Yeah, I enjoyed having the images too, but it's very slow loading and they tend not to be the PAL covers anyway. I am also unable to find 'zoo puzzle' to add to the ps2 list :(
bitch bitch moan moan :P
Zoo Puzzle was release in the US under the name "SuperLite 2000 Zooo". You'll find it listed as such.
Though you may want to let them know that the PAL title is different.
Yesterday: Circuit Breakers (PSX) - complete, $10.00

Okay. A few to add.
Pilotwings (SFC/JPN) - Complete. $18 AUD
River City Ransom Ex (GBA/US) - factory sealed. okay - barely retro. But it is a NES port so shoosh
Konami Arcade Collection (GBA/US) - factory sealed. Again not really retro. But it was a real bargain for enhanced versions of some old favs. Green Beret with 2 brand new levels. Yie Ar Kung Fu with 2 player Vs. Yummo!!
Castlevania Symphony of the Night (standard edition/PAL) - complete. $102. Finally caved in and bought this overrated super metroid clone  . Turned up today and is in really great condition. DIsc without a scratch. Front and back inserts are perfect. Manual is near mint, with only a crease on the back cover letting down the team. Glad I didnt try and get the collectors edition with the art book. Good copies of that go for 70 GBP LMAO!! Didnt really want to pay $100 but I came to realise my chances of finding a cheap copy in good condition were zero and none. The other week an ex rental copy went for $100 as well, so for what I got I should be happy (cheaper than RR6 on the 360 as well).
Enjoying SOTN. I like the speech though they sound like the cast of Metal Gear Solid, which doent really fit with the whole old day dracula thing. I still like C:CotM better. And Super Metroid of course. I even think Super Castlevania IV deserves more kudos and I hope Konami return to a linear 2D Castlevania one of these days. Yep. SOTN appreciation has really got out of hand imo.
But anyway. Now I own it. Yay.

Let's see, last purchase I made was for a Master Converter for the Mega Drive, for those who don't know it a big clunky thing tha lets you play Master System games on the mega drive. 10 bucks from Cash-afx.
Probably the dumbest thing I bought from them was a Beatmania controler, in the hopes I'll track down a PSO beatmania game.

Hahahhahaha... I had a similar story but it had a happy ending...
I found a copy of the game, but alas, no controller. Anyway months passed and then I came across the controller at cashies for $10. I bought it, raced back to the video store that had it months ago and BAM still there for $10. So now I have both :D
Anyway, I thought about it when I drove to the store, but you can always get one of the many import beatmania games that have been released with it.
How much did it cost you?

My latest acquisition: NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC (DC) - $15 inc. postage off ebay.
I got it and it's in perfect condition, but the instruction booklet and cardboard inserts smells of smoke :S
I didn't bother digging up the retro stinky thread, but will airing them out remove the smell or is there something else I can do?

Just leave it open and air it outside (on a dry day, and NOT in the sun) for a few days.
Did it with a Dreamcast console box, and it did the trick.

Man you got some gold PC adventure games there.
Yeah, I was pretty rapt.
I sorted through the box for about 5 or 10 minutes at a garage sale and pulled out Riven, Carmen Sandiego, Dark Seed II and D.
I asked the woman how much for those four and she said ten bucks.
I said no worries.
Then her husband said I could have the whole box for 20. SOLD.
Hahaha did you eventually manage to get the rest of that ebay lot in the house alright? Are those still waiting out in the garage? The Atari ST stuff ? That was from a garage sale and I've still got it stashed out in my garage. I'm trying to tidy up my Sega stuff a bit (as it takes up a fair space) before I bring that in.
And I've still haven't picked up the Dreamcast kiosk I bought ages ago.
And now I've gone and bought an X-box kiosk.
I am so dead.
I'll have to sell a console ot two and a couple of games as a token of good will.
Hey Not Matt, I noticed we have some of the same arcade boards.
I've got that same Street Fighter and also Final Fight, but I've got a working Alien Storm.
I used to have the Snow Bros. but sadly it was just a loaner.
Which is your favourite ?
And did I read that you work on them yourself ?
Also I haven't tried that Smash TV on my Gamegear yet, so I can't give you any feedback on that sorry.
I think I might need to get an assistant.
To clean, test out, rate the condition, catalog and store my games.
Just like Kramer had that time.
If only I could come up with a catchy company name.

I totally forgot/ never knew you had arcade machine/s hahahahaha
So by same street fighter do you mean SF2CE or SSF2: The New Fighters ... can't remember if I posted but I was able to do a trade to fix the mix up. Would love to get an SFA board to go with the CPS2 mother board.
You wouldn't be willing to trade/sell Alien Storm would you? Please please please! It made me so upset when I ruined it, if it was dead before I got it that would have been fine, but I had isolated how to fix it and cause I was so happy, I wanted to play it again and it died :(
I just have really strong memories of that game and also Outrunners. We went on a cruise ship like 3 times over a few year span when I was younger. There was a small arcade which had a twin Outrunners cabinet and a Sega machine with Moonwalker and Alien Storm. The games were free and I spent so much time in there. On the 3rd timethey got rid of the machines for newer machines (Hotd2, Zombie Revenge and Hydro Thunder + one other), great games, but it just wasn't the same :(
Anyway, I don't want to put you through a guilt trip, if you can help thatd be great, if not I understand, it's ok. What other boards do you have out of interest? What's your arcade set up like also?
Chilli
28-05-2006, 03:28 AM
Don't worry it'll take a bit more than that to make me feel any guilt.
No. Can't do it.
It took me ages to track it down. It was quite hard to find, and that was probably ten years ago.
Like you the four games I own all have sentimental reasons for their purchase.
The only other game I have is Cabal.
I originally bought my first cabinet to play Final Fight. I fried the power source on that machine and still haven't got around to getting it fixed.
My second cabinet came with Street Fighter 2, I can't remember which one, it's been a while since I've fired it up.
Cranky might remember, or I could just turn it on and find out.
Maybe tomorrow.
And all my boards are JAMMA.
Thats all I know.
Good Luck finding another Alien Storm.

Wellllll..... next time I'm in Melbourne, can I come round for a game?
Can I just ask though. Where'd you buy it from/how much did you pay?
Unless it comes in a big hard plastic case I'd say it's not SSF2..... maybe SF2, SF2 Championship Edition, SF2 Hyper Fighting or SF2 Turbo Hyper Fighting ..... even then there's multiple versions of those, so prob not worth bothering ;)
Edit: Oh btw, I know Cabal, was considering picking it up in the auction. Instead I came out with a bunch of useless bards >.<
Edit: Oh and if you ever have to get rid of it... you know who to tell first!

Described as 'brand new & mint'. I think I can make out damage on the lower left corner though so I'll be interested to see how 'brand new' it actually is.
Yet another crap Kirby game. What was I thinking!!!
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e244/craptest/kirby_64.jpg
Well, given it's age it's not unreasonable for it to have some wear and tear from being stored with other items, or sitting on a store shelf unwanted and constantly sifted.
That said, argh who cares about mintness.....IT CONFOUNDS ME.

Holy hell. That is the single most expensive game I have ever seen on eBay. Move over Radiant Silvergun.
Radiant Silvergun has never been a contender for 'most expensive' anyway. Too many copies floating around. And that item is like a 2 of a kind demo - so its not really fair to compare its price to a mass produced, commercially available game.
To my knowledge certain NEO GEO games sell for around $3000 USD consistently, depending on region and condition. Thats just going n what Ive been told mind you. Havent seen it myself (cause Ive no need to watch NeoGeo auctions).
Man. Id love to go to a garage sale and find a Picasso. Id buy a PSP the next day for sure  (nah. Id probably just get my 7th N64 console instead)
Yeah prototypes can't be compared to commercial releases - they have a very 'special' fanbase following :-P
Also, I believe PAL Kizuna Encounter for the Neo Geo AES takes the cake at one eBay auction where it went for about $10,000.
Someone may have to confirm that though.

This isnt exactly retro, but I picked up Mario Sunshine for $10 a couple of weeks ago.

It went for $12,500 US on e-Bay over 2 years ago...the owner was in Adelaide and he got it through a trade when he owned a video game store. The buyer was from the US . It was originally bought from Game Infinity in Chinatown in Sydney. It is one of only four copies so far discovered (two others were bought in Austria and one from Germany). The story goes that hardly anyone bought the English version (which was only released in Europe , one copy of which was imported by Game Infinity), and the unsold copies were sent back to Japan to be re-stickered in Japanese with Japanese booklets. Samurai Showdown 4 was released at a similar time so most gamers bought that instead . From memory the copy sold on e-Bay had a small tear to the insert .

That auction link is interesting...the garage find involving the discovery of those Nes prototypes (if it's true) is surprising . You'd expect an ex-Nintendo employee to have some idea of the potential value of those prototypes, rather than selling them for 50 cents each. The lucky buyer at the garage sale probably has paid less than $50 for the lot and it could be worth up to $30,000 to $40,000 . A quick google search or e-Bay price check should have been routine before selling .

I found Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver (DC) for $1, although it is missing the front half of the box and the manual.
I also came across a box with a heap of N64 manuals and a Sonic Adventures (DC) for $6.
I was just about to ask if they had the games to go with the manuals when some old guy in his fifties snatched up all the N64 carts a couple of boxes away from me, probably to sell on ebay, the stinky old bastard.
Anyway I guess thats what I get for hunting with a hangover, well at least he won't have the manuals for them.

It's just kind of weird that a game that's only 3 months old is considered retro.
I know, and I'd be the first person to stand up and state that the Dreamcast is a part of the current console generation (PS2/XB/GCN).
But seeing as the Sega forum disappeared a LONG time ago and DC discussion would get lost in General Gaming, Retroactive is the only real home for Dreamcast on Hyper.
Besides, the next-gen is already here, and the Dreamcast is only getting older so Retroactive is ever becoming more and more the right place for DC talk.

 So how long do we have to wait before we can start talking Cube and X-box in Retro ?
Is it when the console has been superseded, or when you can no longer purchase the items new in "mainstream" stores ?
Edit: Or perhaps a set amount of time from the release of the last title.
It's when I say so. :-P
But realistically, it's when the console's been off the mainstream marketplace for a great deal of time.
It's not like there's a flick of a switch and BAM, a console is ripe for discussion here. It'll be a gradual thing.
I mean, I'm sure there'll be a change over period where initially, we'll start to talk about some of the early games on the PS2, Xbox and GCN. Games like Ridge Racer V, Fantavision, Tekken Tag Tournament are over 6 years old already (all PS2 launch titles).
But at the same time, I'm not ready to talk about Shadow of the Colossus or Gran Turismo 4 here yet. :-P
We'll know when it's time (i.e. When I Say So. :-P)

the concept of "retro" is tied pretty strongly to nostalgia. Say "Playstation 2", did you get misty eyed? No me neither, but then I never will :P
Basically when its forgotten by the mainstream and with the price of PS3, PS2 is going to be in the consumer conscious for a little while longer methinks. Cube will probably go retro before PS2 in this case.
Old Stoney
06-07-2006, 11:55 AM
Under Defeat is retro-style game, even though it's new. It brings back memories of old school arcade schmups with a glossy current gen sheen. So I guess you could consider old style games and compilations also come under the banner of "Retro" even though they are new.
And to stay on topic, I just bought Super Magnetic Neo for the DC for $20.30. I waste a lot of money on ebay but I'm guessing I'm not the only one.
the concept of "retro" is tied pretty strongly to nostalgia. Say "Playstation 2", did you get misty eyed? No me neither, but then I never will :P
Yeah, because it hasn't been long enough.
When I first got into collecting, the GCN had only just come out and it was difficult for me to call the N64 retro. For the last five years, I'd played my N64 and for a lot of those years, it was quite state of the art, so initially it was difficult for me to think of it as an old-school console. Nowadays, I don't give a second thought to calling the N64 retro.
Given time, I'm sure we'll look back on the PS2, XB and GCN in the same way.
Oh, and andronicarse, I for one will definitely always look fondly back on the PS2. ;-)

Haha, I know. But 'eh, I was bitter back in the day, and I'll be the first to shout that the PS2 was an overpriced piece of crap during it's first 18 months on the market.
I couldn't stand people ignoring the DC, a console that already HAD an excellent library of games, was cheaper AND had four controller ports in favour of the more expensive PS2 simply because "i'll play DVD's on it until good games come out."
I heard that statement (or words to that effect) many times and it really angered me.
But from 2002 onwards the PS2 really started pumping out decent titles and has become excellent value for money. I got mine in December 2002 and I'd have to say I picked it up just at the right time.

Yeah I was joking, it's just that on some SEGA fan forums there are some very bitter characters out there. I used to check out a Panzer Dragoon forum but it really became intolerable in a short time (that and there's nothing to talk about with Panzer, considering the alck of new games)
The PS2 is good enough, there arent enough exclusives that interest me and I still can't use a Dual Shock properly. It does hurt the DC suffered because of market perceptions of the DC. Oh well.

Never seen one before and it's a really nice pad.How does it handle? Who's the manufacturer?
There's no manufacturing info on the pad whatsoever, not even on the internal circuit board. I might hazard a guess and say it's been made by Capcom themselves, but I really have no idea. Can't find any info on the net about this particular pad.
It handles quite nicely, for 2D fighters. The d-pad is perfect for rolling off those quarter/half/full circle moves and the rest of the buttons are nice and clicky and responsive.
The d-pad is a bit worn, but still works quite well considering it's age. For $5 I can't complain. :-)

Duck Maze, SideWinder and Othello. Duck Maze and Othello are pretty mediocre, but I can't get SideWinder to work properly. It's not a piggyback cart, though it does have a weird part at the back where it looks like you can plug something into it. The Australian Ps2 version of Manhunt was on the shelves for about 3 months before it was removed from store shelves. I've seen about 5 copies in the wild over the past 2 years. Myer had it in a discount sale a few years ago for about $40 .The Xbox version was released after the Ps2 version and was removed from sale a few months later. I've only seen one copy of the Xbox version in the wild.
In the UK both versions are extremely common as they were never banned and were selling for only a few pounds each brand new on e-Bay a while ago . The official Australian release is the one to get from a collector's point of view , otherwise just import it from the UK .

It's not terrible. It was definately overhyped on release, as everyone was wetting themselves over the then-amazing graphics. The controls are quite frustrating, but it's not a bad game.
It's an unfortunate game.
The video sequences and brilliant and the plot is amazingly epic. I really got drawn into it very quickly. The voice acting is pretty bad though, but the audio department is redeemed by a brilliant soundtrack. Seriously, this game has some of the most impressive dramatic orchestral music I've ever heard.
The bad: the character movement/controls are jerky and innaccurate. Moving your character is difficult and he looks like an idiot.
But, the game is redeemed enough to warrant further play. I just wanna know what the story is all about. :-P
And as you said, for $5 you can't really go wrong.

Justanothergamer - I have X-Com: Apocalypse running through DosBox, I didn't have to do anything particular to get it running. It sounds like there's a problem with your sound configuration to me, other than that I could only suggest looking for a patch or google for people with a similar problem.
EDIT - Now that I've thought about it some more, I do remember that I had to screw around with the sound settings quite a bit before it would work. Something about it not liking my sound card or it only working on one of those weird sound cards that nobody used. Sorry I can't be more specific but I don't play it at all (Much prefer X-Com:TFTD).

Yes. I'm a sad monkey.
I really like Re-Volt. It's an excellent RC racing game with spot on controls and physics, great track design and fun weapons. I've finished the N64 version heaps of times, and I just wanted to see how much better the DC version is. DC version has a more constant frame-rate, 12 cars on track (as opposed to 4) and runs in high-resolution.
Personally I feel Re-Volt is the only decent game ever made by Acclaim.
It's sequels were shite though.

Wii Virtual console is legal emulation on next gen hardware. You wouldnt list it here as a 'retro purchase'. No more than you'd come boast about buying Taito Legends for PS2 (Let's just forget that I posted my Konmai ARcade Classics (GBA) purchase here. It was a slow eeek people. Honest).
A good rule of thumb - If its OOP, sticky, yellowing and smells of cat p*ss its probably TRUE retro
As Ezri said - this thread is largely about bragging rights. It's about collecting. It's about original items. Retro hardware.
Compilations & legal emulation are fine. Great way to play old classics and participate in retro discussions. But they dont rate a mention in this particular thread (unless of course its a compilation on a retro console - like Capcom Classics on the Sega Saturn or Mario Allstars on the SNES).

Now as you can plainly see, these things are absolutely filthy. They've sat at my Dad's house for 10 years out in the open, and my Dad isn't the cleanest of people.
Does anyone have any tips on cleaning them without damaging them? Would just a damp cloth suffice?
The Megadrive also stuggles to load some games, I have to reinsert them several times to get them to work. I'm guessing it's a combination of age and dirt but is there anything that can be done about it?
Also, is there an AV cord that can be used with the Megadrive? Plugging it in through the arial is all good, but the signal is shit when looked at through my component spoiled eyes. Would a Saturn AV cord work?
Thanks guys
Does anyone have any tips on cleaning them without damaging them? Would just a damp cloth suffice?
Yeah, a damp cloth for the exterior surfaces. Or you could do what I do and be really thorough - disassemble the outer shell and wash it in warm water. :-D
Good for getting dirt and dust out of every groove. But yeah, a damp cloth will do the trick for th emost part.
The Megadrive also stuggles to load some games, I have to reinsert them several times to get them to work. I'm guessing it's a combination of age and dirt but is there anything that can be done about it?
Yeah, the cartridge connector just needs a clean. Get some Windex (or similar alcohol-based cleaning fluid, and rub the contacts on the cart connector. You'll need something very thin get in there though - that part I'll leave up to you to determine. Also clean all the game cartridges and their connectors. There's no point cleaning the system if it's just going to get gunked up again by dirty games.
Also, is there an AV cord that can be used with the Megadrive? Plugging it in through the arial is all good, but the signal is shit when looked at through my component spoiled eyes. Would a Saturn AV cord work?
NO. The Saturn AV cord has a different pin configuration and will NOT work with the Mega Drive.
As for a Mega Drive AV cable, there's a quite a few available cheaply on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AV-CABLE-SEGA-Mega-Drive-2-GENESIS-2-3-Nomad-CDX_W0QQitemZ270018948194QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3642QQ ssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I've been trying over the last few months to update but it keeps freezing up.
They've been having problems with adding games to their database for months now - many people have complained, but of course, IGN doesn't listen.
You can still add games however - when you do a search, don't use the 'add game' tickbox. Click on the game title itself, and then add it to your collection using the infobox that appears on the right side of the screen. Select the 'Collection' radio button and there should be a button that says 'Edit List Details'. Thisi will take you to the game infro screen. You can then edit it's details as you wish, or just click 'Done' up the top to add it to your collection as per normal.

Post-modern retro? No? Not happening?

Seeing as no-one else is commenting on Not Matt's $14 Panzer Dragoon Saga, let me be the first to say congratulations. Unless you're going to resell it, in which case you're a jerk. :)

The only games on current gen platforms that could be considered legitimate in this thread are compilations of retro games e.g. Capcom Classics Collection, Taito Legends, Midway Arcade Treasures etc.
And even then, it's not really the sort of thing you post here anyway. Tetris DS is about as retro has New Super Mario Bros. Just because the first game came out in the series over 20 years ago, doesn't mean that it's modern day successor is 'retro'.

Nah couldn't do that, least not at this point in time. I just need to get an AV cable for my Saturn so I can actually play the damn thing. Anyway here's a couple pics.
