There's no thread for this, weird.
Anyway I bought my standard edition today and got the free town download + $17 worth of Simpoints so if you were going to buy the collector's edition for that - don't.
I've created 2 characters thus far, one was meant to be a sim that at least resembled me but that didn't work out too well due to the very limited amount of hairstyles and less than half seemed practical. There was no real short hair option, hopefully they'll patch it up maybe otherwise I might have to buy some using my simpoints which seems kinda stupid.
After buying a house for $16,000 I spent $1,200 on a neat entertainment system which is so like me in real life :D Barely had enough money to cover the basics with some crappy looking furniture and having $100 leftover. I bought a bike+bike rack which seems awesome but I can't use it? It is an adult size bike too, maybe you only use it when you're going around town/exercising but to get from point A to point B my guy just takes a taxi (which is free). I should've followed the tutorial all the way through
The game doesn't seem too different from the previous but there's much more to their personality where you give them traits like workaholic, computer whiz, handyman, loser, heavy sleeper, loner, insane, etc. There's quite a long list and its got one for just about anything you can think of including 'never nude' (always has some part of clothing on). Also the job selection involves either reading the paper or going around the city to signup for a specific career
I've barely done much, just sort of settled in with the house + get a job but I'm liking it :)

Might pick it up tomorrow. See if it works on my computer...
So can you not just walk straight into town? And is it possible to walk to other Sims houses?

You can walk anywhere but I click on the town map for easier access to buildings (and to see where I have to go). Its pretty much a freeroam :) The house across the street as well as nextdoor are visible from my house
I still haven't played much so I've yet to do any proper exploring. I should also mention that the clothing range is very vast, after you choose an outfit you can select each different piece of colour and replace it with patterns, certain fabrics or just any plain colours you want so its only the style of clothes that seems limited. I spent ages customising my characters!

Sweet I'll defintley be picking it up after school tomorrow. Can you buy cars?
/backslash
04-06-2009, 06:17 PM
Yes you can :) Straight away too, but I couldn't afford any after buying my $1200 entertainment system (cost more than one of the cars itself), hence why I got the bike instead but I think that's cooler :D The buying navigation system is so much easier to use as well
Oh and an addtional note you can finally place furniture on 45 degree angles!

I've had a bit more of a play now, and I'm definitely liking this much more than number 2. I too bought a bike and have yet to see my guy use it.
I am astounded as how smoothly this game runs, particularly when at times the Sims 2 would chug along for no reason. The quick load time is also amazing considering you can free roam around the neighbourhood (plus just having the one load per game is a big plus).
Being able to choose how I want my sim to act at work is a neat little feature too. My first day (as a music fan) I picked work hard and then finished work stressed, and had to spend the rest of the night de-stressing ;)
The moodlets are cool. I had a shower and then had a moodlet complaining it was too cold as I had bought a cheap shower. My cheap toilet won't flush 'til the third press and my first time cooking I set the house on fire :) I almost picked the trait where you can never set your house on fire cooking too. Luckily my insurance covered most of the damage.
I turned off the story progression and the aging in the options as I like to flog a particular sim and don't want them to grow old when there are still things I would like to do with them.
I like how it tells you what other sims are thinking while they're talking to you. I'm sure they'll be more things I like about the game but I haven't played enough to really get in depth yet.

Sounds interesting, I've been looking for something new to play from the usual FPSs, I have a chunk of money left of a gift card so I might grab this on the weekend if my work or big w has it in stock.

I like how it tells you what other sims are thinking while they're talking to you. I'm sure they'll be more things I like about the game but I haven't played enough to really get in depth yet.
I also like how when you create a character there's 3 different voices for each sim with a pitch bar level so you can have them with a really low voice or really high. This means there's probably 100 or so different sim voices
The only thing I hate is how you're meant to rotate the camera using the middle mouse button, I have the Logitech G5 so you can imagine how hard for me it is to hold it down and move around at the same time. I swear the right click used to do it in The Sims 2 rather than a strafing button. Actually I probably just used the control dashboard itself, can't remember
The game does feel a tad slow at some points despite exceeding the requirements but I do have it at 1680x1050 with almost high detail on everything. Apparently some users (in the US) are experiencing game crashes although I haven't had any but I'm welcome to patches to smooth things up
Had a browse through The Sims store and its heavily overpriced. If AU$17 = 1000 points that's almost $1 for every 50 points. Haircuts vary between 50-75 points. Its like browsing through the PSN's Home, I'm going to hold out until I can see a haircut that at least sorta looks like me. Atm my virtual real gf looks more like herself whereas I look like someone completely different
I might grab this on the weekend if my work or big w has it in stock.
If it isn't instock at Big W use their catalogue to pricematch at EB/JB ($68.84)

Thraxas does, I think he'd like it if you bought it off him :)
I played about 2 hours worth just now and really getting into it. Being a tinker (one of the traits) is great since you get to upgrade all your stuff, making things like showers and ovens self cleaning/fireproof as well as tinkering it to make it unbreakable or perhaps even better (I'm at skill level 6). The reward points for stuff like "make a particular meal = +500 happiness" requires a lot more chores before you can do anything but usually its quite simple, except for job promotions.
My house got burgled and after the police arrest the burglar you have an option to set him free (I didn't but maybe he'll give you money or something?) after he gets handcuffed whilst the police are surveying the house for more burglars/stolen items. I didn't get anything stollen and no reward money like the first sims game :(
My sim finally used his bike, whenever you go shopping he'll hop on it although strangely he comes home empty handed yet the fridge has been stocked. I had an opportunity to enter one of my meals for a restuarant competition but I couldn't figure out how to put something in my inventory until after the comp expired. If there's a hand icon you can simply click and drag it to your inventory, then select town map>restuarant>enter meal
I've still yet to interact with a sim but I'm pacing myself, taking it nice and easy. The open world is so vast, from my house I noticed I can see all the way down the street with cars/people passing. If I wanted to I could go nextdoor and ring their bell, surprisingly all of this doesn't slow down my comp, its pretty smooth sailing

Saw this over at gamefaqs and it made me laugh:
http://ui29.gamefaqs.com/2140/gfs_81672_2_3_mid.jpg
When I went shopping everything I bought was in my inventory and I had to manually put it in the fridge.
I hired a maid and there seem to be three different maids who come in a three day rotation, which I thought was a nice touch. I chatted one up, invited her to hang out. Spent all night romancing her, woo hoo'd her twice and then in morning she thought I was being awkward for flirting
I bought one of the lifetime achievement awards for my sim, which makes him popular with work mates. It seems to work, there are a couple of others I would like to try out too.

05-06-2009, 01:06 PM
I bought one of the lifetime achievements 'Professional slacker' so I can watch tv/relax at work without the boss minding. He's been angry lately though so I had to 'Power work' and 'Suck up to the boss' on a couple of days. I did the boss a favour on occasions delivering/reading stuff after work and he gives me a payrise of $1 per hour :( But I'm making about $340 a day now and doing some hacking/writing novels in my spare time for more money which I desperately needed after my oven caught on fire. That was good though since it meant I could replace it with one that improved my cooking skills and was self cleaning - expensive at $1400 but worth it for the added hunger value
Still haven't got a car yet, lol. My guy's still cycling everywhere to visit friends and sometimes I accidently send him home from work before his carpool arrived so he just ran all the way home :D Poor guy. I should've made my guy a workaholic, he's been getting really stressed if I powerwork so I have to make sure he's in a super good mood before he leaves the house

Man I've got a major bug in my inventory, I get an offer via mobile to upgrade someone's shower/fix their radio and accept the offer but nothing goes into my inventory yet the task is still listed! So instead of making money I have to cancel everything. Stuff like shopping/books work fine though
I'm hoping EA will release a patch as its really annoying :(
Going to upgrade my car soon, I noticed that there's a list of different speeds between each car, the bike is Speed 2, a lemon car is Speed 3 and it goes all the way up to 10 for a really fancy car. I'm saving up for a Speed 4 ($4500) so I can at least buy other stuff in the meantime
Job-wise I'm getting pretty good, making about 900 a day and was recently promoted, holding meetings, organising parties to get to know my co-workers better and improving my charisma at the same time so I can go down to City Hall to get a payrise every now and then.
With my furniture I'm gradually replacing everything, new dishwasher, microwave, computer desk (still got CRT), bookshelf, oven, bought a bath/shower combo since my Sim is always requesting a bath for reward points. With the reward points I made him a Party Host so everybody I've invited actually comes and I'm now a multi-tasker so I can do 2 things at once whilst working and improve job performance without having to power work. Also learned how to fish (skill level 3) so I rarely have to go to the supermarket, might have to do some gardening for veggies.
This game is seriously addictive :D Still haven't had lunch yet

Tell me about it.
I also have an inventory bug. My guitar which I carry around with me can no longer be used. It's in there but if I click on it it says there are no interactions available. I can't even drag it to the sell icon. So I had to buy another. I've seen that some other people have experienced similar problems but with different items. One guy has mouldy pizza stuck in there so he constantly has a negative moodlet.
I'm well on my way to being a rock star in the music career. Now sometimes if I don't choose to take my car or my bike to go out I get picked up and driven around town in my rock star bus :)
I slept with the boss and later asked for a promotion. It worked ;)
I also asked someone I work with to split up with their partner. She agreed saying her relationship with him was going nowhere, but now he would be mad at me. Unfortunately he is also a co-worker and it's not helping me get promoted because now that worker relationship section is always low.
Man I've got a major bug in my inventory, I get an offer via mobile to upgrade someone's shower/fix their radio and accept the offer but nothing goes into my inventory yet the task is still listed!
The items are put into the 'Family Inventory'
It's under Build Mode, it's the image of an open cardboard box under "Sort Item by Function"

Up to job level 10 now, making nearly $400 an hour :D Been getting some large pay rises which helps things out. The only problem is I now work just 3 hours a day for 3 days a week so I'm not producing much income, to solve it I have to go around town (in my limousine) and hold meetings everywhere and get paid $750 each time for about an hour's work. I did 2 meetings in 1 day and my career still said Meetings relationship: normal, they're really hard to please even when I hold meetings everyday at work. Gradually aiming for another promotion or perhaps it'll max out and then I'll be forced to quit my job.
Tbh its been pretty easy since I have the luck trait which means I get promotions/rewards much easier. I may have to eventually start over again with a new character to make a more unique list of traits rather than an easy lifestyle.
After buying a new car for my sim I haven't seen him use it once yet since he's got his limousine, annoying. Also after I amped up the graphics for more detail + smoother lines I noticed some fancy rocks in the distance and went over to collect them for money, you can also collect bugs and butterflies and sell/donate them for scientific research. For 30,000 (or was it 40,000) reward points you can become a Collector finder and be able to go around town making easy money
Oh yeah and I entered a food contest and won first prize, $2000 :)
/backslash
06-06-2009, 06:21 PM
Noticed that the reason I could hold meetings in other places besides work was to have the option to partner with their business to make some easy profit. Thing is, it takes so much money to get any profit. I spend $7000 for one business and get $1000pw from them so I thought maybe I should buy more, I'm now partnered up with 4 places - supermarket, bookshop, diner and restuarant costing me $32,500 all up
Still got the same house I started with, went to the gym to do my first ever workout, took a guitar lesson and a painting course to get started in whatever I intend to do next. Its a shame EA didn't include pets like one of the previous expansions since it really is an everyday thing, feeding the fish sucks. I should probably start a family but if you've already got one guy in the game you can't make another character and put that person nextdoor can you? Or would you have to start a new game? I'm thinking the latter
Everytime I quit The Sims 3 I feel like its going to crash my computer, when it quits there's a very long wait between the time it closes and the time I can actually click on anything which will then be slow for the first couple of clicks. Also when playing the game the texture loading is often very poor if everything is on high, not poor as in loading speeds but sometimes textures don't appear at all and you see it in its basic form (like my guy floating in the air driving his invisible car). There must be at least 100 bugs that need to be addressed very soon

Found out how to add another sim into the same game. In a rather stupid decision you have to go into the game you're currently in and bring up the town map>edit town *sighs* thankyou EA for making simple things complex
Gamewise I finally saved up 40,000 reward points to be a collector. Things like rocks, bugs, fish & seeds are now displayed all over the town map. If you're at the park and there's something nearby there'll be a huge beam of light to let you know. Now that I can move sims in I'm trying to marry the current person I'm with, apparently woohooing them twice and trying for a baby for the second time doesn't count to bring up the option :p Think I have to make them move in first and organise something
Oh and I got a patch for no intros from ModtheSims (http://www.modthesims.info/sitemap.php?view=ts3) so now when I click on the launcher's play icon it just loads it up straight away :D Much faster since the first 2 logos can't be skipped and then there's the intro

Sweet! This will definitely help with my laptop (so I can play Sims 3 at school, of course :P). Hopefully they do some modding of hair and such, I don't really want to pay for something like that outside of expansions...
Edit - I'll just add how I love the extra interactions you get with work, other than just putting up your stats. My main sim is doing a police job and needs to question random people and do reports on them to move up in ranks. And it's good to see you don't need friends to get a promotion this time, that was annoying...
Edit 2- Finally got married and love how I could move out of my crummy little house into my wife's giant house. Excellent.

How do I get my Sims to marry? I've tried excessive flirting and we've already got a kid to feed but there's still no option to even move into my house so she and the baby stay at her place. I'm guessing its because we're young adults and you need to be a proper adult (its the EA's way of saying "you have to be 40 before you have kids"). Also there's a lot of unrealistic events, new babies appear magically on doorsteps delivered by birds and changing diapers now involves spinning them around, this game wasn't made for 5 year olds!
The lack of relationship options is hideous (having to wait for suggestions to pop up, including makeout), and as I was saving & quitting my game, the game froze up on a continuous music loop and saving screen. I lost about an hour's worth of work, luckily I saved not too long before that. Where the f*** are the patches?! :(

Got my sims to become proper adults using birthday cakes so I could ask the sim to move in with me. I was going to get rid of the kid by selecting what I thought said 'Abort' but it actually said 'Adopt', got another child to feed but at least I could select the gender and age (baby, toddler or child). I chose baby since I missed out on the interactions when I got my woman pregnant but didn't see the kid until he was a toddler.
Shortly afterwards I moved out of my crummy 1st home and bought something a little bigger for $24,000. The layout design is pretty crappy though as I still don't have a proper dining room except for 3 chairs against the counter and I had to modify the bathroom. There's some other stuff that would have to involve rebuilding which is a pain so I browsed ModTheSims.com's website and found this house:

Looks just like a real house (and seems friggin awesome), its expensive though @ $123,000 but I'm nearly halfway there thanks to my weekly collecting money from businesses I partnered with. I'm much better off using my collector reward to find rare rocks & bugs :p At least I can just go to work and make an easy $750 from holding meetings, my hourly pay is now $763 per hour but its still only for 9 hours a week. I've maximised my job so now the best I can do is either random work opportunities or more payrises.
Be warned for anyone else who decides to partner businesses, if you miss 1 week of collecting it doesn't add onto the next week. Bit annoyed I lost $8000 just because I didn't bother collecting within the 1 week timeframe. Dunno if its a bug or not

Very time consuming :p Doesn't help much by EA purposely slowing down the game even when fastforwarding. Sleeping for example no longer takes 3 seconds on fullspeed, more like 20 seconds of tedious unwanted waiting. Sometimes to pass a day takes ages which gets annoying when waiting for your sims to go to work, hold meetings or sleep
Hopefully a patch will fix this or the modthesims website will come up with a solution
/backslash: How does the become a partner option work.. I've seen it but never bothered with it.
When you have enough money to become partners (after holding a meeting there) you basically get a percentage of their profits which you'll have to collect from them weekly + you get a contract in your inventory to remind you. I think a partnership $8000 gets me $1000pw whereas partnering with the fancy restuarant ($14,000 or so) gives you $2100pw. You might be able to sell your contracts, haven't tried but basically when you're a partner you'll have the option to buy their business and gradually take control of the whole town

What I usually do is have quick meals if the sim has to work rather than cooking a fully fledged breakfast which takes ages. Either that or on the previous night serve a meal for multiple people and then put it away in the fridge for leftovers so its an instant meal. My sim only needs about an hour to have brekky and a shower + maybe a trip to the toilet
this is my first ever Sims game :P
Woah, lucky you :) Sometimes I wish I went from the original game to Sims 3 so it doesn't feel familiar. As a toddler they can no longer play with the toilet water :( And I'm pretty sure there's commands missing like being able to talk to the parents to get fed or let out of the crib. I had a party recently and had 2 birthdays at the same time so my son & daughter could get out of their toddler state - the excessive amount of time required to look after them was disastrous. My adult sims would be running around the clock, one sleeps while the other one works either at their job or looking after the kids teaching them how to use the potty so I don't have to attend.
Over a period of 2 weeks I only had just enough time to go down to the shops to collect my money, come back home and do chores until my sims could barely stay awake even with the babysitter around. So much easier now that the kids can look after themselves (nearly). 2/3 traits were already made in their transition from toddler to child, one was grumpy & clumsy, the other was couch potato & heavy sleeper. Since I looked after them the best I could I was able to add 1 trait each, Ambitious & Genius, hopefully I can get rid of the first 2 traits at some stage as they're possibly the worst ones you can have (clumsy isn't too bad tho)

Are there any new hairstyles? I'm sick of only having ugly hair for kids, and only long for adults.

Yup, you can check them out here (http://store.thesims3.com/), they're mostly shorter hairstyles for adults but they don't look as crap as the ones we already have. They still don't have my hairstyle though :( They had it in The Sims 2 but now its gone, also there should be a tool to adjust the length of hair
edit: For the hair there's 12 females, 7 males, 1 girl and 8 boys

F*** I just lost 2 hours of work, the game froze up on me just as I thought to myself "I should save in case it crashes". C'mon EA, fix it!

*chants* "Join us..."
After my game froze up I noticed I'd only lost an hour's work (still crap though) and got up to where I was before with the income at $55,000 now. Just need about $40,000 before I can move into that other house, I'm holding 2 meetings a day as soon as my sim finishes work and I'm relying on my partner's promotions to get quick money. Think I'm gonna have to go around collecting rocks again
For a reward I'm meant to grow some onions for someone but I can't find the seeds for them, a lot are uncommon or rare so my skilled gardener doesn't even know what it is until halfway through growth. Out of 20 plants I still don't have any onions :(
Really hard to keep my son in check with his schoolwork, because he's grumpy full stats on everything mean bugger all to him so I have to follow his very specific requests. Argh! Hope I can get rid of it, funny watching him sometimes since he's clumsy, he opened a drawer and hit himself in the head and fell down. My daughter on the other hand played catch with my sim and since he's a full on athlete he keeps on throwing the ball too hard :D

Well after taking up nearly the whole day today I managed to buy the house I was saving up for, thanks to the land location it cost me $189,000! Would've been much easier if I just cheated some money to get it, instead each day I was running 4 meetings ($3000) + some hacking ($1000) + selling harvest ($300) + kids working ($600) + wife ($1600) for about 3 weeks or so. Trying to control 4 sims at once is not fun at all :( I would leave them on high freewill if they didn't just stand there staring into space. There are some really big path blocks too, my sims found it impossible to put a book back on the shelf despite plenty of room to get to it (nobody was in the way), so I tried moving the bookshelf which didn't solve anything, instead I had to manually pick up the object and place it on there.
And ever since I met up with Gunther Goth he's now constantly stuck in the park amongst the brick garden and can't get out. Then there's my teenagers + me doing their homework and they ALWAYS walk away from me before I can go and sit down with them. Same thing happened when they were babies, everytime I went to pick them up they'd crawl to the other side of the house yet still EA haven't patched it. Thanks to all these little annoyances I've spent twice as long playing it
Oh and after AGES of wondering why my wife had a disgusting symbol for trash (since she's an undercover agent who sometimes has to look through trashcans to do reports) it wasn't until after I looked through her inventory and found 11 bags of trash which had to be taken out :p

I married off my sim to who was once my hot maid... She didn't have a house I could move into so she moved into mine, which wasn't a problem as I like my house. The wedding party was apparently just shy of epic and will be talked about for years to come...
She decided she wanted to follow the criminal path so I got her a job and after her first day she was arrested and had to spend what seemed forever in the local jail! I wasn't particularly impressed with this as it took a whole day to get her out of the mood slump this had put her in...
I now have two items stuck in my inventory which I can no longer interact with, which is starting to get a little annoying...I hoping a patch to fix this arrives soon...

What are they? I thought I had my kid's old homework stuck there forever but I was able to take it out of my inventory (click n hold, drop it somewhere, delete it)
I haven't played this in 2 days now since I'm back into Valkyria Chronicles :D Also waiting for some patches to come out and fix stuff

I think you can open the bookshelf and drag the book onto the list (unless it really is stuck). Pretty sure I've read about that guitar problem though, you have to buy another guitar if you want to play it

Downloaded a mod to remove the pixelation censor (came in a package file so its really easy to install - doesn't involve replacing files). Still disturbing to see that the sims go to the toilet with their pants still up :p
I've been loving these mods that keep on coming out. There's a new one called 'No Drift/Lower Level Free Cam Camera' which changes the camera controls and allows you to get right down to the ground level and also stops drifting. That involves replacing a file though so I might make a backup first

Someone's going to release a mod where the sims will pull there pants down? :p

Yeah, compared to what I saw in the trailers it feels like I'm playing a different game. I was really hoping we'd actually get to see our sims go to work and actually control them there rather than doing a bunch of waiting. Or even just the concerts/sport stadiums, there's too much waiting and not enough things to actually do aside from what you already did in TheSims2 but with less loading

Probably not but there have been mods in the past where the sims go nude to go to the toilet. :P

If you ever want to see some truly bizarre mods for The Sims 2 go to http://www.sexysims2.com/ and look for works by a guy called Bootsbrisket (from memory that was his name). Was easily the most talented mesh designer on the site but had an extremely peverse sense of design and humour. If I remember rightly one of his most impressive works was a pregnant woman with sections of her stomach removed and you could see the baby inside. It was gross but increadibly well designed.

I'm not overly impressed with Sims 3. I played the shit out of the original, a little out of Sims 2 when it came out (haven't touched it for ~4 years). Sure, they've added a little to Sims 3 but the mundane activities are still just as ridiculously boring as before. Not only that, but the amount of furniture etc. is extremely limited... unless I'm missing something?
One thing I do very much like is the fact that you can place things diagonally now (and also put things like bedside tables etc. right up against walls). That said, I think somebody might've told me that you can do that after a certain expansion of The Sims 2?

They've released a patch... It doesn't fix any of the problems I've been having though :(
Complete list of changes:
* Addresses some issues with Speed 2 and 3 moving too slowly. Some machines will have better results when using Speed 2 and 3 now.
* Fix to story progression on/off selection toggle.
* Fix for a possible crash with audio code.
* Fix for babysitter routing off lots with babies.
* Addresses some issues with Vsync and refresh rate problems.
* Addresses some issues with DVD authentication errors and drive compatibility on startup.
* This update deals with some issues on Mac systems that can crash the game while connecting to AFP servers.
* Fix for a freeze that can occur when Sims attempt to clean out bad food from the fridge.

Finally picked this up. As with all Sims games I'm having a ball but I will say that it does feel a bit content anaemic compared to the second game.
That said I've already downloaded the relevant content creation tools (God bless Delphy and his obsession with application writing) and will plan on fixing that right away.
I must tip my hat for the patterns system. I was surprised how robust it is and how many options it gives you. So much easier to theme a home and get that unique look on clothes without having to delve in to third party applications.

No. A game mod was written over at www.modthesims.info that allowed diagonal placement but because it was not officially supported by the game it was not a perfect implementation and would have some clipping issues.
