Resurrected from the depths of vBulletin hell, the beast returns.

Instead of just posting what you're listening to, try and be a little more specific. Why are you listening to it? Which genre is it in? What makes it good or bad? Who would you recommend it to?

Embedding youtube videos is another really helpful way to spread your musical tastes around.

A typical youtube URL will looks like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34O_P-R-bsA

All you'll need to do is copy everything after the = sign in the youtube URL, and stick it in the middle of the tags. For example;

[yt =Miike Snow - Burial]34O_P-R-bsARemove the space between yt and =, and It'll show up something like this:

34O_P-R-bsA

Give it a try!

But okay, I'll play by the rules (for now):

Because I've been playing it non-stop on plastic drums for weeks now and everytime I just listen to it I get the urge to drum again. Plus I'm in the mood for repetitive thrash!

Cut That City-The Mars Volta

Checking out some of their earlier stuff. It sounds pretty much like their normal stuff so far, simpler and less crazy if anything. And Cedric's vocals sound slightly fcuked live. A pity, because he is an incredible singer.

That's the spirit!

I'm listening to 'You Can Always Count On Me' from the Broadway recording of the musical City Of Angels. I am doing this because I need to make a decision as to what musical we are going to do at school next year, and I am being an indecisive dickhead. It's a very hard thing to do. Lucy, SM, if you read this, advice would be welcome. :)

AArgh I wanted to pep that. Consider yourself pseudo-pepped. I was listening to their Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning at work last week for a bit of a change. Great stuff.

Currently playing is Smashing Pumpkins - 1979. This song features in GTA IV (on Liberty Rock Radio) and in Clerks 2. I found this out today when I got bored of playing GTA IV and watched Clerks 2.

I've been rotating through most of the Metallica albums while I run/ride at the Gym. I find I can lose myself while listening to it and I'll not pay attention to my running and so I can keep going longer. Orion is a great starter for me, but the low volume at the beginning can be annoying when I'm fully in the mood of the run.

Dream Theater - The Count of Tuscany

Speaking about the album generally, I was unimpressed after my first two passive listens because I didn't hear anything from the band that I hadn't heard before. After a few more listens - and after reminding myself that Octavarium was unimpressive and Systematic Chaos was disappointing - I have grown to quite like the album.

It's certainly nothing new but it is a rather triumphant return to the sound that the band has. It's got elements of all the preceeding albums, polished, and put on the shelf for fans who've been disappointed with the last few efforts. I might also add that given the epic length of most of the tracks, I'm amazed that they all manage to avoid appearing too... episodic. There are still clearly distinctions between soft and hard passages, but there's an inexplicable musical consistency that I think they really nailed with this album.

Overall, it's a strong reminder why I got in to the band in the first place.

Took me a while to find a youtube clip of it where the stereo mixing hasn't been screwed up.

This is another one of my favourite songs that has dual looping bass tracks, reverse cymbals and an epic dual guitar solo in the last half. This is the first album that Pink Floyd recorded on an 8 track iirc which is why there is so much texture.

It's best to listen to this with the volume turned right up so you can hear everything that's going on in it.

Karnivool come of age. My favourite song from the new album. I must commend them on exorcising the last of their nu-metal origins, and going on to create a monster. It was four years in the making. They readily admit that they have a dysfunctional songwriting process, but the perfectionism has paid off in spades here.
Sound Awake is the name, and you should all buy it. Support Australian music, and all that. Its a 80 minute monster of progressive heavy rock that is as ambitious as it is awe-inspiring.

The Black Eyed Peas kept this record off the top of the ARIA charts. I'm now plotting to get tickets to go see the BEP and chuck stuff at them.

Kinda stopped listening to these guys when I left Uni in '06, but this week Triple J have had their new album "Old Crows, Young Cardinals" as their feature album. Talk about a contrast in sound, they've done away with the screamo and become some sort of punk/hard rock band.

Either way, today I picked up the new album as it still has some good tunes, as well as a copy of their first album with this song.

Watching this clip also makes me want to watch The Warriors.

What Triple J played of Death Magnetic, put me off the album.

"My Apocalypse" is atrocious.

EDIT:

I'll elaborate to avoid the inevitable SB venom :D

They seem unable to write a coherent consistent tune anymore. Their songs are a patchwork of good ideas mixed with horrible ones, that generally have me sitting through shit to get to "the good bit". "The Day That Never Comes" was the first song I heard and it started off great, typical Metallica ballad, but the tempo shift midway really ruins the song. It broke the whole mood they had set up.

Plus Death Magnetic's drum mix was too loud.

I'm really enjoying 'Old Crows Young Cardinals' as well. That clip for 'Young Cardinals' is pretty cool, I like the nod to 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.

I agree with Lazlow regarding Death Magnetic. Furthermore, their were parts that sounded way too familiar, in a lazy unoriginal way. there is a song that sound like a carbon copy of 'Sad but True'. Couldn't get into the album at all and I tried multiple times.

Currently listening to Red Rider's new album, 'Drown in Colour'. I was a bit worried because 'Ordinary' didn't really grab me the first time I listened to it, but I am enjoying the album as much as I did 'Replica Replica'.

Venom?! Am I that harsh??

I really disliked Cyanide. I do see your point about a mishmash of good and bad ideas/tune in the album. Some of the "bad" parts of the song can be pretty bad - like the intro to Suicide and Redemption and a bit in the middle.

However I do think that overall the album is pretty good. It did take me a few listens to get into it tho. Give it another listen Laz.

This is their first video, from their second album. The song is called Oh, Brother.

Ty7Hm-mfOq8

These guys are a quintet from Perth, and they released their second album, Hollow Be My Name, in March. I cannot say I have heard anything like it at all before. It straddles so many genres, that You would struggle to name one that they could belong to. I love the three-way harmonies at the end. The album is brilliant as a listen-all-the-way-through epic, it has so many layers in the lyrics and insrumentation, that I'm still discovering new things, even after 100 plus listens.

Check out their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/eleventhhereacheslondon) to listen to more.

Over rated or not, I still love em.

I listened to it last night and left a rather angry status update on Facebook.

What has Muse become? Everything up until Absolution was fantastic....Black Holes was a bit of a disappointment but still had a few decent tracks. If the two new songs are anything to go by then the new album will be electro synth pop and some piano. The biggest sellouts since Kings Of Leon and Chris Cornell.

Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - The Swell Season

Every song on this sideproject of The Frames' Vocalist is devastatingly beautiful, reaches in and rips the heart from your chest. The female backup vocalist backs up his vocals brilliantly and the masterful violin, guitar and piano playing compliment them both so perfectly. If you love indie and are a fan of Art of Fighting & The Frames, you need to own this as its one of the all time greats.

Been a long time since I've genuinely enjoyed a vocal trance song. Normally the lyrics in the genre are vapid, nonsensical and pointless. Songs are often better off without them.

This is different. The emphasis is placed squarely on the dark, melancholic lyrics. The female vocalist is brilliant. The accompanying instrumental is brooding, bipolar, and compliments the vocals perfectly.

Hadn't really appreciated the album up to this point. I'm usually more inclined to stick on Medulla or Homogenic instead.

It's a very introspective, luxurious, uplifting album. It's as if she laid bare her soul, no-holds-barred, and made the kind of album that would stand as a complete testament to her life in a 56-minute snapshot. It's mesmerising and beautiful.

Which is what I thought too. Until I heard them. I can't impress upon you enough how full and rich and damn impressive they sound. And believe me, I'm no light weight Beatles fan. I've given Brand New's Daisy a good listen now.

It's not a great album, they have basically made something akin to Nirvana's Inutero with some wank thrown in, but it is enjoyable enough as a fan that it will get decent rotation fro me and I look forward to hearing some of the songs live.

Dream Theater - Panic Attack

Octavarium, as an album, doesn't really do anything for me at all, but Panic Attack is still a pretty cool song.

New Burial from the 5 Years of Hyperdub comp.
That comp is going to be fantastic. Label must be a treasure trove for unreleased B. goodness.

I don't know how legit this is, but I stumbled across it a couple of months ago. Loving the potentially new direction --

What is the general opinion of the new Muse album?

I've heard it's pretty good from my friends, while I've heard others say that Muse has shamelessly borrowed from Queen and Radiohead (which means it must be ok, right?) and that it is nothing to get excited over.

It's Muse. Do you like Muse? If so, it's good.

Yeah, YT has a few unreleased Burial tracks that'll probably never see an official release. Still waiting for that Commix remix :(

Havent listened to them for a while but whilst Im typing I have Skunkhour's self titled album on and I must say its bringing back the flavour of the early 1990's back.

Dark Tranquility - The New Build

Have to say, not a big fan of Character, I just don't really think there's any memorable tracks on it (The New Build is alright though), just all sounds a bit samey (I mean, compared to Damage Done, where every track pretty much has it's own distinguishable 'sound').

Apparently the band is wrapping it up (or gonna stop playing) hope they come down for another gig or two. :(

To be fair they've been accused of that for years. One song on the new album is pretty much a Queen song remastered. They definitely didn't bother playing it down. And it works. It's a great album, there's some pop, harder stuff, and orchestral symphonies. There are only 2 tracks I dislike but they're slowly growing on me. Overall I love it :)
