L4D Hyper vs. PCPP Fridays @ 8:30

G'day

I'm planning on running this over the next four weeks, running a different versus campaign each week.

So I need three players for PCPP and four for Hyper plus a reserve each.

I considered doing a first come first serve but then thought it might be better to base it off post count so that veterans get first pick for the first week.

After the first round teams will have to decide week to week if they want to keep their existing team composition from the previous week or boot someone out.

After each round the winning team can choose a Most Valuable Player and I will gift them a game via Steam up to the value of $5US.

At the end of the four weeks we all (both teams) vote for a Most Valuable Player (from the winning team) and I will gift them a game of their choice via Steam up to the value of $20US.


If at the end we have a two way tie then there will be a sudden death mode the following week (I'm not sure if the survival mode is versus or not, we'll have to see what the content patch provides).

To keep things tidy I will post all server info into this original post, and update scores accordingly.

Also bear in mind that I will be running two threads (one PCPP, one Hyper) so unless you're reading both you may miss some banter.

Server password will be sent out to individual players at 8pm that night to prevent unwanteds jumping in. There will be a new password each week.

Hands up if you want to play. I will give until Thursday 8:30pm before I finalise the first team.

Closet/corner camping is not allowed either. If one person wants to hide in the bed corner in NM4 then that's fine, but no more than one. Likewise with NM2 at the minigun.

And that's all I've ever played with. Hopefully enough to field a team. How good are the PCPP guys? Need to know whether to bring lube.


Also, how do we handle disconnects? My internet has been playing up of late, and I'd almost certainly drop at least once per game.

Does it crash with TF2, or other games? I'd probably be trying to figure out if it's just a problem with L4D, Valve games, or games in general.

Any chance that it's an overheating issue?

Just jump back in? But what's the etiquette on the other team? Wait til they rejoin? Or just play on? The problem is, when I DC it leaves my character stationary for about 30secs to a minute before I actually DC and a bot takes over. Needless to say, this can ruin a perfectly fine round. Last time it happened, I had just spawned as the tank (after Surg lost control). We then lost the tank to the AI. If I'm a survivor it obviously renders us one player down for a minute or two, which is all it takes to be wiped out by a co-ordinated team. And I'm not the only one this happens to... I'd like to suggest some sort of 'emergency AFK' etiquette where Infected leave Survivors alone and Survivors don't move until the player has rejoined. Obviously this won't work everywhere (during finales or events), but it should help a little bit.

How much interest is there at PCPP? Enough for two teams? No need to make four people miss out if there's that much interest - just have two games. There's plenty of free servers generally that we can just jump on. And obviously you wouldn't need to foot the bill for two prizes, Webster :p

GameArena? Oh god, stay away. We could just jump on an emtpy Internode server, get everyone to join real quick, then VoteKick anyone else who joins. Not as of 45 minutes ago. Some of us have been playing the beta version on PC though, and yeah it's pretty fun. Hope it's balanced, there were a few areas that were quite OP (I think on the first map we'd smoker pull one off, then run a boomer on there while they were being pulled who'd knock people off - killing at least one guy in the process).

I'm eager to see if survival mode is any fun. It's apparently quite short so it might be good to do if you can't commit to a full versus/campaign.

Woah woah woah **** that, I was the first Hyper on server and your guys were allready tooling around when I got on.

Edit: Patch is up, got a lot of bug fixes as well - no more infected spawn timers at the start of the match, join during finale, repeatedly recalculating score at the end of the round (which we got the other day).

I think my fave moment was our perfectly executed first strike at the start of the first map on the bridge. Everyone did brilliantly there. Which was then followed up with my well-supported tank that sent everyone flying.

Never fun playing against four super co-ordinated people with two people who are vaguely co-ordinated (at the best of times), one person we've never played with before (Cer) and one person joining halfway through (Syt). We were pretty much a shambles after team leader Spud left, and mass raging ensued.

A shame Spud's ping rendered him pretty useless for the first few rounds (fave moment was seeing him throw a molotov at where the tank was 3 seconds ago, and swearing he should have hit it), and he had to leave. Oh well.

Yeah, I dunno how many peeps will actually be up for it. Myself, Surg and Slip are kinda over the whole thing. It seems too hard to properly co-ordinate four experienced people who are able to play the whole campaign (the only time we managed it thus far was for Dead Air), and the three of us have been finding L4D less and less fun since this whole 'Friday night' thing began.

So yes - we'll see how we go, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Of course, some of the other Hyper guys might be more up for it than we are, but it's hard enough getting four guys to play it including us three.

You forgot:

Round 5: Syt stays because he's a great guy and three pugs join to help complete the final round. Syt + three pugs wipe PCPP team on the second tank, before having their turn as survivors. Syt + three pugs get cleanly to the end of the map (like 4 up with 2-3 kits), but lose two people right at the end due to (1) being smokered and (2) trying to rescue and getting killed by tank. Syt + three pugs beat PCPP on finale.

Admittedly, PCPP probably were a better (or equal) team than me and the pugs, but they had a bad tank strat (stay in the house) whereas we had a good one (stay outside and dodge the ****ing log!). I think Hyper are all pretty good but someone really needed to take a leadership role to ensure we all stuck together, teamwork as infected was pretty poor.

FTR, I normally play with three friends on vent who are all v.good at the game and I'm getting sick of it from being on the "always winning" side. Being so sick of winning, actually losing was a nice change (hence why I stayed). The game would really benefit from some kind of skill-based matchup system or team record keeping to ensure that equally skilled teams are paired. I can't remember the last "close" match I had.

When WE Surg and I play this is pretty much the reason we lose (not that we lose a lot or anything).
