I know, but there is only about five, well perhaps six exclusive games on my must buy list. The rest I don't care about. If the Wii was not backwards compatible with the Cube then I would not even bother buying it, seeing as less than ten games on a console to me is not worth it.

I'm already considering Paper Mario series, but I don't know about the Tales games, the SNES / PS1 games were more than enough for me.

They still have annoying random battles right? Or do you walk up to the enemies, I don't remember.

Anyhow, are the battles any good - do you have an area to attack in, or does it have limited plane of movement?

I'll have to go read some stuff now, I'm curious about it. Damn you and your reasonableness Gunblade, my eyes are already sore from the last couple hours of reading about games!

Gunblade89

Not really random battles in ToS, you actually approach the enemy in the overworld and initiate the battles that way. The battle system is pretty fun it's in real time and not turned based at all.

In trying to get my hands of Tales of Vesperia for Xbox 360 at the moment.

Paper Mario 2 is awesome, such a charming game.

The battle system is great.
You move left to right, hold one button to change targets and hold another to move up and down the field.

Sort of like smash bros with A being standard attack but there's no A up, A across etc but the standard comb can change a little, I think it was something like A, A, A + up then A was a little better and you can increase the amount of hits with bonuses from the rings or spheres whatever they were called but then you couldn't follow it up with B.

B with a direction being special moves, you map 5 moves of your choice, the moves you learn depend on what bonuses you choose the some rings you can equip.

Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang! Demon Fang!

Hah, just started playing it yesterday. Actually, I played it for an hour this time last year so I just continued on from there (the beginning is incredibly dull).

Put in 5 hours so far, the game is pretty damned good and very easy on the eye.

If you have any intention of playing Heavy Rain someday, for god's sake play it after Fahrenheit, but not before it.

You don't need to play Fahrenheit at all (but why would you not! I loved it, except for the shonky ending), but all I'm saying is that if you play Heavy Rain first, you WILL NOT be able to back and enjoy Fahrenheit, because of all the vast improvements.

It would be like playing Street Fighter IV then playing Street Fighter #1.

note: I have completed the single player (borrowed a 360 copy from a friend), so I would only be getting it for the co-op - which I hear is excellent.

Nowhere near as good...

Anyways, I'm thinking of picking up a DS to play some of the old school RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Dragon's Quest.

They have second hand ones at EB - original $50, DS Lite $68, then at Harvey Norman there is the DS XL for $197 new.

I'm not interested in the 3DS. Any thoughts?

DS Lite. Better design, battery and brightness then the normal DS.

XL is a bit expansive but there will be less eye straining.

All of them have terrible buttons. I especially hate the inferior shoulder buttons on my DSi.

And I'm not too excited about the "+" control placement on the 3DS.

Well, I have Chrono Trigger and a DSi, any I refuse to play that game.

I'm waiting until I get an XL, because the text is way too friggin small on Chrono Trigger for the DS/LITE/DSi, (and in general) so if you are going to play text heavy games such as DQ or Chrono, I strongly recommend the XL, it is much more enjoyable to play. It's certainly not a deal breaker, but strain your eyes for no good reason. Also, those games will be much prettier on the larger screen. More comfortable to play as well.

If the XL is not an option for you I suggest wait for a price drop (I am), OR get a DSi, seeing as it has better contrast, and will be better to read RPG stuff on than the DS phat or DS Lite. Oh, and grab some extendable stlyus', the ones that pull out to about 1.5 the size of the crummy stylus that comes standard with most models, otherwise your hand will cramp up pretty quick. Unless your have the hands of a five year old, but you probably don't, and if you do, give them back to the poor kid you sick f***.

I've considered at times buying a DS Lite purely for the GBA slot, the games look dramatically better. But the shoulder buttons are pure excrement, so I just use my GBA SP, seeing as many GBA games rely on the L and R buttons for critical functions, like not dying at inappropriate times due to shit buttons. Probably a non-issue for you, but I just thought I'd spit that bit out, seeing as nobody ever seems to mention it, or I'm the only person in the world who hates them so much.

I have no idea, I'll wait 6 months, 12 months of whatever. I just wait and wait till shit gets cheap. Try posting in the general DS/handheld thread and someone there may have an idea.

I think it's usually every six months or so prices go down a little, but maybe longer, now that the 3DS is out, it's only a matter of time before the XL drops a bit, so I'll just keep waiting, like Chuck Norris.

Ah well, I am enjoying my Cube games on the Wii with my PS2 controller and now and then I have to play GBA Metroid on my Gamecube, becuase it looks/sounds sweet.

What use is modern technology if it doesn't allow me to play yesterdays superior and time proven games in old and boring ways.

In conclusion:

Gamecube + GBA player + Metroid(s) + HD TV + PS2 controller = awesome!

RUSH is fantastic. The mechanics are brilliant and how a puzzle game should be,the early puzzles are fun to play even though they're easy, and the later puzzles are absolutely insane but not frustratingly so (there's a two-level hint system to help as well)

Buy Bit.Trip Runner, it's great.

Most people (let's face it, few of us are lucky enough to possess Aran's godly skillz) are going to spend the majority of their time failing levels. You'll notice in that Quick Look though that both Vinny and Ryan were finding the game addictive. The game is difficult, and a single failure will send you flying back to the start of the level, but it's also really enjoyable in that Trials HD/VVVVVV/Super Meat Boy way. After every failure you'll find yourself thinking "One more go!" until you finally finish the level, and then when it jumps straight into the next one after the bonus level/score screen you're likely to get into that loop all over again.

Levels play like a rhythm game, the platforming sequence is basically a note highway but instead of playing notes you do things like jump, slide and block projectiles. As you play through levels you find yourself learning the sequences thrown at you to the point where they simply feel natural, and it's gratifying to see something that was hampering your progress before fly by with ease. Particularly when by the time you finish a level you'll likely breeze through a bunch of sequences that at first were quite difficult.

The biggest problem I had with the game was that at times the starting music loop (or the boss music loop) could become quite droning as you make multiple attempts.

I found it difficult to the point of it not being fun. When you're outside the levels are linear but it's not always apparent where you're supposed to be going. The currency system is interesting, but I think they went a bit too far in making the normal ammo weak. When it takes more than one pistol clip to kill the first enemies you find, it feels like you're shooting playdoh rather than bullets. The atmosphere is amazing though.

Note that I am generally not great at shooters and did not play it for that long, maybe a few hours. If you must play it I think the hardcoreness warrants PC controls.

I loved Metro 2033 as well. Never had problems with running out of military grade rounds, there's a fair bit of it around if you know where to look. Towards the end of the game was when I started to really think that my bullets were made of rubber, or that some guns just seemed to be less effective than they once were.

I've completed it on Ranger mode easy, but not Ranger mode hardcore. With the easy mode, I found that I had to spend a lot of the game running around without a mask on to try and save my air filters, especially since the last part of the game you can't buy any more. So if you've used them all up and get to that point you could be stuffed. Dead bodies never seemed to carry enough filters or new masks if yours started to get cracked. I'd imagine the hardcore mode would be a lot worse!

They are selling it on ozgameshop for $60. That's the cheapest I've seen it. I'm not familiar with the other retail sites often mentioned on these boards though.

I've only played MP on GOW3 so far but, besides the small amount of maps, it has made some improvements. Games are much quicker to find. The new Team Deathmatch mode is really fun, merging the elimination focus of older GOWs with a more accessible respawning mechanic. I'd say this version would be much friendlier to newcomers. The additional starting weapons also shapes up gameplay before teams gain strongholds on the maps and start using the map-placed weapons. Loving it so far. I also like the changed Guardian/Meatflag mode, where now your must capture the leader as a meat-shield and hold them for 30 seconds rather than just kill them (which would then mean the rest of the team would stop respawning). Idiot players as leader aren't so much a problem then as a simple smoke grenade can 'save' them plus the changes make the matches suspenseful.

Beast and Horde mode sound awesome. I already really liked Horde mode in GOW2. Campaign in GOW has always been its weakest point, though salvaged by co-op. Four player co-op should be great fun. Apparently it's super easy though even on Hardcore. Meh.

Beast mode is an interesting twist. Each option caters to a different approach which although simple, allows for a surprising degree of flexibility. With only two people, strategy begins to take place; a savage drone to provide covering fire while a wretch goes in for the kills, a kantus healing the tanking mauler, a berserker ploughs through all of the cover while a scantipede cleans up everything left in the wake. Bring it up to four players and there is plenty of potential for fun and co-operation in trying to achieve the lowest time.

Horde is horde, but with the inclusion of barricades which slow enemy movement, decoys which draw fire, and turrets which you, well, shoot. These changes sound simple, but they allow you to play it in a different way. Which barricades do you use to create choke points, or upgrade to outright shut the enemy out? Do you bother using decoys to distract the enemy while you close in from a better angle? Would you rather dice the enemy with torrents of fire, or let your ally hold the front while you flank? So on, so forth.

The campaign is easier than the previous instalments, though it is quite fun if you want to adopt a Rambo approach. You'll die rarely on hardcore since your allies are usually nearby and they are actually effective at killing and supporting.

I should be trying Beast, Horde and the insane campaign with three friends sometime over the weekend. If general opinion is anything to go by: the more humans, the better it gets. Especially when you can throw empty bottles at them.

tl;dr: If you want a great third-person, cover-based shooter experience, get Gears 3. Single player is enjoyable (if easy), while multiplayer is brilliant (regardless of whether you prefer killing people, bots or both). Even if you're a cheivo whore like myself, it's worth getting (despite the horrible Seriously 3.0 achievement).

I think i'll get it along with Vanquish for $40

It loads faster (in level) on Ps3, but loads slower between levels.

I bought the Ps3 version though seeing as I've been playing Resi for years on PS controllers, and enjoy that comfort zone.

So in conclusion, buy Shadows of the Damned on every console twice.

Then buy it again! Beause I ****ing say so, you mother mucking piece of demon excrement, I'll kill you ten times over! Stomp you to hell you sonuvabitch. Or my name isn't Garcia ****-ing Hotspur!

Ignore the chainsaw, save for the lollipoop and buy the Pai Mel, at least that's what my old pappy used to say when I was a young crabstick.

Help me decide, I can only get one. Each genre appeals to me;

Resident Evil Revelations
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
The Darkness II

Resident Evil Revelations

This one as it is probably the cheapest. By the time you have finished playing it the other two would have dropped in price by at least 30% and you can get them too.

I played the demo of Reckoning last night. I don't know if I like it, yet. I had 45 left mins to explore the area but had to fight my sleepiness at 5:00AM. It feels like the bastard son of Oblivion and Fable. The female warrior I created looked like a blonde version of Kate Beckinsale. The combat seems too easy as you can roll out of the way with lightning speed. If you are playing Skyrim right now, I don't know why you would want to get into another RPG at the same time.

I can vouch that Revelations is also a lot of fun. There's plenty to do and unlock that will keep you going for a while.

Telltale Game's Sam & Max: Seasons 1-3. $40 digital download (you can optionally get the the physical game DVDs for free after purchase, but you pay for postage)

Yay or nay?

Doesn't sound all too cheap. I'd say wait until Steam sale (if it's for PC).

Yeah, it's for PC.

15 chapters at $2.67 each? How cheaper can it get on Steam?

The only benefit I can think of purchasing from the Telltale site against the Steam site is that you get free physical DVDs that require no activation (you pay for postage obviously) once a complete season for Sam & Max is finished.

When you say it like that it sounds good. :p

I'm sure it's been cheaper during sales on Steam, up to you really.
No DRM and no download is always good though.

I once scored this on Telltale games website:

US $4.95 Tales of Monkey Island download

US $7.87 Tales of Monkey Island Standard DVD (incl. shipping)

This was at a time when US $7.87 = $8.20 AUD, but is still a cheap deal.

I then sold the DVD version on ebay for $23.33 + $3.33.

Never got around to actually downloading or playing the game though.

Nay

Unless you're a fan of not doing a great deal except following a path and watching cut scenes.

Speaking of following a path and watching cutscenes, I got a free copy of BF3 with a new video card. I like that you can pointlessly shoot out car taillights in the parking garage level, but when some streetlights are blinding you the bulbs are apparently able to withstand a sniper round. Also, quick time events ****ING EVERYWHERE.

PROS: Strong horror/fantasy aesthetics, great sense of mood and in game audio/atmosphere is excellent. It's an interactive ghost train ride. Torch mechanic is fairly decent.
Some decent dialogue, voice acting, humour.

There is nothing else quite like on 360, similar stuff sure, but not the same.
Play it for the story (silly as it is) and aesthetics, don't play it for the 'action', which is okay but gets tedious.

CONS: Pacing is all over the place, game works best if played in as few sessions as possible, it's quite short. Story is gimmicky and overly derivative, but establishes enough of a narrative and 'world' to push the player forward. Coffee thermos collectables are a waste of time.

Alan Wake is cheap at EB at the moment and I enjoyed hell out of my first playthrough. The second attempt just showed the game is not very interesting without the story to propel you along. I loved the story and hope they get to continue it, though don't see how a sequel could be near as good because there's not really any secrets left: you could treat the on-disc (sans DLC) ending as the end and it makes perfect sense to stop there. (please spoiler tag if you want to argue about that.)
