Well, I'm in the mood for Dreamcast.
I'm abit pissed off cos I just missed out on some Dreamcast Twin sticks with Virtua On and 13 other games!
Anyways, I just thought I make this thread to Appreciate the Dreamcast. IMO it is the best Console created, And my personal fav.
I just enjoyed the sheer amount of great games and arcade ports!
I'd have to say my most memorable moment would be getting my Dreamcast and booting up Sonic Adventure for the first time. Did I have a ball, 8 hours straight!
Well, What's your Dreamcast Memory? Launch story? Fav game?

Just bought a DC (for the second time, had one at launch but sold it) with Shenmue, Blue Stinger (ugh), Sega Rally, Soul Calibur, Power Stone and Tomb Raider 5. Also got 52 games on the way, which is the bullshit sickness to say the least.
It was extremely underrated as a console in Aus, but so many games from 3rd parties got delayed and cancelled. Sonic Adventure has to be the best platformer i'd ever played also and the original Jet Grind Radio is just a pure artistic innovator. The console itself wasn't really impressive (except with the VM which was extremely cool), but all the developers were really free to be creative on the machine and did things no one else would do at the time, which was excellent, but that kind of put it into more of a niche market.

Dreamcast is a fekking legend, no doubt about it. I bought mine at launch, got there about an hour before the shop opened...I was the only one there. Anyway, I army rolled under the shutter on the stores opening, quickly paid for my stuff and bolted home to check it out. Shame I had no games to play apart from Blue Stinger, damn OZ launch! Still, that game was pretty funny at the time - who could forget Dogs Bowser! :P
The DC days were easily the highlight of my gaming career, my house was 5 minutes from my College so every lunchtime/break myself and a bunch of mates would go to my house, plug the DC into the big lounge room telly and play Soul Calibur, Tech Romancer, Virtua Tennis 2k2, Power Stone 2 (the desert stage was replayed FOREVER 4 player) and many other classics. Mum hated ppl in the lounge playing games and she would often return home from work for lunch...Can't tell you the amount of times I had to throw everything in the cabinet, bail everyone out the back door and act all innocent! :P
I can't explain it but the games on DC had a certain magic missing from a lot of games today...Where are the brilliant multiplayer games like Powerstone, MvC2 and Tech Romancer today??
'Originals' in my collection now:
-Ikaruga (ntsc-j)
-Mars Matrix (ntsc-us)
-Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram (ntsc-us - wish I could find someone who wants to play this!!)
-Soul Calibur (pal)
Pretty much only play it for Ikaruga these days (I think I will play that game til I die) but can't wait to get into VOOT when some bastard will play me.

As Lobster knows I went Dreamcast crazy a year or so ago. Imported an NTSC system. Ended up with 25 original games, most japanese :)
Then I sold them all.....um
The Dreamcast was (is) a great system. It definitely deserved more attention and success. But I wouldnt say its my fav console of thsi current generation. Id put it 3rd, just above XBOX. Hee hee.
First memory of the DC was seeing Soul Calibur playing at a games shop. My lord. That game was miles ahead of everything else at the time. Even now its a thing of beauty.
Here are some of the games I bought and loved (briefly). I do miss my DC but I dont regret selling it. The money went towards buying more games that will be extremely cherished. The DC was impressive. But I couldnt help feel I was trying to recapture a gaming moment well and truely past. And it's hard to get nostalgic for something you'd not experienced previously. Ha.
REZ - Though the DC version runs at 30fps & with less detail than the PS2 game, it also has none of the unsightly alaising present in the PS2 version. Yep. DC was an intelligently built machine. Emotion chip my arse!! :)
Ikaruga - DC port is the superior home version. Nice cover art.
Bangai-O - Improved over the N64 original. More Treasure and another game cover I was fond of.
Border Down - underratted. I loved thsi game. Nice soundtrack. A great side scroller. The G-Rev. team behind this game also helped out with Treasure's Gradius V.
Zero Gunner 2 - solid arcade heliocopter action.
Last Blade 2 - nice port of the neo geo classic. Great cover art.
Garou Mark of the Wolves - More from Playmore/ neo geo. My fav 2D fighter.
Soul Calibur - possibly 3D fightings finest hour. All games released since feel like mere 'tweaking'.
Jet Set Radio - Started a cel shading trend.
Shenmue - a snapshot of gaming history. Memerable. Flawed. Out dated and brilliant.
Powerstone - why hasnt the PS2 seen a port of this? Great game. Powerstone 2 was a step in the wrong direction imo.
LeMans 24 hours - more than 6 cars on screen in one race. Real time weather and day/night effects. Still cant manage this in GT4. Go figure.
Crazy Taxi - okay at the time. Cant stand it now.
Project Justice - aka Rival Schools 2. LOVEd thsi game. Wacky fighting.
DOA2 - cleaner looking version compared to PS2.

but can't wait to get into VOOT when some bastard will play me.
You in Victoria, Lobby? :D I'd love to take on a human challnger, because my only experience with VOOT comes from a pirated copy obtained after the console's death. And because Tangram's a bitch. One of the most inventive fighting game bosses ever, certainly, but a bitch nonetheless.
I've only got a few titles for my DC and haven't managed/bothered to pick up anything since it's demise, but those games sustained me for a long, long time: Jet SET Radio, SoulCal and SFA3 (which was less enjoyable because I didn't have a stick).
Shenmue was definitely a highlight and remains one of my fave games today, I must've put months into that when it first arrived. Practically every time I hired a game and had to make room on the VMU, the 80 block Shenmue file would go, just so I could replay it again :) I stalked every damn character, put in way too many hours on Space Harrier to be considered healthy and oftentimes left the game running just for it's soundtrack (The Spot for the win). Never forget the day I discovered the Yamanose apartment schoolgirl panty trick ;)
Dreamcast - my equal favourite console along with the N64.
My first DC experience was a at computer & technology expo here in Perth in September 1999. After only a few seconds of playing Sega Rally 2, I was in gaming heaven. Everything about the console is fantastic - the controller, the games, the VMU's, the lack of PS2-style pixelation, the fact that it's software library (of approx. 250 games) has the best ratio of great-to-crap games.
I kick myself for not getting a DC earlier - although it would've meant trading my N64, something I couldn't do. I waited until I had a job, and I bought a pre-owned DC in January 2003.
Favourite DC titles?
Sega Rally 2 - The game that got me into the system.
Soul Calibur - The best 3D fighter ever made.
Sonic Adventure - Sonic's first truly 3D outing, and the best (3D one) of them all in my opinion.
Metropolis Street Racer - This sensational racing game would later be given a sequel called, Project Gotham Racing. Yep - it started on the DC. And in fact, it does a few things better than it's successor. The real time clock and greater length, namely.
Daytona USA 2001 - Finally, a perfect home version of one of the best arcade racers of our time. The graphics on this are easily current-generation stuff.
Shenmue - Truly mindblowing stuff that's still ahead of it's time.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - The best home version of one of the best 2D fighters ever made.
The House of the Dead 2 - My favourite light-gun game ever.
Honourable mentions go to: Tokyo Highway Challenge 2, Chu Chu Rocket, F355 Challenge, Bangai-O and Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

I bought a Dreamcast in 2001, after Sega had pulled the plug. I had a huge pile of money burning a hole in my pocket one day, and when the guy at VGH Knox wouldn't sell me his Neo Geo I had to swallow my Nintendo-pride and settle for the Dreamcast instead.
I got it with Soul Calibur and Dead Or Alive 2, but within six months, I'd picked up around 20 games, a keyboard, an arcade stick and even a rumble pack. I could justify the money I spent on it solely for SC, as I probably spent well over the money I paid for the DC on that game in the arcade, and probably close to that on DoA2 (why, if I had a dollar for everytime I played SC or DoA2 in the arcade... well... I could have bought two Dreamcasts...).
I've never confirmed it for sure, but I have a feeling my Dreamcast has been modded, as its booted games from Japan, the US and here all without boot-discs or other tricks.
If it wasn't for the Dreamcast, I'd probably never have got into the current generation of consoles at all. More importantly, it got me into the Saturn, which is far superior to the Dreamcast, due to the sheer number of exclusive games on that. A lot of DC exclusives later got ported to other systems.

Everything about the console is fantastic - the controller ....[edit] ...the VMU's,
I think the VMUs are the only design error with the Dreamcast. These relatively heavy, somewhat large and useless things that take up a big space (times 2!!)in the middle of the controller. Had the VMU unit attached to the console itself then the controller could have been a little more streamlined (ie smaller). I love everything else about the Dreamcast. The design, the colour. I even like the noise!! LOL. But the VMU is an overrated tamagotchi.
Oh and I know Im probably alone on this. But I love a TOP LOADER. I have no time for tray and slot loading disc based systems. When I saw theh PStwo redesign I was very happy. Less can go wrong with a top loader. You can clean it easier, make sure the disc is perfectly placed.....
Of course I wish games were still on carts. But I'll quite while Im ahead :)

I'll let you know if I do and we can give this game the time it deserves! btw, have you seen it running on VGA? As far as pure console gaming experiences go, nothing tops the Dreamcast.
It was designed as a gaming machine, and that's what I love most about it. If you couldn't afford a DC personally, you wouldn't have one. It didn't have a DVD player you could use to convince your parents that it was really an "entertainment unit" and not just a "time-waster." You bought your DC because you loved games, and because you knew Sega are one kick-ass game developer.
But, I wouldn't say it's the best console of all time. That title, most certainly, and coincidentally, goes to the Megadrive. Which brings up another point on why the DC was so great- it was basically a Megadrive with better graphical capabilities. And that, my friends, is the best example of gaming purity I know of.

So hang on. Youre asserting tha the Dreamcast was desinged as a 'pure games machine' cause it wasn't able to play DVDs? Where the XBOX and PS2 are somehow 'impure' because they allow you this extra benefit?
I think you've forgotten that the DC also allowed you to play audio Cds. So you could have said to your parents "its also a stereo entertainment system". OMG. Thats means it never was a pure gaming experience for the hardcore doesnt it . :) hee hee. A sordid multi media system !!!
It also let you connect to the internet and browse web pages. Is checking porn sites in line with gaming purity?
Looks like the GCN will be the last 'pure' gaming system ever made. Oh no!! :P

question: how good was shenmue?
i have heard alot about it yet i never got a chance to play it due to the short lifespan of the console....what would itbe compareable to ps2, gcn or sexbox...?
Shenmue is probably not for everyone. It's a very slow game and if you don't like the characters, you may end up hating it very quickly.
What's it comparable to? Nothing. It's a unique experience. Shenmue II was released on Xbox though, and it comes with a DVD that shows you all the events of the first game. So if you can't get a copy of the game, Shenmue II will show you what happened so you won't be left in the dark when you land on the streets of Hong Kong.
So far, though I haven't finished Shenmue II yet, I found the first game a lot more enjoyable.
But, I wouldn't say it's the best console of all time. That title, most certainly, and coincidentally, goes to the Megadrive. Ugh, the Mega Drive. I'm sorry. but I'm just not a fan of it. The majority of the Dreamcast's games range from average to awesome. The majority of Mega Drive titles are crap. Plus when it comes to 16-bit gaming, anything the MD can do, the SNES can do better.
I respect the MD because it was the console that put Sega on the gaming map, but it's not one that holds up well over time.

Yeah. I agree with what Ezri said.
Shenmue is a great game. But playing it now its very clearly out dated. Still fun, remains an attractive looking title. But its not something worth buying a DC just to play. Of course if you had a DC you'd definitely want to own it. I bought a brand new copy last year (still sealed) for $10 USD :)
The game is very slow as Ezri said and heavily scripted. When not folowing the set path of the games story there is very little to do. Shenmue promised a real breathing city - but in refllection it delivered nothing close. Pick it up if youre a games collector/ enthusiast retro nut. But if you're notsalgia free there's far better games out there to spend time with.

I think you missed the point of what I said. Sega of course had to incorporate technology into the DC otherwise it would be entirely redundant. Similarly, I would argue that the GC, PS2 and Xbox are also pure gaming machines. However, what I was mainly talking about, in general, are things like the Gizmondo, N-Gage and 3D0, which are never designed for a gaming experience predominantly.
I just got the feeling like Sony and say, Microsoft, cared too much when they were making their consoles about things like DVD capability, when they could be spending more time on the gaming hardware (like Sony are doing now with Cell). I am a proud owner of all the consoles, but it kind of pisses me off when people bitch on and on about them hating their PS2 because the DVD player is bad. If i wanted a DVD player, I'd go to Dick Smith's and buy one for $50. Quit bitching.
But i get what you mean, craptest.

MyAmiga 500 wasnt designed to be a games machine, meant as an affordable home office PC primarily. Yet it ended up hosting some amazing games and was definitely one of the best gaming platforms of the time.
So Im still not sure what youre saying but Im pretty sure I disagree.lol
And I think people are entitled to bitch about the XBOX/PS2 dvd player if its not performing up to snuff. Just as youd complain if the car you recently bought had a faulty radio even though you obviously dont buy a car to listen to music....
But yeah. The DREAMCAST. What a great console. Discuss :) (hee hee)

Yeah, every battle in VOOT looked spectacular, even if it was just two scrubs blindly fumbling over the controls.
The game is very slow as Ezri said and heavily scripted. When not folowing the set path of the games story there is very little to do. Shenmue promised a real breathing city - but in refllection it delivered nothing close.
The sequel was even more rigid, or was it simply because it's universe was larger and thus the lack of interaction was more apparent? Either way, I didn't enjoy my time with the second nearly half as much and haven't felt compelled to go back and finish up my half-complete save file, either. Not sure whether I would've been this against it if I'd picked it up on the DC when it first arrived, but a couple of years later on the Xbox and I just wasn't impressed.

Shenmue cost a LOT of money to make. I don't have any figures on me, but I've read that it was one of the most expensive video game productions ever.
When it didn't sell like Sega predicted, they didn't feel compelled to continue with it. Though I'm not convinced the franchise is dead entirely.

When it comes to random trivia, imdb is the place to go:
This Dreamcast video game cost over $20 million to develop and is the most expensive Video Game ever developed. The project took seven years to complete by Sega's game-development AM2 division. For this feat, it has a place in the Guiness Book of World Records.
The game was originally set to be released for the Sega Saturn. But due to the huge failure of the Saturn in the USA and Europe, and the fact that the Dreamcast was coming to Japan in 1998, the Saturn version was canceled. Sega even released a 3-minute clip of the game being programmed on the Saturn's hardware. Reference from Shenmue II are present here as well, which shows that both the Shenmue games were in development for a long time. The clip can be unlocked after you beat Shenmue II.
Yu Suzuki originally wrote Shenmue with 9 chapters and originally intended for each chapter to have it's own game. However, with only moderate success achieved with Shenmue (Chapter 1), Shenmue 2 contained chapters 2-4 in the one game and some parts of the intended game were cut out. The time Ryo spends on the ship traveling from Japan to Hong Kong was meant to be part of the game.
Shenmue is still alive as apparently "Shenmue Online" is still in development.
I've heard of that, but I doubt it'll further the story or anything.

Oh dear, Stormin just exploded.
It's like a painful, festering wound that I can't stop picking at. Shenmue Online hurts.
Shenmue is the greatest video game ever made, and the worst video game ever made.
Anyway, back to the Dreamcast Appreciation Thread.
I got into the Dreamcast pretty late in the fight- it was the first Christmas for the PS2 and well, we all know what eventually happened.
I got the system an extra controller and Soul Calibur- it was amazing and still looks and plays like a million bucks!
But what really got me was the overall aesthetic of the system. Y'see im into graphic design and well, even the box (which I still have) blew my mind. There was someting exotic about the whole experience.
Later i was introduced to a game I had no idea about.
"Shenmue" was a game I had only heard of by name. I had an idea it was an rpg of sorts but nothing prepared me for the 'experience' of playing it.
I remember borrowing some money off my brother to buy the game which I continue to play over and over again. Shenmue Passport is like a trip down memory lane, I especially like the music which can be played.
This remains for me the highpoint of my gaming habit.
Every now and then I get the little white wonder out of the wardrobe and give some games a spin, and the overall experience surpasses that of the Xbox sitting next to it on the floor.

The DC launched shortly after my 2nd playstation had been stolen (I used to live in Townsville so don't be surprised. I wasn't.) and I grabbed it shortly after that. Probably spent over a grand on it right away, I had to have an arcade stick and all of that and what I remember most clearly is the sheer excitement over how advanced the games looked! Even the console itself is the most visually appealing of any console before and after it (IMO).
After it 'died' support wise I didn't bother getting another system until I picked up my ps2 last year. There's little to nothing I can fault when it comes to the DC, I just wish mine still worked properly, haha.

Does anybody remember the game Ooga Booga. I don't think it was released in Australia as it was towards the end of console's days. I had to get a pirated version and am still on the lookout for an original copy.
Also, I can't believe that Sega has'nt released Daytona for the current systems. That was an awsome game on the D.C and it would flourish as an on-line racer. Still has'nt been beat at the arcades in my opinion.

Recently started playing shenmue2 on xbox and realy got into it so I decided to put it aside and buy a copyof the first one fro the dreamcast and start there. The dreamcast version I picked up on ebay for about 40 dollars hasnt arrived yet and I have two weeks holidays and am very excited for when it arrives. I was wondering how long shenmue one and two take to complete? from the couple of hours I have out into shenmue 2 so far it seems like its going to be a very long game. Has anyone had any experience with the converters that enable you to use PS2 controllers on the Dreamcast? I was thinkng of buying one to get a decent steering wheel for Daytona and Sega Rally.
Also I found a system link cable the other day and can't find out which games support it. I'd love a bit of daytona link-up. If people out there know which games work with it, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks. :-D

Great! Now I have to hunt down a couple of japanese versions of Seda Rally 2!!
The official Dreamcast wheel looks a little crap to me. The PS2 ones have rumble features which I hope will work like the Dreamcast rumble pack on the controllers.
Thanks for your help people.
Third-party DC wheels have rumble too. So does the official one, I think.

Sorry i am a newbie those are the games that i own my wishlist would be as follows: Grandia 2, Evolution 2, 3rd strike , Marvel vs Capcom 2 , Gunbird 2, Bangai o, Power Stone 2, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 2 and 3, Headhunter, Crazy Taxi 2, Daytona, Project justice, Samba and maracas, outrigger, Bust a Move 4, Capcom vs Snk and Sonic Shuffle.
Any other rare games that are worth having let me know.
I heartily recommend Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (DC version is the best iteration), Power Stone 2, Resident Evil 2 (best version of the game), Daytona USA 2001 and Bangai-O.
You'd be better of getting SFIII: Third Strike on Xbox as part of the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection release. Easier to find, and Live enabled.
Gunbird 2 was re-released on PS2 as part of Gunbird Special Edition on PS2. The original Gunbird (Arcade/Saturn) is also included on the disc. This PS2 disc is much easier and cheaper to find.
As for Sonic Shuffle. Unless you're an absolute die-hard Sonic fan, I'd pass on this game. It tries to expand on Mario Party, but fails dismally as the mini-games are less frequent, and traversing the board takes longer, and is frustrating.

I don't really buy games that I have no interest in but will often buy a title only because I enjoyed it years ago (Bimini Run,Megadrive). After a quick play it gets put away to await my next sudden burst of nostalgia.
There are very few old games that I buy (dreamcast excluded) that I will play for longer than a couple of hours. Having said that I have just recently found myself addicted once again to Eternal Champions CD. I just finished it with Crispy the chicken no less.

Speaking of Sonic Shuffle, I've owned two copies of that game and sold them both (dirt cheap) because I just couldn't handle keeping them, and I am not what one would call a casual Sonic fan. Considering getting it again for completion's sake, but it's really not worth the money for a PAL copy. Get a US-NTSC one if you have to have it.
Dreamcast stuffola I own atm:
PAL Dreamcast system, boxed with everything, white VMU, black VMU, complete Samba De Amigo maracas, complete Japanese keyboard,
Bust A Move 4 (PAL)
Capcom vs SNK (PAL)
Chu Chu Rocket (PAL)
Feet Of Fury (homebrew game made by a guy that posts on another board I go to, all regions)
Grandia II (PAL.. bleh. Looking for the Jap special edition for soundtrack goodness)
Guilty Gear X (JAP)
King of Fighters 2000 (JAP)
King of Fighters Dreammatch 99 (US)
Marvel vs Capcom 2 (PAL)
Mr. Driller (PAL)
Shenmue II (PAL)
Sonic Adventure (PAL)
Sonic Adventure 2 (PAL)
Sonic Adventure 10th Anniversary Birthday Pack (JAP, game sealed)
Soul Calibur (PAL)
Space Channel 5 (PAL)
Time Stalkers (PAL)
The stupid part is that I've only had to import like, 3 things off that whole list, and they were all games. Sadly, DC supplies in the wild are drying up fast (just like everything else, really). :(
I have SOOO many imports I want to get (Hello Kitty DC and SP5P2 collector's pack being at the top of the list) but I know I should just wait until Steve and I go to Japan... in September!
Oh, and I agree with what Ezri said ;)

I have been turned on the sonic shuffle subject and will only buy it if i find a cheap one.Whats Samba de Amigo like as a game i know the PAL maracas are almost impossible to get ahold of in oz and from overseas they cost a small fortune.I agree that dc is getting harder and harder to find so i am always having to import from the uk which sucks because for games like Grandia 2 and Project Justice you are paying over $50 each. I have a friend who has the Grandia 2 special edition i will ask him if he is willing to sell, i will let you know.

Yeah Dreamcast rocks the house!. How many people did you mention Dreamcast to and all they had to say was, "I'm waiting for PS2, it's got DVD"?!
The games were awesome and yeah Sonic Adventure is an awesome game and Sonic 2 just upped it to a new level (Bar the very playable but irritating l non-sonic levels). My Dreamcast is still going strong and I have a fair few games, all originals - Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Soul Calibur, V8:2nd Offense, Resident Evil2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Daytona 2001, Virtua Fighter 3TB, Marvel Vs Capcom2, Mortal Kombat Gold, Quake3: Arena, V-Rally2: Expert Edition, Toy Commander, and more that I can't seem to remember right this instant! And it is an awsome system for emulators, provided you have the boot disk. First experience waz at Hi-Tech World playing emerald coast (sonic) on a big rear projection screen. Screams of joy were heard all across town....

I've been looking to buy a dreamcast for a while, and there's a second hand one at a store near me for $90, I'm going to inquire about the condition of it, but assuming all checks out, is that a good deal?
Also, are official VMU's hard to pick up these days?
As long as you don't care that it's white, official Sega DC VMU's are everywhere.
It's just the coloured ones which are harder to find.
Chilli
03-02-2006, 12:18 PM
I had a bit of trouble finding a VMU at markets/garage sales/pawnbrokers , but I don't think you would have too much trouble tracking one down online.
Also I would think for $90 it would need to be in really good condition and boxed, however that said I haven't seen too many in my travels. Maybe also check online if it's a good price ebay or something, I don't know much about that sorry.
$90? No way! They only retailed brand new for $49.95. Shop around more, or of course - eBay.

I've had a Dreamcast since 2002. I only bought it to play Nadesico: The Mission,
a Jap import game based on my favorite anime series. Had to grab a VMU
for save games and while I was in the store I also bought a copy of Aero Wings
with a busted CD case for $10. Once I gave up on Nadesico: The Mission because
my Japanese wasn't up to scratch to get much out of the game and I'd played
my fill of Aero Wings, the Dreamcast languished in my storage room in a box.
Recently my interest in the Dreamcast has revived and I've bought a few
more games and accessoried off eBay.
An extra controller
Another VMU
VGA box
Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (US)
Resident Evil 2
Space Channel 5
I have a few other consoles, the only one that is anywhere near current gen
is a Gamecube. The old tat includes:
Goldstar 3DO
Atari Jaguar with Jag CD
Saturn
N-64
Never had a PSX or PS2.
I think the N-64 gave me the most gaming fun.
Looking forward to getting some more use out of the Dreamcast.

So i took the plunge and bought a Cast from Cashies today. $80 for the consols, leads, 2 controllers and a VMU.
My question is, is the machine prone to getting hot and not functioning?
I ask because whilst trying it out today, i got Sonic Adventures to work, and a Utopia boot disk, however the 3rd test was Shenmue, which:
1st go - didn't show the intro, then sat on the loading screen after the main menu
2nd go - just sat blank after the sega screen.
Wasn't until the 3rd go after i gave it some time did it work.
My copy of Shenmue is in immaculate condition, better than SA, and the Utopia disk was a burnt cd.
Today was a 33 degree day, and we don't have AC so its the only thing i can think of. Then machine itself looks in good condition, with minimal scuffing, and no marks.
I have found the Utopia boot CD unreliable and inconsistent. Download a copy of the Action Replay CDX demo.
I use it and all 6 DC imports I have work perfectly with it.

I have Ikaruga cdi image, from when i played it with a DC emulator. It was supposed to be bootable, but when i burnt it didn't work. And yeah the Utopia thing just sat at a spinning reindeer/dog.
Was mainly just to test the machine, but it'd be cool if Ikaruga worked.
Errr, lets keep clear of the pirate game discussion. :-P

Ok so i now have a dreamcast, so you can all start throwing recommendations at me...
What are the killer DC apps (and not ones like Space Channel, Rez, and Soul Calibur i already have them on PS2 :D)
I would still get Soul Calibur - the DC version is my favourite, and a lot of other people seem to prefer it over 2 or 3. Besides - it's not like it's expensive or rare or anything.
Personal recommendations:
Sega Rally 2
Soul Calibur
Sonic Adventure
Power Stone
Metropolis Street Racer
Daytona USA 2001
Chu Chu Rocket
The House of the Dead 2
Bangai-O
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Crazy Taxi
Shenmue
The Typing of the Dead
Other great games:
Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram, Sonic Adventure 2, Sega GT, San Francisco Rush 2049, Tokyo Highway Challenge, Virtua Fighter 3tb, Tokyo Highway Challenge 2, Dead or Alive 2, Marvel vs. Capcom, F355 Challenge, Sega Bass Fishing, Worms Armageddon, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Hydro Thunder and Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future.

Hi all,
I'm thinking about buying a Dreamcast and would love some advice!
On Ebay there is a Brand new PAL UK one going for approximately 85 pounds plus 18 pounds postage. Approximately $250 all up.
Then there is the usual 60 dollars US versions also brand new. Postage is an additional 59 dollars US. Total cost around $160 australian.
Can anyone please suggest which is the better deal and is it easier to buy US games or Pal games.
In other words, is it worth spending the extra to get a PAL console or buy the less expensive US version and buy a step down converter.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Those prices seem pretty steep to me.
Last year I bought a Dreamcast, 8 games, 3 controllers and a memory card for $100 and the postage only came to $20.
Maybe just look around a bit more.
Indeed. Anyone paying more than $100 for a DC console (new or not) is insane.
As for PAL or NTSC, well, playing NTSC games on a PAL console is no real issue, and you don't have to pay the extra for a step down convertor.
Try your local pawn shops, Cash Converters etc, or failing that - eBay.

NTSC on a PAL console is no problem? So there was nothing stopping me putting PSOv2(NTSC) into my PAL console? Wow thatd be pretty cool, but I'm guessing I read it wrong.
Well, by easy I meant you can just download a copy of the Action Replay CDX Demo disc, which unlocks the region coding on the DC.
There's also the free Utopia Boot Disc, and a few others that you have to pay for (DCX, etc.).
Between all of the boot CD's available, you can pretty much guarantee your can get all import games working.
I've got an Action Replay CDX Demo and all my NTSC games work perfectly with it.

Well, as we've found in the past, your Dreamcast is problematic at best. In your situation, it's difficult to tell if a game isn't working, given that it seems to screw up on any given game.
Unless you've recently repaired/replaced your DC?

Damn your skepticism of my DC
Whilst this is true, buggered if I can understand how LB2 refuses to boot at all (never got to the Sega screen), whilst FF:MotW (which I got at the same time) has no problems. Both at US games, and both are pristine discs. Meanwhile Sonic Adventures, which looks like it belonged to a 5 year old with hooks for hands, boot fine aswell.

I've been downloading homebrew games for the DC this week and some of them are really impressive. Their are some great beat-em-ups that pay homage to the 16 bit greats like streets of rage and final fight. Even an early FPS from Bungie. has anyone else added these games to their collection?
What early Bungie game is it? Is it Marathon or Pathways into Darkness? Also do you need a chipped DC to play homebrew software?
Cranky
26-05-2006, 09:55 AM
Marathon it is. I'm yet to download it though (I've nearly used my limit this month). My DC isn't chipped and it runs them without a problem.
Here is a link for anyone interested http://www.dcevolution.net/index.php
Thats awesome! Marathon rocks and its not only just Marathon, its the entire Marathon Trilogy :headbang:
Marathon 2 was the best imo.
Next week when I get back to my desktop I'll be investigating this further :D
Just spent the night exploring the homebrew scene and after 3 cds I got a working copy of NesterDC. This is awesome, it has opened up a new side of my Dreamcast I never knew existed (well I did but I didn't know you could do it without a mod chip).

Need some help, guys.
I have two offers for my DS. One is a Dreamcast with a controller, VMU, couple of standard games (Sega Rally and another I can't remember for some reason), $20 and Syphon Filter 1 and 2 for PS1. I also have an offer for $110 cash.
What is the best? It's just that I'm not entirely sure how much DCs are worth, so your help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd take the DC they are starting to become hard to get ahold of. Look on ebay at prices and make a comparison.

most of the games i've seen lately for DC are pretty half arsed shooters. If you say something like that you should really provide an example.
The last shooter made for DC is also on Gamecube and PS2. Radilgy I believe its called. NTSC-UK said its pretty good, if youre a fan of the genre.
As for the DC in general, I find myself less and less impressed with it as time marches on. I think some of thsi is a reaction to the blind love fans have towards the console. The 'weez were robbed' mentality of many DC owners also grates with me. You cant blame the Sony hype meachine for everything.

The DC brought many perfect naomi arcade conversions to the home format, but show me what other legacy of gaming brilliance its responsible for? Shenmue. PSO. Skies of Arcadia. JGR. Ummmm.....
Id be interested to know where sega fans place the Dreamcast amongst the other SEGA consoles. Id be surprised if its viewed as their finest hour. Best hardware design. Sure. But content? Original killer apps? Economics forced sega to abandon the DC earlier than expected & thus the catalogue of sega games on the machine doesnt stack up against past efforts. That woudl be my blind appraisal (fact is Ive only owned a DC).
Placing the DC among its peers it doesnt fair well imo. Along side the PS2, XBOX and GCN for me it places a pretty clear last (okay. Maybe it edges out the XBOX  ). And thats based purely on the quality of its original software. Even if you see it as the final entry in the last generation, the N64 kills it. And if you wade through all the crap that makes up the majority of the PS1 games list you'd probably find that the PSone even out does it in terms of interesting content. Okay maybe Im stetching the truth just a little.....
I like the DC. Awesome design. Great looking noisy piece of kit. Some of the best arcade conversions (best home version of Ikaruga!!). But as far as being home to many important milestones in videogame creativity..... the computer says no.
I'm sure Ezri will have a lot to say about this (hopefully he wont start with 'crappy you're an idiot').

Sorry for such a negative post (hey it started well). I realise this is the 'DC appreciation thread' not the 'dc depreciation thread'. The DC was SEGA's last console and thus gets a good amount of sympathy vote. But suggesting its SEGA's finest hour (if anyone actually is. Im just rambling) is akin to championing the gamecube as Nintendo's greatest legacy to videogames (lets pretend the Gamecube was Nintendo's last console). Quality 1st party content on both consoles if lacking when compared to previous generations.
Ah. Never let facts get in the way of a good rant right? Im hoping my post generates some constructive banter - god knows i get enough hate mail as it is.....

craptest, the reason I believe you are getting less impressed is that since they are now 3rd party there is less of a draw. Think about all the great fighters like Soul Calibur and whatnot. Now they are everywhere else, where's the draw? What about games that might as well be art like Jet Grind Radio? Oh, it's on the Xbox now in the form of a just as brilliant sequel? What about Shenmue, oh, it's basically on another system again.
However, if you favorites were Sega games such as the above and Sega had not gone 3rd party what would you do? Maybe they weren't your favorite, but you still enjoyed them thusly since they were something new at the time. Now you don't get it as much as thus it's turning into a trivial issue.
I'm probably digressing, but I think you can pick up on the general point. It's the impact of time and newer games of the same franchises being available is what I think I'm saying.
Well, I can only respond from my perspective, so I can't speak for everyone but here goes.
As for the DC in general, I find myself less and less impressed with it as time marches on. I think some of thsi is a reaction to the blind love fans have towards the console. The 'weez were robbed' mentality of many DC owners also grates with me. You cant blame the Sony hype meachine for everything.
I'm playing my DC a little less as time goes on, simply because I'm running out of games to play on it. I think I've had a pretty good run out of system that was largely abandoned 4.5 years ago.
As for Sony hatred, I don't feel that way. I was (and still am) annoyed at consumers who bought a PS2 early because "it will have good games and I can wtch DVD's". I mean, good work Sony, you did well, but I just can't stand the rationalising the purchase of a (then) $800 piece of equipment just so you can have the opportunity to play decent 9 to 12 months later. The DC was cheaper, had four controller ports and a plethora of great games. It was a frustrating situation for me.
Plus it was only just recently that I hit 40 PS2 games, 2 more than on my DC. I think it's a testament to how great the console's library was that in it's short 2 year market life, it delivered just as many decent that the PS2 took three times that length of time.
The DC brought many perfect naomi arcade conversions to the home format, but show me what other legacy of gaming brilliance its responsible for? Shenmue. PSO. Skies of Arcadia. JGR. Ummmm.....
I think Shenmue was reason enough, and if that game had been on PS2, it probably would've made a bigger impact.
I find most Sega fans romanticise the Mega Drive, and this is where I fall into being an 'atypical' Sega fan. Everyone reveres their 16-bit machine because it had more games, and it was the most popular. When I play the Mega Drive, sure, there are a couple exclusives that are good, but overall, it just feels so much inferior to the SNES. I really have problems enjoying the MD simply because the SNES is better, prettier and has many more games I enjoy.
My Sega love is primarily in the Saturn and more so, the Dreamcast (and Game Gear/SMS to a slightly lesser extent). This love is due to the fact that the Dreamcast simply has more GAMES I enjoy. It's got nothing to do with some sort of romanticised view of an underappreciated console - IT HAS GAMES, WHICH I ENJOY AND MANY OF THEM. This is my rationale for loving the DC, and if I'm going be shot down for liking a console that has lots of great games I love, then well, "crappy, you're an idiot". :-P
Well, now we're just arguing over subjectivities, which I'm not going to bother retorting except for: "no u".
I like the DC. Awesome design. Great looking noisy piece of kit. Some of the best arcade conversions (best home version of Ikaruga!!). But as far as being home to many important milestones in videogame creativity..... the computer says no.
Well, my enjoyment of a console isn't diminshed simply because it didn't have any games regarded as historically influential. I mean, personally I feel that Shenmue fits that bill, but whatever.
Perhaps we should argue subjectivities until we realise it's pointless. OH WAIT.
The DC was SEGA's last console and thus gets a good amount of sympathy vote. But suggesting its SEGA's finest hour (if anyone actually is. So I got a swag of stuff today (see Retro aquistitions).
First up was the Lightgun. Now I've had HotD2 for a while now so I know it works, and still does. Next was Dead or Alive 2. Didn't want to boot, and the disc was fine. So I chucked in Marvel vs Capcom (as the 3rd game was still sealed). Dang it, this doesn't want to boot either.
So I unplug the system, and hoist her onto the kitchen table. I pulled off the lid and cleared up any dust, epsecially around the Lid switch. Next I thought I'd try calibrating the laser, so I flipped over the GD-ROM. Now I didn't have an implement small enough to adjust the little screw, so I just left it (although I may have been able to turn it clockwise very slighty in my first attempt). So I cleared up any dust, and pieced the whole system back together.
Fired up DoA2, and HUZZAH! It worked. Played through Story mode several times (forgot how short it was), then I tried MvsC.
:(
Once again, it wasn't loading. And these discs are perfectly fine.
So I unwrapped Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, and gave it a go. Thankfully it worked.
So in conclusion, I think I'll begin scouring ebay for a console only auction :(

Sif. In fact, DOA2 on DC is an example of some of the DC's best graphics. Sure, there are jaggies some of background imagery, but it's not where near as bad as on the PS2 - and the character models are jaggie-free.

I was pretty unimpressed with it though. The whole game in generalI think you can probably live without it. One for completists or DC collectors only imo.
BTW - I posted a scan of an old SHENMUE review in the RETRO-SCANS thread if anyone is interested.
Virtua Fighter 4 is awesome, best 3D fighter to date, imo.

Sonic Team are responsible for Phantasy Star on the Master System which was impressive for an 8bit console. How could you not include Burning Rangers. The freedom of movement allowed for a lot of fun in navigating the (too few) levels. Certainly compensated for the lack of the Tomb Raider sequel by bettering that style of play with JETPACKS.
Also Panzer Dragoon games on the Saturn were made by Team Andromeda, with some members of that team moving onto Smilebit.

Sigh. I know this is a bit of an old post, but I had to reply.
Firstly, they're overrated NOW, because Naka is not-so-slowly driving them into the ground, all which started as far back as Sonic X-Treme. When's he leaving again?
Secondly, Sonic Team = Puyo Puyo, Phantasy Star & Samba De Amigo, amongst others I can't be bothered recalling off the top of my head, all of which are quality. You can't dump on ST because of the mistakes they're making now if you choose to stand by Sega itself, which was driven into the ground thanks to similar dumb mistakes. Despite the horrendous path the Sonic franchise is spiraling down, ST's other games are still very very good in general. Everyone makes mistakes.
Thirdly, sif forget JSR & JSRF, also made by Smilebit. :P
As a side note, crappy, I haven't had a Sonic av for ages and everyone knows I'm the biggest Sonic fan on this forum. :D (And if they don't, they damn well should!)

Naka is off to lead a new development soonish I heard.
I don't understand what you mean by Naka driving them into the ground since Xtreme. The only influence Naka had on Xtreme was by not allowing Sega Learning Institute to use the NiGHTS engine but that was because he wasn't asked it they could. It was more the fault of the poor relationship between SEGA of America and SEGA of Japan.
As for the current direction it's because the original Sonic team members haven't been together since the first Sonic Adventure and that Naka is less responsible for the games themselves.

They did ask, actually, and he gave them permission. THEN he decided he didn't want them to use it, and took it back. It's no secret that SoA and SoJ have a very poor relationship, and Naka just took it another step further. X-Treme's development team then tried to release the completely reworked game on the Saturn AND the PC and both versions were knocked back. Therefore there was no proper Sonic game on the Saturn, which made people look for other options. There began the downfall of Sega, as they never seemed to recover from the mistake of not releasing a new Sonic game, their biggest mascot. Imagine the hole Ninty would be in if they'd never released Mario 64 or OoT. Same thing.

Same thing.
Ezri: I know sweetie, that's why I didn't disembowel you for the MD comments. ;) <3
Not having Sonic would've been a definite detractor, but I think Sega was facing a problem of a tarnished name and reputation in a large way.
One thing I've noticed looking through those old Megazone Magazines (circa 1994/95, is the amount of distrust already instilled Sega consumers). There were dozens and dozens of letters were people were unhappy with their Mega CD, a unit they'd spent so much on, and now Sega were about to release the 32X, and the Neptune (later canned) was yet another Mega Drive incarnation that was attempted to be foisted.
I think Sega fans got sick and tired of having new hardware shoved down their throats, very often, and then not having enough decent games to justify the expense (the Mega CD and 32X were about $400 a piece).
The Mega Drive was a great seller because it was a cheap, solid system that was guaranteed to delivered - Sega abused the loyalty and trust of consumers with substandard add-ons, that by the time the Saturn came out, there just weren't as many Sega fans as there used to be.
And not having Sonic there with them on the Saturn just made it a whole lot worse.
OH IF ONLY I HAD A TIME MACHINE SO I COULD STOP SEGA FROM MAKING THE MEGA CD AND 32X.
As for the Dreamcast d-pad, I don't find it good, I don't find it bad. It's average. I've only one game where it's been a problem (Space Channel 5), but that's mainly because my main controller is very worn out :-P

You have to remember though this was 1993. It was pretty cool to have a CD player in your room and the Mega CD did come in a pretty tasty package.
Look at this value!!

For the record, the combination of my fighting collection and the DC D-Pad is the reason I'm looking for an arcade stick. That thing HURTS! Worst D-pad I've ever come across.
Sorry, but I think the Sony Dual Shock controller is a LOT worse for fighters than DC pad.
I get a sore thumb after playing for about 15 minutes - the controller is unusable for fighters. The DC pad may be inaccurate, but it doesn't cause me physical injury.
Fortunately I have a fighting pad and arcade stick for my PS2 and DC respectively. :-)

Dammit m'am, the DC pad has like a 2 foot raised edge. Its like running your thumb across razors. At least with the PS2 pad, if you wrap your thumb under the bottom of your shirt, it doesn't hurt so much.

Last weekend I finally set up my Gamecube kiosk, and then this weekend I picked up the Dreamcast kiosk I bought off ebay 3 or 4 months ago ( I was pleasantly suprised the guy hadn't sold it again  )
Here's a picture, I'm still cleaning and putting the Dreamcast kiosk back together, but you get the idea.
The Dreamcast sign in front of the GBA stand is a light that goes on top of the stand. Then I just have to put in the controllers and it's ready to go.
I was thinking about getting some holsters made and put on the side so I'm always ready for some House of the Dead action.

Hey Chilli man, did the TV's get included with the kiosks, if so how mcuh did that make the gamecube one?No the tv's weren't included, however the xbox kisok I'm yet to pickup does come with a tv.
The tv in the GCN stand is a LCD screen I had lying around (I bought it some time early last year and just haven't been using it). The tv in the Dreamcast I got for free but it needed a bit of a clean up.
The cube stand cost $100 I think, I've had it for a while now, and I have another but its missing a few pieces.
The GBA stand cost $30, and the Dreamcast stand cost $250 or $300 but it came with quite alot of stuff, including a dance mat,a gun, 10 original games, (40 not so original), a fishing reel, two controllers, two vmu's, two rumble packs, steering wheel, keyboard oh and of course a Dreamcast (boxed), with most of the perhipals also boxed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst the kiosks look nice, aren't they a little impractical? I rather sit down for my gaming. Thanks. I think they look good too. Which is what actual makes them practical - they help legitimize my collecting. My girlfriend can sometimes get upset with all the boxes, consoles and cords I leave lying around.
----Example : I used to have cat5 (for xbox) running from one end of the house to the other = grumpy gf.
--------------Now I've put it through the roof and walls to most rooms in the house = happy gf.
So the kiosks also help to keep me in the good books. Especially when friends or my younger cousins come over as it (hopefully) will stay neat and tidy, while still being ready to go at any moment. So there is a few practical reasons to having the kiosks.
As far as playing at these consoles I have a couple of stools, admittedly they aren't as comfy as the couch, but for most guests they only play for short periods anyway, and as Cranky mentioned I have multiple units set up in other areas of the house for my own gaming, or longer sessions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think when you start filling your house with console kiosks 'practical' isnt a word that pops into your head much. True. But another major reason I feel it is practical to fill my "games room" with kiosks and arcade machines is - I suck so hard at pool.
If I had bought the $3000 pool table I was looking at, I would still be running around it with my pants down.
And as far as the interruptions go, that sounds like a welcome change, then maybe I wouldn't hear how the lawn needs mowing or the dishes still aren't done.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Ahh, go Sony. :D
Yeah because the GCN d-pad is a triumph of controller design. Shutup fanboy. :-P

You're using a boot disc to play this on a PAL Dreamcast, right?
The problem is that the game's probably running in 50Hz mode. I know it shouldn't be, but that's the way it is. Some NTSC games will remain 60Hz when you play them on a PAL unit, others get switched down to 50Hz, it's completely random.
Of my NTSC games, Virtual-On and The House of the Dead 2 playback in 60Hz, where as Sega Rally 2, Space Channel 5 and Typing of the Dead get switched down 50Hz.
Ultimate solution - buy an NTSC Dreamcast :-D

There's Confidential Mission, Death Crimson, Silent Scope (which I would imagine would be odd playing with a pistol light gun) and Virtua Cop 2.
VC2 is just a straight port of the original Saturn version, and NOT the arcade version. Graphics are as basic as they were back in 1995. According to sources Confidential Mission is decent.
I bought a DC pack with Sonic Adventure for $60.

So I went to play my recent aquisition Fire ProWrestling D.
After replacing the boot disc with the game disc and seeing the Dreamcast logo, then the Sega logo, the screen stayed black.
It seemed as if the TV wasn't receiving a video signal because the "A/V" logo was in the corner of the screen, which happens when nothing is plugged in or on.
What gives?
Not sure, although, with the amount of DC importing you're doing, you should probably look at buying an NTSC unit.

I know he's just starting and everyone needs to start somewhere, but I just wouldn't go buying a Jap Dreamcast for large sums of money from him/her. Now I've always considered the Dreamcast a solid console, but today was the first time I was impressed by it, when I played UFC.
Now I'm a big Mixed Martial Arts fan, so I've played the lot (excluding the Tapout 1 & 2, have no XBOX) and UFC on DC outdoes them all, and is only bettered by Pride FC on PS2; which funnily enough was also made by Anchor.
The graphics while lacking a little polish beat those of Throwdown and Sudden Impact on PS2 by a long way, and the entire presentation is top notch. Most importantly this game is faster than all of them, even Pride FC... although this might be a NTSC thing, I'm not sure. After playing UFC on DC, all the others felt slower (Pride FC) to downright sluggish (Sudden Impact).
I can definitely see why this game was raved about upon its release.

I've wasted a lot of time reading through this thread at work. Even though it's already been mentioned a few times, I'd just like to emphasise how much Under Defeat rocks. It's simple old school fun (2 buttons, shoot and screen obliterating bomb) with stunning graphics that are comparable to today's standards (barring the 360 of course). Anyone who owns a DC with even a passing interest in schmups should pick one up now before stocks run out and the cost sky-rockets to Border Down-like levels (G.rev's previous classic).
Also, earlier in the thread there was some mean things said about the VMU. I think the VMU was an underrated little device that never reached it's full potential. Do you guys remember when Amuze was in the early stages of development of their Metal-Gear-Solid-killer Headhunter, they were toying with the possibility of synchronising the Dreamcast's and VMU's internal clocks so that when real time events occured in the game world, even if the dreamcast was turned off, your VMU would let you know, acting as a pager for the game world. Can you imagine how much you would feel immersed in the game world, you're talking with your mates and your VMU beeps, you look at the screen and an in game character has sent you a message and wants to meet you tonight at 8:00. Later that night you're stuck at a family dinner and you get another page at 8:00 "Where are you?" It's a shame that it never made it in the final game.

Thank god for my DC. My 360 just died (disk reading thingy) for the second time and I was unable to do a straight swap this time. I had to send it to M$. I almost think it was a good thing to happen as I hooked my DC up to my gaming monitor and got into some Under Defeat action tate style.
Best shmup of all time I reckon.
I also got into a little Crazy Taxi 2, Ooga Booga and SFA 3......good times..

Under Defeat is not only one of the best shmup's but also one of the best games of all time. There's something undeniably special about it, yet you can't quite put your finger on why. The game is just so balanced, so polished and honed to perfection and it's gorgeous to look at to boot.
How far are you into Under Defeat? Have you finished both 1.0 and 2.0? I got stuck on the final boss for a few weeks but I persevered and manages to finish it eventually. Now just to work on 100% kill ratio for each level. I've managed it on Level 1-1 and 1-2 so far, and then I got side-tracked with Twilight Princess and Beggar Prince.
I'm also eagerly awaiting Last Hope and Trigger Heart Exelica, which should hopefully arrive next week.

I've only got back into it recently but last time I was into up to my eye-balls I came close to finishing but didn't manage it. :madshake:.
As for Trigger Heart after seeing some vids, I'm not sure it really appeals to me. It seems to rely on the capture/throw the enemy gimick. I'd much rather a straight-up shooter. If Karous wasn't coming out a week or so after TH, I'd grad it just cause it's a DC release. I still may grab it later.
Oh and Old Stoney, if you haven't already, grab yourself a copy of Ooga Booga. It was an NTSC release only but can be picked up for next to nicks off ebay-us. I'd actually love to see a 360 version release. It would be ace on live.

Here's hoping for the already prolonged death throes of the DC to last another couple of years. I don't mind seeing my console beg for retirement ("but the godamned snes had a quick death", it argues). If the games keep comin', the unit will stay hooked up!

Anyone got their hands on Last Hope and/or Trigger Heart yet? I've been very happy with both so far, but I'm easily pleased. It took some time to adjust to Last Hope's more sedate pace compared to other DC shooter's I've been playing lately, but I'm loving the different feel. It's like R-type on steroids and it's bloody tough. Expect to die repeatedly. Trigger Heart is also spending a lot of time in the 'cast. I'm loving the presentation and the catchy music - I can't get the first level's BGM out of my head. Like Cranky said, it uses the capture and throw gimic, which I've never experienced before. I quite like it, but I agree it does dilute the pure shooter expereince slightly but I'm liking it's uniqueness. The final battle which requires you capturing falling debris and flinging it at a maelstrom of swirling bullets in an attempt to rescue your comrade was an exhilarating experience.
I got notification that Play Asia received an early shipment of Karous which filled 40% of it's pre-orders, mine included. I should get what could be the Dreamcast's last official game by the end of the week.

Oh guys, you gotta play Cosmic Smash! It's not deep nor complex, but I'll be damned if it isn't the coolest game I've seen in a long time.
It's the bastard love child of Rez, Breakout and Virtua Tennis.

It's the bastard love child of Rez, Breakout and Virtua Tennis. I think I had a dodgy copy of that. Looks cool. Thats for sure. But Id rather play Virtua Tennis, MArio Tennis .....or even breakout on my Atari 2600.

SEGA, geniuses before their time. I think that article is stretching it a bit in places.
You could compare SEGA's handheld outings to the SONY PSP. Graphically superior, battery drainer, not doing that well. So are SONY Geniuses before their time?
I hope SEGA come back with a vengence. They need a few new game franchises, and they need to quit Sonic for a while. Keep him on the handhelds until they work out what makes a good 3D platformer.
And they need to keep using Treasure to develop some of their games.
Im really enjoying the SEGA AGES range on the PS2. Started off as SHIT but since about volume 18 it has been great. So far its been Genesis, Master System and Saturn titles. Hoping Dreamcast titles are coming soon. Next titles due out the door are Galaxy Force II and Virtual-On.
Question: Does the SEGA developer 'Smilebit' still exaist?

What happened to the Dreamcast appreciation thread? Anyway, I'm getting back into the Dreamcast these days. I've been playing the excellent Sword of the Berserk: Guts Rage which is still as epic as I remember with its amazing soundtrack, massive battles and hugely entertaining cutscenes (featuring some of the best voice acting you'll hear in a game). The gameplay is a bit simpler than I remember, and the boss fights are retarded (you can just stand there and press the attack button in a lot of cases) but it's still great fun and a must-play if you own the little white box.
I've just bought a copy of Toy Commander off ebay which I never had the chance to play. Really looking forward to it. It sounds very unique and received great reviews. Next on my buy list is Illbleed, Re-volt, Ecco, Crazy Taxi...Too many to list. :P Dreamcast...Oh how I love thee.

Toy commander was actually a surprisingly fun little game that got sadly over looked by most DC owners. Enjoy!!

Merged because Lobby fails at searching :D
I spent ages exploring in the demo of Toy Commander - really should track down a copy some time.

I had lot of fun playing Toy Commander. Damn it was a hard game though. If you can't track it down on the DC, the ps2 has a similar looking called Helicopter. Don't know how good it is though!

Soul Calibur was so ahead of its time. Most gorgeous looking launch title that puts later gen titles to shame. the attention to detail in this game was so fine. I remember err... Sofia slashing her sword around would make the opponents clothes move from the wind. Awesome game!

I wonder why.

Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) developed by Bizarre Creations is the predecessor to PGR on Xbox, and the first game in the the series.
Although I like Dekar's post better.
