For us luddittes resisting the move to the next generation, we eagerly await the few interesting releases left for our, what, 7 year old system? Nb: But still to 'young' to be in the retro section!
There's so few damn games coming out for the machine, and fewer still exclusives, surely we can lump them together into a single thread now?
Setting the tone, I would expect this thread to have;
Online petitions to get Ryu ga Gotoku 2 (Yakuza 2) translated into english.
Same as above, but for a butt-load of J-RPGs.
Interesting accessory or case modifications (or generally getting the console to do things it was initially unintended to do)
Accessory excess: I have a guitar, to mics, a camera, VGA adaptor, multitap an arcade stick, DVD remote, two G-cons and a headset with microphone, but I know that collection will be dwalfed here.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro-Am
Comparisons between Wii and PS2 versions of the same game
People playing Manhunt 2. Not in Australia of course, that would be very naughty.
Begin!

How about we just do a write-up of all the games worth a damn. If there's nothing new coming out, we can cross-reference and fill in the gaps in our collections.

Nothing much coming to the PS2 is worth it to be honest...unless I don't know of a few killer apps still to come...if so, can someone post these.
Anyway, one of the (very) few reasons I don't use my PS2 slimline solely for DVD's:

As far as PS2 accessories go, my personal fave is my set of 3D glasses.
They never really took off and most people don't even know they exist.
Some PS2 games were much better when played in full colour widescreen 3D. Square-Enix's Drakengard was brilliant in 3D. Both the on-ground and air battles had a great sense of depth. I even used them to explore Midgar in 3D in Dirge Of Cerberus, though that novelty still wasn't enough to make the game worth completing.
Much like the Virtual Boy, the glasses kill your eyes pretty quickly though. After more than an hour of PS2 3D, the real world looks grainy and weird. Not a good sign.

Well, the only games on the PS2 that are really worth a damn is pretty much God Of War 1 & 2, and a few rpgs that escape my mind atm, GTA SA and the PoP series and FF12. But theyre already released. Hence, not much in the way of frap worthy titles on the way for the ol' PS2.

What if the PS3 never gets any games that interest them enough to warrant buying it?
As for me, I've made my position clear: When the $600 120GB HDD/Dualshock 3 bundle hits in March/April next year, I'll be first in line for the damn thing.
(Assuming some other member of the household doesn't buy one before then.)
Kloppy

I know what he's talking about: they may cost a grand now, but in the future, (eventually) they'll be only charging $300 or so for them.
I put it this way, the gamecube got a price cut to $99 and I still didn't buy one... and it's not like the gamecube didn't have some great exclusives either, so I was tempted.
Stormo got the main reason though. I get into a console quite late usually when there's some real diversity in the library. By that I mean it has games that have no parallel. So for example, Heavenly Sword maybe awesome but it hasn't got game dynamics that I can't get on me ol' dusty PS2 with some God o War.

I bought a PS2 rather late and I only have these games:
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss
Xenosaga 1
Xenosaga 2
Xenosaga 3
The list of JRPGs that Creedy posted was useful, it gave me some more
games to consider getting.
I guess I should get Rouge Galaxy if nothing else.
I really only got the PS2 because I enjoyed Tales of Symphonia so much on
the GC and I wanted to play more "Tales" games.
Not getting a PS3, too expensive and no games I am interested in yet.
More likely to get a 360 for Mass Effect.
I never really had any console brand loyalty, I just get what I need to play
the games I want.

I loved Oni on the PC years ago. It's very simplistic action game with a decent story where the focus is more on the fighting than anything else. I remember Hyper giving it a great review when it came out, and at the time I thought justifiably so. That was back in about 2001 though.
On Ps2 however it's a little awkward to control. When I get my Ps2 (I'm buying my friends) I'll probably try it out again, but I do remember it being rather difficult to control the guns in particular.

Amanda Winn Lee and Sherry Lynn did the voice acting for the 2 main characters I'm pretty sure which made the experience a lot more rewarding than reading a bunch of subtitles.
I really enjoyed it, only ever played the PC version though and whilst it had its problems (big areas, limited interaction, somewhat sloppy combat) it included anime styled characters and a decent story. Worth a PC purchase (only $10 at EB) but not the PS2 unless you like slow framerates and low-res graphics

I owned a GC during the previous generation.
I would have bought a PS3 but Sony made some dubious choices.
o Limited PS2 backward compatibility on PAL systems,
then no backward compatibility at all.
o Persisting with region lockouts on PS2 mode
o No rumble on the controlers.
o high price
Since I didn't have a PS2 and there were PS2 games I wanted to try,
the removal of PS2 compatibility killed the idea of getting a PS3
for me. Probably too late to import a US 60GB PS3 now.
XBOX 360 seemed to have hardware reliability problems, didn't have HD-DVD
and seemed less likely to have the sort of games that interested me.
(With the exception of Mass Effect)
The Wii was interesting but the games catalog just doesn't impress,
Zelda Twilight Princess was the only title of interest to me and
I could get that for my Cube anyway.
I'm not hung up on having next gen performace, the Wii has plenty
of horsepower for running 480p graphics.
I decided to import a new slim US NTSC PS2 and buy all the PS2
games I had been missing out on.
So far I have picked up these:
* Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
* Rogue Galaxy
* Shadow Hearts
* Shadow Hearts: Covenant
* Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
* Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
* Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga
* Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga 2
* Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time
* Tales of Legendia
* Tales of the Abyss
* Xenosaga 1
* Xenosaga 2
* Xenosaga 3
* Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
mainly new copies at quite reasonable prices thanks to the strengthening
Aussie dollar. (Except for Nocturne, which was pretty pricey for a
used copy, I hope it is worth it.)
Anything else I should be thinking of picking up?
I've been thinking about these:
Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
Ace Combat 5: The unsung war
Ace Combat 0: The Belkan confict
Aero Elite: Combat Academy
Battlestar Galactica
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XII
God of War 1
God of War 2
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ico
Okami
Orphen: Scion of Sorcery
Radiata Stories
Shadow of the Colossus
I'm mainly into RPG games, Action Adventure, SciFi, Aircraft,
not so much into RTS, FPS, Sports or Driving.
I wonder where all the JRPG games are going to end up on in the current
generation? It's been a traditional strong area for the PS2, but
if the PS3 market share doesn't increase....
Maybe this time round the JRPGs will be coming to the Wii?
Oh well, with so many PS2 game to play through now, I can afford to wait
and see.

I'm not sure how seriously you're supposed to take God of War, it's not Glengarry Glen Ross. Oh yes, it is hilarious. You hear Kratos yell "ARIES!!!!", then you go mash up a megaquajillion demon doggies. Either that or he yells "ZEUS!!!!" and you do pretty much the same thing. You know that when he yells out someone's name, it spells the death of a ridonkulous number of evil magic henchman. (and it'll happen a dozen times in the game) I find that inherently funny.

I think the 9000x latest PStwo model to be released is Japan with the AC adapter built in. I'd rather opt for the 7700X series (pink if it has to be) since it's the most recent build. Don't think the 7900X series will be released here, but if it does I'll pick one up as a spare.

Well IX is already confirmed for DS.
IMO X will stay on a Ninty platform, not sure which though.
I really hope it doesn't go to the DS. 3D DS games just look ass, I'm sorry.
It'd be slightly less disappointing if it went to the Wii, but come on, how can you not hope it goes to 360 or PS3?
The whole point is to go on an epic adventure, and the battles are turn based. Waggle and or touch screen + last generation or the generation before that graphics, would SUCK.
Damn everyone who buys Nintendo consoles for being part of the problem >_>

Dengeki's reader base revealed! How niche are their magazine readers to have this as the results of a poll conducted over the past two weeks?
"What is the best game you played during 2007?"
1. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Sony PSP)
2. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Sony PSP)
3. Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo Wii)
4. Dragon Quest IV (Nintendo DS)
5. Super Robot Taisen Original Generations (Sony PlayStation 2)
6. Persona 3 (Sony PlayStation2)
7. Etrian Odyssey (Nintendo DS)
8. Ar Tonelico 2 (Sony PlayStation 2)
9. Fate/stay night [Realta Nua] (Sony PlayStation2)
10. Lost Odyssey (Xbox360)
· "What is the best game you ever played?"
1. Final Fantasy VII (Sony PlayStation)
2. Final Fantasy X (Sony PlayStation 2)
3. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Sony PSP)
4. Xenogears (Sony PlayStation)
5. Tales Of The Abyss (Sony PlayStation 2)
6. Dragon Quest III (Super Famicom)
7. Dragon Quest VIII (Sony PlayStation 2)
8. Chrono Trigger (Super NES)
9. Suikoden II (Sony PlayStation)
10. Okami (Sony PlayStation 2)

Definitely good! But it really is the nerdiest of hardcore gamers (i.e., people like me) that vote in these polls -- their readership really doesn't represent much of the gaming audience, which is what I kinda meant by posting that -- Okami and Lost Odyssey have both sold quite poorly over there, so to make it into the top ten really paints a picture of how small their readership base is!
I wished I owned some of those games...

Call this a cop-out but I really think that with games as old and as lasting as FF1 &2, there's been enough evolution in the broader genre to warrant critiquing those games separately. You can enjoy FF 1& 2 just as much as DQ8, Persona 3, etc - just on a different level.
Lazlow

Well clearly I'm comparing to games of the same era - by surpass, implies that games have come out since that better it in every way.
And I would list them, but I CBF the list would be too long.

No, not really. It ultimately brings us back to the subjectivity of what constitutes, "good". I enjoy a lot of NES games, not because of nostalgia, but because of a level of purity and focus in design. The, "game", is well defined and not really just an expansive multimedia experience.

You gotta own component cables. PS3 component cables can be used for the PS2 (the official Sony cables AFAIK).
All them new big screen TVs have component inputs, so why not.

I noticed a significant difference on my CRT when changing to component, and while it's not like switching to HD or anything, for the price I think it is well worth it. Also, as Starscream mentioned you can also use the PS2 component cable for a PS3, and vice versa.
One thing I wold suggest is to see if you can get a 'PS2' labelled cable rather than a 'PS3' one, as it may be cheaper given that that branding is for an 'old' product.

To be fair, sometimes peripherals can be region specific. Memory cards are.
Also, the firmware updates are apparently based on region, so why not the controllers?

The only case I know where memory cards are region locked is for the JAP GC. If you put a PAL/US GC memory card with game saves on it, the Japanese GC console will ask you to reformat it. If you then put the JAP GC memory card on a US/PAL console, the console will ask you if you want the memory reformatted as well.

I played my share of Japanese games on my modded PS2 with PAL memory cards, but I always was under the impression that the cards had to come from the same region as the console, due to voltages or something along those lines.
Where was the card and the console from? I'd hazard a guess and say the same region. I'm happy to be proven wrong if that's the case.

PS2 mem cards can be used on any console.
PS2 mem cards can store different game saves from different region PS2s.
GC mem cards can be used on any GC console, but as I've previously stated, the GC will not allow shared saves between the JAP region and any other region and vice versa.

The reason for this, apparently, is due to character encodings. Japanese cards use a two-byte encoding (Nintendo obviously hadn't heard of Unicode when they made the Gamecube) while western cards use a one-byte encoding.
So it's more a technological limitation than any malicious attempt at region-locking.
I've heard that some games are fine regardless of the memory card type, too.

OT: consoul do you know if the 9000x series PS2 are multi-voltage?As far as I know, yes.
All the 9000x series PS2s I've ever seen have had multi-voltage PSUs.

As far as I know, yes.
All the 9000x series PS2s I've ever seen have had multi-voltage PSUs.
I downloaded the Japanese manual for the 9000x series when it was released and it says 100V, 50Hz/60Hz which I found rather odd considering Japanese/Americans run on 110V/60 Hz, while Australia runs on 240V/50Hz.
I know for fact the 7000x series are multi-voltage, you can read the voltages on the power brick but still at a loss to verify the 9000x series.
Posts moved to the PS2 owners thread.

9000x series model is out.
Time to hunt down a 7900x model.
Anyone know where I can score the cheapest PS2 (slim)?
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Ps2 hardware series' and I've read most of this thread, but I have a couple of questions :)
How often does sony release new series models? like what was the time frame between the release of the 9000x and the 7900x?
also how can you tell what series the console is when you buy it, is it written on the box?
and how many more updates/re-releases do you reckon we'll see before they stop making the console?
Thanks!
^_^
Edit: Laammeee I lost all my post counts from back in the day >_< haha

It's at Sony's discretion. They release upgrades of current series of models, eg 70002, 75002, 77002, 79002.

I think the 9000x series PS2 could be the last series. There may be just one new series model upgrade left, but this might not happen unless Sony re-establishes proper backward compatibility for PS2 games on the PS3. That's my opinion.

Usually a difference of 1 between model numbers indicates regional variations. For example, my PAL PS2 is an SCPH-50002 and my Asian PS2 is an SCPH-50006.
The PS2 has had fifteen revisions, but there are essentially five major versions:
SCPH-1xxxx - Original release PS2. Never released outside of Japan.
SCPH-3xxxx - First revision outside of Japan. Added the expansion bay and built-in DVD player.
SCPH-5xxxx - Most significant revision of the original design. Eliminated the Firewire port, integrated the IR receiver. Internal hardware changes allowed for a cooler, quieter and more reliable system.
SCPH-7xxxx - Original slimline release.
SCPH-9xxxx - New slimline release.
If you ever come across a PS2 where the model number starts with DTLH instead of SCPH then you have a debug model. Most of the time, they have the word "TEST" printed on the side where "PS2" is normally printed, however I've seen some DTLH models that just have PS2 printed there. There are DTLH models in at least the 30000, 50000 and 70000 (slimline) range.
There's also my personal favourite PS2 model, identifiable by the word "TOOL" printed on the side.

thanks for the info!
What are the odds of us getting the red ps2 do you reckon? lol

dam japanese market gets all the cool stuff =(
I'm a fighter fan, and it should be apparent to anyone that PS2 was the console of choice, asside from Smash Bros.
When the PS3 was announced I was more annoyed that the console controllers weren't backward compatible than the games. I and quite a few others like to use arcade sticks at the Couch Warriors events that we attend. That and I didn't give a crap about HD and Blue ray, so it seemed a waste of money.
That was when it was released, now my circumstances have changed and my money situation is a lot better. The choices for next gen fighters is pretty much just PS3 unless you like to play on Live (meh).
PS3 will eventually get VF5 redux for the newer version, and all of the other fighters coming up... Street Fighter 4, Soul Cal 4, Tekken 6... and I know that Capcom vs Tats and Blazblue will eventually come out for it as well, at least for import.
Which leads me to things that I really like about PS3 which has turned me around quite a lot. First and best is region free. I will be importing all my games from overseas for obvious reasons, and this allows me to bypass all kinds of dodgy chips and boot discs. Also the power supply takes a standard PC power cable which is a simple but nice touch. Added to that, the USB cables that come with the controllers make hot swapping controllers between consoles easy, which is something essential for the events that we run (BYO controller), and there are a couple of lagless adapters out there for PS2 so thankfully our expensive arcade sticks can be run after all. :D
Initially I was worried that the price point and the lack of success for the PS3 would result in us needing all types of consoles to satisfy people, but the PS3 is shaping up to suit nicely.

While you're on the topic, which adapters would you suggest? I've got a couple of HRAPs I'd rather keep in service than cough up for shiny new HRAP3s.
You're gonna have to import them, because all the adapters out here are nonsense.
The standard for ages were Pelican adapters. They cost about $20US and were sweet, but I'm lucky to have grabbed a few while I was over in the states. They are quite rare now and can sell for a large amount on ebay.
The other is a Korean brand called REAL, which are fairly cheap, but not easily accessable from memory.
There is a really good thread on converters on shoryuken.com in the tech forum. I'd link it but it's blocked here at work lol.

My launch PS2 is starting to pack up. It's modded, and it boots up my import NTSC-U and NTSC-J games pretty reliably but really struggles with the PAL games.
Long story short, I'm thinking of buying a new slim PS2 as its long term PAL successor.
What I want to know is: Is there anything that about them that makes slims inferior? I guess I just need to confirm that I can use the component cable from my Phat in the slim, and that the slims can play PS1 games. I'm pretty sure the answer is yes to both, but I just want to make sure.

The only difference between the 70000 series and the 90000 series is the power brick is external for the 70000 series and internal for the 90000 series.

All signs point to Yes.
