Give Gallows Gallery a spin for something completely different, but still as cool. I haven't heard the remastered version though, but going from youtube vids of it, it sounds like they cleaned up the production a bit. Especially on The Tranquilizer Song, it sound like a whole new song.

Didn't even know Cradle were working a new album, but there it was in JB tonight, so I grabbed it. Just checked out the two reviews on metal archives and neither was overly negative with one calling it the best thing they had done since Midian, the other mentioning that the guitars are less chugging with more melodic leads about the place. So hopefully my optimism going in is not in vain. The cover art (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_thv7yS0MMN0/TG7x-i_YmoI/AAAAAAAAAPI/q3tgsbK_ONY/s1600/Darkly,+Darkly,+Venus+Aversa.jpg) does remind me a fair bit of Cruelty and the Beast.

Also grabbed Blind Guardian's "At the Edge of Time", as lately I've had "A Twist in the Myth" playing in my car non-stop for the last week, and I needed another BG album. This was all they had so hopefully it is decent too.

Been listening to Sigh and their album ''Imaginary Sonicscape'' it's a japanese black metal band, wow amazing stuff. Anyone else heard them?

Well you've blown your load too early, that's the best thing they've put out. Still, check out Hail Horror Hail and and Scenario IV, the 2 albums before IS, not quite as good, and sometimes very clunky, but still interesting. Infidel art is good, scorn defeat is.. well it's not really my thing. Gallows gallery is awesome, but very different.

And for the latest 2 albums, check out hangmans hymn first, I loved it, but I can see why others wouldn't, and if so you definately wouldn't like Scenes.

Sigh are probably my favorite metal band, can't recommend them enough, they're just a bit inconsistent.

That's their newest, IMO it is better than A Twist in the Myth, but not quite as epic as A Night at the Opera.

That new Cradle CD started off a bit underwhelming, but got pretty good around tracks 4-6. Yet to finish it, I listen to most of my CDs in the car these days.

Not as good as Ashes, but it is decent.

Machinae Supremacy's new album "A View From The End Of The World" is possibly my album of the year, I've been having trouble listening to much else for the last two weeks, it's basically some of the best (if somewhat nerdy) Power Metal i've ever heard.

Although I just got Anthelion's new EP, and sounds awesome from the first riff. Vocalist also does a scream that lasts for 21 seconds!~!~!!!1!

Yep, I f***ing love it too. Its more varied than ...Myth with a good mix of ballads, mid-paced epics, and fast catchy headbangers.

It's actually not bad. They're a pretty tight outfit and the drummer does some great work. It's a bit more refined and varied in sound than their last effort, and has definitely earned a few more listens. Palm muted, downtuned fifth chords are always welcome in my house.

Mate's band has released their 3 track EP on Roadrunner's website. Tell me what you think

Acacia (http://signmeto.roadrunnerrecords.com/artists/acacia)

Very Dimmu-ish Symphonic Black/Death. Second track is probably their most varied composition with a bit of female backing vocals and acoustic interludes.

They spent about $3-4k on production so its a step up from their rough Catamenia-clone myspace demos.

The Live DVD that comes with Surtur Rising is f***ing awesome, 33 tracks covering Golden Hall to Versus.

Speaking of Surtur Rising, it sounds like classic Amon Amarth, but there's something different. I don't know if its simply different song writing, or whether they tuned higher or wrote the album in a different key... it almost sounds upbeat.

Oh no no no, It's definitely better than Twilight. With Oden on Our Side or The Avenger is their best.
Wrath of the Norsemen is a great song.

Also new Guardians of Time... Waited 7 years for an album absolutely nothing like their masterpiece Machines of Mental Design. It's definitely not bad, but compared to Machines, it's nothing.

New Samael - Great
New Children of Bodom - Boring
New Norther - Boring
New Scar Symmetry - Great!

...wow. That last one's kinda alright, I guess; but damn, Morbid Angel have seen far better days.

Recently picked up new Amon Amarth, at ~$23 including the bonus DVD I'm pretty happy with it. It's built on a pretty solid base of typical Amon Amarth, but they seem to've stepped up the ante a bit harmonically with this one, not entirely leaning on safe stuff like aeolean tremolo passages or phrygian blasting as seem to be their mainstays. It feels like progress, I think. Slaves of Fear is built around a really cool riff.

Also picked up Vesania's Distractive Killusions, which is a few years old now. Interesting to finally hear the thing in whole, and there's a lot of cool stuff in here; but I've less patience these days for music that oscillates between awesome riffs and botched noise, and that's kinda where this is at.

I guess the other thing I bought into lately is Blind Guardian's latest, which, whilst perhaps shallower than ANATO, still kicks a lot of arse, especially in the middle. I'm hanging out for their tour here.

They really should just not try to get her to sing the operatic vocals. She simply can't. She does fine when she's doing her own thing, but I guess I was never a big fan of Tarja anyway. There are way better female vocalists than both of them. I guess I mainly like Nightwish for Toumas' writing and Marco in general. Marco shits all over both of the ladies, especially live.

I dunno, there's some catchy riffs and choruses, and Anders isn't sounding so much like Jonathan Davis these days.

Give me Sharon den Adel or Liv Kristine or Floor Jansen any day. Or Simone Simons - yum.

Don't think you can really compare Tarja to them. Stylistically she's very different, and technically runs rings around them. Simone Simmons cites Tarja as the reason she studied classical music.

Sharon, Floor and Simone are all fantastic but are somewhat stylistically different.

Liv Kristine though... I think she's the weakest of that lot. No power, limited range, she's greatly helped on record by layering her vocals.

Picked up Demonaz's new solo album today. A great blend of Immortal's texture with Bathtory's song writing. I think I like it more than I.

Also, Jon Davis would be a great front man to a band that was actually good.... assuming he cut the whiny stuff down/out.

And unfortunately that was the stuff Anders was aping :(

Better = I like more. Better in my opinion, I guess. I'm in no way qualified to discuss technical prowess of any vocalists.

Purchased my Blind Guardian ticket! :D

Would I be right in assuming I'm the only one on here going to the Sydney show? :p

You bellbottom wearing long hair prog heads will probably love this. Me, I hate it. (http://stereogum.com/766792/opeth-the-devils-orchard-stereogum-premiere/franchises/haunting-the-chapel/)

Disappointed with Opeth's and Devin Townsend's new albums. :(

I remember reading an interview with Akerfeldt prior to Damnation/Deliverance or Ghost Reveries where he hoped that one day they'd make an absolute turkey of an album.

Guess they've finally done it.

Loved them last time I saw them.. and looking forward to Sunday & Monday nights.

Did you check out the support bands? I love Eyefear & Black Majesty, always interesting to hear others' thoughts.

Seeing Be'lakor tonight, their only show of 2011. Can't wait!

I considered making the trip down to Melbourne to see BG as Melbourne crowds always seem better (Not that last night was disappointing), but the usual problem of money prevented it. :p

I did catch both Eyefear and Black Majesty, pretty impressed by their performances. Very tight. Musically it grabbed my attention, may have to give some of their studio stuff a listen. Eyefear's volcalists' hair is ridiculous in an awesome kind of way. :D

Just got back from Blind Guardian. Show was great. CBF details. Black Majesty & Eyefear were as good as always. Blind Guardian blew me away as much as last time and more.

Can't wait for tomorrow night!

Also, Be'lakor & Orpheus were excellent. Both highly recommended local melo-death. :D

Fantastic three days.

Be'lakor and Orpheus both great.

Black Majesty and Eyefear both excellent, as expected. Nice that they switched up the opening order on the second night.

Blind Guardian were amazing both nights. The sets were different, bar around four songs, which was fantastic. Great mix of both new and old stuff, and new songs like Sacred and Wheel of Time were ****ing amazing live. Super glad I sprung for the two tickets.

Just finished giving Insomnium's new album a whirl... Pretty ****ing wicked! :D But I am a bit of a fanboy. :p

Clean vocals are present again which I don't have a problem with. At the moment I'd probably rate it about equal with The Day It All Came Down (My No.1 album)... Definitely gets a thumbs up from me, but what would I know? :)

Not sure if you guys like this sort of metal or not, but someone might. A few friends of mine have just got this video done for one of their songs.

So i picked up the new Dragonforce album on Thursday.

****ing awesome album. It's more like Valley of the Damned and Sonic Firestorm, just down the line, meat & potatoes power metal played at near light speed.

And I'd have to say Marc Hudson is a better singer than ZP Theart. Such a range, so dynamic.

Went and saw Darkest Hour play in Melbourne last night. Glad I went, it was great to see them live.
