I got these 2 in a auction from ebay last night

Strikers 1945

God knows what happened to the cover of Strikers 2 but it was $34 including shipping for the both of them so I can't complain.

Get a PAL saturn and then an action replay, that is what I have. Unless you understand JAP and can therefore get all the common games like Daytona and VON and play them just as well in JAP.

Same goes for Famicom, just that I don't have one :( I'm after a SNES+converter or SFC though :)

Haha. It was a massive "Why not?" purchase for me and all I knew about it was that it was an FPS. I've only briefly played it but it's not nearly as bad as I expected it to be. Graphically it's kinda like Doom but I find it awesome that it has strafing in it.

As you may or may not know I begun a sell off of all my old systems (prob 3-4 years ago), and back I thought 'hey, all I have that's retro is my ps1', but that was cool, until I went to work last thursday.

My boss gave me, for free, at no charge, a sega saturn with one controller, a nintendo 64 and a megadrive 2. I thought that was nice of him =)

This morning it was toast, coffee and theme park! (usually just toast, coffee and good morning america) *sigh*

I've been after a master gear!!!!1111oneeleven.

I have a game gear. Not the greatest handheld but it's by Sega so it deserves to be praised. My game gear was one of my first retro purchases, though I think it was before I said "this is better than collecting pokemon cards". Though I would like to note that I said "pokemon cards are ghey" long before I said... fap fap fap. Got it boxed for $15 at a garage sale. Box isn't in top shape, the foldy-over-the-side flap is gone, with the end it should be on scuffed on all four edges. Console itself is great with the awesome SEGA SPORT promo material!

Don't love my N64 enough to justify paying $20+ for something which will marginally increase the graphic capabilities.

More goodies from the markets:

2x N64 controllers - both sticks as new BUT the guy cut off the cables that connect to the console (because he wanted the wire inside, some people have no brain seriously). Bought purely to swap over the sticks to my other controllers.
Goldeneye N64 instruction manual
Blue Gameboy Pocket

The lot for $10.00. :)

DK64 and LoZ:MM were the only two games that required (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_Pak#Required_to_play) it just to play (and all dd64 games...)

Alot of games alowed various minor changes with the pack (Pod Racer allowed a higher resolution for instance), although some, like Perfect Dark, required it to get the most out of the game.

If you can pick them up for $20 at GT's, i'm sure you'd find it cheaper elsewhere.

It's more that I would like it to be able to play PAL games in 50Hz because some PAL games screw up badly when you scale up the refresh rate. I have a Samsung HD LCD, so 'age' is not really an issue. :-P

Got the gen-x dual station on the way should be here tuesday so that should be sweet, hopefully the controllers are decent since it doesn't allow real controllers. Ezri

The Genesis is not entirely region free. Most games released prior to 1993 are universal, be they PAL, US or JAP. From 1993 onwards, security lockouts started being used and most post-1993 MD/GEN games are region locked. EA games are largely region free though.

Master System's are completely region free, however.

I dunno in the early 90s I went to canada and the states and one of the things I brought back was a genesis copy of world heroes (a bad port of a bad game but I was excited) and I had to rent a converter just to play it and I remember that being very bulky and awkward. I reckon I should be sweet with the clone hardware but if there's something that doesn't work I desperately wanted to play I wouldn't be opposed to picking up an MD or genesis, dunno about a japanese MD though a lot of those games are very expensive.

Anyway I've got something incredibly cool on the way besides the gen-x, should arrive later on in the week I'll post pics then. Nah it's a dead-set run by one guy ghetto looking operation, it was awesome. I found it by accident when I had an hour to kill way out in pine rivers. There were way more old games then new ones but I was hard up for impulse cash when I found the place so I couldn't get anything. Old consoles were stacked on top of each other 4-5 feet high & the bloke at the counter didn't even acknowlege us. I thought places like this didn't exist anymore so hopefully they're still open haha.

Surprisingly, I got my gen-x dual station today (thought it would arrive tomorrow). Interesting system for sure, the controllers are nicely made & certainly better then the ones that come with the retro duo so that's lucky I suppose.

I only have a few pal mega drive games to test until I can find my genesis world heroes but I got some interesting results. Aladdin is region locked to pal systems (lol) so it didn't work, there's a switch on the back of the machine that changes the region to overseas or japan so I suppose overseas means American. Thunder Force II worked fine & didn't have any black borders. I don't have a pal MD to check (sold mine to a mate like a dickhead) but I think it might do the PAL games that work in 60hz.

Rolling Thunder 2 worked after I cleaned it twice and displayed in full screen as well, but the controls were incredibly unresponsive and it skipped right past the character select screen, not letting me choose. Might have something to do with the mode button since the gen-x doesn't have one, I've read about games that need the mode button to boot up not working on this system so any games that don't allow the 6 button controller won't work on the system. It's still cool to have though, love the MD in all its forms especially the harsh-arse sound chip.

Yeah although there wasn't as much stuff as I remember and I swear there was a much larger stack of consoles. I did drop by there today and picked up a snes pad and parodius on the saturn which didn't work so I'll have to go back. Everything was very expensive but lots of the carts are boxed and everything, and it's really nice to see so much shelf space for old games. So gamerz was a bit of a letdown, I was stoned when I found it the first time so I glamorised it a bit.

On the way home though I stopped by a 2nd hand shop and it didn't look like anything was there but there were a few mega drive games at the counter & one genesis game - sonic 2 for 5 bucks so I asked for that, and they pulled out a shitload of ex-rental snes games from a little cupboard under the counter, all 5 bucks as well. They didn't have eftpos and I didn't want to get any more cash out so I just picked up 40 bucks worth and got my woman a tea set she liked. I'll have to go back there though there were some great games I didn't pick up. So out of that I got Parodius, Twinbee, The Firemen, Contra 3, & 2 American SNES carts World Heroes and Kikikaikai. Got an action replay as well. The people at the 2nd hand shop had a mega drive with columns hooked up they were really cool.

I didn't do too badly out of today non-working disc aside. At least I got a working version of Parodius. The week's not over yet though still got one more bit of hardware to arrive.

The snes pad works on the retro duo but only in the 2nd player port, it's moot though since I want it for fighters and like the 2p side better anyway. I took a pic of the new clone systems next to a wii to illustrate the tiny size of them, great stuff.

Sounds like Gamebizz in South Australia. The guy bought out a HEAP of MD & SNES games when retailers didn't want them anymore, so they sell brand new 16 bit games. They ARE at brand new prices I might add, but if you want a game mint in box with book that's the place to go. Dunno how much "new" stock he has left as I haven't been there in a while.

You bet I love the fireman game :) I've played the ps1 version and this is much better imo. Responsive controls and an interesting theme, it's very nice indeed.

I've got some new stuff, first up is a master system II with a power light, reset button, pause button on the controller, composite & s-video plugs, 50/60hz switch & mark III switch. It's been over 15 years since I owned a master system, sold mine to cashies when the rf lead starting going bad so this one is a nice way to get back into it. Came with Sonic 1 & 2 as well as action fighter which is pretty cool for spy hunter fans (*raises hand*).

I had to go back to gamerz to exchange the faulty game and it wasn't even open, had to go round the back & get the **** to open up then did the exchange for a $35 copy of Land of Illusion but what the hell, it's in very nice shape and that was almost my favourite master system game.

On the way hope stopped by for another round at that 2nd hand shop and grabbed Sonic 1 MD, F-Zero, Final Fight 2, Mega Man X 2, Super Street Fighter 2, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Aero the Acrobat & Shaq Fu all $5. Can't wait to play shaq fu again ;p those tiny sprites and shit controls and some alright music (which is probably worse on snes I usually like MD music better with multiplatform games), I have great memories of this game. Anyway pics below & I'm pretty happy with that, going to spend an hour cleaning all that stuff then I'll have a kick arse gaming session.

I listen to harsh music in general and the rougher sound of the MD is much better for my tastes. Sure enough I booted up shaq-fu this arvo and the music was much worse then the MD, all the atmosphere was gone. Seriously in just about every multi platform game I've played the snes sounds overly clean, pompous and fruity compared to the MD tunes. Cleaner is not better in my book. Should note I'm only talking about the music though.

The one I went to was about half an hours drive away but I did 70-80 most of the way so it didn't take as long. I always make note of any 2nd hand shops I go by and check in eventually. Some places that look like they don't have anything end up having a stash of games somewhere and even op shop warehouses have games.

The box had been kept on the shelf in a hard plastic cover, so it's in smicko condition and the cartridge has no ugly video shop engravings/stickers/texta. Though I do prefer SEGA over Nintendo mostly, the x and z gen (whatever NES/Master and SNES/SMD were) were ripped up by Nintendo. Master system really sucked, SNES rocked. But the Saturn and Dreamcast are superior to the N64 and Gamecube respectively :)

Well I think you're crazy for saying sonic 2 & streets of rage 2 are better then the third entries in those series given the advancements made in the depth of the gameplay but I do understand it's a personal preference and it's pretty much the same thing here with me & the MD tunes. I listen to acts from the actual noise genre sometimes, I don't like 'nice' music for the most part. Don't have a heart attack but I think the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack is brilliant. It's filthy, harsh and repetitive just like the game.

In any case I haven't heard anything on the snes that's come close to SOR2 or Sonic 3 for good tunes but I've played way more MD games then snes ones so only time will tell. Nintys little jingle-like things aren't going to do much to change that though that's for sure. If I can find more snes games with music like Super Aleste or that doujin hentai slideshow thing then I could possibly be a bit less negative towards it.

But I'm sure that we can all agree that Shaq-Fu is shit no matter what system you're playing on.

Haha yeah it was even worse then I remember. I'll have to pick up the MD version sometime as well :)

I've unpacked the SNES and have been playing DKC a bit lately (in lovely 60Hz), and I still think that some of the music and ambient effects in the game are incredible, even 14 years after it was released. It really showed graphically and aurally how far the console could be pushed.

I do also have a special spot for SoR2 and Revenge of the Shinobi's soundtracks though; some of the MD's best

I am not sure when I said SoR2 is better than SoR3 (you might be thinking of someone else?) as I have never even played SoR3!

Sonic 3 on the other, blows chunks. It's a very pretty looking game, but the level design is horrendous (too many unavoidable deaths than can only be overcome through trial-and error) and it's too short.

What I was thinking of was hyper issue 178 with the quote in the sonic 2 bit of the reader top 50 "the best 2d sonic title". I suppose since I've played through sonic 2 only last week I can agree the levels are designed a bit better but they are pretty much the same sort of levels, hill one, water one, one with lots of bumpers and annoying stuff, one with moving terrain bits etc but Sonic 3 & Knuckles with the save spots, 3 shields, character selection & abilities, tunes like the hydro city, flying battery, ice cap & boss theme & very nice presentation pushes it over imo. The SOR thing I must have got from another top games article that had one of your quotes in the SOR2 bit but if you've never played the third that would explain it. Apologies for not being entirely correct in all of that. For the record I'm not playing devils advocate or anything, there's just lots of stuff that's objectively pretty poor (like the MD sound chip) that I find lots of good in. I've always been that way for better or worse.

Moving along with some new purchases, hit up 2 op shop warehouses in what could only be described as a spectacular failure, if I was smart about it I could have gone back to the one with the $2 games, it closed down a few days ago, would love to know where the stock went but I still managed to find some decent stuff in Cashies and Gametraders, neither cheap or expensive really.

Got the american super gameboy for $20 shipped from ebay it's in very nice condition and works well.

Sakura Wars was $20 as well in nice condition with a spine card and everything so japanese heavy or not I can see what that's all about.

Landstalker with a torn label was $15, won't matter 'till I get a pal MD again since it's another bloody region locked game.

Wario Land II and Street Fighter Alpha were $10 each and I'm a true dickhead because I was only reading the other night that the super gameboy won't play GBC-only carts. Oh well time to get a GBPC for the third time.

Power Strike for $8. Love Compile shooters, they're all so damn good.

World of Illusion, King of Fighters 95, Ninja Gaiden Shadow, Turrican, Solar Striker and Motocross Maniacs were all $5. Yay for kof 95, that port is great not quite NGPC standard but as good as say Garou Densetsu on the game gear. Wish I'd have had that for my GB back in the day instead of killer instinct, MK and SFIIWW.

Finally, ordered a japanese MD copy of one of my all time favourite kusoge - Deadly Moves/Power Athlete. I just chucked it in the cart with a play-asia order ended up being $13. Should get that on monday.

Panasonic.

I was just about to leave the cashies but thought I'd have one more look in case I missed something. They kind had it hidden away. It was actually $19 for the unit and $9 for the gun. The woman I was dealing with threw in demolition man for free saving me a fiver.

wow you found it that cheap at cashies?!! all the cashies around me are RIP OFFs - toasters NES $145!! thats an extreme example but still its dam rare to get something for a reasonable price. yeah 3dos are sweet I need to get me one sometime soon, I managed to get a Road Rash for $6 at a gametraders a while back but have no system to play it on.

Bought a Sega Saturn lot from the markets today.

Sonic 3D
Virtua Cop 2
Mighty Hits
Virtua Cop
Baku Baku
Clockwork Knight
Sega Ages Vol.1
Virtua Racing
Theme Park
Manx TT Superbike
Pebble Beach Golf Links

Sega Rally case and manual only (no game disc)
Daytona USA case only (no game disc or manual)

All above games are complete with case and manual, and are Australian PAL versions.

All for $40. I would have gotten a complete Daytona USA Championship Edition as well for an additional $5 but someone else grabbed it seconds before I did. :(

Just need a console to play them on now...

Went to a pawn shop afterwards and found a 58-in-1 GB cart for $7.50. That place had the $600 3D0 package and I did think about going back in a few months and trying to talk them down a bit. Would be a lot of effort selling most of the games off but I always wanted a 3D0.

Lazlow (at some stage - he may of flogged it) had a PAL DC with a busted GD-ROM drive. You could try and get that off of him and swap their power supplies around. I've been wanting to do that but now that Dreamcasts are worth around $100 by themselves - it really isn't economical.

22 watts is a pretty low rating.

This will easily do the trick: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-fl-77-2-49-en-15-stepdown-70-1rl8.html

Not sure how much postage would be - could be up to $20AUD. Only other thing you will need is an adapter to convert it's UK plug to to Australian -$10 incl. post.
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-121-49-en-70-i1.html

Of course, getting a PAL DC PSU board is the MUCH neater option (and possibly cheaper depending on Laz's price :P). Of course, if you ever get other import consoles down the track that don't take universal power supplies this could come in handy (although only Saturn, Dreamcast and 1st/3rd generation PS2 spring to mind).

Can I simply replace the PSU with a PAL one and it will work fine?

Ezri
07-12-2008, 08:57 PM
Indeed it will. The voltage on the mainboard is identical regardless of what region. The only difference is that a JAP/US PSU can accept 100-120V and the PAL one 220-240V. They output the same on the mainboard side.

Same modification can be done on the Sega Saturn as well.

Today at a different cashies I found a 7800 for $20 without a power supply. I tested it with my own power supply and it didn't work so I returned it. I did grab all the 7800 games they for sale though at $7.95 each - Crossbow, Galaga, Ikari Warriors (woo-hoo!) Ms. Pac-man and Pole Position II.

What an amazing price for a Mega CD. I've always wanted one but haven't ever seen one for sale. Hope I can find a good deal like that one day.

I went back to cashies in the valley last week and picked up Mazin Wars Boxed on the mega drive for $12 as well as another 100-in-1 GBA cart which is the same thing as the other one I've got with NES games on it.

I had the incredibly stupid idea to go to Chermside last night for the 24-hour shopping thing and after an hour of wading through a sea of human misery I hit up Gametraders for a Dreamcast VGA box for $20 Sagaia/Darius on Master System & Thunder Force IV both boxed & $10. When I was just leaving I saw all these loose carts 2 for $10 so I grabbed Power Blade and Robo Warrior for NES.

I played Robo Warrior back in the day but could never remember the title and when I saw the cart sitting there I just had this feeling that it was the game and sure enough popped it in when I got home and it was the one. It's like a combo of Bomberman and Zelda or something but better then both imo. That's the highlight for me, it was very exciting to play again.

Correct. Half the fun is trying to find songs in your collection which create the hardest levels. It's not always obvious either. Classical music and children's music can provide some serious heartache, while metal is sometimes smooth sailing.

Thunder Force V, Silhouette Mirage and Final Fantasy Chronicles for PSX (all NTSC-US)
Hey You, Pikachu - complete, as new (N64)

It was mine, the laser is dead.

The one that's actually in it now is a "replacement" one I bought of eBay, shipped from Canada, but with Chinese packaging. Its fits too loosely on the drive arms so the threads have no friction and it doesn't move when it tries to read a disc.

So I don't even know if its a legit GD-ROM laser because the box had a DVD logo on it. The unit itself was a dead set replica though.

Just bought a Dreamcast, $100 with one controller and Soul Caliber.

Then bought another 2 controllers ($25 each) with Gears of War 2 trade in. I then realised you can simply download the games and they work in your dreamcast, no chipping required.

:O :O :O :O $50!?!?!?!

Was that for all of them? Do they usually go that much on ebay? I might start picking up things like that. Maybe the buyer just really wanted one of the games ey...

Mint condition (and I mean, sealed in the original box with two inches of dust on it) of:
X-Wing Collector's Edition (the CD version) and Archimedean Dynasty,

Both for twenty dollars... Me happy :D

Though I've read using burnt CDs for games shortens the life of the laser in the drive.

This is why I have two Dreamcasts - although the older one is dying.

Time for a third methinks.

Well, not all games will make that much. For just the playstation games $50 profit because of CTR, that went for $20 and the others went for $10ish. I got Fable lost chapters for $9 and sold it for $40.

Mostly disney games and of course the populsar such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Croc. Rare or hard to find games go very well, like Bust a move etc.

Avoid sport games like tony hawk or tekken, dont go well. Try to get the games for $5 or less so you have more profit.

Basically pick a system or two and really know the value of games. So my gf know Xbox and Playstation and Gameboy well, while I know PS2, GC and others like Megadrive.

Good Luck finding some profit

Only system I really know the value of is Dreamcast, and the damn values keep going up and down up and down. And I'm yet to find any non-internet buys for it that were worth getting.

I've picked up a bit of stuff in the last week:

Gamecube - $25 with controller & leads.
Game Boy Player - $40 after shipping, great condition & not even a scratch on the startup disc.
PN.03 - Got off ebay $24 should be here at the end of the week.

Boxed Mega Drive games $6.50 each: Toejam & Earl, Another World, Subterrania, Bubble & Squeak, Warlock, Wiz & Liz.

Loose MD carts $5 each: Mick & Mack jpn cart & What I think is that RPG Soleil, hard to tell from the font but I hired it out back in the day and enjoyed it, pretty sure it's what I'm thinking of.

MD convertor $10, no clue what I'm going to do with it but looks nice, can't hurt to have.

MD pad $15 Snes style but looked like it might be good for the master system.

Picked up complete copies of both Mario Tennis (N64) and Mischief Makers for $53 inc. shipping from eBay. Both boxes are factory fresh and I'm pretty happy to have these games on my shelf again.

Also picked up a complete copy of Arkanoid (SNES) from the PALGN forums for $15, as well as a minty-fresh copy of Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (DC) for $17. Loved that game.

Is that the model that there were 1800 of or 200 of? I think the red one is the 1800... a blue one went on ebay months ago (maybe even a year :S ) in Melbourne for about $800 AUD.

;) how much did that one set you back?

Also does anyone know why TCK is banned?

The one that was for sale awhile ago on eBay from Melbourne wasn't in the best of nick and was missing things from the package. (Missing cap from the VMU).

And it was the red version (Claire).

I got the Claire version also. Cost me just abit over 1k to get it from the U.S. But it's brand new and unused. Very happy.

Was looking at getting the S.T.A.R.S unit, which is the blue one but that sold for around 4k Australian, so it was abit steep for me.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is it exactly? A Jap DC bundled with RE:CV?

Speaking of DCs, is there anyway to get a better output quality than composite AV? I know they released Scart cables for Euro TVs but that's no good down here, and PAL DCs just hate S-Video (at least mine does; my S-Video cables output a worse quality than the standard composites).

There's apparently a VGA cable, some games don't work with it.

get a VGA box, you can force every game i think to output on VGA but some look shocking like any of the capcom 2d fighters.
Games like shenmue 2 look great on my lcd through VGA, the texture quality is incredible.

I was playing around with my VGA box for the DC the other week and the games really do look incredible on the LCD, comparable to and possibly even better than a ps2 through component & I swear Karous looks a bit better then it does on the Wii Milestone Collection, could just be my system bias influencing those opinions though.

I stopped by cashies a week or two ago and picked up a bunch of MD games for 50c each. I mentioned that I just wanted cases so the salesman marked them all down, pretty cool even though normal carts only fit in diagonally on those EA boxes, at least I can pick up a loose copy of Skitchin' sometime now. One day I'll actually clean them up and print out some covers for my loose carts. The low price does well to counteract the shame of owning 5 copies of Altered Beast and those EA sports games.

Grabbed some GB/GBC games as well while I was there: Crazy Bikers, Duke Nukem, Bionic Commando & Oddworld all $5 each, Gargoyles Quest for $12.

Picked up a boxed Power Strike II for $20, it's in pretty good shape so no complaints there.

Finally grabbed a gamecube/playstation convertor but it's moot as I've gotten used to the GC pad and actually like it to some degree. It was only around $10 or so.

Weird to see tck banned, bad trade maybe? I can't believe that fuc**r got the Gamecube/GB player setup for less then half the price I did, I thought I did alright but not $26 alright.

Got some new stuff recently, $5 each for the MD and SMS games except Ninja Gaiden which was $7. $8 each for the GC Sonics, $15 each for the JPN gameboy games Samurai Shodown and Gradius & finally the most expensive item, an 8MB GC memory card at $20 :( but at least I found one.

Today I got Robotech The Macross Saga GBA & Aerostar GB, $15 each but they're boxed w/manual so that's alright. Picked up a Saturn RGB cable for $10 as well.

My nephew gave me his old Nintendo 64, SNES and NES this week.

The 64 has no controller, so I've ordered one.

The SNES has no controllers, power cable or AV cable. Still scouting around for those.

The NES has one controller but no power cable or AV cable.

He gave me all his games, but not many of them were exciting. Plus his copy of Duck Hunt was sans gun. Mario Kart on the 64 and Dr Mario on the SNES (I think) are the ones I am most looking forward to playing. I've also got a copy of Perfect Dark with extra memory on order.

So, I've got a bit of work to do before I have myself some retro Nintendo console fun.

I've also been told that it would be madness to hook these systems up to an HD TV. What do others think?

IIRC, the N64 AV cables work on the SNES.

Yeah, they do. I took the cable from the N64 and it fits in the SNES.

I've gotten the SNES working. For some reason the N64 and NES are both receiving power, and their AV cords are fine, but they're not firing up.

Looks like the insides may be crook.

I also got a cheap low def LCD TV so I can set everything up in a room that's not our main telly room. That way I don't have to fight hubby for use of the main TV if I want to play.
