While cleaning out my room the other day, I found Killer Instinct, instantly I pulled out the old dust-ridden SNES and had a go. 'Twas awesome.......until I felt like playing DKC2 then remembered it was stolen ages ago......so I played Kirby.

What it means by Digital Learning System is that you can pre program moves in, granted thats a n00bish thing to do & not something I would do. I shall let you know how it performs when it comes in the mail, but from what I recall it was very good quality when I last had one.
Ah... it's not such a noobish thing to do if you're going to program combos that are impossible to do by hand. That stick might be worth something. I know the Hori and ASCII command sticks are very rare and sought after.

Picked up a copy of Super Punch Out! for the SNES a couple of weeks back, complete with mint box and booklet. Clocked it on my first sitting without a loss (I hired it out ad-nausum from the local Videoland when I was a young-un. I ended up filling up all the fastest time boards with my name :) ) Still, I was glad I could add it to the collection.

I don't know how I found out about it, I know its one of those games that I played that way that I'm non to proud of on a PC before I played it on a SNES if you know what I mean and I was blown away. I stopped playing it right away and hunted around for a copy on ebay, was soo happy to get it. I don't know how it slipped under my radar but I'm soo glad I have it, it really is one of the best SNES games I have played, and the fact that there isn't anything else really like this out there is a shame, its a really fun arcade style of play. Hopefully it'll make its way to the VC so more people can enjoy its awesomeness

Recent Retro l00t for me
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/flamecondor/Boxart/flameretro1.jpg
Starting at the top Super Gameboy for SNES, we all know what it does, and damit I wanted to play Gameboy games on an uber 42 inch plasma TV.
ON the SNES Side of things we have X-Men Mutant Apocalypse, awesome game I'm sure you'll all agree. Saturday Night Slam Masters, a game I only just found out about, had a look at, looks awesome and what do you know is awesome, soo happy with that one & WWF Wrestlemania the Arcade game, which is one of my least fav WWF games and only got it cause it came with Slam Masters.
For Gameboy starting at the top we have Tumblepop which is a Gameboy port of an Arcade game I used to love playing back in the day. It was kinda like Bubble Bobble + Ghostbusters, you use your vacuum to suck up ghosts and shoot them at other ghosts, great game IMO (only just found out there was a Gameboy version and had to get it).
Star Wars is a port of the NES version, I used to have this game for Gameboy and I loved it, felt the need to have it again, now if I can only geta copy of Super Star Wars for SNES, I'll be happy. Hook, again a Gameboy conversion of the NES game, wasn't too bad if I recall correctly, never finished it, but I'm sure it was fun. Jurassic Park is also based off the NES game, it was awesome, I need not say anymore.
Aerostar, I only got this cause I wanted a SHMUP for my Gameboy & I already had Parodius on my SNES, looks ok will have to play abit more though. Ghostbusters 2, easily the best Ghostbusters game I have ever played, made by HAL Labatories, its an awesome little top down game, I guess it kinda feels like Zombies ate my Neighbors, but not really. Ducktales, NES version, ported to Gameboy, if you ain't heard of the NES version you shouldn't be reading this forum.
Solomons Club and Space Invaders I only got because they came with Ducktales, not too bad, but I wanted Ducktales, not them. Metroid 2, I love this game, others hate it, I don't know why. I always found it to be a good game, plus it was also my first Metroid game and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Mid-80s they were $40 each for the dual screen clamshell versions at Toyworld. I used to froth at the glass cabinet that had them all as a kid so I have the price tag embedded in my mind. Less for the single screens.
I also remember circa 1987-88 NES games were selling for $89.95! Damn expensive.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/flamecondor/RetrobuysApril2008.jpg
Starting Top Right, Super Star Wars, Super Empire Strikes Back, Super Return of the Jedi, Darius Twin, Ren & Stimpy Time Warp, Captain America & The Avengers, Weapon Lord & Chaos Engine.
I gotta say I'm sure I remember Ren & Stimpy being somewhat playable back in the day, but now I dunno. Also Avengers aint that too crash hot, but its not bad. The Super Star Wars games, well what more needs to be said about them, they are awesome. Darius Twin is just more SHMUP fun and you can never have enough SHMUP Fun. Weapon Lord I got after seeing a thread about Fighting games on GAF and it being highly talked about and The Chaos Engine I recall seeing some stuff about it in NMS and it sparked my intrest so why not.
Also NTSC SNES carts FTW, sooo easy to store, unlike the annoying rounded PAL and Japan ones, they sit nice and flat ontop of each other.

Also NTSC SNES carts FTW, sooo easy to store, unlike the annoying rounded PAL and Japan ones, they sit nice and flat ontop of each other. You prefer the U.S carts? Really? Theyre a big waste of space imo. PAl / Jap carts are a far nicer design. And they stack fine when theyre in their original boxes :P
Super Famicom for the win. Nicer carts and better box art (except for maybe Castlevania IV which looks dodgy)

Its more for the shape and how easily they stack, I find the rounded SNES games rock a bit and its a little annoying. Everything else about our SNES rocks from controller to the console, but the carts I dunno they look cool, but its just that the are alot harder to keep steady.

(Scroll down to the SNES stuff)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v300/flamecondor/snesgames.jpg
And thats the whole game collection for my SNES starting from Right top and going down,
Saturday Night Slam Masters, Street Fighter Alpha 2 (NTSC), Weapon Lord, Wrestlemania Arcade Game, Chrono Trigger, Drakkhen
X-Men Mutant Apocalypse, Spider-Man & Venom Maximum Carnage, Captain America & The Avengers, Spider-Man & The X-Men, Secret of Mana, Ren & Stimpy Time Warp
Wild Guns, Super Star Wars, Super Empire Strikes Back, Super Return of the Jedi, Illusion of Gaia, Darius Twin
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (PAL), Turtles Tourney Fighter (I think this is a Japan game, but the text is all in English but I need a Converter, mmm on thinking this could be a copy, but it came with the SNES so meh), Samurai Showdown, Mortal Kombat 2, Killer Instinct, Turtles in Time.
Street Fighter 2, Chaos Engine, Jurassic Park, Super Scope 6, Spawn, Super Castlevania IV
Super Mario World, Super Mario Allstars, Plok, Yoshis Safari, Super mario Kart, Super International Circket
Parodius, NBA JAM, Starwing, Aero the Acrobat, Gokujou Parodius, Vortex.
Now yes I do have 2 versions of Street Fighter Alpha 2, but thats due to the NTSC one having a lockout chip than won't let my Converter work, but I'm stuck with the game till I can think of something to do with it, might EBay it one day.
I know to some people this isn't gonna be alot of games and there are plans to add to it soon, trying to work my way through the list of gmaes to get. Still what to get next, S.O.S., Pocky & Rocky, Rock N Roll Racing, Syndicate, E.V.O. or Earthbound, damn choices.

spopeblue
04-04-2008, 07:28 AM
Yeah, all that stuff did come from PA.
I have 4 other VMUs that have come my direction in various ways, all of which have broken battery covers.
I always take care with my stuff, but there is still a chance they could break.
Plus, what happens in 15 or 20 years time with ones that have been used? They could fail for any number of reasons. Brand new ones in boxes are much more likely to still work down the line.
I'm actually wondering if 6 is enough.
I do see what you are saying though, but it's not like I am buying them with the intention of on-selling. They are all for my collection only. And as with most of this retro stuff, you have to take the opportunity when it comes along - still kicking myself I missed out on the dirt cheap 32x deal all those years ago. Don't want it to happen again.

EDIT: Oh and I received that Oil Panic G&W I bought yesterday, it took an hour and a half to clean it inside and out (ie taking everything apart and cleaning the circuits) but now it's perfect. Had a few games and the memories came flooding back. I was even able to get $8.00 back from the seller for all of the time it took cleaning and doing some small repairs to the game (it did have a sticker reading "$2.00, needs battery" on the front after all, so even after the $8.00 refund I think he still made a very tidy profit).

I've just bought another SNES console, except rather than my current vanilla one this one has a modified PAL/NTSC switch, a 50/60Hz switch and a widened cartridge slot so it's multi-region all at 60Hz baby! :D
Got a nice S-Video cable for it too. A shame my TV doesn't have an RGB input...
Games:
- Donkey Kong Country
- Donkey Kong Country 2
- Donkey Kong Country 3
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario All-Stars
- SMW2: Yoshi's Island
- Super Mario Kart (JAP)
I've just got to work on building my collection now. I'm starting from scratch after stupidly selling my primo SNES collection more than a decade ago to buy a PSX bundle.
Hey crappy, where do you buy your NTSC SNES games?

A while ago I dreamt that I'd be able to get my hands on a mint copy of Final Fantasy VII PAL and non platinum. Lord behold I walk into Cash Converters yesterday and pick one up for $9. This for me would culminate in having all my good luck line up in one line. Amazing. It was a really freaky day too.

Picked up another Dreamcast the other day.
Bought it as a bundle off ebay actually, so I finally have a copy of Sonic Adventure.
Also came with the DC gun and House of the Dead 2. I'll plug it in and try it out when I get bored of GTA IV.

Because A) You might have the revised N64 that doesnt even support s-video. B) Even if your PAL N64 works with s-video its likely to look HORRIBLE thanks to the PAL-NESS of it all.
The NTSC N64 looks better through s-video. Blurry never looked so clear.
The PAL N64 looks worse with s-video. Colours look terrible and the image is nasty (dont ask me why. But it just doesnt look noice)

It is a PAL 64. I bought it on March 1, 1997, so it's a launchie and should support S-Video? Disappointing to hear that it may suck though. I'll try it out soon. If I remember correctly the cable cost $6 or $7, so no big loss.

When anyone ever asked me what my favourite game of all time is, I would say Tempest 2000, every time, without hesitation. The game is near perfect. Flawless. A distillation of everything pure about video games in an immaculately presented game of shooting and psychedelia. Every time I return to it I know it is because the game is timeless, and not because of some rose coloured nostalgia.
A few years back, I belatedly heard of the sequel Tempest 3000 for the ill-fated Nuon Game System. Now, today, the Nuon I won on ebay has arrived, and now, there maybe a challenger to the crown. I won't be sleeping tonight.

btw, Stoney do you own Tempest 2000 for the Jaguar or the ported Saturn version?

The NGPC's and games are pretty cheap, especially if you care not for boxes. You spend more on postage than the actual stuff. The AES/MVS on the other hand... still there's always the NG-CD, if you can stand the long load times.

Was the NeoGeo Pocket Color popular? More so than the Wonderswan?
The Gameboy eventually killed off everything. Something the the amazingly successful Nintendo DS cant seem to duplicate. But thats got more to do with the current competition (PSP is the most successful handheld loser so far. Could do a lot better if SONY got their act together I reckon. I was gobsmached I had no idea she played games let alone had such good taste! I was so shocked I picked it up half expecting it to be a mirage. I questioned her "W-what is this?" She stated it was her favourite game from her teen years and that it helped her through an unforchent bout of insomia -possibly the cause actually- she said she loved it. She said though it has been a long time between plays and that if I wanted it I could have it. Being a good friend I said I would pay her $30 for it, a sum to this day I have still yet to pay.

Not really our place to say. Its between you guys.
If you dont reallly rate (want) the game then at least it would be going to a loving home.
Of course you could always list it on ebay and send stoney the link. If its not a hot commodity you'll soon know.
But $20 sounds reasonable to me. I admittedly know nothing about these games. Perhaps send him a photo with the game dangling over an open fire. Then demand $300 within 24 hours.

I assume both support s-video as well? I only ask because the original SNES did, but the SNES Jnr didnt. Not the first time Nintendo revised a home console and removed functionality (hello GCN and N64)

I am just a massive Sega fanboy. The only nintendo hardware I've ever owned have been handhelds. (GBC, GBA and now DS) Although I might still pick up a N64 at some stage.
To buy just a Jap Mega Drive would probably set you back around $50 or so I would think, plus delivery. I found these on ebay US, but there are a couple of places that just sell.
The difference between MD and MD2 apart from the size, is the original megadrive has a stereo headphone socket on the front.
The oz spec systems came only with an RF adapter, but you could buy a composite video connector as well.
I ended up buying a SCART adapter from the UK for it, which is great, because it has stereo audio plugs on it, and now it's plugged into my TV via component connectors.
There is no official support for s-video, afaik.
If I am just using the Mega Drive, I always use my MD2.
But when I have the 32x hooked up it goes into my original megadrive, it just seems to work better.
I don't know which one I would keep if I was only able to have one. Probably one of my original Mega Drives.

It's a Sharp SF-1 TV. They released them in Japan in 14" & 21" models. This is the 21".
It's like the NES TV they released in the US in the late 80s which really didn't take off (it was cheaper to buy a TV & a NES seperately), which is probably why it never got released outside Japan.
I've been after one for years, but I always get outbid on Ebay. Work bonus comes in sometime this month, so I have a bit of surplus on the way, the TV was there so I thought "why not?"

I think that's a decent deal. What I would've loved was a flat screen CRT. What connections is any are at the back. Also can you watch standard TV on it?

You can watch standard TV on it. Standard RCA connections in the back, though one is missing so I'll get it replaced when it gets here. The TV is NTSC though, so watching TV here is probably not going to be a fun option. It also has SNES AV out for hooking up to a normal TV (which is a bit wierd but oh well) as well as an expension slot (the one on the bottom of a normal SNES) on the back of the TV.

Looking back it seems the last time I reported my retro finds was September 2007. Time for an update I guess.
GoldenEye 007 (N64) - loose, JAP version, $8.00
StarFox 64 (N64) - loose, US version, $8.00
Bust-A-Move 3DX (N64) - complete, near mint, $25.00
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (SNES) - boxed, US version, $7.50
Virtua Racing (Saturn) - complete, JAP version, $19.95
Phantasy Star Online (DC) - sealed, free
Rocket Knight Adventures (SMD) - boxed, $5.00
Bust-A-Groove (PSX) - complete, $10.00
Whip Rush (SMD) - complete, $5.00
SNK Neo Geo Pocket-Sega Dreamcast Link Cable - loose, $6.00
And today:
Hustle Chumy (Sega SC-3000) - complete, free
Action Fighter (SMS) - complete, $5.00
Air Buster (Genesis) - boxed, $2.50
Gynoug (SMD) - complete, $2.50
Zombies (SMD) - boxed, $2.50

Star Wars: Rebel Assault (Sega CD) - complete, $2.50
Rayman (Saturn) - complete, $2.50

I guess a model 1 Sega Mega CD would be nice - and a working PC Engine.

Besides if beat'em up action is what you want on the GBA there's far better choices. River City Ransom EX. Double Dragon Advance. Hell Id even suggest TMNT (Ubisoft) before Id get to Final Fight Advance. Though I would get Final Fight before Gekido Advance.
Is there a good fighter on GBA? SFA3 is gimped due to button limitations of course, and Tekken is shit. Is KoF on GBA, if so, is it any good?

Agreed. But most people on eBay try and sell them for $500 (on ebay.com.au atleast) second hand...
Slight note: If you get a sealed, new copy of RS, and you unseal and unnew it, you deserve to be verbally thrashed and beaten symbolically.

It's more legitimate, and obviously you don't collect Sega stuff so it's hard to comprehend.
Look at the RS dispute in accounting terms (say we bought it for $500 from Play-Asia, assuming it's value in the condition is $500):
Purchase RS for $500 - you lose $500 yet you still have it as a financial asset. You break the seal and play it - it is now a second hand item and its value has been reduced to $200.
The consumer's total proprietorship has reduced by $300 by using the item. While if you got a pirated copy of the internet for $0, you would still have the $500 assest and still have the pleasure of playing the (supposedly, I think Ikaruga is) the greatest vertical shooter made.
But it all comes down to oppinion and political correctness, lets leave it at that.

I don't collect games for monetary reward. Fair enough some people see them as an investment, for me its just a pastime; a hobby. I'll collect what I like regardless of financial value, rarity, or quality. I collect what I enjoy playing.
If I had the money that I could justify buying RS for $500, hell yeah I'd play it.
Old Stoney
08-06-2008, 01:39 PM
Yeah, I've opened all my sealed games to play them. I don't care about resale because I'm not going to sell them. The only real reason for owning a game is getting to look at the manual and disc art and occassional free goodies. If you leave it sealed up, you never get to look at the goodness on the inside.

Well I also consider collecting Sega stuff as a hobby, but I just showed that to point out the monetary side of things. When it is possible to avoid I don't see why you would kill off financial assetts like that. When it's avoidable... and I would also buy it if I had the right amount of money to justify it. If I only had $500 I wouldn't buy it... nor $5000. $50,000 is another story.
Old Stoney, we're talking about retro stuff though hence this thread being in Retroactive. New stuff... well opening it makes sense.

I'm not sure i'd ever trust a retro game that is factory sealed unless I bought it new myself or off of a trusted person who did.
Who's to say someone hasn't picked up an opened copy and shrink wrapped it to double or triple its resale value on ebay?
Hell, maybe that's not even an RS disk inside but in fact the third disc of Desperate Housewives Season 2?
Lazlow

Old Stoney, we're talking about retro stuff though hence this thread being in Retroactive. New stuff... well opening it makes sense.
Well for starters I think Stoney was referring to retro games. You can still buy new sealed games off other collectors. Secondly your last statement only serves to contradict your stance... all games become retro eventually, who's to say that new XBOX360 game won't be a sought after collector's item 10 years down the road?
When it is possible to avoid I don't see why you would kill off financial assetts like that.
Because I don't see them as financial assets, I see them as games to be played and enjoyed. I don't build a collection, with plans to retire on its worth.

Whether you see them as assets or not they still are...
"who's to say that new XBOX360 game won't be a sought after collector's item 10 years down the road?"
I was thinking that, but you generally don't buy games new with the intention of it being a retro collectors item in the future.

I didn't say they weren't. Their monetary value just has no bearing on me.
I'm with Lazlow. I've unsealed many games in my day, although none of them valuable. If I had a sealed game in my collection which was worth thousands, you can be sure I would have sold it and spent the money on something more important.
Game collectors seem are a strange breed, probably why I'm don't come here very often anymore.

Id 'unseal' Radiant Silvergun. As a collectable it aint much of an investment anyway. Buy RS sealed for $500 now. Maybe sell it for $600 a few years later. Woopie!! That's making your money work for you!!!
I dont mind 'un-sealers'. Its the guys who throw out the boxes that erk me. Cause those dudes are often destroying something beautiful (like nice box art). Taking a game out outs factory seal is more akin to getting your wang out. i.e if you have something fun, get it out and play with it!!

I was talking about retro. I bought one of the 2008 re-releases of Border Down for $200 and I opened it up, even though I already had the limited edition Border Down already open. I can't remember what else, but I'm sure there have been other rare DC shooters and games I've opened. Trigger Heart LE was one of them I think, and again, already had access to the vanilla version.

^ I agree with you on the boxart. I find it strange that quite often covers go missing. I had a funny case when a friend of mine bought FFVII. His disc 3 was majorly scratched and some of the instruction manual was pretty worn out. What he did was shop around and basically replace his damaged disc and manual with a better version. It's near mint, and he kept the mint version then on sold the slightly damaged version. Disc 3 still worked and the scratches were only minor, but he just wanted one in better condition.
I take care of things as best as possible, but still use them. Anything more is pedantry imo.

Tekken 2.
It's not platinum, is the first time I have seen a pre-platinum edition! That said it's in pretty poor nick, the case is cracked, scratched and the spines box-art is missing. Although I only paid for Tekken 2, when I opened the case to examine the disc I was plesently surprised to notice that someone had cramed a platinum edition of Tekken in with it! Will go great with my PS1 joystick!
Hard Boiled.
It's a funny game, I hadn't heard of it before I bought it. I originally picked it up thinking it had something to do with the John Woo film of the same name, wrong. It is in fact based on the Frank Miller and Geof Darrew comic making it possibly just as awesome! Haven't played it yet, but yea' looks like a wipeout knock off.
Darkstalkers 3.

I've got Sonic 3D for the Saturn. I'll sell it to you if you want.
The Saturn version has greater detail in the backgrounds, CD quality soundtrack by Richard Jacques and the special stage is revamped version of the special stage from Sonic 2 using polygons instead of sprites and, I think, was made by Sonic Team and not by Travellers Tales (as the rest of the game was).
If you have the analogue pad, it's a bit more comfortable to play as well.
Saturn version absolutely smokes the MD, but as Ezri it's still a flawed game. There's no escaping that.
My copy is in excellent condition, if you were interested.

Not exactly retro but I picked up a Gamecube with control and memory card + SSBM and two shit games for $62. I already have a Gamecube and SSBM but figured I'd get it so I can play SSBM at my girlfriends house, also an extra control and memory card always comes in handy.

Analogue pad is not essential, just a little less wear on the thumb. Kinda like how NiGHTS doesn't need it but it, oh, does it feel good with.
Anyway, make an offer in this really old HAH (http://www.hyper.com.au/forums/showthread.php?t=5792) thread. It says $30, but make whatever offer you want.
Just recently bought a loose cart of Castlevania Adventure for the Gameboy, and a boxed copy of Kings Quest IV for the Amiga (Because it was a boxed copy, with the proper disks and manual. And for some reason, a Sierra Hint Book viewer card, but no hint book. Aww....)

They also had Street Fighter III: Double Impact (DC) but I passed on that considering I already have Third Strike on Xbox and I don't like it a lot anyway (at least not compared to other SF's).

Well that parry system and new cast certainly puts a spanner in the works when you're accustomed to everything that came before :/
I'm slowly growing to third strike, but my love of blocking mid air in alpha 3 was tossed to the wolves until I got the extra settings to change it.
I should totally hit ebay up for sfa3 though, the gba copy just doesn't really cut it.

Same price I believe. They were both marked $39.95 but they were having 50% of all 'retro' stock storewide.

The Amstrad Mega PC was made by Amstrad & the Teradrive by IBM, BUT the big difference is the Mega PC doesn't allow the Megadrive & PC to be used at the same time, where the Teradrive does. If I'm not mistaken it is possible to use the Teradrive as an SDK, running code on native Megadrive hardware.
Don't quote me on that last point...

It's been a while, but I decided to start collecting old Atari ST Psygnosis games. First one I picked up was a mint in box, all manuals etc copy of Barbarian

I'm a huge fan of the Psygnosis box designs, which typically sport amazing art.

But the Palace version (can't really call it "version" as it's a completely different game) of Barbarian was a better game. Just my 2c :)

Is that the same game that was on the Commodore 64? Kind of like a one on one battle with awesome execution moves like the 'Web of Death'? If it is, then awesome! The spinning decapitation move made that game

Went into a pawn shop today.
Final Fantasy VIII, Chase the Express and Music for PSX - $10
Final Fantasy VIII is missing disc 3 which is a shame but at the price its not unexpected.
Also picked up a couple of Mega CD games Dracula Unleashed and Road Avenger for ten bucks.
Later at GameTraders I picked up a Playstation multi-tap, Soul Blade and Vagrant Story no box or manual for 24 bucks.
It's depressing I can't find these things in good condition but still meh'.
I would've left FFVIII. It's a pretty common game and you will easily come across a complete copy soon enough. Hell, it's not even a premium eBay item.

Saturn (console only) - $5
2x official controllers - $7
Super Famicom (console only) - $5
I need some advice as to powering this.
I found a power cable that seems to fit fine (7.5vdc) but I'm scared to turn it on in case it fries the SNES.
Does anyone know if it will work, or will I have to import a Super Famicom power cable and use a step down converter?
Super Famicoms do NOT use the same power supply as Australian SNES's. They may power it, though you risk causing severe damage to your system.
SFC's use a DC power source, as such, any 9V DC power supply (that delivers at least 1A/1000mA) will do you fine. I have found that the Sega Master System and first model Mega Drive power supplies do the trick.
Alternatively, you can just buy one from any Dick Smith/Tandy.

hmm... I just tried 4 different SMS/MD power plugs and all of them failed to power the SFC on. I think that it might be buggered.

I did initially, but I found I was consistently getting this horrible garbled vertical line through the centre of my display. Using a DC power supply fixed the issue.

I could never get mine to work, & Tandy/Dick Smith were no help. I took the SFC in & they couldn't match the wattage (which is according to them "strange")
I bought an SFC AC adapter from Ebay & it works fine.
Super Famicom's are DC 10v 850ma Negative centre polarity.
Sega Mega Drive model 1/Sega Mega CD model 2 power supplies do the trick.
