View Full Version : The iPhone Gaming Thread

Considering iPhone gaming is on the rise, and becoming a great medium for 'casual' gaming, it'd be great if we had a thread to concentrate solely on that aspect of the device... so here it is!
This is the place to discuss new and upcoming releases, your opinions on those releases, and hopefully recommendations for the other iPhone users on the forum. This can probably extend to general apps for the phone also.
I haven't looked around much for actual iPhone gaming review sites, but for the commercially inclined, IGN offers iPhone game reviews, and so do these guys (http://www.appleiphoneapps.com/). Any other suggestions?
My quick pics so far for;
Free Games -
Tap Tap Revenge
21 Pro (if you like blackjack)
Sol Free (solitaire)
Paid Games -
Rolando
Texas Hold'Em
Bejeweled 2

I'll sound off later to reiterate my rants in the iPhone thread, but I just wanted to pop in and say that an update for Wolfenstein 3D Classic just dropped, and it sounds like it has some great control customisation options, so for those that have already made the plunge, grab the update.
The main sites I check for iPhone game news are Touch Arcade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEbmoOP4LHk) (has a great blog, forums and info on new apps/price drops) and Slide To Play (http://www.slidetoplay.com/) (good reviews).
On that note, this Diablo clone Underworld (http://toucharcade.com/2009/04/16/pixel-mines-action-rpg-underworlds-coming-soon/) could have some potential.

I'm tempted to get the Rogue game. Last time I played it was 1987, with ASCI characters instead of graphics, I was savagely interested in it and used to go over to these people's house to play it. I didn't like the people all that much. Their computer spontaneously caught fire while I was playing the game and then they didn't like me much either. True story.
I have a strong suspicion though that the game will turn out to be shit and I'll have pissed away $4 and a childhood memory.

TBH, I think that's largely true based on my purchase, but Rogue Touch (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=303471870&mt=8) is on sale at the moment, so at worst case scenario, you can't be too pissed about losing out at $1.19. If it was an obsession, you'll probably get a kick out of it.

I don't think the Ipod touch was made to handle complex 3d graphics, it plays ok, but i'll stick to simple 2d games.

It's good... not amazing, but good.
I have always prefered Nethack to Rogue specifically so that is why I'm not raving about it but it still has the same 'just one more level' quality all quests for the Amulet of Yendor have.

At the moment I have (and enjoy):
iDracula
Bejeweled 2
Labrinth
Field Runners
And I just picked up Bookworm. I always eye the tetris game very closely but I've always resisted because 1) It appears to have some extra bits like power ups and 2) I'm not convinced that the level of precise control that I crave for tetris would be available on a touch screen. Interested to here if anyone has enjoyed it (serious tetris players need respond only).

It actually works very well. Dropping blocks precisely can be a bit tricky to begin with as you get the hang of the downward drop motion but once you have that down it is Tetris as you know and love. the power up thingies are only in one game mode. The other mode is pure oldschool Tetris.

I bought Bookworm last night, and this is its most frustrating aspect for me. There's a lot of words that are real but aren't in its dictionary. I'm kind of hoping they incorporate the official Scrabble dictionary or something to fill in the gaps.
I actually failed a game because it wouldn't accept the word 'tit'.
What makes it worse is that the game accepts some proper nouns, but not others. I don't get why that is.
Hopefully future updates will expand the dictionary, because despite this major flaw, it's a great game.

I'm working my way through getting all the book words. Currently up to fruit I think.
The really annoying thing is when you get a word and then quit and it doesn't save the word you got.
I also found that it's not very good at keeping your highscore. I got around 520,000 the other day but the next time that I loaded the game it'd put my highscore down to 490,000. Weird.

Wolfenstein 3D
The controls aren't great. Can anyone recommend a control scheme?
I favoured using the customisable controls, and having move/turn on one stick with strafe on the other, because that mimiced the keyboard controls I played the original with. I do still find it pretty slippery to control, and haven't put too much time into it.
For those that haven't coughed up yet, Wolfenstein 3D Classic (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=309470478&mt=8) is on sale at the moment for $2.49, and you can grab the Lite Version (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=313423706&mt=8) to check it out.
One title I've been having a lot of fun with is Sky Burger (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=311972587&mt=8), which has you catching falling burger ingredients to create special orders. The real hook is great accelerometer control and a very balanced progression of difficulty. Well worth a look for $1.19.
There are a few new free 'Lite' versions available too. A couple I'd reccommend checking out are Drop 7 Lite (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312900581&mt=8[/url), and interesting combination of number and block puzzles, and Metal Gear Solid Touch Lite (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312622285&mt=8), which needs no introduction, but gives you a taste of the gameplay before you take the plunge.

My latest purchases:
WWII Alone (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=313531394&mt=8)
A very solid tap-shooter that mimics Cabal (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7252)/Blood Brothers (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7163). The perk system isn't particularly well implimented (comes off more like a shop), and your thumbs can obscure the action if you're not careful, but the difficulty provides a great challenge.
Price: $1.19
Rating: ***1/2 (Out of 5)
Flight Control (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=306220440&mt=8)
Made by Aussie company Firemint, this one's as good as everyone says it is. Use supurb touchscreen control to guide aircraft in to land, but try to avoid an air disaster in the progressively-busier skies. One of those titles you'll keep trying to beat your high score, and great for a quick bash.
Price: $1.19

Absolutely brilliant.
This is a perfect port of the PC title. The game has really taken advantage of the iPhone's unique controls.
My first concern was making small tweaks to direction of fire but this is easy for three reasons:
- If you touch at the bottom of the screen you have much finer control over where it goes.
- There is a rotating dial which can be used in the same way as the mouse wheel in the PC version could be used for fine tuning aim.
- Double tapping the screen will zoom in on the action
Beyond this there is no percievable difference between this and the PC version of Peggle.
If you like Peggle and want to play it on the go then grab this now!!

No music during levels and apparently it doesn't have all of the challenge levels, which seems weird since I can't image they would have added a lot to the file size.

doodlejump (high score - 41164)
bookworm (can't seem to break 200,000...)
galcon (kinda like a realtime space version of risk. has online play!)
picross touch
ragdoll blast
Also noteworthy:
flight control
Lux Dlx (risk. suffers from lack of campaign)
Dr. Awesome
Dropship (great controls!)
Knights
UPDATE!
'bloons' is pretty sweet and is on sale atm

Yeah, I bought it as soon as it went on sale. The gameplay is pretty good, but I seriously hate on-screen D-Pads. Seems very imprecise, and makes me go the wrong way more often than not. Took a lot of practice to get it sorted out.
The script and characters are pretty terrible. It feels like the entire thing was written by an eight-year-old.
The level progression is also pretty unbalanced. After I entered the second city I was sent to hunt Level 18 enemies (when I was level 7). Grind grind grind.
Would I recommend it? Only if you're a diehard fan of RPGs.

Yeah, I wouldn't call Zenonia polished. Just because it looks like a classic game doesn't mean it plays like one. The controls are simply atrocious.

Just went back into the game and looked at my high score and it only recorded 1,700,000 for some reason..stupid game.Same for me. It only recorded 1,500,000 or so rather than the 1,600,000+ that I actually got. Maybe the score reverts to what you'd accumulated at the time of your 'level up'? Can anyone confirm or deny this theory?
My problem with Bookworm now is that even though I could surely beat my last score, it will take so long to get there again that I can't be bothered. I played it feverishly until setting that score, but it took several hours of play to do so, hours that could now be better spent.

Didnt see what all the fuss was about. Took me about an hour maybe to have bought everything, hire the 2 people, rent the most expensive place, and still make $400+ profit each day.
I also bought Duke Nukem 3D. Ive only had a small play around with it so far but Im having some trouble getting to grips with the controls. So far the D-pad like setup seems the best suited to me, but I didnt really buy it to play all the way through, mainly for nostalgia sake.
Also finished Trace. This game was brilliant. Lots of fun for a free title and such a simple concept.
EDIT:
Just bought Geodefense which was recommended to me previously in the thread. Absolutely. Brilliant. Been playing it for an hour since I bought it and I dont want to stop.

I finally picked up the tetris game. It's a very polished game but it has two fatal flaws.
1. The normal mode finishes after level 15. I had one play through, and that was it. Bogus.
2. The touch screen controls are just not quite precise enough. That said I did once go through a tetris phase where I played several hours every day so my standards might be a bit higher than some other people.

Been playing World War on my iPhone. It's a free application at the moment and it's a basic strategy game where you have energy points that you spend on doing missions, buy troops, buildings, etc and attack other players. You can share 'Alliance' codes and build up a type of support network. Very similar to Special Forces on Facebook (and Mafia War, I'm assuming, but I don't play it). It does access the internet a fair bit, but since I hardly use any of my data plan.
My Alliance is 2MMPAG if anyone wants to join in. It's free (apart from the internet usage) so you may was well go for it.

Firemint (fyi; the Victorian dev' who made that Flight Control game) have made a tidy little racing game in Real Racing. Its the first one I've encountered where its not a battle to control the car, mainly due to the neat cockpit view and horizon tilt making accelerometer steering quite a breeze. After a few practice laps I was running smooth laps in no time.
There's no licensed content, but what's included mimics real world racing close enough. I've haven't checked it out yet, but apparently it has a pretty decent online community too. There are limitations to the driving of course, its certainly no Forza or GT, and it's auto shift only. But there are a variety of control schemes to suit individual preferences, and the on screen controls are brilliantly implemented as they aren't permanently on-screen; they'll quickly fade in and out when you place or move your fingers on the screen.
Well worth the $9

Also grabbed Tap Tap Revenge 3 tonight. Sadly though they're moving more and more towards a micro-transaction model. The inital download was only $2, but it only came with 3 tracks, and many of the decent downloadable tracks are arranged into packs you pay a fee for (for example a 6 track Smashing Pumpkins pack was $4, a 2 track Rise Against pack was $2). I grabbed a free AFI track (Medicate) and it feels like they've upped the difficulty slightly; a hard track was actually a little hard.
Great thing about the downloadable tracks though is each band has its own skin theme, so no more looking at the same visuals through every song.

Grabbed it last night and gave it about 20-30 minutes. The intro movie is made of the comic that was released with the original PC version. Its been spliced into a motion comic - sorta like they did for Watchmen (though its kinda weird to hear a wise old aboriginal man speak with a proper english accent). The interface can be a little tricky, especially when trying to use an object on a hotpost in close poximity to another hotspot, but if you learn to see the visual cues (spot stops throbbing, object gains a blue outline) you'll won't suffer too much frustration. They've also included a similar hint system to that of Broken Sword: Director's Cut.

there is simplified squading according to Touch Arcade (http://toucharcade.com/2009/10/09/command-conquer-red-alert-hands-on-preview-with-video/)
As for BASS if you didn't have to drag items to use them it would be so much easier.

I used on screen brake/accelerator with accelerometer steering, it took some adjusting and is easier to control in the cockpit view. Just have to keep movement smooth and subtle, don't overdo the steering and remember to steer out when you pass the apex.

yeah i have found the cockpit view works the best. although annoyingly with the touch finger steering theres seems times where it will just not respond, i think if you slide too far it resets itself, and you end up ploughing into the wall. annoying when you are winning a race.

Bejeweled 2 has been in the top ten ever since I had an iPhone, must be a reason for it though I haven't bought it. Everything Popcap makes is ****ing gold though it seems, peggle is on iPhone but probably not worth buying a second time if you already have it on another platform.
I bought one called Dungeon Scroll the other day, which is basically bookworm but timed, where the words you form are damage spells against monster. It's... well it's a bit shit actually but it's not TOO shit, I don't regret buying it, I just wish there was a bit more to it. It is not, by my definition, an RPG, because there's almost no item gathering or character customization of note. You CAN, however, choose to upgrade certain stats when you take out a boss monster - the game offers you a (seemingly random) choice between two offered bonuses out of a range of it seems 4 or 5 - extra life points, do extra damage, enemies have less damage, increase odds of getting bonus tiles.
The game has international leaderboards which is a point in it's favour and it's certainly worth the few bucks if you like bookworm-style word games but it could stand a little more development to make it A grade like Puzzle Quest.

Recently installed Secret of Monkey Island Lite for my ipod touch and was more than a little disappointed.
Especially after playing a PC copy of the game, the ipod touch game seems like a seriously B-Grade port of the original.
The item menu bar takes up a hefty chunk of the screen and really detracts from the overall presentation and it's all the worse considering the screen is so small.
The touch controls were pretty flakey and certain commands like zoom and change from classic to HD mode are too similar and I was always hitting one when I needed the other.
Having to open up that freaking menu to select which command you want to use talk/touch/pick up every time you want to use something shat me up the wall.
I still think the new HD graphics are ugly too.
So pretty much I won't be getting the full version.

I bought Let's Golf! last night, and this is one hell of an iPhone game. It only costs $2.49 and you're pretty much getting Everybody's Golf (Hot Shots Golf) on the PSP. It's a hefty download at 83 meg, but it's got 4 full 18 hole courses with beautiful graphics and spot-on controls, pure Gameloft quality. It's also got a bunch of unlockables to aim for as well.
I'm hoping for some more courses in the future, cos any update is getting my hard earned (cupla bucks)
This one comes highly recommended, and there's a lite version too (62 meg though...)
EDIT: Laz, I bought BaSS too. Haven't got far into it (pretty much just started it and had a little play around), but it looks like $6 very well spent.

I love golf games, for $2.50 sounds great.
I also got beneath a steel sky, seems pretty good, controls a bit better than Monkey Island too, I like how it highlights things you can interact with as you move your finger over the screen. And how you kind of "lock" into something to interact with, makes things a whole lot easier, especially compared with Monkey Island.
Does anyone know if there's plans to release Full Throttle too? That's one of the few lucas arts adventure games I haven't played yet.

You're having a laugh, surely Blue. The vast majority of reviews on iTunes are overwhelmingly positive too. Each to their own though. If you hated it at least you only wasted $2.50
I'll have to try Tiger Woods too, golf and the iPhone go together like whisky and hookers

I've just bought Perfect Balance: Harmony, has anyone else got this?
It's a great little physics-based 'shape-stacking' puzzle game. Apparently it's an expanded port of a popular flash game. Basically, you're given a set number of different shapes that you have to, one by one, balance on the designated fixed platforms.
It starts out straightforward enough, but after about level 20 or so, you're assembling some pretty precariously and delicately balanced towers. The game not only requires some deft touchwork, but also some lateral thinking.
It only costs $1.19, is a 3.5 meg download, has over 100 levels and is addictive as hell.
There's a free lite version too with the first 15 levels on it to give you a real taste of what the game's all about.

I don't understand why people would want to buy Rock Band or Guitar Hero on the DS, iPhone or any phone for that matter. A lot of the fun of those types of games come from looking like you're playing the guitar or drums or whatever and rocking out with your cock out. It just looks like your masterbating when you play it on the smaller systems.

Never play DJ Max Portable on PSP?
The mechanics of hitting buttons in time to a song are still the same, as they have been since rhythm games gained prominence (think Parappa). Not every one of them requires pantomiming with a plastic instrument.
My only complaint is that anything below Hard on Tap Tap is a waste of time. And due to songs being available based on difficulty is limits your options.

The cost of apps will go up, is the only difference it will make, and releases delayed. But it'll employ a boatload of otherwise pointless shirt-stuffers so any government would be mad not to pursue this over, say, proper healthcare.

I guess I've always seen RB and GH as psudeo-rock star sort of games and if you can't jump up and down and move around a bit while listening to it really, really loud, it's just not worth doing.

So while I was trying to get my pc to un**** itself over this weekend, I finally played through Resident Evil Degeneration. It's ok I guess.

Not sure. I thought the idea of a RE4 (port?) on iPhone was... unlikely to be worth discussion.

I'm liking RE4. The levels are basically lite versions of areas from the game proper, and the enemies even have the same character animations.
Also there's still treasure collecting/selling/weapon upgrading.

Just checked out the Revolution forums, posts from Tony Warriner indicate that Broken Sword: Director's Cut is headed to the iPhone early next year.
It looks like they'll reinstate George's mortality for it too, which was removed from the DS/Wii versions.
If they release it at the same price as iBASS, then I'll probably get it despite already owning it on DS. The DS version lacked voices anyways >_>

Hopefully they release the sequels on the iPhone too. I'd much prefer paying $6 than $50 on DS. Having said that, I hope a heap more point and clicks make it to the platform, maybe a Police Quest anthology pack or Space Quest pack, Day of the Tentacle, etc.

The difference being Revolution are putting some effort in by making them work somewhat with the platform. Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer are average ports at best due to the inclusion of the SCUMM interface taking up a fair chunk of screen real estate.
Flight of the Amazon Queen is as good a port as Revolution's efforts.

Nice! Wish I had checked this earlier, but sooner is better than later... and free games are always good.
I also just went on a small app binge, purchasing the following;
Spider - Fun game... wouldn't know what to classify it as, puzzle/platformer? Anyway, you're a spider who progresses levels by eating the insects in that level. This is mainly achieved by creating webs, with the puzzle element added by way of limited strands you can use to create your webs and the way score multipliers work. It's quirky but fun and has a nice style. Apparently there's supposed to be a sub story to it regarding the old inhabitants of the mansion you're running around, but i'm yet to really feel like that's the case.
Azkend - A fantastic puzzle game... similar to hexic. Great presentation and use of 'power ups'. Lite version available to try it out.
Cluedo - Based off the board game, but not a board game... more like Carmen San Diego really. Still fun, and the cartoon style is very nice. Can be a bit of a guessing game at times, but i'm not sure if that's because i'm not picking up the clues (or where to look for them) or there's something lacking with the game. Worth a look if you're into Carmen.
2010 SMH Good Food Guide - A MUST for anyone in NSW (Sydney mainly) that loves dining out. Incredibly well presented application, with all of the reviews in the published guide and MUCH more functionality. I love this app and it is easily my #1. $12 seems expensive for the app store, but it's less than half the price of the actual published guide and does so much more.

It's because the 3G network is still balls when it comes to speed, so downloading a file over 10Mb could potentially take up a long time and use up all the phone's resources.
It is annoying though, I agree.

So anyway I've been trying out some of the bluetooth multiplayer games up against the gf.
The trick is that both our iPhones are linked to my itunes account so you only have to pay for an app once to put it on both phones (the downside is that I have a whole lot of ridiculous medical apps).
Anyway, what I've tried out so far is:
Touch4 - Connect 4. If you love connect 4 you will love this. I am undefeated after about 30 games. Also I have to sleep on the couch now.
FingerFoos - Foosball type soccer game. You can only see your half of the field and only have a single person you control. Not great but can play up to 3 player.
FS5 Hockey. - Air hockey. Pretty decent, but the controls take a while to get used to.
Connecting to bluetooth can be a bit of a pain. Apparently turning off other things like 3G and wireless makes it easier, but there were several times where we would play one game and then switch to another only for it to stop working completely. Turning both phones off and back on seemed to fix things though.

So a few apps I've purchased recently:
Ninja Assassin
Apparently a movie tie-in (never heard about the film), I really want to like this game. Excellent presentation and deliciously violent, unfortunately the controls - which weren't bad in theory - let it down. If anyone knows how to kill the chainsaw dude, please tell me.
Photoshop Mobile
Bare bones photo editing tool, but very slick and very easy to use. It lets you:
- Crop/Rotate/Flip
- Alter Exposure/Saturation/Tint/Black & White
- Apply a sketch filter/soft focus
- Apply a bunch of preset edits (Vibrant/White Border/Vignette Blur/Soft B&W/etc)
Best of all, it is free
Beaterator
Haven't really delved too much into this. Its a straight port of the PSP utility, however it lacks the studio mode, so you are stuck with the preset loops and samples. Hence I haven't bothered with it too much. Not bad for $6
F.A.S.T.
Awesome Ace Combat-ish jet fighter game. Slick presentation and gyro controls that really work. It got huge plaudits on IGN for a great online mode, but I haven't tried it. Only downside is it appears additional planes (default there are 2) are only available through additional purchases. Seems to be the growing trend for iPhone games.
Beatmaker
Holy f*** this is deep. This is essentially Fruity Loops Studio on your iPhone, a comprehensive music creation tool with a tremendous amount of versatility. I'll definitely have to investigate the immense PDF manual to get to grips with this. Hefty asking price at $23, but well worth it if you're into creating sounds.
