EDIT: I see that apparantly the N64 is retro (c'mon, not quite retro, not quite modern :P) so move to the retro forum if deemed appropriate.

The story, according to the guy I paid for the stuff for, was his (now foolish) Sony fanboy son wanted to pay off his Laybuyed PS2 pack a bit quicker, so for a mere $80 I got the following:

1 Black Nintendo 64 Console, with all the bits and pieces.

3 Controllers, 2 grey and 1 see-thru purple.

1 Nintendo Rumble Pak

1 Nintendo Memory Pak

1 Nintendo Expansion Pak

and 18 games:

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Mario Kart 64
South Park
Madden Football 64
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Jeremy McGrath Supercross 2000
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offence
Mace: The Dark Age
GoldenEye 007
007 The World is not Enough
Killer Instinct Gold
Aero Gauge
HSV Adventure Racing
Hardcore ECW Revolution
F1 World Gan Prix
Clay Fighters 63 1/3
WCW/NWO Revenge

Not bad eh? I know theres a similar thread about this sort of thing but I wanted some comments on how good/bad/ugly this is.

Because Im insecure, and I feared my post and its replies would be lost amongst other more important posts.

Well, MK64s sticker looked like it was a little bit sun faded, but they had it in the 64 and turned on when I got there so it works. They are all in good condition, 1 controller has a very good joystick, the other 2 less so. And as icing on the cake, I even got some of the boxes and manuals. :D

I wanted some comments on how good/bad/ugly this is.Goldeneye is still great fun, amd so is Mario Karts, I never really got into the Turok games, I wonder what's on the memory card ?

Edit :  I've been playing MegaDrive games all night, but I was thinking about that memory pak, and just remembered I've got a second hand one somewhere, so now I'm looking for it so I can see whats on the bugger.
Who needs sleep any way ?

I've been playing most of those games tonight and 688 probably was the worst followed closely by Super Real Basketball. I played a fair bit of Gynoug, which i had never heard of, it is a side scrolling shmup and was good fun.

F-Zero
Gokojyo Parodius
Gradius III
Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius: Forever With Me
Megaman X
R-Type III

I only buy boxed copies of games i really want for SNES ie lufia, zelda and terranigma are the top 3 i am hunting at the moment i just buy cart only cheap to supplement my collection plus that leaves me more money left over to pay more for mint copies of dreamcast games which is my main console.Love your SFC collection by the way.

Today I got two more mega cd games in the mail. Ecco (at last) and Silpheed. They are both complete but the front case of ecco was pretty stuffed. So i just changed the cover with that of a music cd. Looks almost mint now.

I now have every mega cd title I want. Although I would buy Sewer Shark and Thunder Hawk if I found them cheap. I probably won't persue them though.

Mint copies of Super Mario World and Yoshis Island $19 each from cash converters also got Final Fantasy 9(picture discs version) for $10. Finding the Snes games in the condition i have been lately leads me to the question" How many people out there have consoles and games sitting away in their cupboards?" I could'nt imagine forgetting about owning a console like some people seem to.

You got them from Cash Convertors Gosnells.

I feel pretty stupid for passing them up yesterday.

Also, I'm sick of having collector competition in Perth. :-P

Oh well, at least I can take comfort in knowing that they were bought by someone who'll play them, and not just whore them onto eBay...

No i will not be whoring these off on ebay i bought them to replace my cart only copies which i will be whoring off on ebay. Looks like im going to have to start going to cash converters everyday im assuming you went to the cash generator and saw the 51 nes games they have there if not you should check it out they had some decent titles there $5 to $10 or the lot for $200.

Hah, you don't get 426 games by sitting on your hands. :-P

I don't often go on specific games hunting trips anymore, however, there are plenty places I can stop at on the way to many friends houses, or on the way to uni.

No i will not be whoring these off on ebay i bought them to replace my cart only copies which i will be whoring off on ebay.
Yeah, I do that too. Although, sometimes I'm impatient and I trade stuff to the GameTraders in Willetton.

Yeah, I know. I was there a couple days ago sorting through it all. There were only about two games I was interested in getting. I did consider buying the lot and selling off any duplicates and games I already had. But, out of those 51 games, there were two I wanted. The rest would be wasting space for me. Also, $200 is a lot of money and I'd rather put it towards a console I actually like.

First post, woohoo!

Ebay is my friend at the moment.
Picked up a couple of Mega Drive 2 consoles for next to nothing last week, aiming on rebuilding the collection i used to have when I was a kid.
Got with it all 3 sonics (yay), alladin, lion king, bubsy (so all the "must have" platformers, except jungle book) micro machines (yay) and a couple of others.

Am also awaiting delivery on -
Altered Beast
PGA Tour Golf 3
Street Fighter: SCE (yeah!)
Super Monaco GP (meh)
World of Illusion (yay!)
Madden 93
NBA Jam: TE (yay!)
Micro Machines 96 (super hooray)
Sonic & Knuckles (whoop!)

So I'm pretty happy at the moment - still have to track down another 6 button arcade joystick, and a stereo av cable, but it's all working well (after i cleaned the cartridge slots and the cartridges)
Probably leaving it a little late in the piece (given that it is now 2005) but i'm gonna go on a cash converters crawl in a couple of weeks, see what I can find.

NES - The Battle of Olympus $5

$35 for the following Dreamcast stuff
1 Sega Gun, 1 Sega VMU, 1 Sega Rumble pak
1 Madcatz Rumble pak, 1 Performance (?) Memory card

$30 for all the following PS stuff
PSOne & PSX with, 2 memory cards, 1 controller, all leads, 1x V3 Steering wheel and pedals

Disc only ( originals ) V-Rally, Medievil, Army Men World War, Crash Bandicoot Warped, Men in Black, Simpsons Wrestling, Asterix, Hercules, Smurfs

Where does everyone get such cheap games/consoles? Everywhere I look seems to be alot more expensive than what people on here are getting them for.

The cheapest SNES games I've seen is $8 for a loose cart in a pawnbroker. The cash converters near me have $15 SNES games.

NES games in stores I've been to are also around 8. Yet people here are getting boxed games for around 2.

Is this on ebay and people are not mentioning postage costs?

Or am I just unlucky in finding bargains.

Luck + persistence = success. If you're hunting in the wild, you have be pretty consistent in your searching. Every week, as many places as possible and over as large an area as possible. Going to the same one or two places once a month is rarely going to yield anything of worth. Collecting is a competitive hobby nowadays, and long gone are the days of good items sitting in a pawn shop, Cashies or Salvation Army/Good Sammy's for any length of time. The good stuff always goes within a matter of a day, or even a few hours from being put out for sale.

Ive tried to put them in some sort of order. Top row is all Nintendo. 2nd row starts with two Rare titles then goes all Konami. Bottom row has 3 capcom titles then 3 fantastic (non konami) shooters.

All up: 22 games, 4 controllers & one SFC console (with s-video). Took me exactly 2 months to collect all this.

I drove up to Newcastle for a wedding on the long weekend.
While I was there I raided all the local pawnbrokers and game shops that were open.
There wasn't a great deal on offer but here's what I managed to find.

2 x "Soundbox" by Joytech for the Gameboy - it's an add on speaker - $2 each (brand new)
Spacegun (Master System) no manual - it's a Sega phaser gun game $7
Road Rash (MeagaDrive) no manual $7
Sega Rally (Dreamcast) $10
Yumemi Mystery Mansion (Mega CD) complete - free - the guy didn't have a price on it and I was buying some dvd's so he chucked it in for nothing

And I know they aren't RETRO but I bought them with the intention of hanging on to them.
4 x Streetfighter 15th Anniversary controllers @ $18 each brand new
Ryu & Ken for the PS2
Guile & Bison for the X-box (which were numbered - 1830/25000 & 490/25000 respectively)

I live in Melbourne, it was an eleven hour straight drive to Newcastle. I was buggered when I got there.
But it was heaps of fun going to different shops for a change. I went to around 15 places, there were others but they weren't open because of the long weekend.

Ive never been to pawn shop (porn shops are okay though) or the markets looking for games. I figure it would be mostly unboxed junk and not worth my time. I pretty much use ebay exclusively with the occasional forum buy or games shop purchase. Sure Im paying a bit more but I get exactly what I want without having to leave the house (fark driving to woop woop to look at a box of cart only crap).

In my mind pawnshop/ market game buying is mostly for hoarders - guys n gals who want a shitload of stuff with little concern for what theyre getting or the condition. Of course I could be wrong  But how often will you find pristine copies of anything at Cashies

(it's hard enough finding pristine copies of new games at my local EB)

I guess the japanese take better care of their games. I've never seen them in that condition before.

Where do you get them from?
My whole SFC collection was bought off ebay (USA and UK ebay that is) over a 2 month period. A good number of the titles were from 'power sellers'. Guys from Japan and Hong kong who buy large amounts of stuff and are always selling. You wait till you find a copy in the condition you want then you hope someone out there doesnt want it more than you.

First game I bought was Super Metroid. Thats what started it. The item arrived in a state you could call brand new. I was pretty floored by the condition actually. Cost was about $30 AUD (that included delivery).

Prices ranged from what Id consider cheap ($10 AUD) to '*** that hurts'!! The biggest ounch was Macross Scrambled Valkyrie, a game i had to buy again after the first copy was sub standard (by my standards that is). I paid more than I wanted to but I received exactly what I paid for.

EBAY is a funny place though. Stuff can go for $50 one week then $12 the next. Often when an item sells for a high price a whole bunch of ebay gazers will chuck their copies online in an attempt to get a similar return. I saw Vib Ribbon sell for $55 then bought a better copy a week later for $16 (Vib's gameplay bored me to tears btw).

the japanese generally do keep games in better condition. More respect for the boxes all round.

If anyone's looking to get their first good Japanese import I'd suggest starting with Sin & Punishment (JP N64). Below are two on ebay atm....

It's true most pawn brokers won't have the stuff you would want to put in one of your little baggies, unless it was to throw it away.

I am a hoarder. I'm also a hunter and warrior.

I enjoy organising the expedition, loading up the supplies (eski) and the anticipation before arriving at our destination.

I enjoy the thrill of the chase and the company of good mates while we trek through the jungle of wires and cables to find an AV lead at the markets or the parched drive through the Great SEGA desert to find a copy of a game long forgotten and covered in dunes of dust at a pawnbrokers, or battling the hordes of bargain crazed infidels at a garage sale.

Then I enjoy singing the songs of our exploits & plundering, songs that can be passed down as legend, as we wearily make our way home, eager to try out the hard earned spoils of battle. :duel:

Markets, pawnbrokers and garage sales are not for the faint hearted.

U can romanticise long drives to bad pawnshops - Id still prefer to own nicer stuff at the end of the day.

90% of the complete stuff I have has been found in the wild. I have found eBay to the the domain of those with deep pockets and big budgets.

Not to say I don't buy off eBay, but rather it's a supplement to buying stuff in the wild and it usually ends up being my last resort for if I can't find a game/system/accessory locally.

Buying in the wild is cheaper, more rewarding and anyone who says there isn't good stuff out there is wrong. Patience, persistence and luck.

As for loose and complete stuff, I've already been over my rationale several times in this forum - it just depends on the console/region I'm buying for.

I won't ever understand buying the mintiest of games, putting them on display and never touching them. I'm a gamer first, collector second. I'm here to enjoy my games and not jizz over the fact that I can see my reflection in the boxart gloss.

Besides, I've found my fair share of mint/sealed stuff. I'm just as careful as I can be with them, but I won't stop their condition from getting in the way of gaming.

I guess if I were to compare myself with others here, I'm somewhat in the middle between craptest and dcking's mintness fetish, and cranky and chilli's 'hoard all games' strategy.

Anyway, today:

My SFC boxes are in baggies but the carts themselves are kept seperately when being played. So I dont see how having stuff in mint condition and looking after it gets in the way of gaming. Takes approximately 2 minutes to get the SFC system out and fire up a game. So spare us the 'Im a gamer first, collector second' rhetoric.

Would I be less of a photographer if I displayed my photos in frames rather than keep them in a shoe box? Well according to you yes.

I have found eBay to the the domain of those with deep pockets and big budgets.
Well you need far deeper pockets to keep up with current game releases. You're better served going retro and going ebay than paying RRP if lack of funds is an issue. But sure, prices on ebay are higher than those at the markets. Sometimes items go for rediculous prices.

For me though it comes down to convenience and choice. Most videogame people with something decent to sell these days will wack it on ebay. I think the days of finding quality items at pawnshops/ markets are numbered.

I'm here to enjoy my games and not jizz over the fact that I can see my reflection in the boxart gloss. Im guessing youre more aroused by the dirty items Ezri. That slightly mangled copy of Paper Mario ...so dirty ...so naughty ....sooo "ahhh aahhhh..."

Well I for one didn't have a disposable income at 7 years old. I only had a Master System II until 1997 when i got a PSX. My SMSII collection consisted of 5 games, which were gifts from my parents. We also lived in a town with a population of 8,000 with the nearest city being Darwin which was a 2 day drive. So what little games were sold in the town cost $90+.

When I got my PSX what games i did get were still gifts from my parents. I only ever started to buy my own prior to the release of the PS2 when they were coming down in price.

I wasn't buying my own shit until i got a PS2 when they dropped to $500, by then i was working after school.

So not everyone had stuff handed to them on a silver platter ;)

02-02-2006, 08:22 AM
I also couldn't afford to buy heaps of games when they came out. My NES collection (which was my first console) up until last year, consisted of 5 games. Back in the day, with friends and family members, we would each buy a different game and share them around, so our personal collections never grew that quickly.

But now I'm looking to collect the ones I missed out on, as well as finding the games my friends and cousins sold purely for nostalgic value. The same applies for other consoles.

When I bought my ps2 and was able to afford games, I had full control over the amount of games I got, so now I get more games "when they come out".

Im assuming you cant remove the price sticker from 'Secrets of Mana' without damaging the box. Look sliek an old Grace Bros price tag. Irritating funkers those stickers. Grrrrrr

I paid $150 for both including registered post so i thought it was a good deal considering a copy of terranigma in this condition would go for about $100 to $150 and i have never seen a Pal Secret of Mana this good but i would say it would go for about $150 to $200. As to where i bought them a friend of my mums at work got into some financial strife so he sold them because these were his spare copies. I am afraid to try and remove the sticker because it has been on there for so long so i am not even going to try. I sold my cart only copy of Secret of Mana and made more than 1/3 of my money back so it made the deal even sweeter.

I know this is gonna start a bit of a war here but, why do you all consider yourself such big gamers buying all these old games??? Why didn't you buy them when the orignially came out if your so "hardcore" i've got plenty of super famicom, saturn, dreamcast, games but i bought them when they came out 10 years ago. Not a few days ago from cash converters. Whats the deal?
Well Im not aware that Ive been calling myself hardcore. Im pretty casual with my game playing. A few hours here and there. Only occasionally finishing a game. Rarely (if ever) mastering a game (unless we're talking WR64 or Goldeneye :p ).

Im buying 'old games' now because theyre the titles that interest me. When I was growing up pretty much all I played was the C64 and the Amiga 500. So now that Ive taken a keener interest in console games, specifically the big N, I find myself looking backwards as much as forwards.

As for all this bragging for finding some old game. Yep. Its pretty silly. But for those of us chasing the past its a lot of fun. I definately enjoy the conversations in this thread (and forum) far more than I do in the other areas of hyper.

So to summarize. Hardcore? No. Having fun? Definately.

I like craptest have never claimed to be hardcore and the reason i did'nt buy them 10 years ago is because i had no income(i was 13). And i don't really see why buying games at a particular point makes you any more or less of a gamer.

Wrath of the black manta (NES) - cartridge and sleeve, $6

Kung Fu (NES) - cartridge and sleeve, $5

Dreamcast VMU - cap missing, $8

Playstation Gun, $15

This isn't really retro, but I'll share it anyway. I was at cashies and they had a shiny red Playstaion 2 console with a red vertical stand. I was about to buy it, when this lady comes along, and says to the assistant, "I'll buy all your playstation and playstation 2 consoles, including that red one". I was devastated. I'm annoyed at myself because all I had said to the assistant was "this ps2 is pretty cool"... not "I'll take it thanks". So they had no idea I was interested beforehand. I was beaten to it. It was $160, which I think would be alot more on ebay. There were 16 PSones (8 original and 8 redesigned ones), a slimline ps2 and the red ps2. She bought the lot for $700, which i thought was a bit much.

I was in cashies today aswell, saw Frequency for about $18, but i've already been on a spree since centrelink started coming in so i had to resist.

I was mainly in there to check out their Dreamcasts. But I was a little dubious, as they are labeled twice. one says about $80, the other says $120. The $80 has stuff about controller and games, written on it, but crossed out. I looked further back in the case and they had a bag with DC, Cables, Controller and Gun for $175. I thought that was a little steep.

They also had a GCN for $70 but no sign of cables or controllers.

Wow, someone more elitist than me - who'd a thought it?

Why am I buying old games? Because I didn't have hundreds of dollars to spend on them when I was 5 or 10 years old.

I started gaming on a 286 PC in 1989, then got my first console (SNES) in 1995, and then an N64 but I played a lot of Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, PlayStation at friends places, in store demo kiosks or renting them.

I got into retro gaming for the following reasons:

1. To own all the games/consoles I played back in the day, but couldn't afford.

2. Play all the classics I missed out on.

I think the same can be said for anyone here who retro games for reasons other than pure 'collecting'.

So in summary, I suggest you change your attitude to something other than: "I had a bajillion dollars to spend on games back in the day, why didn't everyone else?"

Going on an average RRP of $89, it would have cost me $13,000 to be as hardcore as you, and thats just for my Mega Drive collection. He could've posed it in a less inflammatory manner.

Id have figured the Retroactive moderator would want to make people feel welcome. Yet so far your reply has been the most unfriendly.
I want people who want to be here and contribute positively to the forum to feel welcome. People who want to shit-stir aren't welcome here (or in the rest of Hyper for that matter).

You of all people craptest, you be familiar with that quality.

That barely makes any sense to me - you're criticising me for attempting to run my forum section that I am in fact in charge of? Okay....

But if it's the neg rep that I gave you that you're so incensed about, I already explained it was my reaction to you not helping a situation of discipline.

And if that's truly what you're annoyed about, then I really don't feel at fault. You made the joke - I was trying to do my job. I didn't really appreciate it at the time and it's long gone. If you want to dwell over it, then so be it.

Being a MOD you've responsibility to rise above the petty OT bickering, and as I see it, you're not.

this no longer has anything to do with retro games, so both of you bugger the hell off somewhere else if you want to rant about each other so we ca get back to talking about our latest purchases

Hey good to see some good thought responses, i was trying to intice a little flaming to see what you guys would say, but back on topic
recently i've been buying back a few playstation games i sold when i was younger.
So on the weekend i picked up Formula 1, and Wipeout for 5 dollars each complete.
I remember buying wipeout a few weeks before the playstation was even launched and i sold it a few months later to buy The Need For Speed. So now i need about 5 more games to have all the playstation games i ever sold.
And a note to all never ever sell a game to get a new one you'll feel lost without it.
Lucky for me the only games i've ever sold were a few playstation ones.

:o

I so want to get that game. Its the first game Core Design self published when they were primarily Amiga developers (I'm pretty sure they made the likes of Rick Dangerous and stuff beforehand for Firebird etc.).
It was also the game that almost sent them bust. They were still trying to get the game finished the day before release (It was finished but they found some massive game killing bugs that needed ironing out), and when they did the disk replicators had already closed so they produced all of the initial batch themselves as well as distributing the game to all the retailers.
Their deadline was marked for when their money would run out and would have to close their doors forever. They were pretty damn lucky.

Sadly I haven't played it myself (I stupidly passed up a MD port of it a couple years ago due to no funds at the time), but from what I could gather it was a great game.

btw, Kicky = massive Amiga fanboy :p

That's a jogCon controller. Namco made it for Sony. That wheel in the middle is designed to act like a steering wheel - though I can't say how good it would be. I know Ridge Racer Type 4 is definitely compatible with it, though I would guess that any PSX racing game that is 'analog' compatible would work with it.

The jogcon went pretty much the way of the negcon, great idea, but flawed.

The big wheel is essetially a steering will with force feedback. Opposed to the mere rumbling in a dual shock, the Jogcon fought back. I should really get one as it sounds like a great idea. Grasping the thing was up to personal preference. It looked like you steer it with your thumb in the little dugout, while some people grasped it with their finger tips.

I guess most analogue games would be compatible, but its unknown how many use the force feedback feature. Could only just be Ridge Racer Type 4, which was sold with the controller as a bundle for a short while.

The jogcon is only compatible with Ridge Racer 4 and Breakout on ps1, and Ridge Racer V on PS2. Its great with RR4, but on V they took off the little meter down the bottom of the screen that tells you how much youve turned the wheel. Without it its hard to guage when your at full lock =/

The negcon controller was the best one the playstation i remember. It worked with all games that had a Negcon symbol and dual analouge arcade stick symbol (always wanted one of those huge mothers) but the negcon was so cool in racing games twisting it in the middle to turn sounded weird but worked so damn well.

So on my weekend crusade to find the lost sega swirls I had some mixed luck.

The Garage sale mountains proved to be barren and almost depleted my endurance to the point that I was ready to concede defeat and turn to the use of the dark magiks (e-bay).

Next stop on my journey the Market of Doom.
But naught Sega was to be found.
I did however find a SNES mouse and Mario paint cart and despite the fact that I was wearing my belt of charisma, $15 was the best price I could negotiate.
I found a peasant woman, badly in need of a bath, crouched over her goods which were strewn across the ground, and spied a Gameboy camera I offered her 2 gold coins. She smiled with her crooked teeth showing and said "it's yours".
It appears my charisma belt may only work on old hags, just my luck.
I also found a copy of The Fifth Element for playstation for $4, and a spiderman & a magneto figure.
It was then that I realised, my mind was becoming clouded by an evil sorcerers spell and I was becoming side tracked from my true quest - SEGA GOLD.
I rallied my troops around a carvan replenishing our fatigue with sausages of mystery from an eastern traveller.

I then told them that I now knew where we must go - to battle directly with the evil mage himself - Cashius Convertius.
At first my companions seemed unwilling, but knew it had to be done.

Once in the castle of Cashius Convertius, we found Sega Gold, I got a Mega Drive boxed ($20) & a Saturn Memory cart ($5), and Cranky got a Saturn boxed ($50), I also found a PSone boxed for ($35). I tried a potion to boost my mercantile skills but Cashius Convertius resisted my feeble magik.
However it seems my belt also works on young hags as his apprentice fell prey to it's powers. She reminded the sorcerer of the oath he had taken just that morning to provide a free PS controller & game with a system purchase so I also picked up a Millennium Soldiers (PS) and a controller for free much to his distaste.

I am currently in an Ebay state of mind (buying titles I want, rather than outright collecting - that may change!)
Just recently managed to score a 32x console, which i was pretty darn happy about. Got it cheap in the end, I reckon - $45 I got it for, with the metal plates and MD1 connector cable - no MD2 spacer though, unfortunately.
So I have been playing almost exclusively Virtua Racing Deluxe for the last few days, and I reckon it's fantastic! I am so used to picking up racing games and being able to win, it's fun having one that is actually a challenge - I still haven't won a Formula or Prototype race - only stock cars.
Also picked up Landstalker for an absolute steal ($12 delivered!) - so am guiding Nigel around the place. Landstalker was one of the ones I always wanted as a kid, but was told it was too expensive. Not anymore ;)
