Seeing as the weekly XBLA Wednesday updates bring something new (almost) every week, I figured we could keep all XBLA and XBLM related discussion, recommendations, news, and releases in the one handy thread.

I'd suggest we get started with general XBLA recommendations from the community. Lets get a big list together, argue it out, and sort the treasure from the trash.

I also downloaded the demo of MadBalls or whatever it's called, and will probably make a full purchase. I'm a sucker for rolling the ball games (awaits Stevo), and while this one seems occasionally meh, I did pass some pleasant moments with it.

But can I just say that Mission 29 on the single player campaign of Worms 2: Armageddon is a right bastard.

And that Battlefield is pretty fun.

Past week I have purchased:

Ikaruga
The Secret of Monkey Island
Battlefield: 1943
R-Type Dimensions

They are all awesome! I also recently got Worms 2 but the thing crashes whenever I try to go online :(

I'm going to get a midnight tan this weekend doing sweet FA but play Battlefield.

Up to level 33 in Worms 2 Armageddon. It's pretty damn hard. I had a look at the Team17 discussion board on Facebook, there are a few teething issues with matchmaking and such but a patch is on its way.

Apparently the massive Gears of War 2 DLC (containing all maps, etc) was released early for a few hours at half price, before being taken down again. My brother managed to snag it, while I was at work. :(

Yeah it was up for 800 points which would have been a steal for 19 maps and the deleted campaign 'scene'. But I'm so over Gears 2 that I probably wouldn't have bothered even if I had caught it.

When I first saw some of those trailers for the remake, I was appalled. It truly looked ridiculous.

Curiosity had me download the demo, and i'm surprisingly impressed. While Guybrush looks very odd in his movements about the place, the art style is interesting and the voice acting top notch. I also love how you can switch between the old and new versions on the fly (fascinates me to see their recreation of an old scene, and I find i'm constantly changing the view during all conversations).

It's up now, just played through the first five levels.

It's kinda of like... N+, except in that game you tried to avoid exploding. Here you're exploding to get places. It has a wacky, hilarious sense of humour and the main character is just adorably insane.

The funniest part so far was when I went to check the controls. It has 'Splode' mapped to the four face buttons, yet gives you the option to remap any four of them anyway for the lulz. Haha.

The demo hasn't really convinced me.
I'm not sure about the demo shows, but the only thing I don't like so far is the fact that what you need to do isn't always immediately obvious, and a lot of it is trial & error. As an example, the first boss took me a good 20mins to work out, as it did for others according to my friends leaderboard. Apart from that, it needs some more puzzle elements and a little less reflex testing.

I just played the boss level (1-15 or so I think), and the lag was so bads the missiles were stuttering in the air, and my bro's splosionman was hovering in the air above the platform. Eventually we got disconnected from him, and then we rejoined with another friend as host, then had no problems.

@Shorty: When did that go up? Wierd. Also weird: you have to use the dpad and not the stick to move the menu cursor. ACK. And why no control config at all? Needs to be faster acceleration on the right stick, and the bumpers to switch weapons. Idiots.

Yeah, they could probably use some tweaking but I found they were okay for what I needed to do in this game. The mechanics are relatively simple anyway and apart from missing a map function (which was in the iPhone version of the game), it was pretty much Wolf3D as I expected it.

Sounds like we pretty much had the same experience. First few levels were great, followed by some pretty awful lag which made timing jumps etc rather frustrating.

I quite liked the demo. Though the hard mode isn't very hard :(. Once you make a few retarded shot selections and learn from them it gets quite easy. Taking wickets on the other hand and knowing where the hell you can bowl and not get smacked for 4 is anotehr thing.

It's either the campaign and 7 new maps for 1200 (Dark Corners collection), or every bit of dlc released for Gears 2 for 1600 (All Fronts collection).

I'll most likely pick up MvC2 instead. It's the last 2d fighter I got into in my arcade days

Brilliant!!!

Gears 2 DLC sounds interesting too. Always wanted to play more MP of that. Only ever gotten into a couple of Horde matches.

Unfortunately not :( (I'd probably like to do that, I get bored with Gears multi).

It's either the campaign and 7 new maps for 1200 (Dark Corners collection), or every bit of dlc released for Gears 2 for 1600 (All Fronts collection).

The new chapter is called Road to Ruin and theres a good bit of info on it in this Eurogamer hands-on. (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/gears-of-war-2-road-to-ruin-hands-on)

The All Fronts collection sounds like a pretty good deal considering that I've picked up none of the DLC, so far.

Also, this may have limited interest factor for most forumers, but there should be a demo for IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey up on Live tonight as well.

I loves me some WW2 (and WW1) flight sim action, so am definitely keen to give it a go and see how she handles....
The game looks nice (especially the detail they put into the terrain) and it has a few pretty cool features, such as the picture-in-picture view of the target you're firing on, but the controls seem all wrong. When you yaw to the left, the whole cockpit moves to the left as if the pilot's neck is made of jelly, then snaps back when you straighten out. Now I'm no Messerschmitt master, but I don't think this is an accurate representation of the G-forces a WW2 fighter would generate during such a relatively tame manoeuver. The lack of an option to tone it down coupled with the horrid FPS when you're tailing a plane and/or firing your guns make it a very difficult game to enjoy for me.

Gets a solid thumbs up for the visuals (FPS issues aside) and sound, but the gameplay lets it down imo.

I think i enjoyed 'Splosion Man more while it lasted. there is certainly much more to do in N+ and N+ is also much more likely to have controllers thrown at the wall but the personality of SM is always entertaining and the game is certainly hard but generally fair and lots of fun

I recommend both games very highly but 'Splosion man has "Cake" and "Donuts" so it wins just from that.
It is one very strange ending though oh and damn it is hard to try and finish a stage without killing (sorry "sploding") scientists.

I've heard varying reports about this kind of thing (such as Epic's battle with MS over DLC for Gears of War), but I've also seen free stuff like the Toy Soldiers pack for F.E.A.R. 2, all the free Burnout Paradise content or even the free Survival Mode pack for L4D so I don't know if it's standard policy.

Yeah, true. Still, I don't mind paying for it as I'm certain I'll get more than my money's worth from it.

And what kind of DLC is free on PSN?

I think the Burnout Paradise packs were free on PSN (possibly forcing MSofts hand and making the live stuff free?). Can someone clarify?

Also, I believe Epic released a big free DLC pack for UT3 on PSN (not 100% on that either though)

And did you get a haircut?

It also comes with a case and colour manual. Consumers should expect digital copies of such products to come at a cheaper price. Common sense would dictate that once you take the physical properties of the product out of the equation and remove the various retail/distribution channels, the product would be noticably cheaper.

Buying Xbox Live Arcade games need only cost you half the price if you can find a trusted friend to go halves with on a title.

Eg. Max signs in to Xbox Live on Sam's console and purchases the game. So the game is fully unlocked on Sam's console. Max can play the game on his console too but he has to sign in to Xbox Live foist.

I do the very same thing but we actually have two Xbox 360 consoles for LAN play.

Yeah, I'm not even sure why he bothers. No one is biting.

Has anyone else read about the latest twist with the Games on Demand service over here? Turns out that 6000MP listing for Mass Effect might not have been just a placeholder as speculated. Freakin' crazy.

Just read about it on Kotaku before. "You're paying twice the price because this way you don't have to get off your ass!"

jawsy

If it holds true, it is thoroughly insane. Twice the price, hours to d/l, can't re-sell, no manual...complete waste of time.

If I could download a game like Mass Effect for $29.95, I'd consider it a no-brainer.

But $99.95? It's not a new release, and you can buy it FAR cheaper at retail. No thanks.

FrozenSoul80
11-08-2009, 06:26 PM
It would make more sense for them to sell it at a reduced price. I can't see any benefit from Games On Demand apart from removing the need to put CDs in the tray, which is silly. If getting up to put a disk in the tray is an effort you should seriously reconsider your life choices.

Thraxas
11-08-2009, 06:37 PM

Wouldn't this service be in direct competition with retail? I hardly think Microsoft would want to rock any boats on that front, possibly why they aren't available at more competitive prices.. ?

I don't know. If they have any Steam-like sales every now and then I would be pleased to download some older games I missed out on.

Thing is, I can buy Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise off the Games on Demand (GoD? O_o) service for $69.95, or I can order a retail disc with a case and manual for $29.00 from Game.com.au.

Why would I pay $40 extra for a game that's just going to take up hard drive space?

Think it's finally time for me to change my account over to the Japanese marketplace.

Yeah, ****ed up, isn't it? I don't know who they're trying to kid at that price, I'm sure I only paid $80 for it at launch.

IMO the PSN PS1 store is no better, charging $10 USD for 12 year old games..

Yep. The whole Games On Demand thing is hilariously inept.

I'm all for digital content distribution, but setting prices so they don't compete with bricks-and-mortar retailers kind of defeats the purpose.

Citizen Erased

Plus at 4 to 6 gigs per game, the price should be less then those at the shops.

I'm just going to pretend that the Games on Demand service isn't really out of beta yet. I'll shelve that thought when it actually becomes worthwhile to get one of those games.

Has anyone purchased anything from GoD?? I have read on some other forums that the price on the 'blade' does not include GST. Someone purchased a game for $29.99, but the final price (on emailed reciept) came to $32.98 (so it's actually worse). So Mass Effect, in Effect, is $109.98. I think its a legal requirement to highlight on the price display page if the cost is GST inclusive/exclusive.?

The prices for both GoD games and Avatar items are a disgrace, obviously. Still, I nearly bought the lightsaber last night (and will no doubt do so when I'm drunk).

so, the god is ridiculous. the avatar props are pointless. the new rating system is of no real use, so, what was the update good for? alls it did was force me off live for 15 mins or so. i didnt care for the interuption at all.

One thing I think the Avatar Marketplace is good for is dealing with a wierd amount of spare points that they can't use anywhere else (loving my 80 point Lionhead shirt :p). I cannot see any non-moron buying a points card just to buy clothes.
