View Full Version : The Valkyria Chronicles Thread

... because every PS3 forum should have a thread.

Anyway, I remember there being a small group of us obsessing over this game, is anyone still playing it? I'm yet to get the DLC, but I finally managed to A-rank the entire game and get all the decorations. Best 60 hours of my life I've spent on a strategy RPG.

Also! For fans of the original, you'll be glad to know that Valkyria Chronicles II is on the way, in the shape of a PSP sequel (http://kotaku.com/5314871/valkyria-chronicles-2-is-a-psp-game).

Still yet to get the DLC myself. Really need to get on to that.

I'm about ten hours into this so far. Really enjoying it.

My time is really getting eaten up by this, GTA IV, and Eternal Sonata

I got this while the forums were down so couldn't talk to you guys about it! I'm up the the Kloden Wildwood chapter - so far this game is pretty cool, maybe not as amazing as you guys have led me to believe but still pretty brilliant.

When Sylveria showed up on that mission with the gigantic tank and killed my Jann, I was very dissapointed

I intend to frequent this thread a lot so please tag spoilers ;)

It's still one of the top three best games released last year :D.

Haven't played it for a while however... Very excited for the PSP sequel. Hugely!

I've almost finished it for the second time now. I flew through the initial missions on my second run.

I'm 11 or so chapters in on my first playthrough now.

My scouts and engineers are elite rank (I wanted to find out what engis got and had just enough xp, turns out they get nothing - serves me right) and I'm up to the mission where you use smoke grenades to get your way up the beach with Zaka and his Shamrock in the main missions for the first time proper.

Really good game so far, the disney style values are a little bit annoying at times (and the Alicia Welkin awkwardness is predictable and ugh) but the gameplay is solid and enjoyable. I'm questioning how usefull the Shamrock will be, the flamethrower can be awesome sure but he still needs 2 points to move.

How many chapters are there out of interest, I dare not google for fear of spoilers, I look forward to my next run in with Sylveria (sp?) cos she was badass, tho she did kill my Jann.

Actually that raises my main issue with VC, in the mission with the super tank and Sylveria rocking up to save the day, she comes into the game and proceded to rape my entire army in one turn - of course I hadn't saved - and killed my precious transgender lancer :'( just felt like I didn't have a chance to react to her. I ended up using a full set of cp that I'd built up firing the Edelweiss at the exposed radiator for a turn to win the level.

18, not including the 5 bonus missions & DLC

She did the same thing to me too in that mission :p Raped 5 of my guys & killed 2 permanently since I had everyone all bunched together. That's the only mission I've encountered though where she gets to roam that much, on the other missions she's pretty restrictive or out of reach if you play sensible

Actually their grenade capacity is raised to 2 (or 3? I don't remember) and I'm pretty sure every class gets a slight upgrade to their movement meter, so it's in your best interests to level everyone evenly.

For reference...

-The game's level cap is 20 (worth hitting, especially for the last 2 chapters)

-There's 18 chapters, plus bonus missions, and some chapters have more than one map to play. Also, there are two DLC packs with a third on the way.

-The game has a New Game + mode, where you can take all your leveled classes / extra weapons through the entire campaign again and try to go for A ranks. So, if you don't hit 20 on your first run, you should hit it pretty early on in New Game +. Also, any characters that died on your first run will be revived, so you'll get Jann back eventually.

You still owe me pep for buying VC slashy :@

Hitting the level cap will be difficult by the end of the game, since I hate re-doing the later skirmishes cos they take so long. And I always get C or D ranks on my first playthrough of story missions (woops... :p)

I have decided that it is time for me to buy this, is their any difference between the US and EU copies of the game?

If you want the DLC you'll have to purchase it locally (pretty sure I've seen it for like ~$60-70 somewhere). If you don't want the DLC then there are no differences

Direct feed footage from the PSP sequel (http://kotaku.com/5357013/valkyria-chronicles-2-clips-go-into-battle).

Wish this was on the PS3, obviously, but it looks like a damn fine effort for a PSP game. Can't wait.

Yeah should be good, too bad not many people bought the first game to warrant a PS3 sequel :/

Just finished playing, easily one of the best games yet on ps3 (if you're into strategy), which surprised me because I really didn't care for it after playing the demo. Great gameplay, well told story, likable characters, it's been a while since all these things have come together in a videogame (for me anyway).

Nah, the devs did say that VC3 could still be considered for PS3. It's not like they abandoned the PS3, they just wanna test the PSP market.

Think I'm all Valkyria Chronicled out now to bother with anymore DLC. I've barely touched the first set of DLC, guess I'm not really a big fan of it. I'm compelled to but since I've actually finished the game I'm not encouraged & would much prefer a sequel

Shame I usually sell things before the more interesting stuff comes out. I've already done it with the PSOne & the PS2 & the N64 & now the PSP :( But the PSP only has that 1 exception
