Hyperactive Forums have a strict policy in relation to discussion of piracy/warez/downloading and so on. We don't support it and we don't want discussion of it on this forum board. But, as your moderators have pointed out in their discussion, implementing this policy has been troublesome at times and they've often been put in the position of 'assuming guilt' in relation to some matters.
We at Hyperactive are concerned about this. We'd like to assume that our forum members are honest until and unless it becomes apparent that the situation is otherwise. Accordingly, we've revised the approach we insist your moderators take, and this will be effective from now on.
File-sharing and Copy Protection Avoidance
Our policy toward this remains unchanged. Any help with file-sharing software or copy protection technology avoidance is strictly forbidden. There are other websites you can visit where such assistance is permitted, and you should use those.
Discussion of Legal and Moral Issues
Until now your moderators have deemed that 'mature and responsible discussion' of legal and moral issues related to file-sharing and copy protection are permitted. This will continue, but remember that it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to ensure that your contributions really are 'mature and responsible'. We are completely opposed to piracy and the promotion of piracy, and expect that members of our forum community will respect and support that stance. If your comments are simply tired old one-liners about "Everyone downloads" or "Software/movies/music costs too much and people have to download it" or similar then we don't want to hear them. Piracy is NOT okay!
Discussion of Software/Games/Movies/Music
We have changed our approach to this area of discussion considerably. Until now we've advised moderators to be watchful for topics which appear to be discussing pirated goods. Unfortunately, this approach assumes 'guilt' when the topic of discussion is about something not yet released in Australia. We don't assume that our forum members are pirates and liars. We certainly don't want the way our forum operates to make it seem that we do.
If a topic is about a Game, Movie, or other copyright work we assume that you have obtained it legitimately. Releases dates differ in various places around the world, people travel or have friends who travel, some people purchase goods from overseas via the internet.
We do not want to see the "Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, where'd you get it?" or the "I *acquired* it" type comments at all, and should you post such comments you can expect to attract the attention of your moderators. These comments strongly imply an illegal download was involved and encourages piracy even if that is not the case.
If your forum posts include detailed information about products not yet released anywhere in the world you can expect that your moderators (or magazine staff) will want to be convinced that you have legitimate access to it.
It is up to you to make this revised policy work. Please be sensible in your approach to posting here.
