Or they could make you their bitch by making the plug a slightly different shape and/or voltage, giving the people who make the PSU more business.

It does look cool however once you put it in your hi-fi rack, it looks out of place. I still prefer my COD MW2 Elite console.
Does anyone know how many years we have left for this generation of Xbox 360s? I don't think Sony or Microsoft is going to feel threatened by Nintendo's new console next year.
It would be good if the Xbox 720 or whatever it's going to be called, can still use the peripherals and other devices we have already invested in, such as the Kinect, gamepads and hard drive expansion packs.
The Xbox 360's large PSU would also be reusable. Surely they can design a new console that runs on the same PSU, with less power consumption. They could shave $50 off the price of the console pack if they made the PSU a separate purchase, as well as reduce shipping cost.
That's a retarded idea man. Imagine some schmuck walking into a store and can't buy an xbox 720 because they only have the no psu packs, or ran out of seperate psu's.
Pai Mel
21-09-2011, 11:27 PM
Well I like to think that Microsoft want to keep R&D, and manufacturing cost down, in order to increase their profit. Weren't they selling the consoles for non or little profit before?
And Rambo, that would be the store's fault for not ordering enough PSUs.
Microsoft already keep an inventory of Xbox 360 PSUs in their spare parts warehouse don't they? They could distribute those and manufacture more as needed.

21-09-2011, 11:46 PM
If there's no PSU, the console literally cannot function, so selling it separately is just insane. It would make the "separate hard drive" move look like a stroke of genius.

Pai Mel
22-09-2011, 03:23 AM
Well then, they can just use the surplus 360 PSUs, bundled with the first batch of consoles, and redesign a cheaper & lighter one for later revision models.
We are all acquainted with the high prices of launch consoles so there's nothing wrong with trying to make it as cheap as possible, what with our gloomy economy and all.
I actually think the new Wii console is going to bomb at $450. You can buy a laptop /iPad with that money.
Shorty
22-09-2011, 03:46 AM
I'm confused - are you suggesting that MS save a little money by simply reusing the old PSU design in a future console or are you literally suggesting that MS ship new consoles that will not work unless stores break open their boxes of old stock (that probably still had sale value, unless you're suggesting that they actually have piles of PSUs sitting around on their own for whatever reason) in order to make them functional again? The former actually makes some business sense. The latter seems like a fever dream.
Bottom line, every console a manufacturer ships must have everything that is necessary for the machine to run at some basic level right there in the box. If the console absolutely can't function without it (such as, perhaps, the ability to convert AC electrical power into a usable DC current), then it shouldn't be an "accessory".

22-09-2011, 10:40 AM
Pai Mel, are you nuts?! Microsoft will never do what you say, they would be stupid to even dream of it as it'd create far more problems than it solves (which is none, btw). If you want to buy bits & pieces of your hardware you need to move to PC gaming.

I have an even better idea than both solar or rodent power - steam! I've taken the liberty of drawing up a diagram in MS Paint.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~trinityjayone/SPXbox.png
So, how does it work? Well, as you can see part of the case has been cut away (fig.1) and all the cooling revisions added with the Falcon SKU, as well as all heatsinks & heatpipes, have been removed. A small boiler has been attached to the CPU & GPU where these items used to be (fig.2). The water boils and pressurised steam flows through a pipe (fig.3) to the redesigned PSU (fig.4), which forgoes the standard transformer in place of a turbine driving a small generator. Steam that has passed through the turbine is then cooled in a radiator (fig.5) before passing back into the boiler. Meanwhile, power from the generator is routed to the console via the standard power connector (fig.6).
No messy coal, no radioactive uranium. It's the future!

Someone in a shop might.
Although you'd have been better off buying the $400 Gears 3 + Kinect & Game + 250gig bundle they had at EB until last week. Or you can go to Harvey Norman and see if they are still selling them, for $380.
Then just sell or trade in the Kinect if you don't want it.

Haven't owned a Sony console since my PS1's disc-skipping problems after only 1 year. And also because of the high console launch prices. By the time the price has dropped I have already purchased a competitor's console(s).
I'm not even really looking forward to next gen anymore. I think I will wait for real virtual technology ala Strange Days.
aubergine
28-10-2011, 03:53 PM
I'm actually champing at the bit for a next generation of consoles. Given the graphical divide between PC and Console versions of current games like Battlefield 3 and Skyrim, a new Xbox could come out next year and just sell upgraded versions of this Christmas' games (exactly as happened with the 360!)
Yes, PC has always had better versions available but I think it has reached a kind of critical mass. Mainly, it would be very affordable to buy a PC that shits on 360 compared to buying a 360 at today's prices.
Pai Mel
31-10-2011, 07:18 AM
Exactly. My next upgrade plan is my PC rather a console, as I am still on last gen's Q6600 cpu. If you have a SSD, loading games is incredibly fast. A console will need SSD or faster storage medium before I will even consider it. Also PC games are a good $20 cheaper on launch date.

If they're they same type of hard drive, wouldn't you be better to take the slim HD case apart and put it into that one? It looks like it goes in the bottom of the system, I wouldn't want it hanging from the connections only with nothing holding it at the sides.

No.
Well I've uploaded all my saves to the cloud in case I have a SOX moment.

To be honest I'm not in a rush, so I might just wait for the next insane sale I read about here.
If I didn't buy a couple of lampshades at HN, I would've bought a Xbox slim instead. <_<
Next insane sale will probably be EOFY. Otherwise end of first quarter (to make some sort of target).

Expect PS3/360 price drops when the Wii U is released.

I've seen 250g bundles with Kinect and 2 games for $300, that was at EB a while back. That deal may not still be running, but it's a sign of thing to come an even on sale, the 4g slim + separate hard drive has never been the best value around.
I've been thinking a great deal about selling mine after Mass Effect 3, although I'm not sure I even care about that.
I wouldn't mind a 250GB kinect bundle to keep younger relatives entertained when they visit. But there aren't any kinect games that interest me though. :/

Is this $13 thumb drive fast enough for Xbox 360?

Where's Creedy these days?
Here's how a real dragon game (PS3 Lair beater!) should look and play.

Pity it uses Kinect!

I thought of Creedy just last week or so, fellow with one arm at the pub made me think of him. Ah those vigorous debates, good times. The twin sticks on the Playstation vita might not help him, but with the rear touch panel he could finally fulfil his dream of playing a Sony product with his fanboy erection.

So I've ordered the R2D2 360 to replace my RROD one. Probably didn't need to go for it (could have gotten a cheaper one now) but I ordered it for the same reason TOR got me MMOs: It's SW and I'm a SW geek.

So has anyone else just had their gamerscore randomly wiped?

Yeah mine has been wiped, my brother lost his gamerscore as well at exactly the same time. Sounds like it's only a temporary problem but for a brief moment I'm free!

What a peculiar niche of fanfiction is the world of speculative hardware conceptualisation.
