Is it worth it? Like are you finding any major benefits from having done it, aside from the getting files part?
Ive always thought about doing it but never had the nerve to actually do it. I guess I dont really have anything to complain about with the way it is, so that unless there are any real major benefits, I really couldnt be bothered.

Plenty of people in this thread have said it's worthwhile.
So with the new beta firmware introducing finger swipes to access the multitasking bar and a five finger pinch to return to the home screen there's rumours that the next iphone (or the one after it I guess) might go Home button free.
Also it looks like they're including an option in the settings to turn your iphone into a wireless hotspot. My-Wi better up their game!

Fixed. :p
I used to jailbreak, but stopped when I realised I simply wasn't using any features it enabled.

5 icon dock, springboard settings and the easier maintenance of my music made it worthwhile for me.

I can see why they left it out.
By being so minimalistic about physical buttons, Apple have no choice but to resort to complicated and stupid-looking ways to do very basic actions on the iPhones.
Sidenote: criticise Nokia for being a bit behind on hardware development now, but back when mobile phones really boomed in Australia (early 2000s) every single dealer had Nokia handsets, and stock to spare. Cut to 2011, Apple are the market leader but you can't find their handset in a single mobile phone store. There's no choice but to go to their store and buy a handset outright - a move which is unviable for a large percentage of mobile phone users. (I don't even want one, ftr, I'm hanging for the dual-core handsets in feb/march but my fiance likes using the iPhone and stupidly, we can't just get one when renewing her Optus contract).
Reminds me very much of that webcomic that spoofed the PS3 and Wii sales models.

While I'll agree that stocks had been scarce for an almost ludicrously long time following the launch, recent supply has been plentiful and I've almost never seen anyone not be able to just walk in and get an iPhone, at least where I work. You do have to buy directly from Apple if you want an iPhone that's not carrier-locked, but not being able to find a handset in "a single mobile phone store" is a bit farfetched.

In TAT's world precious metals vital to electronics like mobile phones are abundant and not incredibly rare.

This has probably been said already, but where would the cheapest place be to buy iphones outright? My wife is jumping on the bandwagon (and wouldn't mind a 3gs if it meant getting it cheaper).
We've looked at ebay and some prices seem to hover around the $300 - $400 mark, but I just can't bring myself to trust them....

I'll agree that it doesn't look too good in that video, but who hasn't seen those videos where they show of typing on the iPhone and they seem to be half ****ing retarded. I get the same feeling with this video.
That said, you should check out the video of those multiple fi ger gestures on the iPad, (think gizmodo had it), because that's where they really shine. I wouldn't be suprised to see them show up for the next iPad and not for the iPhone.

Only just found this out, so Ill share it incase someone else didnt know either, but Optus removed the charge for tethering ages ago apparently. They removed it because it customers were complaining that it was stupid to pay $20 a month for something that Vodafone and Telstra were offering for free.

Yeah not over wifi yet, but in 4.3, (which comes out this month iirc), allows tethering via wifi for up to 4 devices. So youll only really have to wait until then.
EDIT:
Im also loving this. Now I have a use for my macbook that has sat idle for a year and a half whilst I havent had net at my place. It was never a problem before because I prefer using my iPad to browse, but now that Ive given that to my dad in preparation for the iPad 2, I find I wanna use the macbook instead of my iphone.
Although I still use my iPhone a shit load when Im out and about.

Once home sharing is turned on, both on iTunes and your phone, go into your phone's iPod app and under the 'More' tab, shared accounts will appear at the bottom. Takes about a minute to appear after you've turned on your phone's home sharing feature.

White one released yesterday at my Optus store. Didn't even know we were getting it until my manager messaged me an hour before open to tell us to be ready for it.
It looks pretty tacky. Also makes the screen look pretty dim. Though as much as I hate Apple, I have to give them credit for being smart enough to purposefully delay the white version (yeah sure, it takes 9 months to get the bloody colour right) to convince the idiots I serve every day asking when the iPhone 5 is coming out (I DON'T ****ING KNOW!) to upgrade early. The Woolworths app is pretty good too, if you like shopping. Ability to scan the barcode of a product at home, add it to a shopping list and have it tell you what isle it is located in at your local store is double plus good.

I wouldn't mind upgrading from my currant iphone 4 and may do so provided the price point isn't too heinous.
Has anyone had experience with upgrading whilst still under a Vodaphone contract? I'm a year into a standard two year contract, $69 plan, paying $10 a month extra for a 32GB iphone 4.
I would be willing to pay $200 to upgrade, either in a lump sum or more likely over a monthly period. Am I dreaming?
nintendo
05-10-2011, 03:19 PM
I've upgraded each time. You'll be looking at around $400 though. On a $69 contract they'll probably offer you either a 30 or a 40% discount so the best way to gauge what youl pay is to work out what you'd owe and minus the %.
Higher plan higher the discount. Although, seeing as its been over a year since the 4 came out, I'm not sure if they'll change that or not. Hoping because I'm ok a $79 cap I'll get 50%. I know they offered 50% last time to people on 79$ caps and above

Thanks for the info dude.
A little calculator work and it looks like I'd be expecting a price of $579 at 30% or $496 at 40%.
That's way too much either way but a quick check of ebay reveals that I could sell my existing iphone 4 for $500 or more which would bring the upgrade price to a very acceptable $79 or less.

Italian Stallion

Can't believe how underwhelming the new iPhone is. I don't even like them and I still expected them to put on a good show.. after 16 months I expected new features, not just updates. The only redeeming announcement was voice recognition, which looks exactly the same as Vlingo... and has been available forever, and bundled with the Galaxy S II for the past 6 months. So much for innovation. No wonder Apple are suing everyone lately - can't keep up, so they'll just have them banned.
Also funny how Siri is being excluded from phones other than the 4S. And they're turning off the servers that handle the voice recognition from the current Siri app on the iphone. Nope.. Apple don't dick their customers at all.
Shorty
05-10-2011, 09:23 PM
I thought the reason they made Siri exclusive to the 4S was because it was processor-intensive.
Italian Stallion
05-10-2011, 09:33 PM
Maybe it does. But I know the current Siri app on the iphone relayed it through remote servers, hence requiring an internet connection to use. Even if that's the case, there's no reason to pull the capability from current iphones other than to give more "incentive" to upgrade.
Shorty
05-10-2011, 09:38 PM
Except for the angry support calls you'll get if you try to implement it on release hardware and everyone's battery life nosedives. If someone manages to hack it onto a 4 and get it running without chopping off 30 or so percent of their battery life, you may have a point. But CPU usage isn't free.
Italian Stallion
05-10-2011, 09:48 PM
I understand not giving backwards compatibility it if it does require a dualcore CPU, but there's no proof either way yet as to whether it's done locally or on a remote server. What I'm saying is there's no reason the current Siri iphone app - which has been available for roughly a year - and works on current iphones, couldn't co-exist with the 4S' implementation of it, other than to make people upgrade for features that were otherwise already available.
Shorty
05-10-2011, 10:02 PM
Well, that may be partly to eliminate confusion (and don't ever underestimate the ability of non-technical users to get confused by things) between the third-party version and the "native" version, particularly if they've extended and enhanced the 4S version. But even I have to admit that the upgrade incentive theory can't be at least part of it.

Only thing the iPhone 4S has up its sleeve is the GPU, anandtech's benchmarks (http://www.anandtech.com/show/4216/apple-ipad-2-gpu-performance-explored-powervr-sgx543mp2-benchmarked/2) showed it shat on the Tegra 2, which the Samsung GS2 doesn't even have (http://www.anandtech.com/show/4177/samsungs-galaxy-s-ii-preliminary-performance-mali400-benchmarked).
Personally though that's not a deciding factor, for me it's a phone first. Infinity Blade is nice and all but most successful mobile games don't require a lot of grunt.

How is it a bad idea? If it can be properly realized it'd be amazing.

Thats basically my point, how will you properly realise it on a device like the iPhone. It will either be too dumbed down to compensate for the touch interface or overly complicated and unwieldy because of what a proper elder scrolls game contains
Didn't say it was a bad idea though.

So why do the Optus cap plans all have a price on video calling? The iPhone can't even do video calls.
Also, wtf is with the $79 cap changing so that MMS costs 0.50c now instead of being unlimited. Shit sux.
Gonna see how much it'll cost to break my contract, not upgrade, if Telstra comes out with some plans that are halfway decent. Its been longer than a year now so it might be cheap enough for me to do.
Does anyone remember what Telstra was offering people who upgrade their iPhones? Just curious because next year Id be looking at doing that.

Cards is a really smart idea and I expect them to make MILLIONS OF DOLLARS from lazy people like myself. I also expect sending a card from this service will be seen as a douchy thing to do in about 2 years or so once Apple have destroyed the card business and everyone is using it.

All this iCloud stuff is pretty neato. I just hope that my 3GB data limit is going to be enough. I have no idea how much Im going to be using when you combine all the updating, backups, and all that extra stuff it can do.
I like the idea of having it all sync across my iPad, iPhone, and Air
Does anyone know if OTA updates from now on count towards your data limit? DO they come over the 3G connection or do you need wifi?

Wow. All this data usage is gonna be hard for Australia. If I have to back up 32gb, and 64gb, each time I want to backup my phone, then Ill be over my data limit in no time.
As it is with 5gb free I can only see myself keeping contacts, reminders and calendar backed up.

Not if it's a differential backup, which wouldn't require syncing the entire contents each time.

That makes sense then. Because Ive got like 4 different backups on my laptop from each time I backup my phone, but as long as it just edits what it needs to backup then thats fine.

Assuming all your music is bought from itunes it will just recognise that you own it and let you download it from their severs if need be. Same with apps. All it would back up would be your user settings and docs etc (photos I guess).
I think you can upload ripped mp3 tracks if you pay for extra space? And that's assuming they don't match the file to a previous upload, and just use that one.

I'm pretty impressed with the camera on the 4s. I took some outdoor photos and shot some videos today, and the results were noticeably better than those from my 12MP Lumix.
Extremely crisp output for a mobile phone camera.

Evidently not!
Also, seems like someone's managed to fully port Siri to the iphone 4 (http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/29/siri-hacked-to-fully-run-on-the-iphone-4-and-ipod-touch-iphone-4s-vs-iphone-4-siri-showdown-video-interview/). Apparently the only thing holding previous ports back were the server not recognising it as a 4S, and hence blocking access. Using files from the 4S they've bypassed that. I guess that means the recognition is done server side. And that it was only blocked from the 4 in order to get people to upgrade, after all. Bit of a dick move by Apple.

Also, I have a 3G to sell. What's possible to do with them now? I think iOS 5 can't even be put on it. I'm not sure Apple really support it properly anymore.

I'm fairly sure Apple updates no longer support the iphone 3G and 3GS. I've heard the best way to keep a 3G going is to downgrade it to it's original software. It'll be much smoother and faster when it's not trying to run newer updates that it can't handle.

You can delete the words by stuffing your fat **** right in its quivering **** and ****ing it hard until its sim card pops out the top of it.
Then just rinse the sim card under a tap and pop it back in, the filth should be gone.
