So, chances are you've already got this issue, considering that it's been on sale for over a week now. If not, then you're in for a massive E3 roundup that covers 60 games, 25 reviews -- including Ghostbusters, The Sims 3, and Prototype -- and a roundup of tech gear from the world of tomorrow.
Hey, did someone say the forums were back?

Oh, and my favourite part of this months mag was the preview for Scribblenauts. I got so excited that I finally decided to buy my first DS. It's a DSi fresh from the fields of ebay and it will arrive spooner or later.

As I have said in other avenues of contact, the magazine misspelled "futanari" as "funatari". As a great lover and advocate of dickgirls, I was deeply offended by this error.
But yes, it's always good when the mag gets a lot of reviews in, and most of the E3 previews were pretty interesting to read (although the font type you used for the game names kinda shit me, I couldn't read half of them >_<)
Yeah, that font sent my brain into spasms as well. If that's the font of the future, then I'm staying right here.
Pretty good issue though. And was that Ruda shaking Manny's hand in the Call of Juarez thing?

I enjoyed the previews and analysis of E3. However, the font that Malcolm choose for the E3 Games of the Future was so damn futuristic, I could barely read it at times.

It was actually Paul Simao, one of Ubisoft's PR guys.
I thought I would be the only one complaining about the font.
Also, I think Darren is addicted to the word shit. He used it in at least two different reviews!

Inflation is a bitch, my friend. GFC, and all...Sucks, but its Hyper. Its worth it.
Ah, I remember when Hyper was the princely sum of $4.95, which was 5c less than my weekly allowance, which was enough to also get a chocolate freckle from the deli...
Goddam, that makes me sound old.

I remember it like it was yesterday. My vocational outside of school activity tutor thingo person bought me a reward each week if I worked hard and studied diligently. She had bought me NMS the previous week, so was kinda stuck for what to get me this week. She bought me issue 13 of Hyper. It had spesh 3D Donkey Kong on the front! Donkey Kong Country!
Wow if there was ever a game to get an 10 year old excited, this was the one! I missed the next issue, but that was the last one I ever missed. Hyper has been with me, through thick and thin, from pixels and platformers to polygons and puckheads (XBL...) from my spry 10 year old ADHD self to the crochety old bastard of 25 you read today!

My first Hyper was in an Easter Show showbag that I got for the PCPP magazine in it.
It had a BMX XXX preview in it, including two pages of all the boobs in the game with the little Hyper arrow icons covering the nipples. Except a few if I remember correctly, the little arrows were off by a few mm.
Best magazine ever.

Ah yes, BMX XXX, now there was true innovation - raising the bar on high quality gaming for the common teenager and it sure put the likes of Valve, Capcom and Sega in their place, how dare they hope to compete with such greatness, such excellence in game design and use of naughty ladies of the night has never been paralled or equalled.
Truly a classic for the ages that will be discussed in academic circles for decades to come.

(That's technically not true: I was a paperboy when Hyper started, so I used to sit in the newsagency reading all the games magazines while my boss loaded my bike up with newspapers. It was only after I left the job that I started buying Hyper. The first issue that I bought had a shot from Quake on the cover.)

I think my first issue was one with a flaming basketball on it (NBA Jam)... or was it the one with the "virtual sex" article, and iirc, a cover involving two chrome coloured people in a vaguely erotic pose?
Anyhow! This issue! I enjoyed it, although I also found the E3 game title font to be annoying. Eleanor's [1] article was an interesting read as always.

I told Jickle his exorbitant pay-rise demands would put undue pressure on management, eventually leading to the price hike, then to a loss of readership and the subsequent demise of the magazine. All for an extra $50 a page too. Bastard.

Mind you, with some import mags, such as GamesTM, offering almost double the pages for the same price (albeit with reviews and news that are a few months behind), it's a thin razor to balance on. Actually, I really don't like GamesTM, but it's just an example of a similarly priced product (one that has about a thousand editors working for it, it seems).
How much are those Official mags these days? Like $15 or something? So Hyper are still sitting reasonably well price wise against the competition.

Honestly, I'd rather read Hyper a couple of months late than read an off-the-presses issue of GamesTm, irrespective of the difference in page count, which is how my living situation enforces things. I've never understood all of the awards that GTM wins, as I honestly find that it takes itself too seriously and forgets to be any fun. This is in spite of having a small army of Editors and sub-Editors. It honestly amazes me that the DW's manage of get Hyper out in the shape that they do every month; it generally knows what it's on about, and is entertaining to read, to boot.
$10? I'd pay it quite happily if I was living somewhere where this was an option - the UK's not really big on importing games mags, though, so I can't. That's not to say that I don't miss the days when it cost $6, but then, back then I could buy new games for $70-80 each.
Having managed to read some of the past issue, I gotta say that I don't think you'd be able to read anything like the Morality in Games feature - on that was well informed about its topic, but never failed to make me smile - in the ink of any other magazine. As for this issue, I have no idea! But within the lens of the competition, at least, I expect that it's more than worth it.

Lately I've been buying odd issues of Games TM as I find it a decent mag to read once I've finished with Hyper and Retro Gamer, plus it helps fill in when I run out of Empire and Film Ink. If it was a local mag, I'd get a sub for it seeing as I'm turning in to some sort of magazine junkie - but only decent mags. [EDIT: the local big newsagent has stopped getting edge, probably because all the bogans buy the official mags for the shitty demos etc, and plus they can't read]
IMO hyper is still good value for money, and I'd still buy it at twice the price. There is no local equivalent, and I'd NEVER touch the official mags, not even while riding a polar bear while holding a pointed stick with a banana sticky taped to the end of it. (after the bear eats the banana, you stab the stick through the offical mags and then BURN them to a fiery death). Sell you in hell official mags!

I too have noticed the lack ot typos in Games TM, but it's only worht getting here if you enjoy reading games mags, if you want current reviews - iP magazines are all about 3 months / 3 issues behind. I don't mind with RG seing as it's new content mostly about old games. But with Games TM it's like going back in time when I read the reviews of current stuff, so I mostly read the articles and opinion pieces.

I noticed that with the Henry Hatsworth review, the release date says "Now (via import)" and there's a little boxout explaining that the game isn't getting an Australian release. Games like this used to have a stamp or sub-heading or something that clearly said "Import review". Where did that go?
Also, what's with EA being massive pricks lately (in terns of distributing games)? First they screw us over with the Rock Band series, and now Henry Hatsworth?

It's pretty strange for a DS game like that not to get released. It's not like it's an obscure japanese rpg by a small company with reams of text to translate or anything. And it's not like the DS is selling poorly in Australia or anything.
I'd love to know what excuse it is this time.....
"We are busy making too much money, therefore we have no time to bring Henry Hatworth to Australia, and your country smells dead dingos".
Seriously though, do DW or DW have and insights on why it's not getting releaed? Or at least what are the likely reasons? Has no publisher picked it up, will it come out like in two years or something like other games?
Daniel
30-07-2009, 10:20 AM
We really have no idea why games are just not getting a release - we get some PR fluff occasionally telling us that by not bringing out as many games they can concentrate on supporting a smaller number and related crap, but usually when we ask the question is just ignored.

LOL. Nice one.
I totally understand that I can import games, but the large casual audience that uses the DS (people who are not obsessive game collecting freaks like me) are the ones likely to miss out on the games that don't get a local release. I mean I've ordered like 4 DS games in the last week alone from foreign sites, purely because they were cheaper.
I just think it's a damn shame when games don't reach their potential audience, but I guess it's inevitable with so many games coming out on every platform. But the DS has tons of shovelware, and Henry Hatsworth looked like an alright game.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the quality releases that DO make it to Australia compared to the dark days of the 90's, where so many good games didn't make it over the treacherous shark infested waters to convict land.

At first I i went "huh?" and thought you forgot to put anything in that post. But then I noticed the link to the blog. (http://rectangulareyes.wordpress.com/2009/07/13/this-prejudice-is-getting-out-of-hand/#more-42)Some fine points in there, and the sad part is CRAP SELLS, on the DS and every other format. Sure not all crap/shovelware sells well, but enough of it for companies to keep producing more of it.
And I really don't care. Let the kids play their stupid games, because eventually they'll get older and discover real games and truly appreciate them. Let the parents buy the crappy licensed products and inject more money into the games industry.
What I don't like however, is when (as stated in the blog) you go into stores and try to find the good games, and you find that the vast majority or worthless DS titles have taken over the shelf space. Unlike the Wii -which has some great games but not many - the DS has tons of decent games. It really is a bloody shame that decent games don't get released due to piss poor reasons.
When companies promote and release crap, it leads to more crap. Then other games "don't sell here" because they don't have a chance to. What a fun cycle. I don't expect it to change, and the amount of casual games on the Wii and DS that are rubbish, or copies of better games - reminds me of the Playstation 1 era, when Sony said "sure, release whatever the F*** you want on our console" which did lead to some interesting releases (and perhaps allowed a little more freedom for developers to try something different) but overall IMO it lead to too much shitty games that were not worth even worth looking at, let alone playing, and the words "quality control" were booted right out the door.
