So apparently to boot into a 64-bit kernel you have to hold the keys '6' & '4' during boot.

Apparently the system will automatically boot into the 64-bit kernel if you meet certain requirements.
I think the bigger worry is Apple's sudden change of attitude towards ZFS. I was really looking forward to reformatting my HDD and going with ZFS.
Apple really needs to move on this, as HFS+ needs to be killed as soon as possible.

I ****ing HATE Mail 4.0 in SL. The bullshit app doesn't let you choose what mail service you want to use, so now i'm stuck with that GMAIL IMAP shit when all I want is a simple POP account.
"But it syncs with the Gmail server so every device that uses it works harmoniously"... Like SHIT it does.
"And you can also use smart mailboxes if you want to keep things sorted", do I hear you say? Well in theory that's fine, but why the **** does it leave a copy in my Inbox as well as on the 'All Mail' Gmail IMAP so my 'smart' mailbox now looks like a doppleganger's wet dream!?
Frustrating shit.
***EDIT***
Oh look, the e-mail has been sent and i've received a response from my friend showing that they've received it... so then why the **** is it sitting in the drafts folder?!

I like the 3D dock...
I use the dock in auto-hide mode, and the sliding up animation is quite jarring when the dock is being displayed in 3D (it should actually fly in from the front of the screen, rather than just slide up).
So yeah, I'd actually prefer it if it were animated like a 3D dock.
To be honest, I kind of fall into the Jon Siracusa camp when it comes to the Dock. It's a usability mess.
Oh look, the e-mail has been sent and i've received a response from my friend showing that they've received it... so then why the **** is it sitting in the drafts folder?!
To be fair, this same bug is in the older version of Mail.app as well. I get it all the time.
I haven't really had your other problem though. I have two accounts set up in Mail.app just fine.
In unrelated news, I had a really weird UI death in Snow Leopard today. At some point, it stopped switching applications (it would beep when I pressed command-tab, and switching via the Dock or by clicking a background window didn't work either). When I attempted to quit Safari, the entire menu bar disappeared.
While I certainly could have shelled in and restarted the UI process, it was easier to hard reboot it. When it came back up, Spotlight re-indexed the HDD.
Has anyone else had a UI death in Snow Leopard yet? It's the first time I've had one on Mac OS X since Jaguar.

Theres a thing called Optibay (I think) where you can convert your DVD drive into a space for an extra hard drive.
Or you could buy a 500gb 2.5" Hard Drive and replace it, and buy an external case for your 250GB one.

All laptops should have removable bottom covers like that. It's one of those "why didn't someone think of this ten years ago?" ideas.
Even the old way of upgrading a MacBook HDD is easier than doing it on an iBook, though.
I was more wondering which brand and size of HDD I should purchase, and how much I should be paying. I'm assuming I can't go any better than 500GB 7200rpm? And Western Digital are meant to be good?

Probably one thing you won't realise straight away is that closing a window doesn't necessarily close the program like in Windows. You usually have to quit the program too from the bar across the top (or using a shortcut).
basic useful short cuts:
command+m - minimize
command+w - close window
command+q - quit
command+space - spotlight (think vista/win7 search bar)

I'm thinking of buying another 2GB of DDR3 memory for my 2.66ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac, which already has 2GB (2x1GB) of RAM.
Is it as simple as just buying a 2GB hunk of RAM and installing it in one of the spare sockets, and the machine will detect it once I turn it on? Or is there anything I should know before doing so (ie. will the new memory be compatible with the existing memory, or some such)? I'm new to Macs, that's why I ask.
Cheers,
I think you can just chuck it in, but I'm not sure. Definitely a good idea, though. It'll net you a nice performance boost.
While we're on that, I've got a MacBook Pro that's a couple of years old now. It came with 4GB RAM, and that's plenty, really, but is it possible for me to chuck any more in there? I assume it's got two slots with 2GB each, so it's full, but I may as well ask.

Officially, the maximum supported memory for the late 2007/early 2008 MBPs is 4Gb (2 x 2Gb). Unofficially, 6Gb of RAM is apparently possible (http://www.barefeats.com/mbpp11.html) (1 x 2Gb + 1 x 4Gb), but 8Gb (2 x 4Gb) seems to slow the system to a crawl. So you can do it, but the benchmarks don't seem to demonstrate much improvement.

I've got the early 2009 20" model. It's got DDR3 inside, but without opening it up as yet, I'm pretty sure it does only have 2 slots (I'll have to check tomorrow). I guess that means I'll have to buy a 4GB hunk o' RAM, turf one of the existing 1GB sticks and end up with 5GB of RAM. Does that sound right?

Quick, kinda long question.
I work in an advertising agency, everything is on mac, if I pursue the industry I imagine I'll always be working on mac.
I'm buying a new laptop, partly for work partly for pleasure.
In terms of using editing and graphics software for work am I better off buying a cheap mac or investing in a PC with a good processor and graphics card?
Outside of work I'll probably only use it for the internet, not games.
What are compatibility issues these days?
Is mac still the best for editing and graphics?
Using it for fun am I likely to run into any nasty surprises coming from a PC background?
Do I need to stop being a tight ass and splash out a little more?

The only issue I can immediately recall when working cross platform is that Windows fonts won't work on a Mac and vice verse.
Its really only a problem is they package an InDesign project and they use fonts you don't have.
Apart from that, each platform is pretty even; though I find everything works a lot more smoothly in the OS environment. That said a cheap Mac will show its limitations when it comes to design and editing. You'll need grunt to push many pixels, and in that respect its more cost effective to get a Windows PC.

Aside from announcing some new... phone... thingy, Apple also remembered that they sell real computers as well, and announced Safari 5. (http://www.apple.com/safari/)
Fun things to note:
— Still no "remember tabs when restarting" feature. You still have to use the "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" menu item by hand.
— "Safari Reader". Apparently going to kill journalism. The sooner the better, really.
— Fast. Safari's already basically the fastest browser around, and Safari 5 is noticeably faster in the short time I've been using it.
— New extensions API. Taking a leaf out of Firefox's book, Safari now has an actual extensions API, rather than the dodgy one we've all been taking advantage of for years.
— Return of the progress-URL-bar. The nebulous "Loading" indicator is gone, replaced with the old progress-bar-in-URL-bar.
— Faster Javascript, apparently.
— Comprehensive HTML5 support. Given that Apple hates Flash, it's no surprise that they're jumping fully onto the HTML5-will-kill-Flash bandwagon.
— Optional extra search engines. You can choose between Google, Bing and Yahoo for search. No idea why you would, of course. I'd prefer to see search plugin support.
— Firefox-style URL bar.
I'm sure there's like a billion other features that I can't see yet.

The new Apple TV is nicely priced at $129... however, its tech specs leave a lot to be desired. This has to compete with popular media players like Western Digital's WD TV Live HD, after all.
Apple TV supported formats:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats. It won't be able to play MKVs without hacking it.
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5Mbps, 640x480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
Just looking at MPEG-4 video, it only supports resolutions less than 640 pixels wide. And it only supports the AAC stereo audio format. Most movie rips have 5.1 AC3.
Clearly it's still very much designed for content purchased through iTunes.

Pai Mel

The CPU in the Apple TV would not be very powerful. The High Profile features of H264 would need a lot of processing power to decode. If it can't even handle 5.1 audio then...
If you really must go Apple then Mac Mini would be better. Otherwise WD TV Live HD is still my preference.

Hey guys. i've just ordered a macbook.
Its my first mac so i've got a few questions!
I'm pretty keen to have windows available. Bootcamp sounds like the best option but having virtualisation software is also appealing. Is it ok to use both? Can you use the same copy of windows 7 to install to bootcamp AND a virtualisation software? Parallels or Fusion?
Does anyone sell OEM copies of office for mac? Is it worth having office over iwork assuming i want to integrate with PC's?
Thanks for any input.

Out of interest, why do you want/need Windows on your Mac? Professional reasons, or for familiarity?
I can't help you with the BootCamp stuff, I'm all about the OSX, but I can offer assistance with Office. I've got two spare licenses (that I probably won't use) on my copy. I could send it to you, you install it with one of the licenses, you send it back to me. We've dealt via the HAH a couple of times, so it's no biggie for me.
EDIT: I assume this is above board. I've never read the license fine print.

Upgraded mum's iMac's internal hard drive to a 1TB WD GP drive yesterday. Was pretty nerve-wracking taking off the glass, and then the LCD, just to access the hard drive. Hardest part was finding the cables that connected the LCD to the mobo. Managed to find it only when I tried to lift the LCD up.
When I put it all together, it was a painful wait waiting for the iMac to boot up. It took longer than usual. Did I put it all together correctly? Luckily the operation was a success.
It's actually pretty easy to do. You just have to be careful you don't drop the glass or LCD. They would be expensive to replace.

I would like to take time to state how utterly and completely in love with my MacBook Pro I am... I haven't been so devoted and affectionate towards a piece of technology since I was 11 years old and I obtained my first Playstation.
When I look across a crowded room at it's sleek silver body, it's crisp display and glowing apple I know deep in my heart that I made the right choice. It is a thing of immense beauty.
And not just of beauty but also substance, I love the way everything melds seamlessly together to create an enjoyable computing experience every time I boot it up. From loading up the initial desktop and dock menu in a matter of seconds to flipping in and out of programs which because they don't shut down when you exit them appear immediately when called upon.
I love the intuitive feel of the track pad and the button that with one push displays all your currant operating software.
I love the way everything just works. The way when you connect your iphone to itunes it automatically syncs your information, how iphoto can be used in conjunction with facebook, how mail works with your gmail account.
I'll admit I probably didn't need the pro model and I'll probably never use half of the things this fine piece of technology is capable of. I know Apple can be a dictatorship when it comes to control of their content and that I could probably have bought the same parts in a PC computer for much cheaper. But I don't care.
I love my Macbook Pro, it's a fantastic Notebook and I enjoy it every time I operate it.
I made the right choice... :)

I have a licence for Photoshop but if I were without that program, this is how I would do it:
1. Assign a shortcut key for screen-capture in /System Preferences/Keyboard. I use F6 to call up the "Copy picture of selected area to the clipboard".
2. Open up the photos you want to use in Preview, Finder or Safari and resize them to the exact size you want.
3. Screen-capture each photo and paste into a TextEdit window and arrange into a comic strip.
4. Finally take another screen-capture of the finished TextEdit design and paste into the Preview app using File Menu/New from Clipboard, and save as jpeg.
See, that wasn't hard.

App store is pretty great, but there's one flaw: No 'universal' apps that run on Mac/iPhone and iPad. If you want the iOS version of Mac app (or vice versa) you need to buy it again.
I'm glad they didn't just slap this into iTunes, though. Having a separate app works well. Now, if only they'd finally decouple iDevice syncing and the iOS app store from iTunes as well.
EDIT: In fact, I just remembered, Apple already has a perfectly good standalone program for syncing to devices. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isync) Hell, it's the underlying framework that iTunes uses to sync with iOS devices.

I don't know what the advantages would be but I just expected an internet juggernaut like facebook with all the money and resources in the world to release an app on day one. I assumed they would want to expand their accessibility and availability through Apple's new app-store. The iphone and ipad app-store has proven to be phenomenally successful in promoting portable social networking in the past. So new MacBook Pros have been announced.
Good to see the i7 processors as standard now but the big question is, AMD graphics yay or nay?
It seems to be a pretty minor update over the last models, slightly updated processor, more RAM, HD camera and new inputs but certainly not ground-breaking. As far as I can tell the design aesthetic has more or less remained the same. They haven't gone the iphone route and hardened up the edges and removed some of the curves.

The big news is the new "thunberbolt" interconnect. Ars Technica has a good explanation of what it is. (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/02/thunderbolt-smokes-usb-firewire-with-10gbps-throughput.ars)
The other major thing is that the 15" and 17" models finally get proper quad-core CPUs, not dual-core CPUs with useless bits of silicon attached like my MBP. On the other hand, they chose to go with Radeons, which is pretty much a dealbreaker for me. Otherwise I'd seriously consider trading up from my 15" MBP to one of these.
Also, apparently the 13" model doesn't offer a 1440x900 screen option.
Apple are also previewing Lion (http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/), which is due mid-year.
The radeons are a dealbreaker? Why?

The problem I have is that the CPUs in the new models are the CPUs we should have got last year, but Intel chose to put a useless hunk of silicon on the same die where the two other CPU cores should go.
Do the ATI cards in the new ones support CUDA/OpenCL? I thought that was an NVidia only thing, so I was surprised when Apple went with ATI for the new cards because they seemed to be pushing the whole CUDA/OpenCL thing pretty heavily.
Pauly
02-03-2011, 02:23 PM
That stuff is a bit too technical for me but there is a lot of criticism with the new graphics cards, particularly on the 13" models which are worse than last year. I think I'll wait for next years model. Should be able to squeeze one more year out of this old thing.

Not asking for the best. Just a bit better. Need it for some high end graphics/video editing and sc2 of course! Plus I'm semi hoping that they up the resolution of the 13" models. Meh, soon enough there will be ebay merchants selling hard drive replacement kits for 1/4 the price Apple is charging.

That seems like a bit of a dick move on Apple's part. I guess the iMac is already full of laptop parts packed together like a Rube Goldberg puzzle but chucking three more pins on the HDD connector is just excessive. I can live with Apple selling standardised upgrades at a markup, but not if the Apple parts are the only ones that'll work.

I opened my MacBook Pro to discover a crack in the center of the screen, about 1cm wide… A quick phonecall and it seems to replace the glass will cost $350 from a non-apple repairer.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a cheaper option?

Ooh, I hope you find a cheap option. I've found even authorised Apple service centres charge labour even if the part is still covered under warranty.

I'm thinking about getting the 21.5" iMac soon (within the week) but I'm not overaly convinced about making the switch. I have an iPhone and iPad and would like an Apple PC just to integrate my devices into one brand. I also don't really game on the PC so that wouldn't be a downside.
I love the display of the iMac, it's a beautiful monitor and OS X is intriguing. As a Windows user all my life the fact that the iMac is different is appealing. The other thing is the majority of my Windows PC isn't exactly, lets say, real, so having official licences etc for everything would be nice.
Also I had some issue with the PC not booting earlier in May but with a little cleaning it [I]seems[/] to have fixed it, but the HDDs make noises when it boots still (not that failing HDDs are hard to replace).
Overall I do want an iMac, but as I'd need Appke finance (which I'm approved for) to get it I'm still not sure.

OS X Lion is out now via the App Store. Grrrr, I can't get it yet due to internet cap. I'll have to wait one day more. Interestingly, after you have upgraded to Lion, you can upgrade to OS X Lion Server edition for only $51.99.
Also I noticed on the Apple Store there are new MacBook Airs with i5/i7 and updated Mac Minis.
Also good to note for those into multimedia authoring. Apple's Compressor app is now available to buy separately via the App Store for $51.99. This is currently the cheapest legal way to get a Dolby Digital audio professional encoder. Those on Windows PCs usually have to pay hundreds for a similar third-party Dolby Digital encoder.

Considering you can load Windows onto a Mac, he kinda already is.
Also, for those of you considering upgrading to Lion, here's a compatibility table (http://roaringapps.com/apps:table) for checking which apps will work in Lion. VLC, for instance, has some problems but I'd expect them to get onto that quickly.

Just install Perian plug-in and you won't need VLC anymore.
I have upgraded to Lion now. Not really that much changes. I wouldn't consider it an essential upgrade from Snow Leopard.
Our iMac has also crashed three times since I upgraded:
Once when I was rapidly two-finger swiping in and out of Dashboard.
Once in Photobooth while watching a video. My iGlasses video plug-in currently does not work in Lion, don't know if that had anything to do with it.
And once while using GarageBand, but I had just installed a MIDI driver.
If you really want to upgrade I think you can use iTunes gift cards to purchase from the App store, so if you purchased some of those cards in a special deal recently, then you can upgrade to Lion cheaper.
These days my preferences are the PC platform. I have even purchased Adobe CS5 Suite and Sonar X1 for Windows to confirm my commitment to PC.
I'm just getting less confident in the reliability of Apple products. e.g. in the last two Apple computers we had, the internal hard drive died within 9 months, and I have had very serious compatibility issues with their Firewire ports. The hard drives were user-replaceable on these machines, though a bit scary on the iMac, but the latest iMac models uses hard drives with proprietary SATA connectors.
If I were getting a Mac today, I'd get the Mac Mini with a nice 24" display. I find the 21" a bit small for photo editing, but may be fine for you. It's also a pain that the USB and other ports are on the back. You have to spin the thing around to plug things in.
I have the bare bones, entry level 11" MacBook Air arriving on my door step any moment. After thoroughly thinking what I want the computer for- couch computing, presentations, e-mail, word processing, portaility. I convinced myself 2GB RAM is plenty. when paired with the i5 and the SSD do people think this will give me faithful companionship for the next few years? I can't see RAM being an issue but I'm going over it in my head in circles.

For what you've listed the combination of the i5 and the SSD should be plenty with 2gb.
The speed of the SSD alone is well worth it. Add in the i5 and for general computing needs and web browsing you won't notice it being any slower than say the i7 pro.
I'm tossing up between the 11' 4gb 128gb or the 13' base model. Kinda think the 11' woul be fine screen size, and also a little bit more portable, but the only big thing that's swaying towards the 13 is battery life. Otherwise the specs are almost identical.
Also wanna say I'm hella jealous your getting one. Id love to have one right now but I won't have the money for a couple more weeks. (just had to quit my job because uni is back on so funds are tight. sucks balls)

I handed over my $31.99 and upgraded to Lion OS X over the weekend.
So far so good. The immediately noticeable differences are minor but significant.
You can now zoom by pinching, show all open windows with a swipe and switch between apps with a flick. These new gestures replace a number of buttons they were previously found at the top of the keyboard and being able to do all of this now without leaving the touchpad is great. It makes the interface feel more organic and reaching over the keyboard to hit a button feels practically analogue by comparison.
Launch Control makes accessing apps which are normally stored away in folders much quicker and easier. That said the gesture to open Launch Control is quite awkward, it consists of pinching together three fingers and your thumb, more than a couple of times the gesture has either not registered or been mistaken for something else.
FaceTime is now included, which is a great app and the option of making video calls with my MacBook is exciting. At the moment though I don't have any friends or family using this app, so it's basically unusable.
The addition of a full screen option to some apps is good but to me not very useful as the apps that take advantage of this, Photobooth for example, I use rarely.
VLC Media Player is not supported right now but I'd say it won't be long until a Lion compatible version is created. From what I've read there are quite a few 3rd party apps that will not function until updates have been made available.
As of my limited time with Lion my verdict is that it's a nice update with some very cool new features. It's all very slick and smooth but like any new tech we're going to have to wait until support starts to grow and we can take advantage of all it's features.
It's not an essential update but it is a worthwhile one. if you have $32 to spend it's worth it but if you're on a budget and/or don't mind waiting until support is larger I wouldn't rush out and buy it.

Best improvement I have found so far with Lion is being able to resize a window from any edge, like you can on PCs. Prior to Lion you could only drag the bottom-right corner in order to resize it.
nintendo

I didn't even realize you couldn't resize from any where else. I always just use te bottom right even if I'm using windows.
EDIT: also heading down to pick up a 13" Air.

Apparently, buggy nVidia drivers in Lion are causing graphics problems (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/08/buggy-nvidia-drivers-giving-2010-macbook-pro-owners-lion-upgrade-headaches.ars) for MacBook Pro 2010 owners. Guess I won't be upgrading just yet.

Okay so here is what the last few hours have entailed:
Setting up the new Mac and OSX Lion. Then I copied all my music from my external drive to the Mac and put it into iTunes. After doing that I noticed that not everything was there, the reason being that iTunes Mac doesn't auto convert WMA files like Windows iTunes does. So I downloaded a program that converts them and I am currently in the process of doing so.
The other issue I've encountered is syncing my iPad and iPhone with a new library. I am scared that I will lose all the data on my devices if I do it, but I clearly need to be able to sync with the new library. So I am currently downloading every app that I use on my iPad/iPhone through iTunes (90+) and will then bite the bullet and sync.

Hey, not a good idea converting from WMA to MP3 as you will lose quality. You are recompressing an already compressed audio file.
Best to install a codec that will allow playback of WMA. You can try installing the perian plugin.
http://perian.org/#detail
I'm not sure if that will allow iTunes to accept WMA files into its library, but I think you should be able to play the WMA files from Finder or other apps once Perian is installed.
I don't have any experience with iPhone or iPad so you are on your own with that one.

Did you actually export your library, or just copy it all? Because iirc if you export it, then I'm fairly sure all your iPhone/iPad data is also exported.

The problem with copying my iTunes file is that my PC died last night which is why I bought the Mac. Also it still wouldn't help my issue with the WMA files.

loved this quote from the Gizmodo article on Cook;
Oh, he’s gay? Well, let’s just go nuts with that then.
“Cook’s title is Chief Gay Officer at Apple. His real job is de facto gay, overseeing day-to-day gayness during titular CEO Steve Jobs’ indefinite medical leave. Of course, Jobs retains both his title, non-gayness and power, and is expected to make his heavy, heterosexual influence felt remotely.”
“Cook grew up gay in Robertsdale, Alabama, the son of a retired shipyard worker. He earned a Bachelor’s degree, while gay, in industrial engineering from Auburn University in 1982 and an MBA from Duke University in 1988. Before Apple, he did a gay stint at a computer reseller called Intelligent Electronics, worked (again, while gay) in PC logistics for 12 years at IBM, and spent six gay months as VP for Corporate Materials at Compaq. He joined Apple in 1998 as senior gay vice president of operations, overseeing gay computer manufacturing. Cook was later promoted to gay chief of worldwide gayness and of the Macintosh division.”
