Quake live beta has gone live.

http://www.quakelive.com/

Good ol' quake 3 fun, the game is the same as ever minus gore and that doesn't really matter. The integration is a little questionable at the moment but it all works and it's all fun. And free!

...could you actually explain what this is? I can't find an FAQ. I'm assuming id decided to get with 2006 and create a Java/Shockwave FPS?

You play Quake 3 inside a web browser, has all the bells and whistles we expect from games these days. Also free. I tried it in the closed beta and I thought it was pretty nifty but found that despite it being in your web browser you still need to install shit.

Fenrir

What's it actually use, Java? Some sort of browser-plugin virtual machine? (based on the you-have-to-install-shite but, I'd almost wager the latter)

SOX

Some browser plugin you have to install to get it going. Then when you log in to play it downloads the content as you need it.

it's a 3 meg .msi file. Takes no time and I doubt it's malicious in anyway. Runs brilliantly. I could be wrong but I don't think it looks quite as good as standard Quake 3 did back in the day but that's not the point.

you reckon? I thought it looked exactly the same, with added shiny effect.

I tried joining and now I am #15027 in a queue. Looks like its real q3 for me.

I downloaded and got into it today, and I'm loving it.
Although the first few games i had were lag free, after i came back later i had massive lag - but all my internets seem to be lagging atm, so its probably on my side.

I'm Kefka_QL on there, playing some bot matches atm.

No sign of queues here.

I hate to nitpick but since Q3 is PS2 era, and this is essentially a modern game coming out on PC, shouldn't this be in PC General?
Oh BTW I'm Clockw0rk on Quake Live. I've had a few queues but they tend to clear themselves within 5min or so. Good game - It's Quake 3, it's free, and it's in browser. What more could one ask for?

Lag doesn't seem to be a huge issue either, even in NZ.

PS2 is from a bygone era, my friend. It's time to move on. ;)

Doubt I'll get the time to play it though.

Quake 3 PS2 era? Are you high? Quake 3 was first and foremost a PC game.

This is retro gaming in the new era. Let Retroactive have something, save the other sections for all the crap new games that come out.

Kefka
02-03-2009, 12:27 PM
Eh, I don't think this should be in the retro forum really. Yes, Q3A came out a while ago, but Quake Live is new. Sure it's largely the same game, but that's beside the point. It's a PC game, in a form which has just been released.

And hell, the PC Gaming forum desc mentions Populous - the last major released of which (on PC) was in 1998. A year earlier than Q3A. So nyer.

Anyhow, I've been rocking along happily! I encountered a queue one time, but it was a case of going from 2000 to in within 5 or 10 mins, so I'm not fussed. It's also not hard to idle in the lobby, occasionally reloading the server list to avoid idling out.

Fenrisulvur; but I've had a few glitches mid-game, overheats etc, and it'll be a good 4 weeks atleast before I have a gaming-worthy net connection, so don't count on me playing much.

I'm not sure what I think of it overall. The game's in good shape, but like SOX said, you have to install stuff to get it going. Also, it's operating system dependent (Mac OS X and Linux versions still being in the pipeline), whick kind-of voids the whole point of using the web browser as a platform in the first place. They may as well have avoided the convoluted web browser tie-in, as far as I can tell.

I also didn't like the lack of gibs.

SOX
02-03-2009, 06:50 PM
Yeah I agree Fenrir, the fact you have to install a Windows specific plugin defeats the purpose of playing it in your web browser completely. But I guess that point will be moot when the Mac/Linux plugins are released.
Lack of gibs is definetly noticable too.

Kefka
03-03-2009, 07:42 PM
I've been loving it - had some epic games today which were "you have taken the lead" "you are tied for the lead" "you have lost the lead" back and forth all the way.

I briefly noticed the lack of gibs to begin with, but in the end I got over it pretty quick... It no doubt makes it easier on older PCs, easier for classification, and the "evaporating soul" effect they replaced them with does remind you of the sort of "virtual gladiator arena" thing.

I think I've had a single crash, but nothing unrecoverable... The biggest glitch I notice is sometimes not seeing the end of game scoreboard after a match.

I guess the Windows only thing does lessen the browser-based thing, but not all that much, really - Windows still has a massive market share, and it supports the major browsers in that share.

Played it some more, very impressed and I think it's a great way to make a classic game modern and relevant!

EDIT: I don't understand though why my profile doesn't update, I've played a bunch of games and it still shows me as having played none :( profile is SOXINTHEBOX if anyone cares.

Just gave this a go. Kicked arse in the training bit, joined a real match and lasted an average of about 4 seconds before dying.

This x1000

Still fun, but in no way are players of equal skill playing the same match.

Stats were offline for a bit for performance tweaking, theyre back now. :) Go get some achievements! ;)

I've been rocking along - yeah, sometimes you get into matches where everyone else seems to pwn you all over, but I've gotten into plenty of tight fought ones :)

Joined up a few days ago and am quite impressed so far although i have come across a bug when playing on my laptop ( running Vista and IE8) and my mouse doesnt move within the game window, quite frustrating...
As for the few of you having a whine about having to download a plugin for it to run, its a meazly 3meg and as simple as running a .exe to install... stop bitchin and get fragging!
Btw stat tracking was removed due to a maintinace update and is now back online in its majority.

You have to download over 250mb to actually have any content...

Is that after alt tabbing out and then trying to click back in? I had that a bit, but the latest update has fixed it.

They also fixed the bug that sometimes made the final score screen fail to appear at the end of a match. :D

Kefka_QL on there :)

Played this today for about 3 hours straight after/while watching Good Game (where they pimped it good).

Good fun, even though I'm terrible at quake (only ever played offline single player before).

Great fun! Just tried it out with Surg and Slip. We managed to hold our own too, despite Slip and I never having played a Quake game before. Bonesaw duels ftw!

Anyone still play this / want to play this?

I get the feeling that no-one visits retroactive too much. Any chance of moving this to pc gaming?

Playing Quake last night was actually a whole lot more fun than I anticipated. Would love to have an all Hyper game some time.
