me, not so much for the graphics and delicious over the top gore, which I like a lot - but for the twinstick / Robotron controls, that sadly fail on home conversions and make the game almost unplayable imo.

Yeah, it folds in half. 1m by 1m package.

I did leave out the postage fees though.

The item itself was 5000 yen.
But the guy I had to go through to get the item charged me 2000 yen as service fee. He also charged me Paypal fee, Bank transfer fee, income tax, handling fee, domestic shipping and finally the EMS postage.

It cost me a bit over 20000 yen.

But I have a good relationship with the guy so I don't mind.

Awesome. That'll be vintage now. Sometimes I wish I worked at a games store. I'd try and get all the cardboard ads.

I used to have a bunch of em. Me and my mate used to hang around this independant game store back i aroun 1997-99, so we talked to the owners/employees a fair bit, and when they brought out a gold membership thing (free to join) for people who had spent over $500 in the store, we got to take out pick of posters and cardboard oversize characters etc when they got rid of them.

They kept some of the great ones, which remain in that store today. Except now if you want posters (that otherwise would end up in the skip), they charge for em, and they are not cheap.

But I can't complain, I got a shitload of great free stuff thanks to the generosity of the owner, but I still wish I had kept my P. J. Berri Parappa the Rapper poster though, that's one I wont see again. Probably got crumpled in a closet somewhere.

Had a really cool Duke Nukem poster back then too, it was MASSIVE.

I could not find a pic of the actual poster (which may or may not have been solid cardboard, not sure, but it was very big), but here is the art as used in the ad for the same games release (PS1/Saturn/64).

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/Jonny9999/Duke-Nukem-64-Total-Meltdown-1.jpg

The poster I had was tall, not wide, so would have had the edges cropped compared to this two page comic-book ad, but the poster had more bullets below his feet and such, so either way you don't see the whole pic.

Seeing this page http://www.retrogamingaus.com/page/2 reminded me that I actually have THAT Duke Nukem figure in a box somewehere, it's a bit ugly though.

Picked up Resident Evil (Saturn) and RE3 (PS1) to replace my banged up copies. Someone's child drew glasses in blue pen over the character on the RE Saturn's manual's cover, had to rectify that.

$40 each. My inexperience at eBay meant I couldn't predict the seller would lump both games into a linked payment. I'd already paid for RE1 before they did that. They quickly refunded my cash and I paid for the bundle in the end. Not sure if the money ever made it back into my account. If that's what it costs not to have glasses and a moustache drawn onto the instruction book then so be it.

I'm still pissed when the local video shop sold RE #1 on Saturn (back before I had a PS) for $5 to some stupid kid I never met. They said they would hold it for me, but they did not.

Well, at least I grabbed panzer dragoon 1 and 2, and puzzle bobble 2 for $5 each, of course this was back around 1997, when Saturn games - even second hand ones - generally sold for $50 or so.

So I was REALLY pissed when let that Resi Evil go.

Ironically (or not) picked up RE#1 for PS1 for $5 in around 2001 in a Cashies shop in Fremantle.

Because I want to see Raziel do his break dance routine when the games spazzes out on the water level and you have to keep resetting the game?

Because I want to see a beautiful game on inferior cables and technology?

No, Because I can play it on my PS2 right away.

I'd like (and may get) the DL version of Soul Reaver along with SOTN and Vagrant Story and Rez, but until I can afford home internet, and spare $ for DLC games etc I will make do with the actual games, even though they look a bit shit on the HD TV.

I live in a rural-ish area, high population, but shit internet that you pay an arm leg and and a nose for. THANKS TELSTRA FOR NOT UPDATING THE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE IN MY AREA and then screwing us with internet prices.

I guess if I stopped buying games altogether then I could easily afford the monthly internet gouge, but why would I choose to do that?

I meant DC as in Dreamcast champ.

Too much clutter!

Oh, easy, it's missing one button over the PS version and I pretty much hate the DC (controller) for action games. It's fine for other games, and ones developed specifically for it, but annoying as hell on some other games.

It is rather pretty on the DC though. I may just get a burned version of it for DC sometime just to take another look at it.

I guess if I had a controller converter thing to play a PS controller on the DC, I may have got that version, but I prefer to have no more than four machines set up at one time, and I still play my PS2 frequently, and plan to get yet another one (4th or 5th?) with a mod so I can also play my various import NTSC PS1 games that will not work on my current PS2 machine. (Such as Un Jammer Lammy, Silouette Mirage etc).

Also, the DC VMU makes that damn beeping sound when you turn it on, and I'll be damned if I'm buying a 2 cent battery for the VMU to stop that infernal sound.

After a couple of years of eyeing ebay now and again, either unable to locate or getting grouchy at a price outside my budget, finally I've gotten my hands on Klonoa: Door to Phantomile.

For some reason in the last month the amount of listings for this PS1 game went up with at least a dozen sellers pushing the thing; great to see after only spotting Klonoa Beach Volley ball all this time. Picked it up for $65.

Also, does PS2 count as retro yet? I snatched Silent Hill 4: The Room. Contrary to the name there's quite a few rooms so I'm not sure which one it's referencing in particular.

Being a big Klonoa fan (with the PS1/2 and GBA games) I've passed up Klonoa Beach Volleyball for even $15. Why the heck did you buy this?

Eh? I bought Door to Phantomile, not Beach Volleyball.

Oh, I'm very tired I read that wrong.

Which game did you get - the PS1 Door To Phantomile or the Wii-make on the uh... Wii?

I've played Door to Phantomile dozens of times. The sequel just didn't do it for me.

The two GBA games are both excellent, and I'm currently still trying to buy the Wii version, but the bastards on ebay uk are not shipping international and all the major stores I've checked don't restock it.

PS1 Door to Phantomile. I played the tits off of the demo plus a couple of misc levels a very long time ago and never had the opportunity to get my hands on it properly. It got all nostalgic when the stonemason leaped off his tower and made that "SHWOP" sound.

For some reason I've dodged grabbing the sequel. Is it worth a play? Or is it like Ape Escape 2 to Ape Escape?

Klonoa 2 on PS2 is a brilliant game, I just personally like the first game more overall for it's levels.

You can grab K2 off ebay (UK) these days for next to nothing

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?rt=nc&Platform=Sony%2520PlayStation%25202&_nkw=klonoa%202&_dmpt=UK_PC_Video_Games_Video_Games_JS&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m1539

and it is still very much worth playing, I don't think it has dated at all, seeing as the platform mechanics are very solid, and the graphics are still rather pretty today, because they use simple cartoon designs.

Klonoa 2 is a big visual leap above the previous game too, with proper 3D characters and backgrounds, but still linear 2D gameplay (as it should be), and I quite like the music if I do say so.

While I'm here, have you played Ape Escape 3? I think it's the best in the series, the new powers they add in really give far more variety and fun to the series than previous entries. It's a shame they killed this IP though, I would love a new Ape Escape game (not one of the gimmicky mini-game compilations either, they don't count).

Of course, Ape Escape 3 is fantastic! It definitely made amends for that rubbish AE2. The only thing I miss is Specter's eevil voice.

However my heart remains with the first AE. Even with AE3's spiced up gameplay I prefer AE1's level design and general feel. Specter's plans seemed way more nefarious rewriting history by travelling through time, where as now he's just taking over TV stations and stuff. It feels like AE lost its Western personality after the first game.

The only problem I have with Ape Escape now days is it's too easy. I could see some hints at difficulty in AE3 with monkeys dodging a perfect catch which could work well with a difficulty slider.

Just purchased Klonoa 2 btw. Cheers!

Yep, A3 was my favourite because the levels were bigger and a bit more interesting etc, but if they ever did another proper game in the series, they need to return to the core concepts and gameplay of the first game, they could add other stuff to it of course and give it some replay value, but even a remake of sorts of the first game would be welcome. Man, you'll enjoy that K2, just don't try and climb it all in one day or you'll be out of breath.

I keep meaning to replay Klonoa 2, it's by the most beautiful game in the series, and the character designs look gorgeous, and it's a bit more challenging (in a good way) than other entries in the series.

So have you played the two GBA platform games? Both are excellent.

I had no idea there were GBA games until you mentioned them. Are they rare-ish? Would they still use the 2.5d aspect of shooting into the foreground and background?

Finished Klonoa tonight. It truly is a diamond among platformers. Plus what a twist at the end! Watching that final cinematic, the 3D animation by Namco is impeccable especially for its time. Overall I prefer the former half of the game primarily due to setting; once it gets all hypermagic and star spinning it becomes ridiculous. I like the grounded locations in Breezegale.

Also. SHWOP.

>> Also, totally just noticed Pacman and a pellet on his hat.

When you replay Klonoa (the first one) and get all the crystals for every level (actually a certain number, not all of them it tells you on the map screen I think) it opens up some secret levels.

The mechanics are great in the first game, once you play it through at least twice you're skill level should be significantly better.

It's a game that is made to replayed, you're not expected to find the secret levels on your first play through etc.

There are several GBA games - a stupid JRPG that is all kinds of awful, and the two awesome platform games that I loved just as much as the other two sony games.

Both GBA platform games to me are must buy GBA games. The platforming is good, the gameplay is very similar to the SONy titles, but the GBA have more emphasis on puzzle solving, and really work to the strengths of the GBA.

At first when I played them many years ago I was disappointed to how different they to the other PS games, but then I really got into them, and appreciated how well designed they are.

Both games I highly recommend, just download them and play them to see if you like them enough to buy them both, which you should unless you want me to climb into your bedroom at night and murder you in cold blood and leave a note that says "Did NOT bu the two Klonoa games, death was not punishment, but sweet sweet mercy for this poor soul".

I had a browse at ebay uk and you can pick up loose carts for around $20 each, quite a bit more for boxed copies.

ebay US however has boxed copies for under $20 from some sellers.

If you don't care about boxes, this seller has Klonoa 2 (GBA) very cheap, as a loose cart and I have bought games from this particular seller before.

Does NA GBA games mesh well with PAL territory systems?

GBA has no region protection.

Many of my GBA games are NTSC-US that I play on my PAL GBA SP.

I wouldn't be recommending them otherwise.

Also, watch out for pirate carts, can't believe I didn't say that already.

I usually just send sellers a message and ask them point blank, if they don't respond then I don't buy from them. But the above link I can vouch for anyway, all his games are legit.

If you're not sure how to spot real GBA games from ones, read this guide

http://foryourentertainment.blogspot.com.au/2007/12/guide-to-identifying-counterfeit-game.html

There are a number of ways to spot fake GBA games, but the number one method is to look for the serial number on the inside of the cartridge (you can tilt it up and just look above the pins to see the Nintendo writing, which is there in legit carts, and not there in fake ones.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/Jonny9999/P1020615.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a88/Jonny9999/P1020590.jpg

The upper picture has the correct numbers printed in white at the bottom of the cart, the lower picture has does not have these numbers, also the big ugly yellow battery is a giveaway.

Obviously sellers are not going to pry open their carts to check for you, so just ask them is their carts contain the AGB number printed on the inside of the cart, which you can see if you go look at your own GBA carts by holding them under a light and look at them at an angle.

Some sellers (people who know about games in general) will have no issue if you ask them this, some sellers don't bother answering questions, so I don't buy from them. Other people are innocent idiots selling second hand pirate carts (that they bought for their kids etc) and have no idea they are pirate carts. These are the people to avoid buying from!

Surprisingly most pirate sellers will tell you straight up if you ask them about their carts being "official nintendo cartridges" and ask where they were manufactured etc (for bulk sellers).

Anyhow, most of GBA games are from ebay US and UK over the years, and I only have maybe three pirate carts I've bought by accident and I've not bought any since after doing a bit of homework, and buying from sellers who actually communicate with the people they sell to.

I hadn't even thought of pirate carts. Thank you, that's extremely handy information. That sort of thing should be broadcast to every buyer and seller around the world. Now I just need to find my GBA.

Pretty sullied by that region protection. Nintendo finally goes to shun it while Sony accepts it. Zero region feels so so right with hand helds.

On a different note, snagged Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and totally frigging looking forwards to playing it right now.

Yeah, I love the GBA. I bought a new one recently - the american model just for the brighter screen. It's a reconditioned one too, so somebody has pulled it apart and replaced all the buttons with better quality buttons, and they don't make that annoying clicking sound that most GBA SP buttons make either. I was playing Castlevania just the other day on it, it always lives next to my bed so if I can't sleep, I ignore the DSi XL and go straight for the classic SP, the bestest of handheld gaming devices!

Buy yeah, just download both of those Klonoa games and give them a fair go! Just thinking about it makes me want to play them.

Pah! Download a game I don't (unless it's off Steam)! Already made a purchase on that link. The price isn't morbid like some listings so it hurts no one. If I like Dream Champ I'll definitely give Empire a go.

All said and done, I still can't figure out how that Lombax has his grenade revolver holstered nor how he would weild it.
