In related news, I just grinded for a couple of hours to get all my Pokemon to lvl 40 for the Elite 4.
Go to roughly level 50 with all of your pokemon. It is better to be stronger just in case the last few pokemon trainers are tough as hell.

Apparently this is how you'd want your Alakazam:
http://www.psypokes.com/dex/psydex/065/movesets
I disagree with Slot 3 though, because you dont need a move to be fire on a psychic if you got a fire type already in your main party.
Edit: im not sure if the moveset is for HG/SS, it doesnt say on the page if it is or not.

Wouldn't the power of each punch be quite low considering Alakazam's base attack stat is rather low?

It depends what class type the move is, physical or element based?
Mr Pie
30-03-2010, 09:02 PM
Usually... a punch is physical... just saying
Nic Xtreme
30-03-2010, 09:15 PM
The punches are now physical, and thus useless on Alakazam. Focus Blast, a slightly inaccurate (70%) but rather powerful fighting special attack is a good choice, available for just P5500 at your local Goldenrod Department Store!
http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/file/960099/59299
^ This is a great guide for some fantastic (some would say...the best choice!) for movesets on your pokes for getting through the game! It features "before" Elite 4 sets, too, featuring the best possible moves your poke would have via Levelling/TMs/Heart Scale. It's great!
I just killed the shit out of the Elite Four, mostly thanks to my Lugia. As soon as I got to Kanto, though, Lt. Surge killed me easily. **** grinding >_>

Picked up the Heart Gold version on sunday because all my friends have soul silver. I'm only up to the third gym though as juggling 4 different games is getting a bit ridiculous.
Not sure if this has been mentioned but there's supposed to be a new pokewalker route available between 1 April to 3rd march for download over wi-fi where the only pokemon are pikachu's but you'll have the chance to catch one with either surf or fly.

Yeah, that Miltank fight was a bitch for me, too. I only had junk Pokemon left by the end of it so I was forced to use sand attack, potions and patience until it destroyed itself with struggle.
Considering I just Double-Kicked my way through all of the trainers in the gym losing no more than 20HP....
I wonder if Nintendo will ever make a Pokemon that goes through all regions. Kanto Johto and the other 2.

Is there any special combination of bait and mud that works best?
Spazzallo

Bait makes Pokemon more likely to stay but harder to catch.
Vice versa for throwing rocks.
Or you could go to Route 7 at night where they're fairly common :).
Just got up to the Elite 4 for the second time. Wiped out on the first trainer :(. Gotta train up my Houndoom some more so he can destroy her.
TimmyJ
01-04-2010, 08:41 AM
Yeah, I'm missing a good dark type...Murkrow's attack is awesome but defences are pretty terrible, and it's evolved form is a bit slow.
I already have a fire type in Typhlosion so i don't want a Houndoom, which is too low defensively IMO.
Umbreon is too defensive...Cacturne's pretty powerful, and I imported one with Pal Park, I might go with that and see how it works out. I have Espeon, Flygon, Ampharos, Gyarados and Typhlosion in my team so a Grass/Dark wouldn't fit too badly.

Well, clocked up 50 hours played so far (so that averages to 5 hours a day, holy crap =/) with 59 Pokemon caught. Tried the Elite 4 rematches again, got up to the 4th one and wiped out completely. I really need a fighting move to take down those Dark Pokemon :(. Got a long way to go before I'm ready to take on Red. Currently got at team of Feraligatr, Dragonite, Alakazam and Jolteon all between level 56-59 and a Houndoom on level 50.
I've noticed that eggs come so much faster this time around then in the original. I left my Flereon in the day care centre and I have yet another Eevee egg even though the last one I got hasn't even hatched yet!
Also if anyone is willing to trade, I have Flareon and Vaporeon if you'd like one to breed your own Eevees and I am hatching a Tododile egg. Once I beat Red I will have a few Charmander eggs and Trecko (I think thats his name, the Grass pokemon from Generation 3) to trade for other starters. It'll have to wait until next week though.

Pretty good team spazzallo, and you've managed to keep all their levels similar...
mine are now ranging mainly from 75-80 but my poor Ampharos is only 65 or something. Gotta train him up...he's really slow but his special attack stat is about 215.

I've been dragged back in after 10 whole years. Funny, a game I stopped playing because of peer pressure I started playing again because of peer pressure.
Trying to get my Smeargle back up to scratch. When I was catching it it used sketch on my Tentacruel which pissed it away on acid, so it's going to take 40 levels before it's even READY to go for the Hydro Pump, Thunder, Flamethrower and Hyper Beam powerhouse I had back in the day.
Coming as someone who hasn't played it in so long, I would have liked it if some of the "new" pokemon (ie anything since original gold/silver) had been added to old areas. I haven't seen any pokemon yet that I didn't back in the day.
Loving it though. Shall be up for some wifi battles once I have my 6 ready to go.

Why didn't I do what I did the first time and just use my cyndaquil to shit all over everyone else's pokemon and then use the elite 4 to level other pokemon up later with an exp. share?
I DO suppose it is more fun this way though. Managed to put in about an hour, I've got a cyndaquil sitting at level 13 while I'm levelling up a sentret (Because I'm pretty sure they learn rollout, I hope i'm not thinking of zigzagoon) and a Spearow+Pidgey. Because I like both of their evolved forms.

Gyarados will be comparatively weak possibly for two reasons! (1) because you've only just caught him his stat modifiers (EVs) gained from fighting Pokemon won't be as high as your other pokes, and (2) are you using him with special attacks? Swap him over to physical attacks nowwwww!

Changes to the EV system between 2 and 3 made this pretty much impossible unfortunately.
Also you can legally get a Mew if you have pokemon ranch.

Just caught Ho-Oh. Took me about eight Ultra Balls. Woo! This should certainly make the Elite 4 much easier.
Also, the Kimono girls showed that my team is ridiculously vulnerable to electric types. I beat the fourth girl's Jolteon by continually healing Ampharos until the thing had used all its offensive moves, then switched to Feraligatr to finish the job. Umbreon and Espeon gave me some trouble too - I beat Espeon by sending out Hypno and using Hyper Potions every second turn, in between headbutts.

seriously, headbutt ftw.
Grinding is slow, as it were.
I do like the idea of my geodude in there, it's nice because it can lay a beatdown on so many different types, particularly at this level.
in goldenrod, I'm going to evolve my pokemon and choose eventually which flyer to use (of fearow/pidgeotto)
Sentret is coming along but it's still quite weak. Headbutt has made him a lot better though.
My togepi is gonna be bitchin after it evolves.

well its final form, togekiss, apparently has some awesome stat modifiers or something like that. It can get good stats.
And it learns erm, that fighting ball move thing, erm, Aura Sphere.
I'm planning, late game, for it to be a big-hitter, Along with my Typhlosion.
But I'm only at the sudowoodo bit, speaking of which
Got a call from one of the randoms that adds you, this chick said that if you take a sudowoodo to route 36 or one of them that something weird will happen.
by my "Flyer" I mean my transport :)
Whitney went down quite easily, due to my female Geodude sporting an epic Rock Punch. FARKAYU Attract! and other related moves.
Daycare gave me a levelled up bellsprout and now I have something for that rival's croconaw.
Also, the bellsprout at lvl 20 was kinda awesome for the sudowoodo- considering it had stun spore, poison spore (move thingy), and sleep powder.
made it far easier to catch.

Those moves are Heart Scale moves - find some Heart Scales and Donphan will be able to learn them. I'm assuming they move remembering dude is the same as the deleting one? I think that's what the sign outside said...
When the Pokedex (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/232.shtml) entry for a Pokemon lists either (a) a lower level or (b) a dash (-) for a move, it means it needs a Heart Scale to learn it. The moves they learn "when they evolve" would be the ones not listed in Phanpy's entry, but listed in Donphan's entry on the level it evolves (in this case, it is Fury Attack).

Hmm, I'm contemplating getting rollout on one of my poke's now.
Currently my team is sporadically between the 30's and 40's.
I remembered that clair has a lvl 41 Kingdra, so I thought I'd level ampharos up massively to beat it.
Then i realised there is no type advantage due to the damned dragon.
I need an ice poke :)
Steel is also looking better and better for these reasons. In fact, I'd really love an Empoleon right about now.
but anyway, the ampharos is still a major kick-ass for me, as I think i've lucked out on the IV's for him- his special attack is through the roof, level 40 and it's already 124!
Typhlosion is now 38, he did some sidelining to let amphy level up, and a lot of the rest of my team probably feels a little left out too- Graveler and Furret are sitting at 32, whereas pidgeot is at 36. After I transfer togepi back in (and hopefully level her up after the crapload of steps I took) I should have a nice psychic to go with.

Yeah I find that the percentages in these games is vastly different from others.
Compare it with world of warcraft, if you've played.
approximately 30% of the time I would dodge, about my dodge %.
Pokemon, if i get hit with 1 sand attack, a move that should then theoretically go from 100% accuracy to, say, i'm going to say 80%, misses 3x in a row, and this happens often.

Flamethrower. Easily. Barely any double battles and as mentioned 90% accuracy aint really 90% accuracy ><.
Is there options for online battles to have levels scaled back to 50 like in the tournements in the game? I really hope so, it would definitely help setting up a hyper tournement.
My Houndoom learnt Nasty Plot, which raises his Special Attack by 2 stages. Pretty much unstoppable now, unless another Pokemon is faster then him and can finish him in 2 shots :).

What do people have against Gen.3? It had a large world that didn't need padding with older areas like G/S did; it introduced Natures, Abilities, Weather Effects and Doubles Battles, it overhauled the PC/Boxes system and made it useable, and added the largest number of Pokemon since Generation 1. It updated the Berries, added Pokeblocks and Pokemon contests, and had that secret hideout feature which was kinda useless but still entertaining.
Oh, and the Battle Tower was a new addition wasn't it?
Admittedly not all of the Pokemon were original or interesting but a large portion of them were, moreso than in other games. The starters were all considerably better than in Gen. IV in my opinion, though they've seemed to get worse with each generation.
Picking up Heart Gold next payday, I would've gone for Silver but my friend got in before me and she's the main person I'll be trading/battling :(

i freaking hate it when your friends expect you to get the version of pokemon you don't neccessarily want. it's like "whatever, i like silver as much as you why do i have to play gold?" hence i usually get both versions >.>
Why don't you just let them know that more than 2 people in the world play pokemon? GTS is there for a reason.

Those were all excellent additions, however it was ruined by the sheer number of boring and uninspired Pokemon.
Also, most of the good Pokemon weren't even in Ruby or Sapphire (I think there was only 200 Pokemon in the game, total) so I couldn't even ignore them.

I didn't like the addition of some of the things - the whole pokeblock thing was just a mind**** to me, I liked contests but you needed them to be successful. Berries were nice, natures and shit like that I found confusing. Secret hideout also bad. a million more legendary pokemon than were in the previous games was bad.
That said, I really, REALLY loved the idea of Dive and the storyline.
additionally, event shit.
If nintendo could make the next pokemon game only have ONE, ONE
ONE
event pokemon, I would be happy. It's more regionism from those bastards.

Just beat red. Didn't end up doing any more grinding, so I took a Feraligatr lv 72, Luxray, Espeon and Aggron lv 57, Camerupt lv 53 and Nidoking lv 40 (HM mule). So proud when my Camerupt OHK'd Red's 88 Pikachu with Earthquake. 35 level difference? Nothing!

I have a lvl 47 Growlithe and 47 Donphan, oh how I love them.

Anyone else think the Box system in this is a (somewhat large) step back from DPPt and even the Advance Generation? Not having the 'smart' cursor option for Move Pokemon is highly irritating, and the statistics UI is not very clear in my opinion.
Updated Johto region is a blast however.

Do the Pokethlon! 2500 points for fire stone and 3000 for dusk stone. Speed games are very easy to score 500+ points in each time.

The worst thing about these games is that you don't want to choose between two pokemon, not because they're equally good, but because they're both so COOL.

I transfered Suicine and Raikou over from my copy of Ruby (not to mention the Regi series and Latios). Still kicking myself over sending Rayquaza/Entei over to Colosseum on the Gamecube, but how was I to know that many years later the decision would come back to haunt me?
I have no idea where my copy of Diamond is. I never finished it anyway.

If you lose you go back to the pokecenter with all the exp you gained. Even if you aren't ready to beat the elite 4 it's still a great, albeit expensive, grind.

Can't you give your money to your mom to "save"? Therefore not loosing any money at the elite four when you loose?
If you defeat at least one of the Elite 4 you're pretty much guaranteed to make a profit, so you shouldn't really worry about losing.

The official website (via Joystiq) promises that in Pokemon Black and White "every aspect [of the IP] will be reborn innovatively". We'll know more on 15th April, apparently.
New area, new Pokemon, a couple of new features, otherwise it's the same game we've been playing since 1998.
I would love to be proven wrong.
hell yeah. Here's hoping for a reinvention of the battle mechanics to not be the rigid turn based combat and some kind of realtime action-game based system. That's been my dream for the franchise since the original red/blue.

Anybody ever wonder what they're gonna call the versions down the line? Like when they run out of normal colours and the Generation 11 games are called "Pokemon Pale Magenta and Kinda Sandy Yellow"?
Or they could keep continue in the Ruby, Diamond, Pearl vein and Gen 12 can be "Pokemon Talc and Shale Versions".

It's probably been mentioned before but just lose! You lose a tiny amount of money but you would have gained far more plus all those experience points! There's only a very small monetary penalty for whiting out!

PC Boxes were great in the GBA (and I think DPP) versions. Move Pokemon was all you needed, cause it covered Withdraw, Deposit and Moving Items in one simple option.
Nic Xtreme
10-04-2010, 07:56 PM
The PC boxes started out with the fantastically flexible move option, but DPP made it way easier with the touchscreen! HGSS's isn't as good, as you have to click "Party Pokemon", then "Switch", and it still doesn't swap them the way it should.

I was so lucky to beat that Houndoom. I was using my Feraligatr (the only one of my Pokemon still alive) to Water Gun it and it only needed 1 more hit when it used Crunch (or something) on me. I watched, and prayed, as my Feraligatr's health went down, down, down...and stopped...........at 1HP.
Needless to say, 1HP was all I needed so I finished the Houndoom off with one more Water Gun and the battle was over.

They've evolved in a similar manner. Aesthetically, not so much, but the fighting engine has evolved and changed significantly. Same as Pokemon. Thing is, because the metagame of Pokemon isn't the core experience for as many people as it is for fighting games, the evolution of the series in that respect isn't always obvious.
