So I've been playing this quite a bit since the fourth update came out, and I have to say it's improved by leaps and bounds since I first tried it. The balancing issues I encountered months ago are mostly gone, and while lag can still be an issue in some games, it's infrequent enough that I'm still having fun.
In any case, now that the game's playable online, I was wondering if anyone wanted to give the multiplayer a go. I'm quite a fan of the Submission game type myself, but I'll play just about anything.
Anyone feel like getting a regular party together and tearing it up online? My gamertag is: banjoeskimo

Yes, but hasn't multiplayer always been playable? Anyway, I'd be down for this. I've wanted to play more Horde mode for ages, but no-one seems to play it anymore.

Not really. At launch it was plagued with bugs and exploits (the most famous being meleeing through walls), and then the first and second updates suffered from crippling lag. The third update fixed most of the bugs, but the balancing was absolute shit (you'd often find yourself in a team of level 1 to 10s, facing off against a group of level 30 to 50s, so being a lower level player meant you were guaranteed to get reamed until you gained enough experience to be paired with players that didn't suck).

I still find the MP laggy and, well, boring. I'd much rather play Halo 3 or COD5. Horde however is a stroke of genius and I hope more games take the idea and put their own spin on it (ala Firefight).

Tried Horde mode with Shorty and Starscream the other night. Hoo-ah! Just had a great room with 4 other Aussies, got up to wave 10 without failure, then my router crapped itself and the room was lost. Spectacular fun though, I'll be doing that some more.

I seem to get Horde matches pretty easy, and I've always been put with Aussies as well. My only complaint is that once someone leaves, that spot is gone. The only way to fill it is to go back to the lobby and start again.

Horde matches are the easiest for anyone wanting to go online.
I find it easier to get into Death matches, etc on Gears 1 for some unknown reason.

Got into a mulitplayer death match last night pretty quickly. It's annoying how it kicks you back into the lobby once the match is over however.

Played a few games last night and it was awesome fun. The trick to get into games faster is to have a party before you start match making. Like out of the possible 5 slots - try to get 3 mates and then start looking for games.

If anyone feels like getting into some Horde I finally picked up the All Fronts pack; much better value than buying stuff individually. I was thinking we could try and get a full team of 5 together and really have a crack at it. Anyone else game?

You are a monster with that chainsaw. That was the best end to a Horde match I've ever seen.
(With four enemies left, Shorty and I both got shot down by the same Locust, who was actually a fairly low-level drone with a revolver. Starscream shot him down, and when the remaining three enemies came at him more or less at once he managed to, against all odds, chainsaw them all to death).

It seems that for this weekend every 10th wave is now nothin' but Sires. Should make it much, much easier to finish all 50 waves, if anyone can be bothered doing that. :p

It does (to some degree) help when matchmaking, but death matches are harder to get into especially if you have a low rank.
Better to start off in Horde mode.
Sire weekend was a blast.

You don't need the map-packs (they're relegated to seperate playlists anyway), the match-making just sucks. :p You'll probably get into a game eventually but expect a surprisingly long wait. Like Starscream said, playing some Horde (which is easier to get into and Hyper people still play fairly regularly) to boost your level helps a bit.

I think the more map packs you have, you might have a better chance of getting online multi player aside from Horde mode (on the assumption that everyone has played the old map packs to death and are playing the new ones, I've been kicked off for not having the new map packs).
I play Horde, Wingman but Warzone/Execution is tough to get into an online match.

One of the maps has an exploit for Horde mode making it easy to finish on any difficulty. There's a camping spot where you can pick everyone off and weapons spawn but you can't be hit.
It's really boring though so we didn't use it, the flat got through Wave 50 on a snowy level with a rooftop that has 2 ways up and a minigun/mortar in the middle.

That's the Avalanche map. Early waves you can play free for all Rambo style but when the Maulers, Boomers and Grinders all show up, you have to barricade your team in the roof spot just to survive. We usually play hardcore as well.
If this Gears 2 promo has Sire levels, rev up the chainsaw.

tactical mode: There's a tactical mode?!?
increased weapon damage and reduced ammo counts: Mad scramble for everyone to stock up on ammo in the early levels and the increased weapon damage compensates for this.
along with a few subtle tweaks: The horde actually dodge your attacks now.
Hasn't been too bad for matchmaking in Horde, quite easy/fast especially with this promo.

CELEBRATE THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS—GEARS-STYLE
This holiday, Epic Games has a special present for all you Gearheads out there… actually, 12 presents, along with a few other surprises as well! Beginning December 23, the Gears multiplayer experience will transform into the 12 Days of Gearsmas.
On the first day of Gearsmas, everyone gets a Noobsaw. This means that shots will not interrupt the Lancer’s Chainsaw. Once it gets revving, only a kill can stop it.
On the second day of Gearsmas, it’s time for some melee instagib. One attack will tear your enemy to shreds in the usual messy fashion, with no need to hit twice.
On the third day of Gearsmas, you’ll get three Frag Grenades for every pickup. Worried about saving that last grenade? Just throw it—you’ve got three of ‘em.
On the fourth day of Gearsmas, Boomshots rule the day. Four shots, more bang for your boom.
On the fifth day, Wingman converts to five one-man teams. Get ready for 1x1x1x1x1 action all day.
On the sixth day, you get six satellites powering the Hammer of Dawn. Think infinite ammo, Gears 1–style.
On the seventh day, each mortar gets seven shells instead of the typical three. Bombs away!
On the eighth day, it’s a blast from the past with eight retro gamers—four vs. four, in classic Gears action. (Note that Horde and Wingman won’t be affected by this change.)
On the ninth day, the Boomers invade Horde mode. You’ll get squads of Boomers on all waves ending in the number 9.
On the tenth day, you’ll get 10 waves of Kantus to spice up your Horde experience—if you can survive it, that is…
On the eleventh day, eleven meatflags will be taunting (Chaps + 10 players = 11!), so you can go ahead and add double experience to Submission matches.
And the twelfth day? How about all 11 modifications applied all at once? Get ready for total action-packed Gears mayhem!
If that wasn’t enough, there’s still one more surprise: Golden weapons will be unlocked for all 12 days, and the current double XP will convert to triple XP. And that means that Days 11 and 12 will be 6x XP in Submission. Chaps better get his running shoes on!

Anybody still playing this game? The matchmaking is atrocious and im struggling to find any games that arent wingman (Which to me is an absolutely terrible game mode). I heard it was easier to find a game if you have a few people with you at the start of the search.

Horde is the easiest mode for matchmaking.

Mmm but im sort of hunting for Achievements and the EXP gained from horde is nothing compared to what you can get form elsewhere. Oh well.

MP achievements are hard to get because of the matchmaking issues. As for XP, I usually wait for double or triple XP weekends for US holidays, etc.
They're currently having double XP weekend now because of St. Patricks Day.
Also, when they have double XP weekends and you quit (or drop out due to lag) during a MP match (not Horde mode IIRC) you lose one rank.
Might play some Gears 2 horde later tonight.
No idea how they could stuff up multiplayer matchmaking this badly. How is it this hard when the Halo matchmaking works so well. Just see what it does and emulate it.

Yeah ill be on there. Got 800,000 exp this event so far but that means im at now at 1,400,000. Still a long way to go to rank 100 but I figure there will be a lot of events just before gears 3 so I should hopefully be able to make it.

That was actually the result of users. One of the guys on the Gears team said he'd add a 1x multiplier for every 1000 followers he got on Twitter. It was so successful that it ran out of control in the course of a day or two and they had to cap the XP multiplier at 20.
Either way, I'll be on this weekend. Might as well get a new achievement or two out of it if they're giving away that much XP.
Never played online MP but if there's easy xp to be made I might as well jump in before gears 3

They fixed it for a week then made a server tweak that kicked the rest of the world out of the games so that the US players could be as lag free as possible.
But if you have friends playing you can still get in on games.

It used to be incredibly shit finding games, but they've since all but killed the lag, and if you just want to jump right into a game without matchmaking there's a new "Social" mode that populates all empty slots with bots. As more people find your game the bots are phased out with real players. Usually you have a full game of real players within 10-15 minutes, and in the meantime you get to slaughter bots.
I got turned off Gears multi initially and swore I'd never play it again, but I jumped in a few weeks back during an XP weekend and in total honesty they've pretty much fixed everything. Granted, it should have been that way from the get go, but if you haven't given it a shot this year it's well worth jumping back in.

Finished playing Gears 1 & 2 back to back in co-op with a friend, I didn't really think the Gears 2 campaign was anything special the first time around, but it is really, really good.
Graphics are pretty underrated too, IMO.
