View Full Version : Perfect Dark Remake

A HD compatible version of N64 classic Perfect Dark has just been announced. The game will be able to run at 1080p at 60fps.
So far it seems like all the original features will be included, but now with a co-op campaign mode that actually works. There will probably be online features, but no firm details have been announced. Developer duties will not be undertaken by Rare, but instead by a lesser known studio who handled the PS3 port of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
Surely someone here is excited;)

Meh, it was a good game at the time but i thought it lacked atmosphere. A bit too saturday morning cartoon for me. Good news for those that like it though.

yea personally at the time i thought it was great but i'm not sure how well it has aged. still great news.
I played it through 3/4 of the way again 2 or 3 years ago - I loved it all over again. The later levels can be quite challenging.

I liked how unlimited ammo - no reloads was significantly easier to unlock than just the standard unlimited ammo. Sadly it didn't apply to the Psychosis gun :(
I don't think many games since PD have had so many extra bits which add to the immersion - the Carrington Institute with the hologram training room, the target area, the hoverbike, the hovercrate, the gadget training etc. Actions in one mission affected things that would happen in the next - let someone live, and in the next stage he'd let you into a secret area. Finish the air base one way and you'd end up starting Air Force One in the cargo bay, making objectives easier. The Pond Punk bar in Chicago.
There was a huge variety of weapons that seemed more concerned with being Awesome and less concerned with being balanced (Farsight anyone?) and some innovative multiplayer modes (VIP, hold the briefcase etc were new ideas at the time). And tons of levels too. GRID! I can't freakin WAIT to play Grid again.
And the bots! It was always great to throw a Dark PeaceSim in the mix and run in terror whenever you saw one from fear of being blinded by its disarm punch.
I have trouble playing the N64 version thanks to the abysmal framerate, but I seriously can't wait for the remake. This time I will finish War on Perfect Agent!

Haha same, it probably doesn't though. Glad I only paid $10 for it. Can't wait for this though. Anyone else remember the trick where you fired the camera rocket launcher in the shooting range, got it outside and found cheese on the balcony? The institute hub area was such a great idea.

Marginally; I have fielded the idea that a control stick significantly outperforms 4 directional buttons in a controller Vs keyboard&mouse argument a long time ago, but it's really only a minor enhancement. It's a frickin' FPS, you probably won't be doing any fine-tuned platforming. (definitely not in PD)

Start a capture the flag (briefcase?) game in Felicity with timed mines as the only weapon. Put 8 meatsims on the opposing team, and keep restarting the game until they spawn with their base in the toilet area. After a short amount of time they'll throw a mine down in their base, kill themselves, pick up more mines after respawning, and kill themselves again. You get the kills for their deaths and they just keep ticking up and up.

Gotta love MeatSims, as well as the rest of them. Perfect Dark had the best bots - my brothers and I loved having VengeSims on - Cassandra's head on Mr. Blonde's body was the scariest; as soon as you saw that creepy tall bitch appear, we used to shit our pants as she got her revenge. I loved how you could save your custom game types, right down to music choices and bot face/body combos. I really hope these can be played online with friends, and possibly even shared!
I used to be so uncreative with my character, though - I played Joanna Leather as my character, she kicks arse. Oh, and I love the scary crouch-walking animations...they looked like they were sliding around like daleks. Nothing worse than being killed by surprise, and a dalek Mr. Blonde slides past you as you fall...

I like Perfect Dark: Source.
I may be alone here, but I much prefer the control/aiming method of goldeneye and PD on consoles as opposed to the dual stick method.
I'm not saying its better, I couldn't imagine playing current FPS games without the dual stick setup. But I don't like the thought of playing PD using current gen control schemes.
Now if only they could remake the original Conkers multiplayer for live instead of the shit they put in the xbox remake...

that's not the point at all. perfect dark didn't have a proper freelook aiming because buttons are worthless for camera control - it had that shitty 'hold r and the crosshair moves around the screen' system, and that was ****ing painful.

Lex is right, the controller set-up is horrible compared to the Halo configuration. You couldnt use the sniper rifle in split-screen Goldeneye because it took you about thirty seconds to line it up, while your friends sniggered at you.
Im torn on this re-release. The idea of current-gen Perfect Dark is amazing, it's still one of the most advanced games getting around, but surely a re-release will just highlight it's flaws and remove the charm? However, on the other hand, a re-release may mean I might finally finish the game on Agent (spent my whole time playing multiplayer + simulants, capture the case).

Nah I think Fenrir meant the second control scheme which made the C-buttons move forward/back and strafe left and right. So then you could free aim on the analogue stick.
But still, a second stick like on the 360 would provide better movement as it'd be analogue not digital.

in terms of story, graphics, framerate, and single player level design.. yes it was better
but for multi player options and levels, weapons, and sound perfect dark is.. perfect
over all.. perfect dark, i'd say is the better game, it was just ruined slightly by poorer graphics than ge and a piss weak framerate
BOTH OF WHICH THE 360 WILL FIX.
i was a rare fan before the snes and will be one after the 360. and perfect dark is up there with the best. not only in terms of rares games (still say conker takes number 1 and viva pinata number 3) but also as fps (its still the best console fps. i cop flack for this wherever i go but: HALO, AND TIMESPLITTERS SUCK in comparison... and yes you can make a counter claim when you've owned every game in all 3 series too ;)).

Perfect Dark was the game i obsessed over the most during high school.
I remember how awesome it was that it came out the day after my last yr 12 mid year exam, so on my day off i got to spend it all playing 4 player split screen with my mates WAY into the morning.
I cant think of any game i played more than PD.
being able to give co-op /counter operative a go will be great (don't actually expect them to be good but at least playable with a solid frame rate.)
i remember giving PD a go via emulator to get a good frame rate and keyboard and mouse, never quite worked.
60fps Perfect Dark will be brilliant.
now all i need is the never ever going to happen 1080p 60fps Ocarina of Time Remake and i can forget all about stupid "NEW" games

Damn, need to spread before pepping ya, that sucks!
Oh man, I loved this game, and I know I'ma gonna love it all over again. The level design near the end of the game was the only thing that was remotely bad a bout it. OH and the ending.
I took it to school and hooked it up in the auditorium. four player split screen with 60 inches of screen real estate per player? We got kicked out after one too many raucous lunchtimes.
I had a holy trinity of 64 games we used to play constantly; Mario Kart 64 (Red Power Slides FTW), NBA Hangtime (Best game in the NBA JAM series IMO) and GoldenEye. But when PD came out that was it. Anyone remember how you had to buy the bloody RAM expansion pak just to play 90 pc of it? Without it you could only play 2 player Combat Simulator. No carrington Institute, no solo missions, nothing!
Anyway, Ima kill you all when this comes out. Hope they maintain a classic control scheme though. I was the only one of my mates who used the C buttons to move and the stick to aim. Love to see that replicated if just for retro kicks.

1. Get Hovercrate
2. Take Hovercrate to target practice
3. Do the "stand halfway in the door" trick and throw as many knives as possible into the crate during the Bronze test.
4. Take hovercrate full of knives to carrington's office
5. Go back to target area, blow hovercrate up with farsight
6. Do the "cloak" gadget training
7. Get to Carrington's office, pick up knives, select knives, fill Carrington with knives.
8. Oh, Joanna! How did you get here?

I think everyone did. I loved the combat simulator challenges and the Carrington Institute training facilities. All gold in the firing range! Worth every minute.
My favorite moment came during one of the combat challenges. I think it was Challenge 14. It featured one hit kills and the laptop gun. Through experimentation I eventually came to a strategy of deploying laptop guns every where in a little room as quickly as possible. Then I ran to an area where the bot had to cross a bridge to get to me. I then set myself up so I could just stick out from cover and take quick pot shots as the bot tried to cross the bridge. If I missed the bot would strafe and fall into the room below featuring laptop guns and be defeated anyway. Magic!
In other challenges you could exploit glitches to pause your enemies when you were in front and win.
You could exploit the bots choice of a powerful automatic weapon and camp in a small room holding a grenade launcher knowing your opponent had to activate a slowly activating automatic door to get to you. Fire off a few explosive rounds through the gap and then grab the body armour sitting just outside. Fantastic stuff!

I think it would be a bit silly if they made some parts of the game hi-res and pretty and left other parts untouched. It's not an entire overhaul, the character/weapon models look the same, and the level geometry is unchanged. Still, pretty excited for this. Playable PD will be awesome.

Playable PD will be awesome.Well, they've obviously done more than just clean up textures; they've replaced them entirely. And while level geometry is understandably untouched, those Skedar models are clearly built from scratch.
I wish the Goldeneye revamp had been released. It had been upgraded in a similar fashion. I would have played the absolute **** out of that game. Nintendo were just worried that when the HD version arrived on XBLA, and the VC only got the original, the vast differences would make the Wii look bad. That game was finished, and ****ing bureaucracy got in the way.
Anyway, at least we're getting this. In all honesty, I spent far more time with PD's multiplayer than I did Goldeneye's, but vice versa for single player.

Actually, the weapon model for the CMP150 in those screens look a lot more detailed than the original (they even chucked in some iron sights). It's probably safe to assume the character models have been given a modest makeover as well.

the framerate SHOULD be constant 60. The graphics arent anything that will vex the 360 at all, so smooth 12 player games shouldnt be an issue.

Yeah, sadly there's not been much news so it's gone from "omg excited" to "where's more news?" to "trollan" to "omg news excited".
A developer diary would be fun but it'd probably only highlight how lazy these ****s are, seeing as they can't even get the game out before the new year.

For all the haters, I'd definitely recommend going back and playing Perfect Dark, if you're able. This is a massive improvement. I'm quite looking forward to Attack Ship: Covert Assault - there's a section where you have to hold the ship's bridge and the framerate slows to a crawl more than in any other section of the game.
One of the things in PD that I never managed to do was unlock Unlimited Ammo, No Reloads (complete the air base level on Special Agent in 3:11, IIRC). Definitely aiming for it this time around :D
EDIT: In the original PD, one of the available heads for multiplayer was Shigeru Miyamoto's. Somehow I doubt it'll be in the remake, but it'd be pretty hilarious if it was.

Most of the design is OK... but I just can't stand the horribly unresponsive controls. Makes it feel like you're playing it drunk.
Maybe try playing it drunk. It might correct itself. :p
To those who didn't get past that early level I have two things to say - there are one or two fantastic levels towards the end of the game (admittedly in amongst a bunch of average ones), and the game is infinitely more fun played Co-op. The bridge assault at the very end is quite something.

Another bug I remembered:
In one of the multiplayer maps, there's a thin platform lift going up and down. If one person stands on it and the other stands underneath it, the bottom person will be pushed through the elevator and the top person will then be standing on his head. The elevator will go up, but the players won't go down with it and will float in the air. Then, when the elevator comes back up again, they will be pushed up further, through the ceiling and as far out of the level as they want to go.

There are two other changes that are probably worth mentioning, both of them for the better. Practically everything is unlocked from the get-go, meaning you no longer have to slog through the main campaign to piece your multiplayer options together,
Kinda good, but also kinda sad. I liked unlocking things. Can't wait for N-bomb spam though :D
EDIT: I realise the cheats will most likely still require unlocking. But the "everything unlocked" deal makes the challenges pointless as they were the only way to get certain levels and guns.
It also makes the firing range less cool. It was cool doing a mission then coming back to the Carrington Institute and finding all those cool new guns in the firing range. Now I guess they'll all be there from the start. I hope the gadget training and hologram rooms still have to be unlocked bit by bit. And the Hangar/Office PC bios, come to think of it.

Looks like there's a couple of people complaining about the control schemes. Apparently there are no "Legacy" controls (Left stick forward/backwards and turning, right stick look up/down and strafing) and there's no way to strafe run so hitting target times to get cheats is more difficult.
*shrug*
Inability to strafe run might be a pain, especially since I'm keen to unlock as many cheats as possible. Lack of Legacy controls doesn't bother me since it doesn't really work the same on an Xbox controller as it did on the N64.

No no, no transferring at all! That's just the online version of the XBLA, specifically the American version. You can buy games and they are automatically added to your download queue, then when your Xbox next signs into Live the download starts automatically. It's common to check online for big releases because you can queue the download from a different XBLA region (eg Holland and Canada always seem to get the Forza 3 DLC before us) and it will still download and work, even when it might not be in the marketplace on your console yet. Gee, maybe Microsoft funbucks aren't so bad after all. ;)

as for the remake, the bump in res looks great and moves at a nice rate. will give it more time but manual aim is horrible. it brings back good memories but im interested to see how impatient i have become as well as how much i remember
I just managed to get it by downloading the trial, playing the first level, and when it gave me the option of downloading the full game (for earning an avatar or something), I chose 'unlock full game'. It worked fine. Prior to doing that I was getting the error message.

I think Blake said he dl'd scrap metal too, I've got the trial. 1200 points is an ugly, ugly price point to me.
Yeah the trial, but with all the work I have due I'll never get to play it.
Also I don't really see the point in the different control schemes in perfect dark if none of them give me move and look on the one stick.
I NEVER GOT USED TO DUAL STICKS OK?

I usually turn auto-aim off on console shooters but immediatly turned it back on with this one, seemed pretty impossible to control precisely. I am pretty surprised they didn't include an n64 control equivalent.
Given how, even with the reskin, very ugly the game is by current standards, I still felt a particular thrill when a crowd of guards opened fire on my elevator and glass shattered all around me. I didn't expect the game to have an effect like that so it was a
real retro kind of surprise - how my younger self would have been amazed by it OMG GLASS.
I remember being amazed by the (horrible!) realistic faces on Goldeneye's characters...

Downloaded fine this morning.
They ****ed that one up. Everything else is acceptable.

This port is fantastic. The game looks absolutely gorgeous!
I almost had a major nerd rage last night when I was making a combat simulator game and there were hardly any weapons - I thought they omitted most of them. Of course, when I bought the original game it was second hand and they were automatically there. Now, I find, that it seems you must unlock them. Not sure how. All I know is that the firing range seems to add more guns as I play through single player.
For the control scheme haters, Rare tweeted this morning that for those who want the original scheme, they're looking into it.

Didn't check what guns were unlocked in the combat simulator, looks like you may have to do challenges to unlock them, then? Fun.

I had all sorts of trouble getting this game last night. I managed to finally get it to download when I manually browsed to it in the market place and downloaded the trial, then upgraded to the full version straight away.
I'm actually surprised how much I was enjoying it. It's still a hoot watching enemies react to getting shot, and that clumsy roll they bust out every so often. It's definitely quite a throwback, but at the same time it doesn't feel like a game I haven't played in about 8 years. I turned off auto aim since that was annoying me, but I must say that its hard to aim with the second stick. It's easier just to strafe to line up the shot. I'm sure I'll adapt.
Can anyone tell me what the head roll and look straight options do? I couldn't tell when I activated and deactivated them.

In the shooting range the guns unlock as you access them in the main game as before. At a glance the PC's seem to have all the files available. I'm not sure about the gadget training.

Gadget Training and Firing Range are both unlocked progressively as in the first game. The bios, however, are all there from the start, which is a shame.

What difficulty are people playing through on? I started up on Secret Agent, found the objectives horribly vague, and realised that running and gunning through Agent mode would probably be more fun.
Also, simulants > playing random folks online with horrible lag and multiple teamkills.

I picked up the strategy guide many years back for $5 (and can remember most of the game anyway) so the objectives aren't an issue, though thinking back I can see how it would be difficult to figure things out given that most of it is pretty vague. Chicago: Stealth is particularly bad for it, especially on Perfect Agent.
Here's a couple of tips I remembered for specific levels:
Area 51: Escape
On Agent difficulty, to finish in the time limit required for the Invincibility cheat you should let Jonathan open the doors for you. On all other difficulties you should choose to do the doors yourself, as it means Jonathan will appear in the Carrington Institute: Defence level and assist you with an objective.
Air Base: Espionage
Overloading the laser grid and entering the plane from underneath allows you to bypass an objective in Special Agent or higher on the next level.
Air Force One: I can't remember the subtitle
In the cargo hold (you start here if you enter the plane from underneath) there's a hoverbike. Releasing it from its restraints means it'll appear in Crash Site: Confrontation, allowing you to travel through the level much quicker.
Downloaded the demo.
Unfortunately, rather then bringing back nostalgia, all it did for me was highlight how far we've come since then.
Yeah, I was the opposite of this. All it reminded me of is how far head of it's time PD was, and how little fps has changed since then. Why the **** is counter-op not a staple of every single game that could possibly support it?

I've got one of those old strategy guides too. Damn near essential for Perfect Agent, which I'm going through on, it's bloody hard, especially with these new controls. Takes a bit of getting used to. I've found that lowering the sensitivity helps for me.
I've had some pretty hilarious multiplayer battles. Easy to get frustrated sometimes when you can't find a weapon before getting mowed down by the guy with two RP90s, but the arcade style is refreshing. Lag isn't too bad all the time too.
I've tried some online Co-Op a couple of times but have found it unplayable.
I'll be on tonight with a a friend around 7:30pm WA time if anyone is keen, add me :)
p.s. Lex, agreed, counter op is amazing. Can't wait to play it online.
Edit: Are we realllly limited to 4 sims now, or do you have to unlock them? Pretty sure you didn't in the N64 one.

I started out on secret agent and having adjusted to the controls I'm finding it fairly easy. That said even after all these years I remember the levels quite well as I'm playing through them. The objectives are a bit vague, be sure to read the extra info in the menu for each one. You'll find most things out just poking around the levels, often there's a prompt when you are in the right area for an objective.

Thats good to know. I was wondering about that after only being able to add four to a game last night. I'm looking foward to some mass Meat Sim slaughter.

I heard you could get a second Falcon 2 in that level if you made it past all the guards at the start without being spotted. No idea how the hell that works, since you get shot up as soon as you open the first door :/

In some it's absolutely essential - if you take a few hits too early you might as well restart (though last night I did almost the entire third level with red health after fiddling around with a different control scheme at the start of the level and getting shot up - got killed by the last bodyguard, dammit!)

Did it last night, it's easier than it sounds. You have to pop them all in the head.
First guard won't see you when you open the door. The second is the real trouble, open it to the right side so he won't see you, then back up till the end of the room, you can take aim then and he won't see you. The 3rd and 4th you can clip in the head by being cheap and peaking around a corner, same with 5th. 5th will drop another.
What I couldn't pull off was the extra falcon 2 in the 2nd level. If you make it all the way down to the bot reprogramming area without being seen, the weapons cache will open up. Can't even get past the bloody first guard!

Thanks for that, I'll try again tonight. Then again, I'll probably just go for the speed run to get Hurricane Fists. There's a proxy mine in the second level behind the isotope, if you're willing to lose some help running into the room. I don't think it really has a use - my first thought was for when you have to 'hack' the terminal near the end of the level to open up a door - and a guard sneaks up behind you. But you can just use a dragon.
Carrington Villa, if you go to the helipad near where you first exit the cave at the beginning, there's a bunch of crates. Blow em up, one has a devastator!
