So Optus want me to pay $420 to upgrade to the new phone, but start a new contract. Didn't really want to start a new contract, see what I can fenagle from them, otherwise may just buy it outright from Apple.
iPod touch becomes iPhone using Yosion's Apple Peel 520? (http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/28/ipod-touch-turned-into-a-phone-using-yosions-apple-peel-520/)

Mine is 482.50, which is 50% off. It's actually about $100 cheaper than last time so vie got no complaints about that. Last time I got 40% off, but I also got $10 off the cost of my plan for the length of my contract.
I'm not sure if that's because the guy who served me was a mad dog, he was out the night before working in a club. I saw him out and then proceeded to the optus store to wait 4 freaking hours to be served by him again, or if it was a bonus for upgrading or something.
Actually, could anyone shed some light on that? Was it because he was a mad dog or because I was upgrading?

Assuming Virgin get the same plans as Optus, I'll be getting the $59 one.
Yeah let me know how that goes I'm with Virgin t...
So it turns out Virgin are useless (no plan info, and no idea when they will get it). Might switch to Optus.
Ok, let me know how that goes. I wouldn't mind knocking 15 dollars off what I'm currently paying for my 3G.
In other news: The Colbert Report’s The Word app currently free (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-colbert-reports-the-word/id332610545?mt=8).

You need to DL the app from apple and get the bumper sent out.

I thought the app method was only for the initial launch countries and that the rest of the world would be getting bumpers thrown in automatically.

But if they did that, they wouldn't get the sales from the people that don't realise they can get it for free.

I think Cubby means that by reimbursing instead of giving the bumper out with the phone, not everyone will get one/ask for their money back, thereby saving Apple some money.

Are Apple stores the only way you can buy them in the US? Or do all stores take your email address when you buy things.
Has anyone seen full covers that protects the back aswell? I just just see the picture sequense above, but with them talking about how lots of people drop them, so they made them out of glass making them break easier.

Just called a couple of Optus shops in the area, 1 said they had "very limited " stock, the other said they would have ~20 of each model. Meh, will just go to my closets one, probably won't have better luck at the others.

I'm the 13th person on the list for a 32gb, and my local store is only getting 10 in. Ffs. Why the **** did they change this shit up all of a sudden without any warning or advertising or anything. Stores I talked to said they started taking orders 2 months ago so I guess I'm still lucky. I'll probably get mine on Wednesday apparently.
But taking orders 2 months ago? Wtf. Seems kinda weird to me if there wasn't even a release date until last week, and the prices weren't even available till Tuesday.

I ordered an iPhone 4 at my Optus store this morning. It turns out that, because I'm so close to the end of my contract, they're waiving any kind of "early contract breakage" fees (apparently this applies to all iPhone 3G customers, so check with your Optus store if you're in this bracket).
Basically what happens, according to the Friendly Optus Employee™ I spoke to, is that, if you pre-order by this morning, you go into a list for the next batch which apparently will arrive next week sometime, and you're guaranteed a phone then. They got 10 in today, and they'd sold out pretty much immediately, so they're taking pre-orders right now.
I went with a 16GB model on Optus' $59 cap, which is $550 calls, unlimited SMS (yay!) and 2GB of data. It's about $3 more than what I pay for my 3G at the moment. Pretty happy, to be honest. Can't wait for it to arrive.
Also got to fondle an iPhone 4 in-store. Plants Vs Zombies runs like a dream on the thing, and that screen... by the gods, that screen. It will blow your mind when you see how crisp and clear it is.
nintendo
30-07-2010, 12:37 PM
That's where I'm a little confused. The store kept telling me that I'm 3rd inline for a 32gb, yet now they tell me that optus, not them, will txt me when I can go in and pick up my phone. They also said that it doesn't matter where I go to get the phone, just when I get my txt go to a store and pick it up.
It all just sounds a little odd to me. Because it seems like the actual store has no control over where I am in line. I could be anywhere. Who knows how optus will distribute them to people on rain checks and such if we can literally go to any store and pick it up.
My two main problems right now are that I don't want to go anywhere else, and I want a guarantee that I will get one on the next batch this store receives.
EDIT: and what's with me signing something to say I agree that I will get one in 2-4 weeks when I've been told for the past 2 days I'm guaranteed one on Wednesday. Just seems like wiggle room for their lack of a distribution method for allocating stores what they need to satisfy their individual demand. It's as if with optus coming in-between the individual franchises and sending out the notifications to customers, any order that the stores have doesn't mean a thing.
StorminNorman
30-07-2010, 12:49 PM
According to the Friendly Optus Employee™ I spoke to, you go into a "national queue", and your name gets attached to an iPhone 4 serial number. They didn't say anything to me about being able to pick it up from "any store" though, so I don't know about that.
In fact, I just checked the piece of paper I got, and it seems to imply that I do have to go to the store I got it from.
Also, because Optus say it can take up to 4 weeks to arrive, I get the first month's bill free, no matter how soon it arrives. I did mine early enough today that it should theoretically arrive next week.

Just seems like wiggle room for their lack of a distribution method for allocating stores what they need to satisfy their individual demand.
Co-worker just got back from a Telstra Shop where he picked up 2 iphone 4s for him and his wife. He said they're already sold out, and they essentially had no control over what quantities they got; it was essentially you take what you get given.
So I'm not surprised with Optus allowing themselves some "wiggle room" given they may have no f***ing idea what stock they'll be getting next.

The app should be up soon as the Apple store in Sydney is telling people that's how they get the free case/bumper.
nintendo
30-07-2010, 02:22 PM
My optus store was giving them away.
I mean that the store is saying I'm a certain place in line, but in actuality, no one knows wtf I am in line. The store has me on a list that puts me 3rd, but with optus being in control, the list I'm on at the store means nothing.
The annoying part is I cannot know where I am. It's impossible.

A general techie smartphone question: I've got a 3GS and it connects to my network at home via WiFi (which runs off my Mac's AirPort card) without a hitch, as does my mate's 3G; try any other phone however, whether it be an N97, Diamond, LG Viewty, E63, etc, and you can't access the network.
All of these other phones detect the network and let you try to access it with the password, but all return an error message 'Cannot connect to network' or something similar.
It's somehow firewall related, as when I turn off all security, these non-Apple phones can connect, but with security on, only Apple phones (as far as I've tested) can connect.
It should simply be that you can connect if you've got the password, as I haven't set up any MAC ID filters. It just doesn't pan out that way though. I thrash the WiFi on my phone, so I have to get this sorted before even contemplating getting a non-iPhone. Ideas?

I'm not a big network security person, but isn't there different types of network security (WEP is the only one that's coming to mind at the moment)? You might want to check what sort of connection the Wifi network is using and make sure the other phones can access it.

Got to my localat about 9, and the store was full and there was a queue outside. They only had 8 of each model and Iwas futher back in the queue than that. They were doing a raincheck thing where you start the contract and they send you a phone when they get it, because of that they give you a month free on the contract and the handset payments.
I was apparently 1st on the list, but they needed a statment that I couldn't get today in time, so I'll go back tomorrow, which will most likely move me to the end of the queue.
Also, some old guy was raging out the front because he was "promised he'd get one", and it was first come first served. "Go get my phone" "I'm not leaving without a phone" etc.

They are similar. The $59 you get 500mb more,$100 less included credit, but the 32gb model is $8per month more.

30-07-2010, 07:20 PM
I can't get the ****er to drop bars by shorting the antenna for the life of me, America's services must suck so much.
At the store where I was working, about a dozen people in the line tried the death grip and most of them couldn't get a single bar to drop. This is in a five bar reception area, so those two phones didn't have a problem. No idea on whether any customers reported it happening, though.
Cubby
30-07-2010, 07:28 PM
I'm not saying there isn't an issue there, but it's really no worse tha tthe previous versions. I can get my 3G to drop ~2 bars with the death grip.
So I was in the city today and figured eh, why not - I'll get an iphone 4. It'll end up being cheaper in the long run to pay the $380 cancellation fee and switch to a cheaper plan, considering I don't use the phone as much as I used to these days. So yay, iphone 4 etc

Can I get my contract switched over at an optus store, or do I have to cancel it through virgin first?
If you're actually still under contract with Virgin, you'll have to pay an Early Termination Charge to cancel those contract terms and switch over to Optus. You'll also have to start a new 12/24 month contract with Optus. If this is the case, and is what you want to do, an Optus store will be able to take care of all of the paperwork for you. You don't have to contact Virgin yourself to end your dealings with them in this situation. The ETC is generally as simple as months remaining x monthly tariff.
If you're already out of contract with Virgin, and just want your number ported across to Optus, again, go to an Optus store and they'll arrange everything for you, and there'll be no charges.
fishfishmonkeyhat

So I just called Virgin (just love Indians trying to sound like.. what, American?) and I still have nfi what I can do plan-wise. They did tell me my cancellation fee would be $36 dollars plus a percent of something and something which really doesn't tell me anything at all.
Assuming I walked into an Optus store and they had some, can I just cancel my Virgin plan through them (and get them to unlock the phone while I'm at it?) Someone tell me.
EDIT: ****, thanks KC.
Will my old 3G then be unlocked and I can chuck it on ebay as such?

I went to my Optus store at 9am today. Signed up for a 32gb (which are apparently the least popular at the store) and was told I'll have it within the next week. As long as I'm not waiting a month, then there's no problem.

Isn't your 3G jailbroken? Doesn't that do a network/carrier unlock on the phone?
check by getting a friend's sim card or something that's not virgin - if it is locked you can JUST unlock it without jailbreaking it if you want.

Like Cubby and tau said, install the official OS, and test a SIM from another carrier if you can. If it's unlocked, sweet, if not, Virgin will do it for free. If they're like Optus though, it can take up to ten days if you do it over the phone. See if you can do it instore, if it needs to be done.

Well I went into an Optus store today and was all set to sign with them, unfortunately I didn't have 100 points of ID on me, so it's going to have to wait until tomorrow. They also said the wait is now 3 to 4 weeks, but you get the first month free, and I'll be able to use my old phone in the mean time.
I could hardly hear the Indian I was talking to when I needed to retrieve my account number from Virgin, and was disappointed when I asked the Optus guy if they had local help. Apparently one help center in Australia you'll be lucky to contact.

The iPhone 4 only takes micro sims, so you have to have them.

I did them separate, I wanted them in the Windows Address book as a backup incase the "backup" didn't put them on the new phone. Instead of adding them to the PC, it wiped them from the phone, and it didn't give me a warming that they would be erased off the phone like it normally does for various things.
Then I tried a backup I made a few days ago, and that didn't restore them either.

The 'Newsrack' RSS app recently had an update that makes it crash everytime you load it unless you have a 3GS/4G :( They've removed themes too unless you have an iPad which makes no sense to me. Now I'm forced to use another RSS app in the meantime, luckily I downloaded 'RSS Flash g' during its freebie day ($3.99 normally) although its not ideal for viewing comics at fullscreen size. What annoys me is them saying don't register or do anything with optus, register with us and I'm garuanteed a phone. Then on the day I'm told I am 13th in line and they only have 10 phones so I'm now 3rd in line and they should get some in on Wednesday so I'll have it then. After they have sorted out my contract, signed me up, they tell me that optus will give me a call when my phone is in.
I'm like wtf. What happened to me being 3rd in line and getting my phone on your next shipment? If I'd known that I should have registered with optus I would have done that all along, I wouldn't have bothered eith this shitty store that is ****ing me around.
So I call up yesterday and they are going on about how they don't have any control over their stovk and that optus will txt me. I say that they told me that because they are franchised and that they told me to register with them I was guaranteed a phone in the order that I was on in that list. And now that optus is in control, how do they know where I am on this stores list?
This whole thing basically makes the store it self irrelevant. I should have just registered with optus in the first place. They tell me that they control the stock they get in, (not how much they get but who it goes too), and now they tell me optus is in control of their stock (as in how many they get but WHO it goes to aswell) and they can't give me a phone.
Im afraid your going to run into the same problem when you go in tomorrow.

Regurgitating same information as told to 15 customers today..
Can't say I didn't tell you so about them reserving you one, no stores were doing that. And whilst I do feel a bit sorry for you being 13th in line and missing out still, that's Apples fault for launching the phone across 17 bloody countries on the same day. Fact is people are going to buy it no matter how long they have to wait.
Optus send the phones out as they get them to each individual store at the pace they get them from Apple. Our store alone had 100 pre-orders, now multiply that by however many stores there are in Australia + stores such as telechoice. You complain about them having no control of the stock, what do you want them to do? Pull one out of their arse and give it to you? Hell your store may not have even received any from Optus yet. When they get sent in they're attached with a name that Optus give the store and the store can't budge on that. The phone was released Australia wide and you aren't more important then anybody else who ordered one, so just sit back, relax, be patient, you'll get the phone.
For the record we got our first 2 iPhones to give to customers who rainchecked them. It's going to be a slow process.
nintendo
05-08-2010, 11:17 PM
Thats the annoying part. Obviously the rain check and optus getting involved is a new thing otherwise why wouod I have been told I'd get one next shipment.
I don't see why optus doesn't just send out phones to each shop and let each shop divvy them up like they did with their first batch. That's my main point i guess. If I'd known it would have been all optus, even when I was told it had nothing to do with them, then I wouldn't have bothered with a store at all.
Also, I'm not complaining a out them having no stock, that's understandable when there are over 100 000 orders in place, what I'm complaining about is what I've said above, if I'd known not to bother with the store I wouldn't have. If I had just gone with optus in the first place I'd be further up their supposed que than I am coming from a store.
Also, just a question, but I was told that when I get my txt I could pick it up from any store, is that true? Or like you said are they coming into stores with names on them?
EDIT: Was it just stores around my area that only took orders? That also shits me because for the previous 2 launches that wasn't the case, and then they go and change it without so much as a word or sign of advertisement.

That's another thing, there are really 2 lists, one for people waiting on the 16gb, and one for the 32gb. The 32gb has a longer wait apparently, so of course people that ordered the 16 will get it earlier than the people who are waiting for the 32, even if they ordered it later.
Also, I got an sms from Optus today, now of great importance, just to say that they are still processing it and they will let me know when it's ready etc blah blah blah.

Also, I don't think it has been explained. I still am at a loss as to where I am on a list, and I still cannot get a garuantee of no one else getting theirs before me.
I you look at it going by the initial list then I'm 3rd in line. If you go by raincheck order then I'm first. But still no txt.
Edit: maybe I should write out my questions lol
1. What happened to my place in line?
2. If Optus is going by their raincheck order for each store, then I am 1st in line, so where is my txt?
3. If the lady I spoke to is correct, and you can go to any store to pick up your phone, what's to say someone else from another store hasn't gone and picked my phone up?
Are you unable to read or something?
1. Your place in line means shit.
2. Optus send the phones out with names on it, stores don't have a say.
3. As above, your phone will have your name on it.
Good God how have you not picked that up yet? I feel like I'm getting dumber.

It's a modified version of LockInfo from Cydia, not sure on the cost >_> definitely worth it.
Modified?
and I still cannot get a garuantee of no one else getting theirs before me.
That is not a terrible thing.
Also, I got an sms from Optus today, now of great importance, just to say that they are still processing it and they will let me know when it's ready etc blah blah blah.
Me too, I thought it was kind of pointless myself.

SMS' are stored on the phone, they should only go if you delete them or wipe the phone. That or just forward one number to the other.

Pranced into JB today and they had stock in. So my partner and I each grabbed a 32GB model.
We decided to go with Telstra's $49 cap ($400/500mb) because we won't need high data because of home Wi-Fi and it gives us a good amount of call value (at the cheapest rates) for a low monthly fee. Plus Next G network = faster.
I think I'll finally get round to plugging it in now...

It says in the contract that your $550 can't be used for downloads. If you go over it's all charged on top of your bill.

16-08-2010, 06:26 PM
Well, I have $122 of the $550 gone to internet. Apparently ~200mb = $45 of credit. So what's the deal with that if it can't be used for data.

Is it on your bill or your MyAccount? Data always shows up as money in both, just watch the data you're using. As an example I used 68MB (the joys of WiFi) and it came up as $6.05 this month. Nothing to worry about.
Cubby
16-08-2010, 11:36 PM
MyAccount. It's a bit ridiculous that you get $550 and 2gb, when the 2gb will use $400-450 of the call credit.
Spazzallo
16-08-2010, 11:43 PM
What I mean is it doesn't use call credit. Just ignore the monetary value next to your data, it means squat.
Knuckle Children
16-08-2010, 11:47 PM
The data use shouldn't be included in your call credit. You should be getting 2GB of data AND $550 of call credit (calls to landline/mobiles and SMS/MMS), completely separate of each other. At least, that's how my Optus plan works.
EDIT: Yeah, what Spazz said.

Most I've ever used is 400MB. And I'm on my phone always. The only way you'd probably get close to 2GB is if you stream a lot of video, or use your phone for internet tethering.
Figured I'd just point this out to people seeing as it seems a lot of you are on Optus:
If you have access to an ABN number you can switch to Business Complete Advantage (exactly the same as the Extreme iPhone plans, just includes unlimited voicemail). Then you can sign a Month to Month contract (ie: not locked in) for $15 a month ($10 if you're on a $79 plan or higher) and you score a free mobile broadband modem (those little sticks you plug into your laptop for those who don't know) which shares your data between the phone the stick (you get a bonus 500MB for the stick too). If you do it before the end of August, the first 3 months are free (comes as a credit on second or third bill) and you can cancel at the end of those 3 months, keeping the modem. Easy way to score a $150 modem for free which you can do whatever you want with, either go on prepaid or take out another month to month contract, so pretty good for students. The only catch is you need to cancel at the end of the 3 months in order to be eligible for the credit back. But eh. Figured someone may be interested. Been doing it for some mates.
