It's been hinted at work that with the loss of one our clients (or rather, they have a new DC which will be providing them with 90% of their lines), work may die down to the point that I'm no longer required. All depends on how well the DC goes and if they keep 90% of the lines there or not. :/

My internet has been down since friday. God damn it. No XBL for me and Jickle, Hiredman and Jay are all on playing Battlefield...Bah!

The IINET guy came on tuesday to have a look but i forgot to tell my housemate and he went off somewhere (so not like him!) so the tech dude couldnt get in. I talked to him-apparantly I'm the only person ever to have their main telephone fuse box array thing INSIDE their apartment. Normally its outside. Grrrr....Now I gotta wait until Friday consarn it.

Thank Jebus for idiots who don't secure their wireless router! Its slow, but it does work about 3/4 of the time. What is this, the middle ages?

lol i spent $90 on a Norwegian textbook + CDs. O_o

I ran into two lost Norwegian guys trying to find Kinkakuji Temple yesterday. They were really awesome. We ended up tagging along with each other to various places around Kyoto, and went out to a Geisha district for sake and sushi last night. We got onto the topic of languages, and they taught me how to say a few basic phrases in Norwegian. It sounds like a complicated language, grammar-wise. Nowhere near as hard as Japanese though. >.>

Edit: That reminds me... why Norwegian? The guys were explaining that almost everyone under 30 speaks English over there just fine, so learning the local language (and dialects) wouldn't be a necessity for stuff like travel.

The toilet at work is broken so I went to the toilet in a food court at lunch time and the basin thing was basically a tilted bench and the taps were these big handles on the wall. I tried pushing them, turning them, waving my hand and eventually worked out that you have to tilt them backwards to get water to come out.

How are you supposed to handle your partner of 5 years leaving you? I tried doing it her way and just give her space and try stay out of the way but that just left me feeling powerless (even more than I already was from having no say in her decision). Then I tried convincing her she wasn't making the right decision which made me feel better because I was doing something about it but really in her eyes I was just making things worse. Which is bullshit because I can either do nothing and lose her or I can try do something and lose her anyway...

Now she wants us to rotate seeing our friends which is crap because she is the only one stopping us all hanging out together. So now I am seeing who my real friends are because god damn I need some especially with one of my "mates" having his eye on my gf for some time now the ****.

Just focus on the important things in your life: career, hobbies, family. They will get your mind off her.
If she won't give you the light of day, she doesn't deserve your attention anyway!
When you find the next one, you'll be so grateful for what you have. At the very least, the only thoughts of her that will occupy your mind will be gratitude that you didn't hang onto that one.

The cat, is a tough one though. On one side, it would be a constant reminder of her. On the other, you obviously have an individual attachment to him/her. But i'd say hang onto it if you can, coz you'll get over the girl anyway.

Yeah the cat is tricky, not because of the constant reminder just that I bought him for her - so really he is hers. But I <3 him so much!

It's bad timing too because I finally got a real job (relating to my degree) which I should be ecstatic about but it's hard to get excited.. :/

You won't get over her for a very long time.

So? Just do a purely knowledge based course if you want to and if you'll enjoy it, it doesn't all have to be about how much money you'll be able to make out of what you've learned!

Besides, if you do a more 'practical' course and end up in a career going down that path, but you're aren't happy with it, then isn't that worse anyway?

Well you could always finish your accounting degree (assuming that it's a career you at least might not object to) and then look at post-graduate studies.

Why? Who decided that the point of university (and while I'm here you could extend this point to high school nowadays as well) was simply to turn everyone in society into lawyers and doctors? Are you only allowed to be able to learn more about the world and how to understand it better if you earn $500k+ a year?

If I was into hyperbole I'd continue on to tell everyone who was born with inherent skills and interests in language and grammar or philosophy or whatever but not in many other areas to kill themselves now because they have no point in the world anymore.

EDIT: Not to mention the fact that there's a bit of a false idea in the minds of people that these types of courses only involve a bunch of people sitting in a room reading books together and arguing whether the use of 'which' or 'that' is more correct in a sentence, there's many (and I do mean many) subjects you can choose in these types of courses alongsode your normal knowledge based ones that do have more practical uses and opportunities for a career (see: learning a language, there's a few computing courses you can do, psychology and stuff as well). Just because you choose an arts style course doesn't mean you have to completely shut yourself out of any real money making opportunities (if that's what actually concerns you, anyway).

However, I feel like at the moment I'm trying to find a compromise between what Aran is saying and the practicality of getting a job which pays allright (allright, I dont have to earn monsterbucks or anything).

I'm only a year into my acc degree, so a lot of the stuff I've done is general business and can be used as exemptions in an Eco degree, which is what I'm currently looking at.

Unfortunately Eco degree at RMIT (which would be easy to swap to) has a lot of finance subjects which don't really appeal.

I had a mate who was easily one of the smartest people I know, but he had a passion for drama and the music. He was doing a science degree of some kind (Biology I think) and in the first year he filled some of his elective subjects with drama relating things. He switched to an Arts degree in the second year and (AKAIK) he's never been happier. Last I heard, he's currently in Ireland loving life with his music career.

Why? Who decided that the point of university (and while I'm here you could extend this point to high school nowadays as well) was simply to turn everyone in society into lawyers and doctors? Are you only allowed to be able to learn more about the world and how to understand it better if you earn $500k+ a year?
Well, ideally university should be for people who want to expand their knowledge and not people seeking better paid jobs. What I was pointing out is the reality of the situation, in particular with respects to slippery's inital post about what to do. It is also why I suggested completing the accountign degree to have soemthing to fall back on and then consider graduate studies if accounting was not intellectually fulfilling. This is of course based on the premise that he doesn't mind accounting all that much.

If I was into hyperbole I'd continue on to tell everyone who was born with inherent skills and interests in language and grammar or philosophy or whatever but not in many other areas to kill themselves now because they have no point in the world anymore.
And you'd further my point about the futility of going to university for the pursuit of knowledge. Instead you'd perhaps be better off emphasising the benefits of pursuing knowledge over career or pointing out that a person's life is not solely determined by their career.

Considering swapping out of my uni degree to something else.

I'm doing an accounting degree at rmit at the moment but I feel a bit like I did it because I'm clever (and concieted <.<) but don't really dig science or any of the other "clever" subjects. I'm interested by a lot of the arts degree style subjects like modern history and languages but it's pretty difficult to make a career out of them.

So I'm not really sure what I should do, other then look into economics, which is a field I'm interested in which may actually have jobs.

Ugh

changing degrees/dropping is a big decision that you really need to think about. Of course it's fun to tackle things in life as they go, but if you are concerned about your future (which you assumingly are by your post), then think about your end goals.

You don't necessarily have to be 'an accountant' with an accounting degree so there's several options for you! Some companies simply offer positions to business graduates in general.
Is there any organisation you wished you worked for/are passionate about? Maybe work towards landing a position there and seeing what graduate programs they offer.

Perhaps a simple change in your student lifestyle is all you need to peak your interest. Study sessions with your classmates, or even extra curricular activities with them - that way you have something to look forward to once a class is over.

Well, actually, that's fair enough. Although like I said, you can study something to 'fall back on' alongside what else he wants to study, doesn't necessarily have to be an entire 'accounting' course followed by such and such Arts course (because that costs much more on your HECS debt ;))

I don't hate accounting, I just feel like it's not interesting, I'm certainly not passionate about it at all. Sometimes I wonder if, like Mellomaniac said, I found an acc job at an awesome place, with a good atmosphere or purpose maybe that'd be allright.

For the moment though, I'm going to try and find out what sort of jobs there are that focus on my main (almost job like) interests; arguing about things, economics and politics/modern history stuff.

If you're as clever as you think you are, and you're truly passionate about what you want to do, you'll succeed in anything. If you're only a little bit clever then don't bother, though. Stick with accounting.

Nothing's wrong with you. I've gone through the same thing at different points in my life (I think just about everybody has or is going to). Focus on the things you have. It may sound a bit cliched, but focus on your loving family, how successful you are in your career or the great plans that you have for the future.

Once last year a friend of mine emailed me at work seeing if we could catch up, which of course I said, yes.

At some point between asking me, and me actually turning up, another friend of hers (who I later learned I had actually met once, not that I remembered her name or face) had come back from Perth and messaged her asking if they could catch up.

So I spent an hour feeling like an idiot as I sat there silently as these two talked and talked and talked between themselves.

Ended just getting up and walking out. And its not the first time something like that had happened with the same friend. She once broke plans we had made, 30 minutes before we were supposed to meet, because some other friend of hers had asked her to do something.

Another time she organised to meet me, and then rushed it through in 30 minutes because she had made some appointment at a beautician she had forgotten about :/

Took a while, but I've eventually given up. We used to hang out a fair bit after Uni finished and we ended up in the same city. But as she started a job within marketing and PR it was natural she'd find a new circle of club rat friends to hang out with, where I don't really fit in.

The fact that she seemed to make little effort in actually keeping in touch with me outside of that circle (or a nightclub) meant we've just drifted apart. I just gave the f*** up.

This has happened to me one or two times too. One time I was meant to meet up with a friend in the city, but found out they wouldn't be there because I ran into a mutual friend who told me that this other friend had been called into work at the last minute. And I had not been informed! Recently another friend said that we should catch up on the following Friday, then stopped replying to my messages when I tried to organise a time/place.

Yeah, the worst thing for me is that I don't have many friends I'd hang out with, so I'll probably end up giving him a yell in a couple of weeks seeing if he wants to do something. After an awesome night out im in a really really angry mood. Waiting for the bus because the Midland line was down (again) and theres theses to little 'homies' trying to start shit. One of them comes up to me and asks for my name. I didn't want trouble so i was polite and answered, asked what his was. He replyed and shook my hand. Next thing i know his little mate is coming up asking if im being smart. Prick says i am so the little one starts getting in my face. Then out of nowhere the first one punches me in the face over his shoulder. I have my hands full with cd's and shirt from cd launch i was just at so i can't swing back. Just spat out some blood and walked into the station where i found 3 police. Unfortunately they'ed ****ed off by the time we got downstairs again. I was sopposed to wait while they looked for them but I'd already been waiting half an hour for the bus after a long day so i just got on when it showed up. >_>

Yeah, people are ****ed. Apparently they also hit this other guy who was on the bus before i got there. They were lucky he's not a violent person as it turns out he's on leave from the army and been in plenty of fights.

EDIT: does anyone know if it would be worth going to my local police station and making a statement or whatever just incase they did end up catching them and getting their details or would it most likely not be worth it. I feel bad for wasting the police officers effort in chasing them, i was just so tired and didn;t want to risk missing that bus with how long they are in between.

It'd be worth making a statement just so if this guy was ever caught, it's something else that can be added to their charges. Also, I think you can call 131 444 (the WA police assistance number) and give a report over the phone. Don't quote me on that though.

Man that shit is ****ed up, sorry to hear it. Yeah, make a report for sure. There's a lot of that crap at the Perth train-o or thereabouts. Just bored dumbshits starting crap for no reason, beacuse they have no money to go out and have fun, like you clearly were. I've still never had any randoms start on me about anything, which sort of surprises me considering how much I go out and catch public transport home late at night. I don't know how I'd deal with it...Probably rage.

That was the Siren Tower launch you mentioned in the gigs thread aye? Wanted to go to that, but I'm really not well at the moment and focussing all my energy on trying not to get full-on sickness. Good, I trust? Must check em out.

EDIT! They have lots of CCTV in an around the traino, the whole city really. Give them the time it happened and theyll probably be on crime stoppers!

Man, I was on a bus last night, and these two incredibly drunk guys were harrassing just about everyone on there. They kept asking all the Indian girls in the back row how long they'd been in Australia, asking them for sex, and when they were rejected yelling "this is why people are racist!". They kept pretending they were going to steal my MP3 player, they started hassling the guy in front of me for reading a book, and they got really stuck into this Asian guy who jumped off at a stop that obviously wasn't his. They kept trying to get people interested in buying ecstacy off of them, too. They were mostly nice to me because whenever they asked me anything I'd just agree with them, and if they made any jokey threats of violence I'd say "nah you wouldn't do that, you're nice guys" (which they agreed with), but right before they got off they seemed to decide that I was getting smart with them. As they were getting off one of them spat at me for some reason (he missed), then kicked the bus once he got off.

I felt like a bit of a pussy because I didn't do anything about them when they were harrassing the other people on the bus...but I'm not a fighter, and there was two of them. The one guy they weren't starting on said that he sees them on there fairly regularly, and they're absolute wankers generally, but mostly "all talk". Bunch of savages in this town!

I don't think you should feel too bad. I imagine that fighting back really wouldn't gain anything. I anticipate that it'd be a matter of:

1) Getting your ass handed to you.
2) Handing their asses to them but then they call some mates.
3) Handing their asses to them and having charges of assault filed against you.

I'm glad I rarely go on public transport and when I do it's only going on V-Line.

It doesn't even have to come to violence though. A lot of the time just speaking out and showing you're not intimidated by them is enough to shut them up. As mentioned a lot of trouble makers are all talk. Also, if they swing first you can hand their arse to them AND then file for assault against them. Handy little thing called self defence.

i gave a statement to the police about an incident that occured at my hotel.
a guy apparently hit his gf during an argument. The girl phoned down and ased us to call the cops. The guy left the hotel(possible the firestairs since no one saw him leave through the lobby).

the girl came down to the lobby while the manager was comforting and when he used the restroom, the guy called the front desk I picked up (i'm concierge but I was doing a graveyard and were mainly at the front desk on that shft). He admitted he had a fight with his gf and the police were being involved so he left. He asked me If he could get the bond which he paid for, for the room. The room was under the gf's name but his credit card was on file. I said he would have to wait to speak to the manager and he asked me to get the manager to call him back asap.

So that was the end of that conversation. When the manager returned, I told him that the guy called. The manager didnt call him. The cops arrived and spoke to the girl. I thought that was the end of it for us.
Months later, I get a call from the cops to provide a statement. I believe in justice so I did. And I thought THAT was the end of it....

Now I have to go to court in october. Don't know why, not much else I can add to what is in the statement.

Broke my wooden-handled spade while leveraging out a hydrangea plant yesterday. Once I get my gardening-game-face on I'm pretty much a unstoppable force of unstoppableness; hence, gardening tool casualties.

May have to invest in a steel-handled jobby but those things cost frickin heaps.

Digging out plants is a pain. I was ripping out one thing (can't remember what it's called, they're all weeds to me!) but it was so heavy that I couldn't lift it to move it to my pile out the back so I just kind of hacked it with a rake and managed to roll it away leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

I need a mighty axe for chopping large things into smaller things...

I hear ya. Such satisfaction eh?

Amateur mistakes. If you're putting that much force into trying to lever a plant out of the ground and it's not working it's obviously still got roots connected. Work your way around the plant while thrusting the shovel/spade in under it to cut any connecting roots running off the main root system. Once they're out the way it's easy sailing.

Stevo, get a spade with a decent edge on it and break that shit up next time.

Lost my jacket and also almost certainly got a speeding ticket (in unconnected events). Great times.

EDIT: What's wrong with me? I'm cooking tuna burgers and I put the pan on the bottom right plate and then turn on the bottom left plate. After about 10 minutes I notice they're not cooking and turn off the bottom left plate and turn the top left plate on instead.

I do that far too often.

Atm I'm feeling like setting fire to Vista. Trying to turn the Windows Sidebar back on since I found a use for it (a gadget that calculates my quota) but then when attempting to turn it on it says "windows sidebar is managed by your system administrator". But I AM the admin! Even thought the UAC's disabled it still doesn't give me control for a stupid ***king program that can be turned off but not turned back on! Wtf is the point of that?! I'd rather be getting an illegal operation message just so I can laugh at its face for being so pathetic

Had enough of Vista, seriously. And no matter what I do I still can't disable that Windows Security List notification even after modifying my msconfig to stop starting up - I've already got my own internet security running, I don't care if my Windows Defender is disabled, just let me do what I want! :(

Have you tried right clicking and selecting "run as administrator"?

Yup, still doesn't let me. Even after doing that annoying MSDOS thing

I had hacked off all the roots the plant was just heavy and I'm not very strong!

But I do need better gardening tools, at the moment I've just got old ones my grandma gave me that are as old as time itself!

In a few months we will have Windows 7 and the problems with Vista will all be over. I just hope I don't break my laptop by doing a complete format, I'm sure all this HP software that I keep finding all over the place does something to make it work >_>

I was delayed by half an hour tonight on the train because a train in front of us caught fire or something. It was lame but whatever

Plus I keep worrying about random shit going on in my life and shit that's not even happening but has tiny potential to happen but I have no control over anyway, it's ****ing annoying. I need to be able to switch off my brain or something.

If you find a way to switch your brain off, let me know. I am always worrying about stupid shit. I've spent the past few days worrying that I may be gay and not know it, which in itself is pretty stupid as I'm pretty sure I'm into girls. All this is doing is causing a lot of anxiety. I honestly think I may be going insane.

See your doctor about going to a shrink. They'll likely suggest some anti-anxiety pills while they get to the root cause, but it'll all help.

I used to never be able to sleep. I could never switch off, I'd always be thinking about tomorrow, about things I need to do, plans that need to be made, where I've done something wrong (hell, even minor issues from several years ago). I can now sleep and sleep well and it's GREAT. I still 'spiral' sometimes, but I'm generally able to pull myself out.

I was seeing a shrink at the start of the year, but I'd thought I'd gotten better. Obviously not. It's really disappointing as I worked really hard to get better last time, and now I'm back at the start.

The problem is we you need to keep working on it (assuming you went down teh cognitive restructuring route). Sadly, we can't just be "all better" as we can fall in the old habits quite easily. As much as I try to pretend it's a passive skill, it's an active skill and I need to put effort in to making sure I don't get stuck.

HP software that came with your laptop? Completely useless, its basically just bloat on top of the bloat of Vista.

I love how much people hate vista though, I've never ever had any real problems with it. Windows 7 is way better, but Vista is just fine.

eh

It's really hard to break years and years of negative thinking and bad habits >_<

I don't need those programs like the Wifi tool? I would have formatted from the start but the only copy of Vista I have is actually just a recovery partition on the harddrive. All computers should come with a ****ing Windows disk >_<

Personally, I love Vista and find it difficult to go back to XP.

You shouldn't, or if you do need it, you should have CDs that came with it for them.
When I got my laptop the first thing I did was install Windows 7 on it, and it works absolutely fine.
Windows' generic drivers are ****ing awesome anyway.

Just got nudged on the road on the way to work.

Some 4WD was trying to get passed me before I had completed half a lane change, and I had to switch back. Unfortunately they had already snuck their nose in line with my right rear quarter panel.

Luckily no major damage. Some like paint marks, and maybe a light dent... though it could just be the wheel arch tricking me.
