Serial number changes AFAIK
Mine had the same serial number when I got it back, but the console number was different, so I think they just swapped the guts out and transferred my serial number to it, but I had to reinstall all of my disc games because they said they were installed on a different console.

My 06/2007 20gb Pro console has died again. This is the second E74 in less than 12 months. In total, this old box has been repaired for:
*RROD
*Disc Drive Failure
*RROD
*E74
*E74
If they wern't fixing these for nix every time, i would have dumped it by now. Its only a console used by other household members now as i have an Elite as my main console.
I was really suprised to see that my registered console was still covered for this repair. The online repair logging (for registered console) even provides you with a reciept now which has $0 in every column, with the description of repair as :
XBox 360 Console Service-E74 (Exchange) 1 $0.00
I haven't seen this before, so it must be new. Now waiting on shippping label.

Bugger the forum protocols I desperate and need answers now.
Have jus bought a 42" HDTV w/HDMI port.
Hooked up HDMI to 360 and "not supported" comes up.
Hooked up normal cable to HDTV no problem except only runs 50hz and looks like arse.

tried everything; changing around the hdmi ends, tv to 50hz, tv to 60hz, normal av cable hooked up to do this as hdmi is still "unsupported"

Also sausage:
a) this doesn't require a thread of it's own;
b) you could've posted your problem in Tech Head sub or Xbox Gen in the 360 problems thread.
I'm going to lock this as it seems you've decided to get a decent TV tomorrow anyway.

As of today, mine is being shipped back. Yay! I swear, if they havent replaced this overrepaired unit with a shiny new one-they need their heads read. The cost of repairs and shipping on this puppy would now well and truly outweigh the original purchase price(or what MS recieved) for this console. Seriously, what is an out of warranty repair?? $130 odd. Multiply that by 5 = $650 (then add 5 lots of shipping too and from -$10 each way?-$100??). They could have replaced it with a shiny arcade, which probably costs MS $150!!
Mind you, this old Pro is my most silent console (after the 2nd RROD repair).

Mine red ringed last monday (1st march). Checked the status today and apparently it's being shipped back. Looks like it's been replaced though as the old system was 0036 and the one that is now registered to me (according to the xbox website) starts 0201 for the serial number.
Sadly though my warranty doesn't seem to have been extended. On my old one it said 21/4/2010 but the new one registered to me says 6/5/2010.

Well, its back and its been replaced with a 'refurb' (different serial number and a new faceplate). Thought i might get an upgrade to a console withe HDMI port and different power supply. But according to this site http://www.360drives.com/howto i may have an Opus (no HDMI), but the power supply info on that site does not match the info on my console. The power connector on this replacement console indicates Xenon/Zephyr.
The sticker on the back of the console now shows 'service date' (09/02/09) as opposed to 'Manufacture date'.
Havent had a chance to fire it up yet to check what type of DVD drive this unit has, but one thing i notice is the refurb has 'Delta' fans installed which are allegedly the noisier ones (grrrr). The old pro that was sent in was near silent (although i never checked to see what was installed) after its second RROD repair-if this refurb is noisier, i'll be ringing MS and reporting a faulty unit!

I have a problem with my original xbox. Bloody dvd player keeps opening and closing the tray. I can get around it by holding it in with my finger for 2 seconds and then it accepts the disc just fine. I bought a cheapo pre-owned for 49 bucks from EBs just in case its on the way....
New old xbox is just fine, runs quieter too.

Oh hey Sausage, I tried the 360 with an HDMI cable in my parents' Konka 42" - didn't work. Works fine with analogue cable but it could be something to do with HDCP?
They didn't mind too much as they don't use it for gaming but at least you know it's a problem with the model of TV rather than the one that you tried being broken.

HDCP shouldn't be an issue, except perhaps with the HD-DVD player, as games don't use it. Even if it was causing the issues, such a problem should bring up an error on the TV.

Just as I was about to put the final nail in the Bengals' coffin.
freeradical
10-04-2010, 06:56 PM
Yeah, ive had that before on my MW2 install. The disc had developed fine 'cracks' around the centre hole (i think it may have been stood on at some point). These had slowly gotten bigger until they started to enter the 'data' part of the disc. So when the 360 did its mandatory check that the disc was in the drive-no go.
Of course, yours could just be a scratch or dirt.
OR, do you mean an installed arcade title?.

Yeah I moved my XBOX onto the 47" LCD in the lounge last night (was on a 19" 4:3 LCD monitor in my room) and for the last two nights it keeps freezing (Madden 10, BFBC2, Forza 3).
Only two solutions left on the support page are to clear the cache, and reseat the hard drive.
If its dying, its taking a f***ing long time. **** I hate the fragile nature of these modern day consoles. My PS2 still works after some 9-10 years.
Lazlow
18-04-2010, 01:28 AM
Well I'm thoroughly stumped.
I moved my XBOX back to the 19" 4:3 LCD monitor, but it still kept freezing. I've deleted the game install and ran it from disc, cleared the cache, reseated the hard drive, played it without the hard drive, and unplugged it from the modem; but it still kept freezing.
I tried persevering through some BFBC2 tonight with HiredMan and Jickle, but the freezing got to me in the end.
BUT... I've been playing UFC Undisputed for over an hour now, without a hitch O_o. The hard drive is still disconnected, so I'm not using a profile and therefore its not had any updates due to clearing the cache.
So don't know wtf is going on.
I've played the Jacksonville Jaguars 4 times now in Madden 10 because it freezes when trying to exit the game at the end and go back to my franchise screen, and therefore hasn't saved. It freezes relentlessly in BFBC2... but for some reason right now its stable as a rock.

So it keeps freezing, but won't red ring and die. So I'm contemplating two courses of action;
- ring MS and see if I can get it fixed. Now I bought it July 2007, but I'm pretty sure the 3 years only covers the RRoD. Can anyone C/D?
- buy an arcade (already got a 120gb HDD), and get the old one fixed at some point in the future (if its going to cost money) and sell it or trade it in.

Woah. The RDR image looks trippy; would be cool if there was a modifier to add that effect to all surfaces.
I had a similar problem with my Wii, although not quite as extreme. I'd say it's a hardware fault. That or because the image is effected the AV or HDMI cable was bumped a fraction of a nanometre?

Got my own problem now, dammit!
Previously on Blur (:P), I paused mid-race to leave the room and bumped the underside of my desk quite hard with my knee. My Xbox is on the desk and the jolt must have caused the disc to skip, as I got a "disc read error" message (first time ever) and was kicked to the dashboard. No biggie, I restarted and thought nothing of it until I retried the same race and got another disc read error. I restarted and tried two different tracks, which worked fine, then the original course gave the error again. So I checked the disc and there's a very noticable circular scratch around maybe 2/3 of the disc. :(
http://members.iinet.net.au/~trinityjayone/blurdisc.jpg
I've only been able to do that particular race once without it stuffing up, out of about 5 attempts. I'm 99% sure I installed the game too, so that won't help. I'm currently driving around in GTA4 to make sure it was just the bump and that my Xbox isn't buggered, as the only other game I have that streams constantly is RDR and I'm not going to risk that!
Does anyone know if DVDs are ok to machine polish? Starting to wish I had bought that damned game guarantee. :P

Yeah, just spend the cash and take it into a store that'll buff it for you. I get a LOT of people coming in with discs with grooves like that in them from bumping/ moving/ jumping around their 360's. The disc buffer we have at work would get that out in, what, 3 heavy cycles and have it back to new (or as good as). Takes about 15mins it total. And yeah, game warranties seem like a waste of cash, but when these things happen (which they do, even to those of us that take 'really good care' of our games), it can save you a nice penny.

I've had mine upwards of two years and it's still going strong. But I've had a mate who's had one of his shit itself due to failed modding (he purchased second hand) and two from RROD. Guess it just depends on luck and batch.

With the newer models it's less likely to happen, and if it does happen you'll be unlucky to have it happen for at least a couple of years.
If it's a system you've been looking at getting for a while, with games you're interested in playing, the RROD just isn't really a dealbreaker. It's an inconveniance.

My copy of GTA that I bought pre owned had that line on it, it's actually residue from oil/glue in the 360 drive mostly from older consoles. I took it to block buster for a $2 buff, the chick did it twice for me and it was flawless.
Nah this is definitely a scratch, you can feel the indentation with a fingernail etc. I'm still looking into it but there's no major rush, as the rest of the game plays fine apart from that one track so far, and it's a fairly average track anyway. :P

Last night my console was getting worse. It was freezing 5 minutes into any game - Forza, BFBC2, Red Dead, even front on the dashboard. It was also reading game discs as DVD movies.
So I assumed the disc drive is on the way out, as I can still play the SBKX and Backbreaker demos fine.
However I was able to play a good 30min-1hr session of SSFIV against HiredMan fine.
Today I've fired up Forza 3 for some La Sarthe action, and I've been playing for a good hour, until now. Was doing the R1 Fujimi Kaido series, and on the second leg the tracks disappeared. Tried to restart the race, but now its just frozen.
So is it GPU or disc drive that's failing me?
I could probably afford an Arcade unit today if I can find one for $200 - $250. I'm assuming most stores should be stocking the more recent models.

What's involved with transferring the gamertag/account?
You need to use the license transfer tool (http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/support/xbox360hardware/programs/license_transfer/default.htm) to migrate all your account to the new Xbox. Then I think you need to redownload all the DLC you want to use (and by "download" I mean "the console transfers the license over in about two or three seconds", not "download the entire thing again").

All Electronic goods can have issues. Even the much lauded PS3 has hardware failure. Even in the PC world there are failures of components. This, and the past history of the 360, is making me somewhat cautious. I will be waiting till xmas and hope there is some sort of Kinect package deal and that would have allowed a good six months to 'identify' emerging issues.
My Elite no longer reads discs when in the vertical position. I dont get the cant read disc message, i just get 'open tray' after disc has been put in (cannot select play disc). Now horizontal, and seems to have solved it-but it has upset the aesthetic of my set up, as i have the PS3 vertical on one side of the TV and the 360 vertical on the other.

I spent 4 ****ing hours last night trying to get my 360 to hook up to my new router and get onto Live. I did everything I could possibly think to do, followed Trin's guide as much as I could, searched on the net. I can't even point out the exact problem, I'll test the connection and it'll fail at a different step every single time I try without me changing a single option. '360 can't be assigned an IP', then it can, then 'Your MTU settings aren't high enough', and then suddenly they are. A few times I did manage to get to Live, where it said I had to download an update, so I press yes, where I'm meeted with 'Download failed' everytime. I'm going to try and download the update on my comp and put it on a CD to install but I have to go and buy some blank discs first, and I'm hoping there'll be an easier way.
I bought a Belkin modem/router (model's F5D5630au4 in case anyone's interested), so if there's any issues with that please tell me so I can go out and blow a car up in anger or something.

There is a general consensus on some forums (such as Whirlpool) that Belkin are to be avoided (consistant with my Belkin experience). Would be good if you could borrow a different brand router from someone/somewhere to eliminate if it is the Belkin that is the issue. Also, that model is fairly old (2006/7). Firmware update may be required? Firmware update here http://www.belkin.com/au/support/article/?lid=ena&pid=F5D5630au4&aid=7139&scid=845 However, in typical Belkin style the last update is March 2007. Might be worth a try though.

What he said. Even the proper settings can fail to hardware. I wrote the damned guide and perfect settings couldn't get 2 Boxes running with proper NAT. Came down to something on the router firmware (disappointing for a Linksys), cos I swapped it for a custom one and had it working in minutes.
Sometimes working and sometimes not is cos the router is letting packets through only half the time. For MTU try taking it off auto.1500 is a fairly safe setting I think.
AranchineD
12-08-2010, 08:54 AM
I don't even think this thing had an auto setting for MTU, when I checked it out it was already sitting on 1500. Even more bad news for me then, I guess.

Just had a really weird problem with my 360. I downloaded the Tempest Pack for Hydro Thunder, and when it finished, the notification to let me know I'd downloaded it kept popping up over and over and over again. I went to load up the game, and my 360 froze. I reset it, and the notification was still popping up. I went into 'Active Downloads', and it was still in the queue, alternating between 17% and 100% repeatedly. Eventually I switched to a different account and deleted the content from my hard drive from there, then jumped back to my primary account. I went into Active Downloads, and the Tempest Pack was back in there, but frozen at 17%. It wasn't letting me cancel the download, nor download anything else. Eventually, after fiddling around for about 10 mins, it let me stop the download, so I'm hoping my worries are at an end. It was really weird though, has anyone else encountered this?

Don't think so. I just have my profile stored on a usb. Quick and easy to use between the 2 machines.

Just got the RROD on my launch 20gb unit. Third time its happened to this box, out of warranty now though, looks like ill be trying to find a new one soon.
Gave it 5 minutes though and it started up again. Might be ok for a while but not sure.

There's still a launch 20gb unit out in the wild? That thing belongs in a museum!

Thing must've sounded like a ****ing 747 :D
Now is the perfect time to go get the $468 Kinect+250GB slim bundle from HN... They aren't bundling Dance Central any more, but it looks like you get Motion Sports and Your Shape: Fitness Evolved http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256973313672/xbox--gb-kinect-bundle

I really dont want kinect though.

The reason I mentioned that Kinect bundle is that the standalone 250GB with nothing is pretty much the same price. So you're getting a whole lot of extra shit for about $25.
Actually, Game have a 250GB with NFS: Hot Persuit and Medal of Honor for $499 which is pretty good.

I might pick up the harvey norman deal today and sell the kinect to a guy here at work.

Just keep in mind that the Kinect bundle with the console will only work on the new model because it doesn't have the extra power cable required for the old model 360.

Yep, but from what I've seen/read price varies from $30 to $50.

Don't know what you're into... Steel Battalion: Heavy Armour for Kinect was announced at TGS, as were a Suda 51 game, a horror game from Sega (Rise of Nightmares).. then there is stuff like You Don't Know Jack, Child of Eden.. oh and GET FIT WITH MEL B.
And of course http://www.hyper.com.au/forums/showthread.php?t=21217&highlight=panzer

Put a parental code on all games M and above when little cousins visited last month, I cannot remember the password... is there any way around this? I cannot remember my secret question and it won't even let me factory reset the console without removing the family setting code.

I very highly doubt this issue is user-serviceable, because if it was there'd be no point in turning it on in the first place.

You forgot your password and your secret question? How does one do that?
My suggestion is to call XBOX Support.

Sounds like you goofed up.
I searched online and found a bunch of different codes and processes, some simple and some complex. None of the simple ones worked for me and the complex processes were talking about the old dashboard. I'd call Microsoft.

So, I've got the RROD on a 4 yr old machine. How much will MS charge me for a refurb? Any ideas?
I barely use the thing, I can't justify $250ish on a new console and I'm guessing buying a second hand 360 is a minefield.

If it costs more than $250 to get a non Xbox slim refurb (you will be definitely getting a refurb), you're better off using the money for a new Xbox slim. Look around for some Christmas specials.
Anybody else having connection issues to LIVE after the dash update ?

Boxing day sales.
Wednesday (7-12-2011) specials for 4G Xbox Slim were $158 at Harvey Norman and $169 at JB.
Both cheaper than a 3DS!
Still waiting on fire sales for PS2 slim and DSiXL consoles.
