View Full Version : A Clean Slate

You may have noticed that we have new forum guidelines. We’ve based these heavily off the existing rules over at PCPP, with some minor tweaks here and there. Please read through these.
This is a clean start both for members and moderators. All members that have been banned in the past may return to freely post on these boards (except for those blacklisted by the HAH). If your primary account is still in the db, and still banned, let us know so we can unban it.
Please note that you may only have one account at a time, if you currently have alts, please step forward and let us know. We will give you an amnesty period, so we can clean up alternate accounts.
In addition, all infractions have been lifted, including all history from the mod forums. This is a clean start everyone.
Let's move forwards, and not look backwards.

Choa, what about people who were IP banned? Are they allowed back or will they still be kept from the site?
My understanding is that it is an amnesty for everyone except people who had ripped people off in the HAH.
Let's move forwards, and not look backwards.
Upward, not forward, always twirling.

Yeah It's a good move IMO and also getting rid of the post hounds will only mean people will post only because they want to and NOT to see there numbers go up. Thought there's still a subtitle so people could use that the see what bracket there in but meh it's a good balance :)

So FrozenSoul80 has been over at UYAC pushing this clean slate pretty hard in the hope to do away with the "Us vs Them" mentality. And its something I gave some thought to.
But unfortunately, because its not a completely clean slate, its a hard sale.
The mod forum and posts within were made public prior to this reboot, and today I decided to check it out.
It was quite an eye opener to see the mod's opinions on myself and other users from behind the veil of secrecy that was the mod forum. Partially because some opinions were way off (for one, you took stuff posted at UYAC/MJ waaaay too seriously ie, Sloppy's thread re: the girl he was after), but other times because it put my actions in another light, and tbh I was disappointed in myself.
But from reading it all (and with 4 archived threads, and 121 images of posts, including Aub's immense Vin banning story, it wasn't a quick read) the thing that resonated throughout was an immense double standard.
Its no secret that several mods/admins lurked MJ. But while in one hand you guys were critical of MJ being so full of hate and personal attacks towards Hyper mods/admins/memebrs, you were very much guilty of the same behaviour with many personal attacks towards myself, vin, texta, IRS, TAT, javer, Sloppy, etc, etc, etc. Starscream even gave it his own nickname "MoronJunction"; how can you take the moral high ground if you are going to resort to the same petty namecalling that we are guilty of? If that section was public it would be ream of deleted posts and infractions for bullying and personal insults.
It was a vicious cycle that everyone was party to. Us vs Them.
And this is why I find this "clean slate" a hard sale as I find it hard to believe these attitudes will suddenly disappear. Will UYAC'ers/MJ'ers) still be looked down upon in contempt?
UYAC poses as a great comapnion to Hyper, in the sense that its an 15+/18+ sub-section of Hyper. All the fun and hijinks that used to be a great part of Hyper many moons ago, can be freely expressed there with some of the same members, without resulting in aggrevating this community and the magazine itself, who don't share the same taste.
I'm willing to give this clean slate a try, but I remain very dubious while some of the old guard is still in place.

Most of the older mods are going to be retiring some time soon, they are just with us to help some of us replacements to get settled. The mod guidelines have been overhauled, if an us vs them mentality develops it will be quickly attended to.
But like I've said before, this can't be one-sided. The members will have to help, this change must happen on both sides of the fence if it is to work.
I must say, I'm actually pretty proud of most of you. Most of you have ditched the immaturity almost instantly, and that is to be congratulated.

You post on UYAC, should be no surprise to you.
When the mod forum was leaked. Most the mods came off pretty well, except for 2. Everybody knows the 2 so I won't bother to mention names. They are responsible for about 90% of the mods bad reputation, and a major sticking point for a good relationship between mods and members.
Now am I right in saying all the good old mods are stepping down but those 2 are staying? Because it looks that way.

C'mon FS, give us some juicy previews for what's to develop in the next few weeks.
I should mention. I thought the whole mod team were a ridiculous secret adventure club. But after seeing the mods forum it opened my eyes a little. MOST (but not all) the time they were fair, except for a certain couple of trouble makers who pushed their personal vendettas over and over and over and over and over. Along with name calling and garbage that would make MightyJustice blush with embarrassment.
It appeared worse than it was because of mods being reluctant to disagree in public. But dudes like Chalkfacedgoon are champions. New mods are cool also.

First post so far where i've missed having the rep system.
Now while I understand why it was removed, any chance we can look into some sort of post comment/approval system, where if you like/appreciate or even dislike/disagree with an individual post, you can give it a simple 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down'?
While I didn't care much for pep totals and the system itself, writing a comment or just giving a positive response to a user for a post they made was something I really liked about the pep system.

Perhaps if people like a post they can just do what you just did, quote the post and say "I like this post, let's have some more of that kind of post."
Unlike the previous rep system, if people are quoting posts and going "I hate this post and curse the poster to an eternity of unwelcome razor sodomy" the mods can pick up on it quickly and delete / discipline / whatever rather than finding out about it after it's been going on for 6 months via a semi-private messaging system.

Butt,

On topic, I think the Clean Slate idea is a nice dream but,
texta is totally right, though.
You have a massive paragraph in the guidelines prohibiting spamming, but we all know that the rep system was a way to keep shit and useless one-word posts out of threads:
Spamming
Posts which add little to the discussion – whether they are irrelevant to the topic at hand, or add little to the discussion at hand (such as “I agree” or “lol”) – are not allowed. Spamming is not as strictly enforced in the Off Topic section; however this is not a green light to post the first thing that comes to your mind.
Before posting, you should ask yourself, “Is what I’m about to post informative, interesting, or making a solid contribution to the discussion in any way?” If it isn’t, please don’t post. Another rule of thumb that is often suggested is that if your post is less than a line or two long (at a standard window size), you're not adding enough to the discussion. Obviously there are valid exceptions, but more often than not if you can only think of a few words to post, it's not going to be worth posting at all.
Additionally, “In before lock” comments (or any comments to that effect) are not allowed, and will automatically result in a penalty being handed out. Similarly, continual abuse of the report post function is also not allowed. This function is there to report legitimate issues that arise on the boards.

texta is totally right, though.
You have an example of the exact kind of post you are talking about right there. "texta is right" "I agree" "good post"
Yet you've also gone on to expand on the post topic with additional material explaining why you think you're right.
Is your post "I agree" spam? Or is it saved from that simply by being longer than that?
It's a fairly ridiculous distinction anyway. In a situation where I want to pep-post something (from before the pep system was introduced) I'd tend to do that, quote the post with "this is awesome", but then also put my OWN contribution to the thread into it too.
Like this:
texta is totally right, though.I agree!
On the same topic, I feel that Goering was misunderstood - yes they can bandy words like "Immoral" and "genocide" but as I think texta will agree, when you examine the policies of the man why he's a positive delight! And I expect an absolute hoot at dinner parties!
Guidelines on spam only need to be adhered to when it is getting out of hand, and there is going to be disagreement about the interpretation of that. As you may know, I don't recall ever being offended by someone saying "great post" but certainly have been by "shit post."

No one who doesn't want to read this garbage has to. With today's storage limits the original reasons for "spam" being bad are completely irrelevant - it's kind of like how one day someone realised that game development only include "death" and "continues" because of the original arcade-business plan of stealing quarters from kids.
From a website moderating point of view it's far better for this to be out here than passing back and forth behind the scenes like shivs in prison.

Continues and lives, mayhaps; death is still a valid subset of challenge, though, which is still important in most gaming experiences, and a reasonable compromise between permadeath and penalty-less respawn normally needs to be reached to enforce challenge with consequence.
