Listening to some classic Black Metal;
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger
Darktrhone - Panzerfaust
Burzum - Filosofem
Satyricon - The Shadowthrone
Also picked up Mayhem - Life Eternal, its basically a 5 track pre-release cut of Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Attila essentially got nothing for his involvement on the album except a pre-release 5 track mix of his early vocal recording sessions. It features Varg's original basslines (which were mixed way down in the final release) a different drum intro for Funeral Fog and some different vocal work.
Its not terribly different from the original album, but its sounds a shit tonne better.

Just figured out before that HammerFall reference George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series a lot. Cool.
Bought Amorphis' new CD off eBay the other day. Hasn't arrived yet so I hope it's good. Silent Waters was awesome. Also got Eluveitie's latest two as well.

Second point: It's pretty good, but not the same level as Silent Waters. Also, the digipak released has a couple of tracks that are borked slightly.

Borked? As in messed up?
With the HammerFall stuff, I'd just noticed some of the titles on Chapter IV more than anything else (Fury of the Wild, Dark Wings Dark Words, Take the Black, and the album name) , and that Oscar is a GRRM fan. Reading the lyrics though, they didn't seem to be about the books. On closer inspection, they're just full of metaphors and stuff but seem to be about situations in the books.
BTW Eluveitie is actually good music for reading the Song of Ice and Fire books. :p

Their new record, Crack The Skye, is pretty fantastic, too.
I've mostly been listening to Mastodon and Cult of Luna lately. I got a really nice new set of headphones the other day that really bring out those records. (They also do wonders for Venom records.)
Has anyone here heard of Striborg? He is, to quote Wikipedia, an "ambient black metal artist from Tasmania".
I... never really posted in the metal thread last time around, but I do listen to it a fair bit (in amongst all the other stuff I listen to), and I'm always interested to hear new stuff (mostly in the prog metal style, stuff like Cult of Luna, Isis, Pelican, etc.)

Something went wrong when creating the digipack, so a couple of songs are a bit staticy.
Re: Hammerfall, there's a lyric in one song (Fury of the Wild, I think) "Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken" - straight from the books. Man, I wish George RR Martin would finish the damn series already so I can get closure.

On the topic of Eluveitie, their new album devastated me. When I was told the metal was ripped out of the Folk Metal...
Another metal band with a potentially amazing future cut short. At least I have Slania.
Given new Korpiklaani and November's Doom a couple of listens now, both are definitely solid albums, but nothing mindblowing.
Expecting albums from Wintersun, Satariel, Persuader, Skyfire, Thunderstone and Insomnium soon, along with heaps of others I can't remember right now.
Anyone heard Preternatural? Very interesting band, their vocalist sounds similar to Ihsahn, so they're kinda like a melodic death Emperor at times.

Well, after listening to some (more) Amon Amarth recently I can safely say that I agree with Lazlow. They sound like a pretty standard metal band to me, one who certainly don't need bullshit made-up sub-genres to describe their music.

They are Viking themed Melodic Death Metal. Simple.
I heard that too Laz, which is why im hoping they re-recruit Daniel, unlikely though, since he seems like a bit of an idiot (breaking up his own band he left LH for?! wut)

Gah, they're not like Arch Enemy or Dark Tranquillity or In Flames, all of whom draw more from Malmsteen (and therefore Paganini, indirectly). Harmonically Amon Amarth harkens back to the non-BM Bathory releases, or to some of DoomSword's recordings, or to Folk Metal of the likes of Ensiferum; rhythmically, closer to aforementioned Bathory, and even further away from Melodeath.
But this is going to turn into an attempt to "classify" bands again, which is not the shit what genres are for.

Also, the first Lord of the Rings soundtrack is STILL officially excellent; say what you like about Enya but if her honey pot is anything like her voice then pass me a handitowel and I'll get straight down to work.... *nom-nom-nom*

Also got to see Bring me the Horizon, August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage, Seven Dust, Limp Bizkit, Metallica, Disturbed, Machine Head, Nine Inch Nails, Static X, Lacuna Coil, Chris Cornell, Slipknot, Black Stone Cherry, Caliban, Guano Apes....shit just check the Nova Rock Site. oh yeah and Dimmu Borgir.

Bought quite a bit this last week:
Mastodon - Crack the Skye (****ing awesome! Really strange concept)
Static-X - Cult of Static (Much more impressive than their last few)
Eluveitie - Slania
Eluveitie - Evocation 1
HammerFall - No Sacrifice, No Victory
HammerFall - Glory to the Brave
Amorphis - Skyforger
Haven't even listened to them all yet. I'm really liking HammerFall's new one. A bit different, mostly due to another lineup change. Pontus Norgren brings a bit more of a hard rock feel to the band, kinda fresh and cool.

Just remembered something I was going to post before the great fire;
I bought Necrophagist's Epitaph blind, having never heard anything by them... except for possibly some dude doing a guitar cover on youtube. With a few people contanty mentioning them, I thought I'd check it out.
I wish I hadn't.
Its like listening to a guitar world instructional CD; its as premeditated and manufactured as any pop album... even to the point one song shoe-horns in the intro from Fur Elise, much akin to the Pussycat Dolls' recent effort shoe-horning in a verse & chorus from Aretha Franklin's "I Will Survive".
It lacks everything I look for in music; feeling. Its cold and clinical in all the wrong ways.
Ultimately; boring as f***.
At least Totman/Li have a sense of fun with their guitar wankery.

Well I know Necrophagist is supposed to feel cold, dunno about clinical.

Similes, basically "lacking emotion"
I feel nothing from this music. No elation, no rage, no sadness, no fist pumping "f*** yeah" awesomeness. Its as analytical as a quadratic equation and about is exciting as one.
To be fair, I could probably handle one song, "Stabwound". Short and sweet. But longer songs back to back are a journey into the mundane.
I also find the vocals completely redundant. They'd be better served sticking to purely instrumental work.

I have to agree with this, although I do also quite like the start of Epitaph. I have their other album from all the stuff Cyan gave me, and I haven't heard anything interesting from it.
I have the same complaints for most 'straight' death metal bands, another example is Aeon. Their death metal is boring as hell, but their Country version of their song "God Gives Head In Heaven" is incredible.
Too often they aim for brutal, and forget the interesting.
Other genres do this too, but I think its most common to Death Metal.

It still hurts me inside how most fins shrug their shoulders in "meh" with Ensiferium, Korpiklaani, Amorphis or someone like that are playing somewhere...

That's pretty awesome (for them) how these bands can get big record deals and still gig like a local act. Then again, you probably make decent money playing at Finnish venues...
Speaking of Finnish venues, have you been to a place called the Rockturant (sp?)? I hear the lead singer of Lordi is a part-owner.

Lordi's resturant is in Rovaniemi, which is WAAAYYYYY up north inside the acrtic circle. A piss ant little town in the middle of nowhere. Maybe 900km from the coast, where i live.
Although ive always wanted to go to the place. Im a chef, and i LOVE theme resturants.... I went to the most awesome pirate resturant in Estonia once... God damn that rocked.
Oh, a quick google as to why they would put a resturant in Rovaniemi reveals the band members are from there.... Makes sense.

So i went and saw Insomnium last night as well as a heap of other lesser known bands.
I really only came for insomnium, and spent most of my time socialising.
However one band caught my ear, which was "At Dawn They Sleep". Pretty decent stuff. Apparently they hadnt done anything since 2001 and then decided to reform and play. Entertaining.
Anyhow, onto the Insomnomnomnomnomnium.
Front row and packed full of awesome.
They played like gods. Thight as hell, and really getting into it. Jumping around, working the croud and some of the most intense moshing i have ever seen a band do..... Like the lead guitarist.... he was full body moshing so hard i was worried he was going to snap his spine!
They played a god like set for about 1.5 hours. With 2 tracks from the new album.
Opened with "The Gale" (obviously) and tore through some of their best tracks.
I think my favorite was "Drawn to Black". The croud was fist pumping so hard the barrier was moving forward.
Anyhow, after the show my girlfriends cousin happens to be good friends with members of that band i mentioned before "At dawn they sleep".
So..... Cyan went backstage ;D
AND WENT DRINKING WITH INSOMNIUM LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I felt like that for a while, especially when it came to metal. Then I started listening to music my friends listened to, mostly Indie/Alternative stuff and got quite into some of that. Now when I pick up new metal bands, I get excited again, and my old stuff sounds better. That isn't a knock against those other genres, some of the new stuff I've been listening to I really love.
I think they key was I oversaturated my listening with nothing BUT metal, and so nothing seemed exciting before. Listening to a broader range of music, I don't get bored or anything, and I really appreciate metal when I listen to it, as it's still my favourite kind of music. It's just not the ONLY kind anymore.
That said, I've been listening to Sabaton recently cause a friend reccomended it. The songs are....hilarious, and bad but unfortunately not hilariously bad, so I don't think I'll be listening to them for long :P

I have to be honest with you, I felt this way a while ago. Maybe not so much with metal, but I definitely got sick of hard rock and punk and those sorts of things.
Then I started seeing some local bands and it really rekindled my love of those genres. Everything sounded so raw, so passionate, and somehow struck a balance between familiar and fresh.
So my advice is, if the major label bands are sounding too samey to you, check out your local music venue and see what they're playing there. You may be pleasantly surprised.
As far as major label goes, I've been listening to tons of Running Wild lately, and while they're not the most original band out there, they never fail to entertain IMO. I'd also like to recommend Equilibrium and Wolfchant in the off chance that they are actually original and don't just seem original to me because I'm not familiar with that genre. :p

In 2009, group members ICS Vortex and Mustis announced their exit from the band. The reasons of the split are rumoured to be due to "years of arguing" however Dimmu Borgir are due to make another announcement on the matter soon. [4] Keyboard player Mustis released the following statement,
Attention to all the worldwide fans of my work with Dimmu Borgir: I feel that I must begin my note to you all by saying that your dedication and interest in my musical work with Dimmu Borgir has been greatly appreciated by me for many, many years and you all have motivated me to continue to push the creative envelope farther each and every day. “You might be able to see where this note is heading and if you are thinking correctly you will know that I am informing you all that I am no longer associated with the band and have left the ranks of Dimmu Borgir effective immediately. “My departure was not entirely of my own accord and while I had felt this change was something imminent for my future, my time had been spent addressing the fact that many songs written by me had not been registered properly under my name in their credits. Without naming every single track, let us just say that a good majority of albums like ‘Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia’ and ‘In Sorte Diaobli’ would have been vastly different had I not composed and created as much as I actually did. Sadly, based on terrible gaps in the communication process and a failure to find logical rationale for why this had been done this way found me hitting wall after wall as opposed to finding a professional and reasonable solution to the problem. My inquiries and investigation into the issues which I wished to resolve and move on from would in the end find me being fired from the group. No discussions about it, just ‘goodbye’ (via text message). “I can say to you that this was not a new dispute and is something that has been going on for some years and since these are my individual creative rights and work that are being denied of me, we shall now let the resolution come from the lawyers instead of dealing with more dishonesty and lies on a one-on-one personal level. On this I cannot say anymore because we will be walking into sticky legal territory. “I mentioned earlier that my fans have motivated me to create great music again and again and they should know that I will continue to do this and shall return to them in the not-too-distant future with material that I hope will keep their metal needs fed. “In advance, I will say that I thank you for notes and texts of support and ask that you please understand that there is not much more I can say on this, nor will be able to answer every single message that I get. I ask you to please keep tabs on my official MySpace page. I will do my best to post what I am legally allowed to share with you so you remain informed.[5]
The following was released by Dimmu Borgir on their website a short time after Mustis',
We regret to inform you that we have parted ways with both Vortex and Mustis. However, we do want to make it perfectly clear that the creative force in the band is highly intact, perhaps even more so than ever. With that being said, we’re currently working on our next album and are excited to start a new chapter in the legacy that is Dimmu Borgir.[6]
The day after, in reply to fan response, Dimmu Borgir stated on their website that the two members were dismissed because of personal and professional differences, citing in particular the dismissed members' caring more for personal profit than the well-being of the band,
Now, auctioning off your band's most recent album on eBay, only signed by yourself, can't be looked upon in any other ways as pure greed, not to mention mockery, towards the rest of the members of the band that you're still in, AND the fans. Attempting to sell a CD of the last album (which you can still get hold of in shops) with only your signature on it for the highest bid is a remarkably low act. ... You threaten to sue your fellow band members for neglect and not treating you right monetary wise. Isn't it typical? You both want to harvest the fruits, but putting labour into it yourself is not so important. See how long that'll last in real life. Ironically, it lasted this long with the band, finally now that time is over.[7]
Mustis was a massive creative force in the band as far as the synth work went, and Simen's voice is unparalled. Will be interesting to see where they go from here.

As in Dimmu, or Mustis and Simen? Whilst not really enthusiastic about either, wouldn't surprise me if Dimmu become increasingly mediocre. If Mustis and Simen were to start a project together, that might be interesting.

Righto... Try:
Blind Guardian - everyone loves BG
More Nightwish
Within Temptation - similar to Nightwish, but slightly less heavy and sophisticated, but Sharon has a beautiful voice
Leaves' Eyes - Again, Liv has a beautiful voice, great atmosphere to the sound
After Forever - some harsh vocals with Floor's voice being the standout (best female voice in metal), faster songs than the others, with some great melodies
Rhapsody - if you like orchestral layers to tracks, check them out - some great compositions. Cheesy to the max though.
Check out the later works of most of those bands, since they get better imo as they go (though Rhapsody deteriorate somewhat). If I think of more, I'll post later.

Picked up 3 Inches of Blood - Here Waits Thy Doom today.
This is a very retro album from the band's stripped back and simplified sound, to the analog sounding production. Gone are a lot of the rabid drumming and frenetic riffs that were littered through Fire Up The Blades, Here Waits Thy Doom is like a marriage between Priest, Maiden, Manowar and Saxon. Meat and potatoes melodic metal.
Gone are also Jamie Hooper's hardcore screams, having damaged his vocal chords prior to Ozzfest '07, he sat out most of 07/08 with guitarist Justin Hagberg filling in. Jamie eventually recovered but never reclaimed his spot in the lineup. 3ioB now doesn't have a single founding member left in the lineup - though Cam Pipes has appeared on all their releases.
Only 4 songs in, and so far I can say its as good as anything they've done, but also rather different. Opinion will be divided over the change in sound, I'm really indifferent as I'm enjoying it just the same.

It's true. Equilibrium in general are a common topic of conversation. They're a fantastic band, I just wish they'd get to releasing more albums!
As I mentioned over MSN, I reckon the main thing with Dethalbum II is that unlike season 1, we didn't watch season 2 over and over and over again, so we don't know the songs in and out, back to front. The ones I did know well prior to hearing the album I think are fantastic. The vocals are generally easier to understand in the show's versions of the songs too, so when we hear the album we knew what he was singing about straight away... chances are most of it is comedy gold! The musicianship has definitely taken a step up though.
Edit: Hadn't heard that Tyr song before, Laz, it's pretty class. Going to have to get the album!

Slayer/Megadeth were good, though I would have preferred to be in standing rather than seats, but whatever. Megadeth, I dunno, Dave Mustaine's vocals just sound tired and were getting completely drowned out by the music. Maybe that was just Challenge Stadium being a shitty venue, I dunno.
Slayer were ****ing awesome though. It felt like your body was just being pounded by a wall of sound, and the vocalist was easily audible (so I don't think it was the venue) and ****ing intense. Slayer just went so much harder than Megadeth. Also they had FIRE.

Strangely, pretty much every report I've read so far of the gig in other states has said that Slayer were boring, and it just felt 'tired', whereas Megadeth were absolutely amazing. That could be in part to Araya's health issue though. After having seen Megadeth about 4 times now, though, I'd say their WA performance would be at least partially due to acoustics or mixing.. they've been very good every time I've seen them.
Kind of wish I went now, they apparently played quite a good set!

Who were you! I wore my blackguard shirt and stood around in various places.
So you were the guy in the Blackguard shirt! I had an Ozzy Osbourne (Black Rain cover) t-shirt and an ankle-length jacket. The two guys I was with were wearing Iron Maiden and Cannibal Corpse t-shirts respectively. And I'm starting to think that we were right next to each other all night and didn't even know it! :p
Speaking of Pathogen, I just finished listening to Remnants. The intro (144,000) is pretty good, the two songs they played on the night (Reverence and Severed And Frayed) are f'ing excellent, Swansong is an acoustic instrumental which is not what you'd expect but still very good, and Anything, Anything... well, it's not bad, but it's so mainstream! It sounds like a Bullet For My Valentine song without the singing bits. Overall, if you ever liked Pathogen it's an obvious must-buy.

By good, do we mean typical Pathogen good, or holy-frick-Pathogen-have-improved-recently-and-are-now-mind-blowing good?
The EP is typical Pathogen good, imo. But their stuff live was mind blowingly good =P
Also, Mr_M, I remember the jacket, but not what you look like =P

Nearly through the first listening of the new Nile album, and its really just more of the same. Better than Iphytallic, but nothing terribly different. I'll still prefer Annihilation of the Wicked probably because it was the first Nile album I heard. Nothing on Those Whome the Gods Detest comes close to Lashed to the Slave Stick, or Cast Down the Heretic.
Also, first song from the new Fear Factory.

Whilst its kinda shit out they just outed two established members like Herrera and Wolbers, Dino is simply a better guitarist for this band, and Hoglan is a better drummer overall. This song is very promising, very reminiscent of Obsolete/Demanufacture material.

I just discovered that this song is a cover of a song done by an American pop/punk band called Dramarama.
Goddamn =/
FF are back? Interesting. Dino makes Fear Factory awesome, and Hoglan? oh my!

Yeah earlier this year Burton/Dino/Stroud/Hoglan annouced a new project... later it was learned this project was a "reorganized" Fear Factory. There's apparently a legal battle over the name between burton/dino and wolbers/herrera as its apparently jointly owned... or some shit.

Ah, so it's a cover? At least they're not going soft on us then. :p
