Having never listened to anything by Karnivool, or heard anything about them to be honest, I've been listening to their two albums Themata and Sound Awake while on the road today.
I've no idea how they're generally looked upon as a band, but despite wanting to be Tool/APC a liitle bit too much perhaps, they've got a really strong sound. It's good to listen to a rocking Aussie band with a bit of depth to their music.

W3btZhfqZKwI discovered something amazing about this song the other day: The first verse is in E, the second (after the chorus) in D and the third (instrum) is in C.
It's madness, and even moreso that they actually make it work!

That's...not really that amazing. Modulation is pretty standard fare.Modulation yes, but usually you have a repeating chorus which moves up a tone to avoid stagnation.
What this song does is it has the same verse progression but transposed down a whole tone. And what really makes it bizarre is that there's a chorus in E mixolydian (every time) in between each of the different-key-verses, meaning that the listener (unless they have perfect pitch) has no aural cues as to the transposition.
This makes me think they only did it to make it more interesting for themselves, which I find amazing. The song is pretty complicated already!

I don't take Opeth too seriously ftr.
The majority of what they've done is pretty boring, with a few awesome moments.
And Cobla I'm well aware of the convention of moving up a tone for cheesy "anthems" ftr... I'm pretty much just being picky. Now that I've actually listened to it, it's all extremely smooth, yet very interesting harmonically. I always try to write stuff like that. Not very often succesfully.
