So, the 24 hours of Nurburgring is this weekend which would make a pretty good time for a revival, but there's a lot of us (myself included) who still don't have live Gold. To give folks time to renew their subscriptions and get some practice in, we'll hold 2009's first official Sunday Forza next week.

Main race:
Hyperactive M3 Classic - stock BMW M3 E46, 5 laps of the Nurburgring. ABS only, all other assists off. The 2009 prize car will be unveiled shortly before the event.

Warmup races:
B-Class open - Maple Valley, 4 laps. Bring your best B-class tunes and show us what you've got! All assists off for this one.

More warmup races will be added as people suggest them. The main race will start at approximately 8pm AEST as usual :)

See you there!

I'll need to pick up a gold membership renewal, but yeah . . . I'm in.

Pretty sure we used the BMW M3 (E46) Coupe last time, and I think we only did 5 laps.

The tune is done, it's an A850 drift setup I got from the Forza community site. Handles beautifully at high speeds. The paintjob is a work in progress so it'll no doubt get a few tweaks before Sunday night.

Oh, and thanks for letting me think that next Monday is Queens Birthday weekend. I've been telling everyone that it's next Monday and only just noticed that it only applies in NZ. Australia is the following Monday.

Lousy Queen wanting multiple birthdays. :p

Wooop! Got my gold subscription today. That Major Nelson Mustang finally downloaded, and I've planned out the rest of the livery changes for the BMW. Also I've 100% finished arcade mode, so that's another 4 achievements worth 115 gamerpoints. I've put a car up for auction too, so we'll see how that pans out.

Roll on Sunday!

A random design I whipped up today. The different panels of the E46 are split into annoying sections and that stopped me from doing lasers over the whole thing, too difficult to line it all up.

I'm tossing up between my Audi Quattro and my Mugen Integra for the Maple Valley race. The Quattro is a generic grip tune and is super quick, but the Integra is tuned specifically for Maple Valley and held the top time for several weeks (not set by me). Unfortunately since it's a time attack car it can't really race properly until the tyres heat up.

Dunno why I couldn't initially connect. It was fine, and then the net dropped out altogether. So I just restarted everything (modem, xbox), and it connected fine.

By then the E46 race had started, but the bastard telemetry doesn't tell you what lap you're running.

Oh well, I suck at the Ring anyway.

Did better than I thought I would with the TK Subaru though in the B Class race. :D

Pretty awesome night of forza-ing.

Trin took the lead pretty early in the main event and apart from a couple lead changes, I basically spent 4 laps staring at Trins rear end. Even with the help of my super pit strategy which allowed me to enter in second and come out first, I came in second about 5 seconds behind Trin with Shorty bringing up the rear.

Maple valley race went better. My hax 'blue edition' pug 206 defeated Clockworks Quattro.

Laguna Seca also went well. Accoring to Clockwork, it's hard to drive when people walk in-front of your tv screen. :p Laz should have won purely on car choice. Go Silvia!

Road America . . . . us fools were destroyed by Clockwork, despite having people throwing random bottlecaps/pillows/junk at him.

I'll go through and capture some video footage tomorrow and hopefully have a compilation of all races up later in the week.

Lazlow

I picked it, forgetting it was setup for drifting

Thinking I might clean out my garage and start over though. Every time we do these things there's just more and more cars I don't use or were failed experiments.

One thing I hope they do with F3, is give you the ability to sort your cars by make/drivetrain/class. F***ing annoying having to scroll through a long line of cars.

Clockw0rk
31-05-2009, 11:03 PM
Yeah, I spun out early on the Nurburgring (as always) leaving Shorty, Trin and Surgeon to battle it out while I tried to act a bit less anti-social seeing as there was a loud party going on all around me.

I jumped back in for the Maple Valley race, thinking my super-fast Quattro (it runs 58s at Tsukuba) would destroy the competition. Sadly, Surgeon's insane Pug stuck right on my tail for the first two laps and passed me on the third, ending up 150 metres ahead by the end. That thing was insane.

After that, I got the chance to show off my Heaven/Hell Evo 10, which kept a tidy lead for most of the race until my flatmate stood in front of the goddamn television on the final corner of lap 3, sending me off the track and giving Surgeon a decent lead. My attempt to take an inside line on the first corner and out-brake him was foolish, and he stayed ahead for the rest of the lap.

As for Road America...
A bottle cap war had broken out between the drunkards in my living room, which escalated to the point where there were bottle caps, cushions and playing cards flying everywhere, making driving a nightmare. Thanks to my incredibly well-tuned AWE Audi S4, I managed a solid first place by over 1km. It would have been 2km if it weren't for those meddling kids!

Overall, it was a great night. The prize car has gone to Trin for the week, and I'm looking forward to next week's races.

Sunday Night Forza 2009 - Queen's Birthday Bash Footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWJJNtw0Rq0&fmt=18)

Finally got around to capturing some footage from the main race. Kept with the JK soundtrack, so too bad if you don't like him. My favorite bit is at about 3:16. I think Trin spins out infront of me, and misses Shorty and I by what looks like centimeters. :)

Not sure if I'll make a compilation from the other races. It's a bit of a pain to capture, and takes way too long to compile.

I got it with my Xbox about a year or so ago - I got that double pack with Viva Pinata.

I currently own Burnout Paradise and think it's very fun for an arcade racer but just lacks licensed cars.

I have Midnight Club: LA but that is still in the shrink wrapping. And it is on my to get back to games.

Looking at Forza 3 - I am very impressed with the supposed in-game (I still call antics on it) and might get it when it comes out.

With regards to the race, are we increasing the number of laps at all? 6 could be better than 4 if this is to be the main race.

A couple of other races I'd like to suggest are a D400 sprint round Road Atlanta short (maybe 10 laps?) and something fun on New York, since we haven't raced that track for a long time.

Gday lads.

Good to see some Hyper fans having some good fun laps. I've only recently started to get into Forza 2 for a bit of fun (i mainly run with the Gran Turismo series and Live For Speed on PC). Dont have a wheel set up for the 360, but Forza isnt too bad to play with the joypad and i'm slowly getting a bit quicker (but still pretty slow so you guys have no worries).

I might try and make some races if i can wrangle Sunday off work. But even if i cant race with you guys Sunday, i'll definately try again another time.

Anyone got a tune they could send my way for either the Subie or Evo as i dont have many tunes and just enjoy having a crack with arcade cars mostly.

btw- cool vid of the Nurburgring racing. Gotta luv the green hell ;)

Been good ;)

I've been busy playing Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, but i've shelved the PS3 until the full version of GT5 comes out. And looking at the E3 info and vids GT5 looks pretty darn impressive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2uQ2ayvvWY . I'm still heavily involved in the GT community but am just having a bit of a wee break to recharge the batteries.

Decided to have some fun with Forza 2 and have found it quite enjoyable. Painting up cars is good fun, and i've got a couple of mates who play a bit so we have been doing a few races in between Halo3 sessions.

I've got rfactor as well, but in all honesty i much prefer Live for Speed. Some of the mods for rFactor are amazing though. This is why i play LFS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAvj0iY1Zig

btw - looks like i cant make the Forza races this Sunday, but i'll follow the threads at this forum and see if i can hook up with you blokes sometime soon.

...Like your Mum :p

EDIT: I'm capped. Dialup speeds until next Sunday, so we'll see how the races go but don't be surprised if I can't race due to lag. Had a go with Trin today and it wasn't terrible, but with a grid of 4 or 5 that could change. Anyway, my cars are all sorted for tonight. Got a new STi that's bloody quick but I'll probably still drive the Evo to make it a proper rematch, and my A850 Buick has 736kw and 1,050nm of torque. FEAR IT. Will be taking a Renault 5 Turbo round Road America Short, it's not good on the straight but powers through everything else without needing brakes.

Good couple of races. First was a tad boring after it became apparent that no one was going to catch Clockwork. Loved the muscle car race (obviously)

Grats to Laz on the R1 race too. Nice victory.

As for the music for the LS race, I did say that I would let the winner choose which means that I'll probably be using 'Inital D:Back on the rocks', unless I can convince him that the 'Not Many Remix' suits the footage better.

Given that there's not a lot of action in the Laguna Seca replay, Scribe seems like a better choice. Back on the Rocks could work for the carnage that was the New York race though, if you're going to do a replay of that one :)

Surgeon sold me on the idea of an R1 Nurburgring race, so if a mod wants to re-title the thread, next week's race will be:

R1NG MADNESS!
5 Laps of the Nurburgring in R1 class cars, ABS on as usual (unless there are objections?) but all other assists off. Fuel and Tyre wear on, so there should be at least one pit stop along the way. Damage off, unless we all want to limp around after the first corner :p
Winner gets the prize car as usual, and maybe a special tune if I'm feeling generous :)

Warmup races will include an R2 showdown on Mugello, and a Rotary Only race on Tsukuba - anything A850, provided it's powered by a rotary engine. I think we should get some exotics in on the action so how about S998 hypercars - Zondas, Koenigseggs, Carrera GTs, Murcielagos and the like. Track suggestions welcome for this one :) For something with a bit more finesse, tune up a C550 (anything goes) and we'll take them round Maple Valley reverse.

We might not get through them all, but at least it gives us something to plan for :)

Tuning will be allowed for the R-class cars, so try your luck if you want to mess with your setups. See you there! 14/06/09, 8pm AEST.

Decided that Maple Valley is not the place for a muscle car, so I tuned a Mitsubishi GTO instead. Such a freakin' graceful drive for something of it's weight (1,700kg for those playing at home). It was a decent lap, 2nd one into the free run to get the tires warmed up, but it could go faster. Forgot to check what the actual time was. :P

Also Youtube was being a slut with the uploading and then viewing of this, so here's a direct link to the MP4 (http://members.iinet.net.au/~trinityjayone/550GTO.mp4) if it gives you troubles.

Seems you cross the line at 8secs to start, and 1:51 to finish. So a 1:42/1:43. If the playback speed is accurate. Looks fast either way.

I'm deliberating between more weight for extra power, or light car with less oomph. Either way, my times come out similar, however the lighter option is easier to corner.

TrinityJayOne
11-06-2009, 12:37 AM
C550 speeds are pretty tame so a heavy car isn't such a burden on handling as it is in higher classes. Obviously a heavy car can work (see vid :P), but I'd rule out the muscles. I tried a Shelby GT500 and it just couldn't keep the power down. Not enough tuning space to beef up the handling sufficiently, not enough straights to let the engine make up for the poor cornering. Regardless, the only other heavyweights below C550 I can think of are the 2 Mercs...the CLK-something sedan and an AMG coupe I think.

If you're going something lighter, I'd stick to a 4WD or FF as there's a lot of nasty elevation changes right before corners when you go backwards. That lap I did above was one of my less sideways ones, and it's 4WD! :D You'll be in Drift Country driving an FR.

Clockw0rk

My Renault 5 works on being light enough to not need brakes, which worked great on Road Atlanta Short so hopefully the same principle will carry over to C550/Maple Valley. It sucks on tracks like New York, but chews up corners without problems. I'll do some laps and post some times tonight.

If you want to go the low power/lightweight route, try putting full forza kit on and maxing the downforce too, then playing with the suspension from there. Higher spec tyres wouldn't hurt either.
You'd be surprised at how much power you can actually add afterwards, a full Forza kit (or at least front bumper and wing) lowers the PI very quickly but it's essential for a good grip tune.

Lazlow
11-06-2009, 09:38 AM
Yeah after the balls up that was my Evo 6, I wont be neglecting the Forza kits any more. Or race tyres.

Might try leaving the engine stock and see if I can't squeeze in the 3rd stage weight reduction.

TrinityJayOne
11-06-2009, 09:53 AM
I've only got sports tires on the GTO, and the aero parts are just ricer ones to drop the PI a few points so that I could put in a transmission (the stock ratios are far too long for the engine). Didn't feel that it needs the grip of the Forza parts, plus they tend to look like shite.

I think we should get some exotics in on the action so how about S998 hypercars - Zondas, Koenigseggs, Carrera GTs, Murcielagos and the like.

Sure hope the Nissan R390 counts (there were 2 road going versions made >_>) because I've got it set and I love it :D

Also have an R8 tuned up as well, and while its accelerates better and has a higher top speed, its braking distances are much longer and it doesn't turn as well.

Clockw0rk
14-06-2009, 07:22 AM
Hell yes the R390 counts. That's the sort of cars I was aiming for with the race, fewer supercars and more Hypercars - McLaren F1s, Ferrari F50s and such. They're expensive though, so any supercar will do :). The R8 is really hard to tune well - the Forza 3 version that they auctioned off during E3 is the first one I've driven that doesn't handle like a brick, I considered racing it but decided to go for something RWD and a bit more exotic.

I've been finalising my cars and getting my liveries together - my car lineup has changed slightly too, I'm running an R10 on the 'ring and a Porsche GT1 on Mugello. I'm deciding whether or not to change the R5 for something else, and I'm looking at a McLaren F1 for Road America. Mikewazowski should be in tonight too, if he gets Live Gold today.

Oh, and it'll be 5 laps for R1s, I reckon 5 laps for the rotaries is good too since Tsukuba is pretty short. How does 4 laps for R2s and C550s, and 3 laps for the exotics sound?

I'll probably do a rush job with my tunes for tonight so probably wont be very quick, but should be fun. For the hypercar race (seeing as it would probably be a bit inappropriate to use a GT2) I'm actually thinking of ditching the Porsches and using a Ferrari F50 but I'm worried about messing up the handling. The F50 handle's so well in stock tune that it can keep up with hypercars 10 years newer and with 100-150 more bhp than it......

I'll have a bit of a play, might end up using a GT1 or Carrera GT anyways, haha.

I did horribly throughout. :(

Using my LP640 over the F430 for Road America was a horrible choice, I greatly overestimated its ability to take a corner. Strange that it's a blast to drive on the Ring.

The only race where I had even a remote chance was the R1s, but the GRANDMAS in front of me kept getting scared and braking, then I would swerve to avoid them and run wide. Maybe the 962c is just superior. :D Seriously though, you just gotta put faith in the downforce and plough on through. :P

TrinityJayOne

The only difficult thing about driving the 962c is the bloody torque from the turbos. It's all beer & skittles up until about 5,000rpm, then all of a sudden you have 2.3PSI of boost. Gears 1 & 2 are worthless, 3rd isn't much better and even 4th isn't safe from wheelspin if you push hard enough around a turn or hit a bump.

'Cause that strategy worked so well on Road America. :p

I won the R2 race (goddamn that S7R is quick), the Hypercar race (FM3 R8 FTW) and the Rotary battle (using a literally last-minute Spirit R build) but lost the C550 race (I blame the car cannon that fired right at the start) and, if I'm not mistaken, netsplit out of the R1ng race. I'm just not used to R1s, I'd need a few more laps before I had the confidence to fang it round corners at ludicrous speeds.
My Audi handled amazingly well and didn't have Trin's boost problems despite running 3 bar thanks to the leaderboard tune (#4 overall I believe) which kept me comfortably ahead, but all 4 tyres were above 90% wear (the rears were at 100%) at the end of lap 3. A better pit strategy would have won it for me.

As for the other races, I managed some of the fastest laps of the night but couldn't keep it consistent. I need to work on my passing.

Looking forward to next week though. Team NZ represent! We should do an enduro on a shorter track, it'll keep the pack closer together which makes things interesting.

then all of a sudden you have 2.3PSI of boost
That's 2.3 Bar, or around 34psi. My Celica runs 12.5psi, so 2.3psi in a race car seems a bit weak :p

It must be a twin turbo thing because the Bentley Speed 8 has a similar power curve. If you keep the revs high enough you don't really notice it, though.

HiredMan
15-06-2009, 11:18 AM
It's also got to do with engine capacity. The 962 has by far the smallest capacity of any of the R1 class cars (2.6l from memory). The bigger engines produce more exhaust gasses and hence spin up the turbos quicker.

Clockw0rk
15-06-2009, 11:24 AM
Yeah, the turbo on the R10 spools up pretty fast thanks to the low redline (5500rpm :o).

HiredMan
15-06-2009, 12:09 PM
Yeah, the 5.0l+ diesels in the Audi's and Pug's should produce full boost before 2,000rpm.

Shorty
15-06-2009, 12:12 PM
Whoops, I deleted my post after you posted that one. Wasn't sure that the lower rev range of the power curve mattered when it came to turbo lag. Does it?

HiredMan
15-06-2009, 12:46 PM
Yes, it does. You'll actually find that high bhp diesels will suffer from quite noticeable lag below 1,800 odd rpm, which is also accentuated because they rev much more slowly than petrol engines..

The general rule with lag on petrol engines though is: the smaller the capacity and the bigger the turbo/boost, the more lag you'll get. There are many other factors though.

Porsche (and some other manufacturers, like Volvo) uses variable geometry turbochargers on the 997 Turbo and GT2. These tubochargers have turbine vanes that can change their angle at different engine speeds, effectively behaving like a small turbocharger (which spools quickly for less lag) at low engine speeds and a large turbocharger (which produces big boost/power) at high engine speeds.

The ultimate counter to turbolag though is an anti-lag system (like on Clocky's GT-Four), mainly used in rallying applications so the turbo can remain on full boost even at low rpm. These usually take the form of an extra injector and spark plug plumbed into the exhaust manifold creating combustion and exhaust to keep the tubine spinning, no matter how much exhaust the actual engine is producing. You pretty much only find them in rallying though, as turbocharged track cars dont really need them (a good driver will keep the engine spinning in the powerband anyway), although I've seen some road cars with antilag systems. They basically just sit there backfiring, even at idle :)

Clockw0rk
15-06-2009, 12:52 PM
Hiredman explained it a lot better than I was going to.
It's noticeable when you compare my 3S-GTE to the one in my flatmate's Altezza - his redline is 8000rpm instead of my 7000, as a result boost comes on later.

Couple ideas.

Heavyweight race? I know the F2 career mode race limits cars to 1746kg. Not sure how many cars fit into this category, and what level you'd want to tune to. A or B i'd guess. Did we ever do the mini race around King Cobra? I remember it was Turb06's idea, but cant' ever remember doing it. Not sure, my 360 might have been RRod at the time.

Also wouldn't mind doing Seabring/Silverstone/Suzuka. Basically tracks we haven't done in a while. We must be neglecting the letter 'S'. :p

I’ve been too busy for Forza this week, I still haven’t booted it up since Sunday. From memory, here are the heavyweights:

2005 Mustang
Cadillac SRT8
Audi S4
Audi S6
A couple of the big Mercedes saloons
Bentley Continental GT
Aston V12
Ferrari 599

There are probably a couple of others, but that gives a good starting list if we’re keen to race them. A850 lets the Ferrari compete and allows for a fair bit of speed. I might bust out the Cadillac for a bit of VIP style, or go for the S4 on mega-cambered rims again.

If people want to race minis around King Cobra, I’ll build up a series of A850 minis and gift them out to everybody as an incentive.

Everyone's late or not turning up, so we're postponing this week's series until next week.
Since Hiredman made up a story so he could play more Battlestations Pacific, he doesn't get a mini. I'll post the tune and he can build it himself :p

To recap - next week:
A850 heavyweights, 1746kg or over. Sebring full, 6 laps.
B700 open, Suzuka, 5 laps
A850 Race Minis, 3 laps of King Cobra. Feel free to mess with the tune but you really shouldn't have to.

Lazlow

Yeah, if you're on the accelerator too much when you turn then you'll just fly in a straight line. It's impossible to spin though, and corrects super easily. Can run a 1:30.5 on Maple Valley Reverse with that setup, though a bit less understeer is probably better for something like King Cobra.

Nah I was referring to cars from the actual DTM series. The Opel Astra is probably the only one.

(For what its worth DTM cars aren't based on production models, they're all essentially 4.0L V8s air restricted to 470bhp, with a shell resembling a production car placed over the top. Many drivers feel they handle more like a single seater than a tin top).

Any of you guys interested in swapping some ghost replays, or indeed racing against each others 'Time Trial' ghosts?

I know how much of a pain in the arse it can be to get a lag free game, heck, its even hard to match up in the same lobby sometimes.

I've not spent a great deal of time on any of the 'Time Trials', but i'd be up for a challenge if anyone else wants to nominate one for us all to shoot at. I know its only hotlapping, but it would take lag out of the picture and let everyone run laps in thier own time when it suits them.

I love Road Atlanta, and i think there is a good Time Trial there if i remember correctly. cant remember the car though .... mmmm .... a yellow Corvette or Mosler perhaps .....

I'll have a good look next time i'm online and see if i can nominate a Time Trial to have a crack at and we might be able to run against each others ghosts.

Anyone interested?

my XBox Live ID is -

Just sent a message your way mate.

The Time Trial i was thinking of was the yellow Saleen @ Road Atlanta. Awseome car and track. Although i'd still prefer my racing rig and wheel that i use for Gran Turismo and my PC sims, the joypad is still good fun with Forza 2. Had to revert back to my old Dual Shock ways and have the pad set up for left stick (steering) and right stick (forward/brake) since i cant come to grips with the triggers.

Anyways, hope to get some more track time soon.

Any particular Time Trial you want to have a crack at?

Know of anyone else keen to have some hotlaps and do some ghost chasing?

I was looking through my Time Trials and i've still got a few to go. Some of my times are OK, but most are slugg'ish as i'm still comming to grips with the 360 controller for racing games.

Will have to give those settings a whirl.

But with soo many games on the trot, i'm finding it more fun to simply jump into arcade non tuned cars for some simple Forza fun. The 'Time Trials' let you see everyones records, lets you download thier ghost replay, and even download settings so you dont have to spend the time fiddling yourself (dont get me wrong, i love setting up cars but dont have the time with Forza atm).

The very last 'Time Trial' is @ the Nurburgring in the great ole Porsche 962c. I've had a few cracks, and even though i'm used to Gran Turismo 4's version of the Green Hell, i've managed to get in a reasonable time of 6'33.091. Anyone fancy downloading my ghost and having a crack?

Cheers to the guys that i've added to my 360 Friends list over the past week. I've been able to see the times you guys have been running in the Time Trials, download replays, and even have the odd run against your ghost replays (always enjoyed this feature in the Gran Turismo series, and i gotta say Forza do it very well indeed).

Gotta give a special mention to 'TrinityJayOne' who has a pretty handy Nurburgring Time. Good stuff mate ;) I did a good 6 lap session the other night and had your ghost replay loaded, and my PB ghost also in the mix as i struggled to match either of them. Hope to get a bit closer next time out on track. Your opening first few sectors really set up a fast lap.

Spent a bit of time at a couple of the other Time Trials, but couldn't get my Saleen around Road Atlanta any faster, or even improve my Evo around Tsubuka time.

HiredMan
02-09-2009, 03:26 PM
I've only run the TT's once each I think..... might have to give some more of them a go.

TrinityJayOne
02-09-2009, 07:08 PM
To get the Nurb time any faster you really need a wheel. Download the number 3 replay by Daveyskills (utmost respect for this guy, only top 5'er (on any track) that seems to do it without assists) and you can see how smooth his actions are. You just can't achieve that with a pad at those speeds.

Also FYI, you can setup your own races vs AI (better than the arcade mode ones) by starting an Exhibition room, setting the number of AI to 7 and the same for friend spots. That way you don't get noobs joining the race and kicking one of the AI out of the lobby, and you can hand pick their cars by selecting a driver and hitting the blue button. Happy snap from an all A-class Porsche race I did the other night. That's me in the 997T. :D
