View Full Version : OMG!!! 2010 sees Golden Sun DS

Myself and many others thought that it would never see the light of day... Then two years ago we thought we saw it slowly come into being. It was a hoax.
But now at E3 we finally get confirmation of a new Golden Sun title. Golden Sun DS, with an awesome looking trailer to boot! Albeit a ten second one.
No details have been announced yet (unless you count the fact that walking is controlled by the D-pad). But I am so excited! More excited than I've been about a game in ages. This is the most fantastic game announcement since Super Mario Galaxy. C'mon 2010!
Not confirmed: By looking at the trailer it looks like most of the original cast of characters are playable, including Isaac. I don't see why they'd change the characters in the future, but who really knows?!

Can't wait. For me, this sits as one of the best announcements from E3 for... well quite a long time really. Having missed out on the hoax I had many a year of desire built up, which caused an... unexpected reaction when I found the announcement slipped coyly into ign's liveblog.
The game seems to have made a good transition art style wise, though there's obviously way too little available to make a full judgement, but still. DAMN! EXCITEMENT!
*yawn* I was getting excited for "a new chapter in a much-loved franchise" then bam, golden sun :(

Here's some anime DVDs. Piss about in the menu trees for half an hour before selecting a single scene to watch. Repeat ad nauseum, sometimes ejecting the disc and resetting the 30 minute countdown.
but golden sun doesn't have cutscenes...
Vindik8or
03-06-2009, 03:45 PM
Okay, instead of watching the scene, you pick up the fansub script and read that. Then go back to the menus.
but I can't battle monsters, or explore a world, or level up a character, or buy items in an anime....

From the Nintendo US E3 site:
Golden Sun™ DS: After going dark six years ago, 2010 will see a new dawn. Golden Sun DS updates the popular portable Golden Sun role-playing series with an impressive graphical style. This installment follows the story of the previous heroes’ descendants and immerses players into the magic of its adventure by pushing the boundaries of intuitive touch-screen controls. Golden Sun DS is playable on the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems.Link (http://e3.nintendo.com/pressrelease/)

So hang on Hellion 7. Descendants? Why? So we're supposed to believe that someone as impulsive as Alex doesn't attempt to take the battle to Isaac and company? Also does this mean that some of the story lines won't be fulfilled?
Will there be any use to our level 90+ all djinii save files from Golden Sun 2?
I'm sure they've got some ideas to make it work, but this announcement really throws me.
Honestly, Isaac is in his 30s and past it so a new bunch of 17 year olds must save the day. It does not make sense! If Robert Harvey and Michael Tuck could play AFL in their late 30s then surely these guys and gals could fight some monsters!
Spazzallo
05-06-2009, 03:42 PM
Descendants could mean hundreds of years later. My guess is that the plot has something to do with Alex still being alive after all these years, either escaping from his tomb or someone else trying to bring him back. He did have the power of the 4 elements before the wise one shut him off.

The info I quoted is from the US Nintendo site, so maybe they have it wrong. The Takahashi brothers (bigwigs at Camelot) did previously say this:
And for us, as far as the whole Golden Sun setting, the world, the storyline for us, in our minds, Golden Sun 1 and 2 are prologues to the real event yet to come… So those games are created—again, from our viewpoint—as a way of introducing this world to the game players.Link (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumorsArt.cfm?artid=4522)
I'd imagine it could take Alex quite a while to reappear...
what with being buried along with a mountain and all.
Queenie

he absorbed some of the golden sun. So, being a JRPG, there's obviously some plothole in there that we don't know about that enables him to plot-twist the new game 3/4ths of the way through.

about 10-20 hours.
In the cave that leads to sentinel, I just waited until two firebirds appeared and chained them so at the end of one battle I got something like 2million xp.
the particular phoenix (I can't remember real name) gave the most experience in the game.

ireadtabloids
10-06-2009, 04:25 PM
I didn't realise the engine was in 3D until after I'd already seen it and somebody pointed it out. It looks like exactly the same level design as the other titles!
I've been thinking about the final scenes of Golden Sun: The Lost Age.
There's a distinct possiblity that Alex has been temporarily sealed in exactly the same location as the elemental stars were hidden. The secret cavern under the mountain. It's the only possible way that the next installment can make sense, I'm sure.
I know it's cliched and it makes me think of Ganondorf too, but it does seem to fit in with the idea that the new characters are actually Isaac's descendants.
What are your theories?
Queenie
10-06-2009, 11:12 PM
that the similarities it shares with ocarina of time and wind waker will in fact make it even more win, beyond belief amount of win in fact, when it is released.
Probably a little more delving into the history of the world, and seeing contigo, understanding why the world collapsed, and perhaps going beyond gaia falls... off the edge.
alex sets the cultures of the world against each other to create chaos and forces the descendants to attempt to seal the power of psynergy inside the lighthouses again which will somehow fulfil his wishes?

I disagree, the second added far more interesting puzzles and increased depth in combat due to the sheer amount of djinni and different classes. So many options!

Thus far I've kept my frustration in check. However, I fear that if this lack of information continues I will rage. Even quite unfairly against my beloved Hyper. Whose writers anticipation of the title is quite probably far more passionate than my own, and whose Japanese literate contributers have probably been trawling for info.

That's too bad with regards to the first games. You got weird combinations when you'd mix up the Djinn. I remember getting a ninja class when mixing earth wind and fire Djinn, complete with invisibility field powers stopping all random encounters as well as shuriken and bamboo themed battle psi powers.
I even once found a combination for turning a character into some kind of circus juggler class like in FF Tactics.
Incidentally, this game is really hard to find now in Melbourne. I went to three JBs before I found a copy. Anyone know what the production amount was for this title?

I had the same problem, my local JB had one left and that was because it was hidden behind something else. Goodluck finding a copy.
Really enjoying it so far but I have no idea how anybody would understand what's going on if they hadn't played the first 2 games.

For those fretting they won't get a copy of this game, don't panic. I heard that it's been done on a supply and demand ratio, and a second wave of copies will go on sale this week. If they sell over 75% nation wide another smaller wave will be shipped and so on. It's not going to be as hard to come by as some of us thought.
My source? Mate who works at JB.
How strong is the story in this game? I remember coming fairly bored towards the end of the original Golden Sun as it seemed to become a case of just being told "go there. Go there next. Now go there. And now....you go to some tower".
Is this new one like that, or does it seem to maintain a narrative?

I've finally started playing and am happy but also bitterly disappointed at the same time for a number of things:
new music is very kiddy. I feel at times like i'm playing a little kids game, which it probably is.
Items and status-etc is completely retarded compared to the old drop-down lists thing. Whyyyy.
Start != save. Took me ages to learn how to save (i don't have the manual on me).
World map looks gay compared to world map in originals. I mean the art style, not a fan. i'm talking about the atlas though, the actual thing you run on is pretty cool. Confused at the lack of rivers near erm, i'm around the Passaj entrance and all that stuff.
Why am I not going to bilibin! Why?
in 30 years, ok, upheaval and all that, but it feels like more than that amount of time has passed, as there are countries and all this shit, and one's already split up! I'd imagine it'd take a bit more than 30 years to build an empire, then die and have your sons war over it.
Why is crossbone isle not where it is in the original game?
Things I am loving.
Updated characters. Also, karis.
the way they came up with a way for them to all be young even though isaac n' co are like 47 now.
Tyrell. yes, use the psynergy on the kid who calls you stupid! yes! **** rief! (i have a feeling it was meant to be lief though)
new interactive psynergy and "zone of shit you can do in" as opposed to having to be in perfect position before.
easy
bitch
bitch
bitch
Story doesn't seem too bad so far, I just wanna go see people and see what happened, but it feels like it won't let me.
I hope i meet feizhi or something though :(

Finished Dark Dawn yesterday
and now we wait for Golden Sun 4. Did anyone else pick up the fact that Amiti is most likely Alex's son?
Enjoyed it though the character design outside of battles (i.e world control) still irritates me to no end because it doesn't feel as polished as the original games.
At the same time why do Isaac and Garett look like they've aged the 30 years even though they keep saying they don't look like they've aged a day? Also a little disappointed we didn't get to see many of the other original characters.

Started playing recently, just starting to get into it now. Found this useful thread on Gamefaqs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/960545-golden-sun-dark-dawn/57346255)for those who want to collect every djinn/summon before each 'point of no return', but don't want any real spoilers.
Since some are still just randomly scattered about the world map and can only be found through random encounters, I find this pretty useful.

I played it, I liked it.
reveal's dumb cousin is kinda shit thou, i want reveal so i can not bother looking through crates.
XP increases were awesome, less grinding. Still grinding if you wanna, but it feels like you're getting somewhere.
Sound effects need to be less disney though- mr. Hamata, but i saw satoru iwata in the credits so i was all Hrmmmmm
it good, now I want news on the next one. and I hope it sells well so we don't get a sequel 15 years from now.

Lol, I should probably get around to buying this game.
It occurs to me that I pretty much payed nothing for all the joy the previous games brought me. Yay borrowed copies! If it's as good as the old games I should have a fair bit of fun ahead of me. Not to mention bang for buck!

my first time round was about 35 hours, and that's without grinding to 99 (which is possible with the enemies before the final boss which give out RIDICULOUS xp (about 14-15k per enemy), or doing the final dungeons, or searching every barrel.
Unfortunately, the "reveal" that you get is late game and only does plot-based reveal. You must search every barrel and box, manually.

Yeah, that'd suck!
Why'd they change it?

Finished it just now (well, I mean I just cleared the optional dungeon and final secret boss). Around Level 50 at the end. It was fun enough, but I mainly like the little puzzles and such. The random battles were ****ing horrible, with there being only a few boss battles requiring any strategy. And most of those could be beaten by setting all your djinn off before the fight and spamming your most powerful summons straight away.
They need to get rid of the archaic random battles and replace it with something else. I like the Tales system, but thinking outside the box would be good too. As is stands at the moment, I just ran from A to B mashing the A button anytime a battle occurred to spam autoattacks, then heal afterwards as necessary. Not really fun.
