Really though the RB3 tracklist sucks enormous dicks, and the tracklists are all I care about with music games.
Also I got over the novelty of the pro mode about a month after hearing about it.

If it wasn't for 2112 then Warriors of Rock would've had a horrible tracklist. World Tour horrible.
Harmonix were in an interesting position, some of those tracks are there to introduce people to keyboard.

At least Warriors Of Rock doesn't require you to shell out yet another $100 just to enjoy the tracklist to the full extent.
But to enjoy the full tracklist in WoR you have to sit through a ham-fisted narrative. These keyboard songs do have other parts to them.
Also, by that logic someone who doesn't have drums or a microphone has to fork out to enjoy WoR's tracklist to the full extent.

It's not really "expense" rather than this guitar track is easy. Which for most people isn't an issue.
AranchineD
26-10-2010, 10:10 PM
Difficulty is not the issue, rather, for example, people playing a single chord every two seconds for three minutes or so.
Unless people actually find that fun.

A lot of songs deliberately emphasise certain instruments so in a given playlist you're always going to have songs that are "easy" or "boring" for some instruments. It's unavoidable, really.

Found an interesting thing with my Band Hero drums playing this. If I hit the orange cymbol, the game registers a hit on the green pad. I'm assuming it's something to do with the pro mode of this game and, when you're not playing in pro mode, one of the extra cymbols corresponding to the green pad.
Housemate got RB3 yesterday...seems pretty solid but I've never been a huge fan of the music gane genre. The improvements to the menus are a welcome addition though.
Halt, Hammerzeit
27-10-2010, 12:03 PM
I love how easy it is for players to drop in and out now. I was playing and my housemate wanted in. Now instead of having to either finish or quit the song you're in and go out to the main menu to get another player in they can join mid song. Have to explore the career mode a bit more, but it looks like they've scaled it back a lot.
I've only been playing the 'My Goals' part of it so far, but it doesn't seem to have the epic feeling of previous RB career modes, there's a lot more sections to it, though. There's a section for each of the individual instruments, so I guess it's still pretty big and it's only because I've been playing the drums (waiting for my keyboard to come in) exclusively that I haven't looked at other sections.
I also like how when you're playing in a band it still gives you your individual score and star rating, not just the percentage you hit (although that's still there as well).
Overall, RB3 just seems to flow better than other RB games. Quite liking it so far, but am interested to try the pro mode and keyboard to see how it plays.

So, apparently song export for RB2 is working (http://www.gamedaily.com/games/rock-band-2/playstation-2/game-features/rock-band-3-how-to-import-rock-band-2-songs/), except that the code on the back of my manual is way too long for the code entry dialog.
Halt, Hammerzeit
27-10-2010, 01:58 PM
You don't enter the code in RB, you enter it into the 'Redeem Code' section of XBox Live. I did it this morning. Press the XBox button, go all the way to the left and select 'Redeem Code' (or something like that). Then you can enter the code.

Rang EB yesterday to see if I could get the code off the back of the manual and they read it out to me over the phone. Thank you EB. I've hear reports on the net that you can get another code from EA (don't know if there's a cost or not), but considering that all the code allows you to do it buy the downloaded tracks I don't think they'd be too concerned about giving you a new code.

I'm gonna give it a shot! I don't have RB2 but I would certainly love to import the songs into RB3 ;)
I imported my RB1 songs last night, currently sitting at around 210 songs.

My RB song collection is up over 1000 now I think. I've got RB1, Greenday, ACDC, soon to have RB2 and, of course RB3 songs, plus a shitload of DLC as well.

Halt, Hammerzeit
28-10-2010, 07:06 PM
I know there's 5 tracks from RB2 that won't come over to RB3, but I haven't heard anything about other tracks not coming across. One would think that if Harmonix negotiated for RB1 tracks to be used in RB2, they'd be smart enough to put in a clause that allows them to use RB1 songs in any future RB games. Same goes with the DLC.
StorminNorman
28-10-2010, 07:42 PM
There's more tracks from RB1 that won't export to RB3 (but were available in RB2). They are:
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California
Der Toten Hosen - Hier Kommt Alex
Oasis - Rock And Roll Star
The sting with Hier Kommt Alex and Rock And Roll Star is that they won't transfer even if you bought them as DLC (which is how they were available in the US).
These songs from Rockband 2 won't export into Rockband 3:
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
Journey - Any Way You Want It
Metallica - Battery
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away
Soundgarden - Spoonman
The nine "Harmonix" songs. Apparently these will be eventually be available as free DLC (presumably they're adding pro modes to them).
The annoying part with Give It Away is that it means you can no longer have the full Blood Sugar Sex Magik album if you bought that.
Got my RB2 export to work, finally. If you're getting the "Error exporting token" screen, then just keep retrying until it works.
EDIT: For completeness, here are the songs from RB1 that won't export into RB2 or RB3:
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (cover)
Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills (cover)
Tokio Hotel - Monsoon

FYI if anyone wants to download the RB2 tracks into RB3, but you don't have a code, simply go here (http://support.ea.com/chat) and tell them you lost the manual. Worked for me and you don't even need the RB2 disc! (It does cost 800 MS points though)
Also there's been a little confusion as to where you input the 16 char code. What you do is boot up RB3, then go Get More Songs -> Redeem Code
(Entering it into the XBL dashboard is futile)

Just got email notification that EB US has shipped my pro drums. Tracking information says that the scheduled delivery date is the 1st November. This just makes more of a mockery of the way the instruments are being handled in Australia. Why would anybody order the instruments from EB Aus for $300 when you can order them from the US for US$160 including postage (I think my credit card got charged about $170 Australian in the end) and get it delivered quicker than what EB Aus could get it delivered to their shop?

Turns out there's another problem with DLC where certain songs aren't currently working on the 360 version of RB3. They are:
Anvil - 666
Anvil - Metal on Metal
Anvil - This is Thirteen
Dinosaur Jr - Pick Me Up
Dinosaur Jr - The Wagon
Guess Who, The - Hand Me Down World
Guess Who, The - No Time
Tenacious D - Rock Your Socks
They work on PS3 though apparently, so I expect this will just get patched.

I ordered the pro drums from the US EB. The only thing I don't like about them is that if you order it with a non-US credit card they want you to fax a recent credit card statement to them. It would be nice if Pro mode had a demo option where you could just watch the music / tab as the song plays, even if you don't have that specific pro instrument.
Seems a bit stupid that I have to fork out $300 just for the game to show me what it already knows (ie. what the notes / chords / positions / tunings are).

I'm going to have to go back to normal hard (or maybe even medium) until I get used to where all the keys are. Got fed up with it in the end and picked up the pro drums again :P

So "Guitar Immortal" unlocks "Keys on Guitar", which is quite literally, playing the Keyboard track as Guitar. Still requiring strumming. Why even include that?
Probably to encourage people to pick up the keyboard, or "try before they buy" if they don't have it yet.

Doing the advance key technique now, pretty difficult, but I'll get there. I learnt drums from scratch to pro boredom, hopefully I'll get the same on keys.
I just can't be bothered playing the drums on rockband anymore, I just like the guitar hero layout heaps better. Actually hitting the cymbals rather then a circle note instead of a bar is much more fluent and less of a mind ****.
In saying that, I can't do pro drums until I can confirm the midi pro adapter works with my td-9 drum kit.

You mean for getting 1 million points in a single song? Easiest way to do that is with 4 or more players playing on expert. If you're all playing at least reasonably well and time your overdrive activation well so you get an 8x multiplier you'll get it in no time.
If you don't have 4 players available locally try hopping on XBL. Almost everyone playing online will be on expert and you should be able to get a full band without any trouble.

Any tips on the best place online to get Keyboard for 360?
I looked back a few pages and someone mentioned amazon, I'd already looked there and it said something like they were new for $150, not sure if that was Australian or not.
They are $140 from EB shops. I want to pay much much less than that! (the game cost me $60!)
Oh yeah, the software dropped to $60 at EB today. (on 360 at least, didn't look for other platforms.)

Also, I'm looking at the online store in Rock Band 3 and much confusion:
What are Rock Band Network songs and why are they all "currently unavailable"?
How exactly does it work where you can (?) use songs from the the previous game's discs? If you don't have the discs, are those songs available to buy like any other song?
Can the retail disc of ACDC be imported into RB3? I've seen it at the shops for $25 or so.
Also (not a query) I noted the last line in this Rock Band article on Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-23-paul-mccartney-hits-rock-band-3):
A whopping 75 million songs have been sold through the Rock Band Music Store since launch on 20th November 2007.

What are Rock Band Network songs and why are they all "currently unavailable"?
Every week, new DLC is released for the Rock Band platform. This has been the case since the launch of the original game in 2007. However, just over a year ago Harmonix had the idea of letting the RB community buy RB dev kits, and chart their own songs. This project was Rock Band Network. And it's not just crappy "Hey man, let's totally chart our own shitty garage music!" music either, Rock Band Network has generated content for everything from tiny indie bands to major acts like Sleater-Kinney. Basically the only difference between your usual weekly DLC and RBN songs is that RBN content wasn't developed internally by Harmonix, although it is peer reviewed by Harmonix to ensure quality / charting accuracy. RBN content isn't yet available in Australia and some other territories, but if you want it, you can (as far as I'm aware) create a US gamertag / PSN account and use that to purchase content.
How exactly does it work where you can (?) use songs from the the previous game's discs? If you don't have the discs, are those songs available to buy like any other song?
Depends on the game. With Rock Band 1, you simply boot into RB1 and buy an export key from the extras menu, and then it rips the tracks from the disc to your HDD individually, so you can delete any songs you didn't like. With AC/DC, Green Day and LEGO, you boot the games, buy an export key from the extras menu, and then a huge (usually 2+ GB) export pack is downloaded to your HDD. This means they're all packed in together as one piece of content, so you can't delete the songs you hated. On the plus side? That download is permanently a part of your XBL account history, so you can then trade / sell the discs to your liking since you'll never have need of them again. Probably worth hanging on to RB1 though since you'll need the disc if you ever lose your exported songs from the HDD.
Note: in order to buy an export key, you must be using a NEW copy of a game, since you'll need the one-time-only activation code that comes on the back of the manual. The only exception to this is Rock Band 1, which uses a different method for export and thus can be purchased used.
Export keys range from $5 to $10 USD in price. Also, disc songs from any games in the series are not available as DLC. Although there are a few exceptions for songs that have been re-released to support pro-mode content (e.g. a couple of the Bon Jovi and Queen songs) or because the disc songs were covers, and they re-released the songs when they got master tracks (e.g. Iron Maiden).
Can the retail disc of ACDC be imported into RB3? I've seen it at the shops for $25 or so.
Yes. You just need to buy an export key for around $10, and it'll download from XBL as one big DLC pack. Just remember to buy a new copy, not used.
And Viacom sold them off as unprofitable? What on earth were they doing wrong?
Critically? Not much. But it's a lot harder to make a profit off a music game than a regular game, because you're also relying on selling and shipping peripherals. The cost of producing all those guitars and drum kits, then paying to get them out to stores apparently does a huge number on your bottom line. That would be why you're seeing Mad Catz take over distribution and production of instruments since RB3. Couple that with the fact that music games have declined over the last few years due to genre fatigue and you've got a recipe for much lower profits than expected. To my knowledge, as a series RB has turned an overall profit, but apparently the initial numbers for RB3 aren't great. The first week sales in the US were barely above 100,000 and the UK numbers hovered just above 8,000. No that isn't a typo. Eight thousand. Not that I can blame them, EA burned some pretty serious bridges with PAL gamers given the debacles that were the RB 1 and 2 "releases."

Acutally, I didn't get asked to pay any money with ACDC, it just downloaded automatically when I entered the code. The songs then appeared in RB3, although I haven't tried one of them yet (can't be arsed digging the guitar out right now.)

I wrote a message to EA and sent it to their support just then.
Dear EA
Hi! I’m finding it difficult to send you a letter, so hopefully this message finds anyone who cares about EA customer service.
I wish to express my disappointment as to how Rock Band 3 has been handled in Australia. I have a copy now just after Christmas, which is a logical time to get games, yet the major selling point, the keyboard peripheral, is now completely unavailable. Apparently this is not because of a Christmas sell-out but because it was only ever available for pre-order and there’s no known plans to make more available.
Staff at EB games tell me this is an EA issue and, given the very poor handling of Rock Band and Rock Band 2 I am inclined to agree. I cannot understand why you bother to have such a critically acclaimed, quality game and give it zero support and so zero chance to succeed. You have a clear differential from the Activision competitor and yet you have not made that known nor available to anyone except the very sorts of people who would likely import anyway. Given that the limited keyboard release you HAVE offered is AU$140, a currency currently worth more than the greenback, making the game plus peripheral nearly $250, it seems you want to dismiss this particular market altogether anyway.
I’m probably what is referred to as a “neckbeard”, as my purchasing decisions are affected by my opinion of the people involved. I currently buy no Activision games, a situation made admittedly easy by their sheer lack of variety, and it would be true to say that EA gets the lion’s share of my business, as I follow Dead Space, Mass Effect, Burnout (and now Need For Speed Hot Pursuit), Dragon Age and perhaps other things which I haven’t realised come from EA. I buy downloadable content after reading reviews. I don’t disagree with the spirit of “project ten dollar” although you choose a fine line. I pay attention to corporate activity and philosophy. EA currently has my respect for, as I believe, it’s efforts to become more like Ubisoft, by releasing stable sequels while taking risks on new content such as Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge. I hope this position works out for EA because I think it is good for the industry and consumer, and deserves success.
I’m now struggling to figure out what to do with my Rock Band 3 disc now that I can’t find the Keyboard peripheral in any store in Australia, either real or online, while also wondering how I could afford it even if it was! I would rather buy it at EB, where I can use traded games to mitigate some of the prohibitive expense. I have read that Rock Band has achieved 75 million sales of songs online, which I would have thought is the obvious way for the publisher to make money. I don’t think selling hardware at a loss is good business, but price-gouging on an essential peripheral that isn’t actually available to purchase anyway is daft.
I hope you can reply with information that more keyboards - and perhaps promotion of this worthy game! - will be made available in Australia.
Yours sincerely

To be honest, I've long felt that EA and Viacom had simply given the Australian market over to Guitar Hero, likely because the idea of actually competing with the apparent reigning champion had been tossed into the Too Hard basket. The subsequent delay and the still non-existant release of RB2 have only served to reaffirm these beliefs.

Note that what you actually need to access RBN songs is an XBL account that has access to the XNA Creator's Club, which is, sadly, only available in North America. This is actually a Microsoft problem, not an EA/Harmonix/MTV/Viacom problem.
It's the same reason we don't have access to all those cool indie games that Americans get.
@aub: The RB3 keyboard was available to buy at JB HiFi for a time. I've seen Wii versions of it as recently as Christmas Eve, it's just the PS3 and 360 versions that seem to have vanished from the face of the Earth.

EA are trying to temper the second hand market; I'm not sure they are yet so dumb as to try and eliminate it altogether, new sales are too dependent on it.

That's the idea. If you've got the MIDI converter you can actually use any MIDI compatible keyboard with the game instead of the controller. Assuming you've got an actual keyboard already you could probably try sightreading with the TV volume turned down and see how it goes. God knows there's gonna be an insane amount of people doing that with an amp when the Squier comes out.
If using something other than the Harmonix keyboard, how would you know where your fingers are meant to be placed?

If you're importing from the US the only place you're going to be able to find the Fender is Best Buy or eBay. It was originally going to be available at multiple retailers, but now it's going to be a Best Buy exclusive. I'm not sure that they ship internationally though, hence my suspicion that you'll have to check eBay. The guitar itself is going to be $280 USD, and you'll need the MIDI adapter in order to get it to work with the game, which goes for $20 USD. So you're probably looking at $400 AUD, easily, in order to get it shipped from America.
In unrelated news, a new title update is out for RB3. The note runways have been darkened a little to enhance legibility, you can now use breakneck speed in practice mode, and they finally added the ability to deploy overdrive by hitting the "back" button during vocals, so you no longer have to scream to activate it (although you can still only activate during activation sections, lest the update totally break the scoring paths for vocals.)

Also, if you're trying to get the free DLC pack that comes with RB3 it may not be compatible with the EU/AU store for whatever system you're on. Depends on if you're getting the EU RB2 or US copy, did the EU copy come with that free DLC pack?

Which setlists you choose is up to you, some of them will be totally random, some will be random within a certain group (e.g. "Random '90s Setlist" or "Random Classic Rock Setlist") and some are decided for you.
So to answer your question; you can't choose random setlists all the time, but they can probably get you through 70% of the way through career mode if you pick them every time they come up.

I'm pretty annoyed about being able to use the controller for vox OD and only being able to do it in certain places. You should be able to do it anywhere just like the guitars. There are often times when you don't get the chance to use it when you really need to.
What free DLC pack came with RB3?
aubergine
06-02-2011, 11:03 PM
Yeah, with RB1 you only need the export code that you buy on XBL or PSN, and it'll rip them from the disc. With RB2, you would need a new copy.
EB are selling Rock Band second-hand for $27.
The export key only costs 400 points, so if I were an unscrupulous person I could return Rock Band tomorrow and essentially get 53 songs for about $7.
There's a poison kiss with this though, as it turns out some of the best songs described on the packet don't actually export - Enter Sandman, Black Hole Sun, I picked up on a few others (no doubt the full list of unavailable songs is out there in google-land) but even so it's still huge value for money!

I think there ends up being 5 that don't transfer.
I saw RB1 in BigW today for $25... they only had PS3 copies, but it might be different in other stores. I'm not sure if you can return those though. Just go with EB.
Up to 104 songs Gold Starred on drums now.

None, but there was a 3 The Doors song pack around launch. Not sure if it's still free or not.

I saw that "Goal", what does it mean to get "Gold Stars" though? I mean, how?
Also, with RB1 I've now got 250+ songs, which is nuts, and I want more.
Not sure why Guitar Hero grabbed me only as a passing fad, but RB3 has sent me Gotta Catch Em All! nuts somehow.

Oh that. No, it was only for the first week of RB3's release.
Gold Stars can only be gotten on Expert, and you need roughly 1.5x the points of 5 stars. So if you get 5* at 100,000 on a song, GS will be about 150,000.

Okay. I might have to try expert on the couple of songs I've mastered on Hard.
I'm finding now that I've broken the seal, I can at least pass many on Hard on the first attempt.
I bought The Beatles for $20 at EB and... I hate it. The opening movie is terrific, but I'm finding the note charts not fun to play, and it turns out I don't like The Beatles' music that much.
They come across as up themselves anyway. I don't mean the people, but "The Beatles" - whoever it belongs to. Too good to mix with other sings by other bands? Why can't I buy Beatles songs in RB3? Answer, The Beatles, as a dated phenomenon, a moment in history, or just a catalogue, is up itself.
They have nothing as fun to play as I Got You (I Feel Good).

You are insane. Sure the first few career sets aren't that interesting but once you hit the later half it is awesome fun. Sure it's not as hard as RB3 but I'd argue that works for it rather than against.
(I should mention I've been playing solely with drums).
Try some of these ones out:
I Me Mine
I Am the Walrus
Don't Let Me Down
Get Back
Hey Bulldog
I've Got A Feeling
We'll have to get some multiplayer games going at some stage :)

That's kinda funny, Aub. I'd never listened to the Beatles at all before buying that ridiculous $350 kit a few years ago on a whim and boy! What a whim it was! Best thing I've bought for my 360. I was in a Beatles induced fever dream for the next few months at least and I still listen to them quite avidly today!

Full Combo.
Hitting 100% of notes without breaking the streak.
It's possible to 100% without doing a full combo if you attempt to insert extra strums.

I think it worked on mine, although I've truly no idea what devil's pact I've signed by this seemingly superfluous action. They didn't realm explain the features and benefits of "linking" apart from the achievement points.
Presumably EA now has a window into my soul.

It never worked for me for the first few weeks after launch, but unlinking and re-linking worked not long after. If you ever linked RB2 to your account, it should do it automatically.
As for linking accounts, it allows to you to build setlists and send them to friends (or back home to yourself) as well as track your progress outside of the game. So not a huge benefit, but if you're super in to tracklist building it's faster than using the game.

I just spent ages getting better at a song (on keys) but found it was somehow registering, and not registering, what I'd done on the leaderboard.
In the stats it said my score was 10,000 and my place 219th (my first attempt I think), but my top had been 20,000 and 138th. When I finish the song, regardless of my score in that attempt, it says "get 45 more points to reach 137th!" or words to that effect.
Is the leaderboard system in this game broken?
aubergine
16-02-2011, 02:34 AM
God. Damn. It.
I went back later and tried again, and it registered, this time (roughly) 125th. So I tried it a second time and got to twenty-somethingth IN THE WORLD and it didn't register.
