So who else is excited for Scribblenauts (http://www.scribblenauts.com/index.html)? It's a totally awesome game released in the US in September that is developed by 5TH Cell, the dudes that made Drawn to Life and Lock's Quest, and it looks shit-hot.

Read about it on Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scribblenauts)

Basically, you have to get stars using items that you create by typing it in. It's sounds like it'll be a truckload of fun just mucking around with that system alone!

Why, here's Joystiq's "Ten Word Challenge" (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/scribblenauts-passes-our-ten-word-challenge-with-flying-colors/#continued) where they attempt to stump Scribblenauts' item generation system.

...and here's God vs. Cthulhu (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=85476).

Yeah this games gonna be brilliant. 5th Cell have really caught everyone by surprise by making some really great creative games for the DS. It's easily my most anticipated game for the forseeable future. I also wrote more about it here. (http://signalsin.blogspot.com/2009/05/scribblenauts.html)

8. Plumbob -- No dice! The game's lead designer was hanging over our shoulder as we entered in this unrecognized word. He quickly asked what it was, pulled out his phone and feverishly sent some unknown party a text message. "Okay," he said. "It'll be in the final product."

That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time.

And yes, I am looking forward to this game as well. 5th Cell seem to have the Midas touch at the moment. Watching the videos and reading the write-ups makes me want it even more!

Woo, glad to see a thread on this! It looks like it would be worth a purchase just to play with the core mechanic of writing shit up and seeing it interact.

I'm guessing that it will be possible to pass most stages using a few powerful words - e.g. the strongest monster to kill anything, a cherrypicker to get to high places, etc... but you'll have much more fun coming up with outrageous shit :P

PrattP

Then I'd know I could really use any tool at my disposal. :D

Actually no, that preview said that you can't use the same thing to pass a level that you used to pass the previous one (or something to that effect) so you actually do have to stay creative and keep coming up with new things!

This is officially the coolest concept for a game ever.

Taken from GAF:

Concrete Objects Only
No Proper Nouns
No Copyrighted Words
No Adjectives
E-E10 rated words only - this means No Vulgar/Offensive/Lewd/Drug/Alcohol related words

Other than that... it works

Tried this today... Holy awesome. It does everything but copywrited and vulgar stuff.

It did shrimp, lighter, pool, zombie, pirate, ninja, ping pong ball, grill, rollercoaster, lanyard, sword, chainsaw, trampoline, lawnmower, shiruken..

You can summon a corpse, battery, and wire, attach them and it will bring the corpse back to life . I also put raw meat on the grill and it cooked it!

Vampires are afraid of garlic bread.
Sasquatch is afraid of cameras.

I had played all the big titles at E3. Private showings of God of War III, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake. But at 4:00 on Thursday, I was wandering around the show floor, wondering what else I had to see. I saw a small little booth for "Scribblenauts!" in the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment section. I mean, who goes to that booth? But I remember hearing about it on GAF, and so I decided to check it out.

Best game of E3? Without a ****ing doubt. Anyone who says otherwise did not play Scribblenauts. Best game of all time? Jesus Christ, I don't know, maybe. It's a game that challenges your IMAGINATION. No other game has ever done that.

So listen to this story. I was in the early levels; I didn't quite have an idea of how ridiculously in-depth the database was. I was summoning things like ladders, glasses of water, rayguns, what have you. But I reached a level with zombie robots, and the zombie robots kept killing me. Rayguns didn't work, a torch didn't work, a pickaxe didn't work. In my frustration, I wrote in "Time Machine". And one popped up. What the ****? A smile dawned on my face. I hopped in, and the option was given to me to either travel to the past or the future. I chose past. When I hopped out, there were ****ing dinosaurs walking around. I clicked one, and realized I could RIDE THEM. So I hopped on a ****ing DINOSAUR, traveled back to the present, and stomped the shit out of robot zombies. Did you just read that sentence? Did you really? I ****ING TRAVELED THROUGH TIME AND JUMPED ON A DINOSAUR AND USED IT TO KILL MOTHER****ING ROBOT ZOMBIES. This game is unbelievable. Impossible. There's nothing you can't do.

Holy ****ing shit.

from the escapist (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92458-The-Secret-of-Scribblenauts)

So how exactly did 5th Cell manage to squeeze seemingly every object imaginable into this game? There's no magic trick here, just a whole lot of work. "We actually had five people and all they did is they went through dictionaries and Wikipedia and encyclopedias, and anything you can think of, and that's all they did for six months, everyday, during the week," Jeremiah Slaczka, creative director, said.

....

"With the technology we basically said we're going to take all the base things like fire and temperature and gravity and physics and we're just going to put it down there, and the game's going to take and all that know what to do with it," Slackza said. "We don't have to program anything, so if a bear's hungry and wants honey, we don't have to program that, it's going to know it already.

5th Cell artist Edison Yan crafted this custom piece for the NeoGAF fan community, recreating the scene of "Post 217," in which a player time-traveled back to the past to retrieve a dinosaur, then rode it back into the future to stomp on robot zombies. Seriously.

Well, really, replay value is as limited as your imagination.

Having said that though, they seem to be putting a lot of effort into boosting the games life (the par system, not using the same objects, a heap of unlockables etc) for those people that absolutely need objectives.

There's one bit that made me lol:

We need something with a little more "oomph" to it. The problem? This level restricts the use of guns. No bazookas this time. Bring in any sort of weapon and the level ends, so watch what you type.

Is that Kingdom Hearts with the funny numbers game on DS gonna be a REAL game this time, or more of that card-battle bullshit that was on the GBA game? I liked that game, but gave up after running out of cards during boss battles left me unable to attack anything at all.

Great thinking Square Enix---

Think Tank: "Here's a simple fun game, how can we bollocks it up, ohh ohh put in some stupid cards that screw up your attacks and make people stop playing the game!"

I've never played a Kingdom Hearts game before, but looking at the info that's out there it seems to be a solid game this time around - Pushes the DS hardware to its limits for some nice visuals and sound (as you expect from Squeenix) and has gotten good review scores around the place...

Hey Jickle, remember this?

It's out September 16 here, the very next day. Importing will mean you get it later rather than earlier!

The irony is that I got the information from the very website you write for! (http://www.thenintendobasement.com/)

Well, guess what I just read at the very website that I write for?

September 30th will be the new Scribblenauts release date (rather than the 16th), after Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today confirmed a two week release delay.

Enjoy your two week wait guys! Suddenly my 1-4 day wait looks pretty damn sweet... :D

I think the fun is meant to be in your use of imagination, right, not simply completing the level in the easiest manner possible. Perhaps moreso than any other game I can think of, the enjoyment is surely meant to come from the obscurities of what you can do with it (each player has a different experience).

Sometimes it seems like a cop out to say 'you make your own fun' but with this it actually looks to be the point.

AranchineD
16-09-2009, 08:46 AM
Yeah, but actually trying to use your imagination with the crappy control system that's in the game just leads to frustration rather than fun. I mean, that's not in every case, but in a few it's a disappointing that what you want to do will work in theory but you just can't physically do it.

my pet hate is games that are unnecessarily frustrating, i can deal with extremely hard games as long as they are genuinely hard and not hard because of dodgy AI or rigged gameplay OR Horrible controls.

So have they removed that feature where you can only use a word ONCE during the single player campaign? Or is it an optional thing that you can switch on/off in the options screen? Or is it just not present in the pirated versions of the game?

Nope, if you want to tie 10 balloons to something you can just keep repeating balloon in the notepad (there's even a button to repeat your recently used words). I played around with a friend's copy today. First thing I did was summon a chicken, then an oven, which I put the chicken into, thus cooking it. I summoned God and Zeus, thinking that the two could battle, but they were the same model. Soon God was riding around on a dinosaur, and when I summoned a Goliath he was quickly killed. I summoned a Leviathan, but found that the damn thing couldn't be killed so I ended up trashing it. They I summoned a circus tent, and a clown came out of it. I made it a clown car, when it ran into and started driving around. I got rid of everything but my bar showed that I had a lot of stuff left in the scene, so I think the clown car was full of clowns.

I could definately see this being the ultimate 'sit down and waste an hour messing around with shit' game, even if the actual puzzles and the controls are flawed.

RunningMild
21-09-2009, 01:29 AM
I wouldn't say the puzzles are flawed. The later ones get pretty damn challenging (particularly if you're trying to meet par), which is pretty surprising for a game where you can summon almost anything! ;)

That's the good thing about this game IMO- once you get bored of messing around with stuff, you realise that there's actually a challenging game in there waiting to be conquered.

One particularly challenging one was

where you had to get candy for a girl from a vending machine, but there was a bully who impeded you. You couldn't kill him, and you couldn't scare him because you'd scare the girl too. After trying tons of different things, I solved it by summoning an anesthetist who put the bully to sleep! Classic stuff.

Agree with everyone about the controls. It seems to me if you could control Max with just the D-Pad then most of the frustration would be gone.

I mean I keep running into issues where I'm trying to attach something like a rope (eg. from a chopper to a seal) and missing the swinging rope by even one pixel can cause the helicopter I'm in to crash into the seal. The seal can then die, forcing a restart. Very frustrating, as is the way the camera snaps back all the time! GRR

Played some more of this tonight. I think the puzzle stages get boring after a while, but the action stages are the real meat of the game. I got some where I really had to think creatively, and when you come up with a zany scheme and pull it off successfully it's so satisfying!

Also, go to www.lilformers.com and read what that guy said about the game. ;)

AranchineD
25-09-2009, 09:30 AM
The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that the game would have been better, at least in the puzzle stages, if you didn't directly control an avatar at all, and instead you just drew items into the stage and the stages were entirely about creating and combining items to finish it. Perhaps give orders to an NPC or something to get the desired result as well.

I'm loving the game so far, irritating controls and all. I like the level where you have to give Santa something he likes but doesn't have there - I tried 'love', but it's not in the game, so it suggested 'lemon bird'. I gave that to him, but it didn't make him happy. I tried 'wife', but she wasn't interested in him. Then I typed in 'Mrs Claus' and a suitable Santa wife popped up, earning me the star.

In another level, I needed to move a lamb, so I stuck a fan behind it and kept pushing the fan forward. There was a body of water to cross, so I just stuck a boat in there. Good stuff.

RunningMild

AranchineD
26-09-2009, 11:11 AM
I found most of the time that the bridge ladder is fairly useless as well, since anytime anything other than your character jumps on it the physics like to spaz out and the bridge will just flip over and fall down the hole you were trying to cover.

Just had an awesome moment messing around in the title screen area. I'll spoiler tag it incase you want to figure out all 22,000 odd words for yourself. >_>

I summoned a Leviathan, used a mind control device to tame it, started to ride it then summoned a Hydra. The Leviathan wasn't moving and the Hydra kept attacking me, so I summoned a tank and started to attack. As I drove over the Leviathan it reared up, shooting my tank into the air. My tank flew backwards, doing several backflips while still firing at the Hydra in mid-air. It landed flat and killed the Hydra with a few more shots. It was awesome.

Vertical Take Off & Landing. I originally typed it expecting to get a Harrier but it gave me this:

"We deeply regret the unfortunate oversight that led to the word being included in the game," a company spokesman said. "The word was included as a reference to a Spanish based term for a fig leafed gourd but clearly upon review the word should have been excluded entirely." Yeah, it was just typical gaming press trying to create controversy where there is none.

Also having a Scribblenauts article guarantees hits for the moment, so they're milking it for all they can.

Jeez, they should have known better! TBH i had never heard of the word sambo before, in any context, except as a nickname for someone called Samuel.

But I had heard of the watermelon/fried chicken stereotypes about African-Americans. And the image of a grinning huge-lipped African-American is as stereotypical as they come.

Hope the game isn't pulled or anything, for the greater good.

Probably looked at the word list and thought "What the?!.."

Why would they remove english words from the PAL release? If people don't use them there's no reason to remove them.

It seems unlikely that it was intentional, given the vast amount of words people were going through, and the different cultural contexts of different words - it surprising there are not MORE possibly offensive words in the game, I'm sure somebody will find something else, another word with multiple meanings etc

I was just messing around with the American version and it seems that the word 'bogan' works. It creates the same character that red-neck does. So it seems that the US gets words that are used solely in Australia, but Australia doesn't get words that are used globally. It makes no sense at all.

Alright, this is crazy- bogan does not work in the PAL version.

I've got a story about this up on IGN AU (http://au.ds.ign.com/articles/102/1028744p1.html), I'll ask the guys if they can edit that in. That's crazy.

I can't believe they left out VTOL. It's the coolest thing ever! Sure, it probably behaves exactly like a helicopter, but why have a boat when you can have a pirate ship or a trireme or an aircraft carrier... ;)

I've found the most effective way to get rid of any sharks and piranhas is to drop an electrical appliance into the water, and it doesn't count as a weapon!

So far I've used a toaster, hairdryer and a blender!

Of course! Man my imagination sucks - I used a crocodile to kill the small shark and a missile for the big one. I'm up to the Heist level and I can't work out how to knock the guards out. I've tried: tear gas, invisibility cloak, chloroform, tranquilizer dart, sleeping gas, burgler.

If that's the one I'm thinking of- my solution was to summon a car past the tripwire, and attach a rope to the car and the other end to the iceblock with the Starite in it. I tapped the car so Maxwell would run to it and jump straight in (setting off the tripwire), then I floored it the other way. This meant that the starite didn't fall into the lava. ;)

I needed to get to some starrite that was in an annoying position.

"I know I'll just teleport to it!" I thought to myself, so I made 2 teleporters, put one near me and the other near the starrite thinking it would beam me from one to the other, but it transported me to some lab place. I wasn't sure of what to do there so I just teleported back to the level and found a different way, but at least they stop it from being too easy!

In another level I had to get rid of a bunch of rougues, so I summoned a Superhero and he beat them all up. I also summoned a cyborg to kill some guys too, but he also tried to attack me.
