Here is a thread where a member posts his or her dilemma about a game related purchase and everyone else tries to help out. You can also post here for recommendations for certain types of games. I'll get it started:
Convince me to buy/not buy Far Cry 2 (PC) preowned for $24.95. I have two days of holidays left to spend on it.

Simply put:
a) do you like open world games?
b) do you enjoy putting a lot of effort into a game to see how everything works and how you can enjoy it to the fullest extent (since the game doesn't really hold your hand or tell you how to do something)
c) do you like to set shit on fire?

Don't buy it if you don't like repetitive tasks with little reward.

Far Cry 2 is a risky purchase - it's a superb game in many ways, yet some people simply find it too complex or uninviting. I think it comes down to how big a deal $25 is to you, in this instance.

Far Cry 2 never really won me over, and I've had a hard time convincing myself to give it another chance, but honestly, for $25, it's not a HUGE loss if you don't get major mileage out of it. I bought it on release at JB (think it was about $89 at the time) and even though I haven't given it the love it deserves, I don't think of it as a wasted purchase.

I've been thinking about getting a PSP, but am not really sure.
I mainly want one for the games and the more features it has than a DS (not DSi, just regular type). I already own a phat DS and don't use it very often, but I would also like to watch videos on it. One thing that is putting me off getting one is the fact that PSP's have been around for a number of years and I don't want to spend 300 bucks on it, and then have a new generation of handheld consoles be announced in a couple of years.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'd hold off, especially with the PSPGo on the way. The system has some great games, but they are few and far between. Hopefully the system update will re-invigorate the market.

I wouldn't really want a PSP go for a number of reasons including the high price, and also unless I am mistaken all games must be downloaded via the psn store and my internet plan has a low cap so i'm not sure how large the games will be.
The games I mainly want are Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, Loco Roco, Patapon, Daxter, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy.

Get an original psp and put custom firmware on it. That way u get to play all the umd games u like but u also get an awesome portable emulator (upto n64)

That is a good feature, but isn't the 3000's screen better when it comes to glare, although that is not an essential feature. Also is it still possible to buy the original PSP from retailers?

You'd be lucky to get a brand new original from retailers. You should be able to find pre-owned ones easily though.
I bought mine early this year. A pre-owned original for $150.

Sony still plan to provide the PSP 3000 alongside the PSP Go, they're very much aware that not everyone is able to make the shift to downloadable games only just yet.
Honestly? If you can afford it, and the list of games you want is that long I'd say it's probably worth the jump. Three of the games you listed already have sequels out or on the way (MGS Peace Walker, Patapon 2, Loco Roco 2), all of which look fantastic. Plus you've got other strong titles on the way this year like Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Assassin's Creed Bloodlines.
Overall it's been a surprisingly strong purchase. I don't play my PSP every month, but I bust it out frequently when I'm on a trip, and when I do get a new game I've always been pleasantly surprised at its quality. Plus if you've got a PS3 you can do some fun stuff with it (transfer movies, TV shows, use remote play to play PS3 games via your PSP, which is always handy if someone's hogging the TV with a different console.)

I found a copy of Bioshock for PS3 at BigW for $60... I pretty much left it there because I still have so many unfinished games that I should get round to finishing. And yet I'm playing through HalfLife 2 again instead of doing that...

Yes. BioShock is one of my favourite games this gen. If you're a fan of the likes of System Shock, Deus Ex, or Dead Space then it's a must purchase. Biggest drawcard is the overall art direction and story, but mechanically it's no slouch either.

If you love Half-Life 2 you'll probably love Bioshock, so I'd say yes! You can get it cheaper than $60, however! Check out eBay for some that are a little cheaper, many for $50 inc. post, or you could try and win some of the auctions for less!

PoP I didn't really get into. It's a beautiful game and the atmosphere is great, but somehow the action (read: wall running, acrobatics and combat) feels too, whats the word, detached? Like the game engine is doing everything for you. Some people really liked it but I found myself getting bored and selling it after about a week.
I absolutely loved Mirror's Edge. It's difficult and the combat can feel a bit forced at times (mainly because it tends to slow the flow of the game), but when it's going there's really nothing else like it. The controls are spot on, the art and sound design is stunning. A 9/10 game for me.

It's definitely worth playing through to the end at least once. TLaD is also great, and the multiplayer can be hilarious. We had some great Hyper games of Cops and Crooks when it was first released. Good times.

Mirror's Edge is alot of fun when running around and stuff but the combat is ridiculous...
I've never ever sworn so much while playing a game and that's saying something. It's so damn easy to die when getting shot at or even in hand to hand and combat is so friggin retarded. I ended up giving it away before I finished it >_>
Also thanks for the positive thoughts on Bioshock. I've wanted it for a while so I think when I see it again I'll definitely pick it up :D

I found that the trick with the combat in Mirror's Edge is to avoid it. There's only really 3 or 4 instances in the game where you cant (and yeah, they were pretty frustrating). A lot of the time you can get away with dropping one blue and running from the rest.
EDIT: @Gem
I haven't had any lag or connection issues for ages now, It was a bit broken for about 2 days after launch (360 version) but it's been smooth as avocado since then. Very occasionally get very minor lag but I think the Aussie servers are up now. Haven't had any probs with lag. Download the demo before you purchase though, might not be your thing. I think the demo actually lets you play for an hour (as opposed to half an hour normally) this weekend, special deal mentioned on the scrolling ticker.

Yeah Second, definitely get Mirror's Edge, one of my favourite games on 360. Combat can be annoying, yeah, but you still get immense satisfaction from fly kicking someone's head while running along a wall! Main point is the acrobatics though, and the game does it brilliantly, especially in the time trials and speed runs.

I dunno, I was totally the opposite. Prince of Persia was easy, but it was beautiful enough and mechanically satisfying enough that it was just a great game to play if you're in the mood to chill out. Avoid the DLC though, it's shit.
Mirror's Edge was hit and miss. I felt like the game opened really well, and got worse as it progressed. Despite the combat flaws, even the parkour was a little off at times, mostly because it relied on trial and error gameplay to get through the levels. Mechanically and conceptually it's brilliant, but the level design is very linear and punishing. Don't expect a freeform game where you make your own way, it's linear and trial and error all the way through. Oh, and the story was awful, absolute wasted potential. I'd recommend a rental at best.
... unless of course you're in it for the time trial mode and not the campaign. Then you might have some fun.

See, I also thought the levels were really linear when playing the main story...and then while playing the time trials I realised they were anything but. Sure, the levels are 'linear' in that you have to get from point A to point B, but in almost every case there's a number of ways to do that.
It's just that you never really get to explore the levels in the main game, which was a shame, but if they fix that for the sequel it would be great.
And I seem to be the opposite to most people in that I actually like the fact that you often can't just, on your first time tackling a particular area, just run through and hit a perfect run without even really thinking about it. Looking at all the particular elements in an area and then thinking about how you can get through the fastest using them, even if it is with a bit of trial and error sometimes, made it all the more satisfying when you DO work out the perfect path and hit it well.

I'd agree, if there were a greater range of ways to get through the level without dying as much. As it stands, you end up falling to your death quite frequently, and for a game that's based on parkour, a philosophy of movement that expects an unbroken chain of movement, it really just broke the pacing for me entirely. If you work at it, the game can become more enjoyable, but I'd really rather that the penalty for failure leaned more toward "Oh shit, I took the slow route" rather than trial and error checkpointy goodness. Still, it had enough going for it that I'm hopeful that they'll get it right in the sequel.
AranchineD
20-07-2009, 09:31 AM
Yes, but you really should not expect to be able to get an unbroken chain of movement on your first time in an area without even looking at all the elements you can use first. I mean, there's a difference between the game being unfair and the player just being reckless in approaching an area.
You could almost compare Mirror's Edge to a puzzle game, really; just randomly move pieces around or just keep guessing, and you'll eventually get the solution, yes, but you'll probably be frustrated by the end of it, but if you take a look at the puzzle and work out the solution beforehand and then attack it it seems much more easier and less annoying.
Of course this doesn't include puzzle games where you have people shooting at you while you're attempting to solve them :P, but you get my general idea.
Also your solution for 'taking the slow route' rather than just death...I don't know, for me it'd kinda dilute the experience and danger of attempting a good run, and even if I did land onto the slow route I'd probably just end up restarting from the last checkpoint to try the jump again anyway.
EDIT: Although now that I think about it, this is in the game already, since the path almost everyone takes when playing through the story for the first time or just by going by the obvious path is actually usually the slowest route anyway.

I don't really have friends over that often for the multiplayer to be too worthwhile, and I still have a large backlog of games to play - this is probably the main thing stopping me.

Banjo Kazooie

So long as you're not paying a crapload of postage to get it from overseas, then yeah, it's worth a spin, just for the experience. It's pretty boring mind you, and I'm contemplating getting rid of my copy as it's a bit......drab and soulless. Around $479 for the Elite I reckon but you can always haggle. Save $499 just in case. I would go Elite only if I must have black console and controller.
The Arcade Pack comes with 1 wireless controller. We got one last Christmas. The game you get with it is usually just Sega Superstars Tennis and Arcade Compilation. And you get the crappy Composite AV Cable. But you can buy HDMI cables for $7.95 (http://www.jamellcables.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=18&products_id=102) posted or cheaper from ebay. Any of the extra peripherals you need are a lot cheaper from ebay so don't be afraid to hunt around.

Lazlow, if you wait a while I can pass on TAT's copy of PGR4 to you when I'm done with it.
If not, then get PGR4 anyway, most complete arcade racing experience you'll ever find imo, the bikes are cool to ride and as you'd expect are a completely different experience to the cars, there's so many racing modes (like Cone Challenges, Overtake races, etc.) you're doing something new or driving in a new style at least every second or third race. Plus it looks ****ing amazing.
Lazlow
05-09-2009, 01:19 PM
I played the demo and have to disagree on nearly every point :p
There's just something weird about the way the cars handle. I know PGR tries to sit on that line between arcade and sim, but I just felt like it achieved neither. The bikes sucked horribly, but that's probably due to me playing nothing but bike sims for a long time. They are way too responsive, and I kept nailing them into the apexes of turns. And I didn't find it that visually impressive, though it was the demo, and this was one of the first release games.
So I'll probably wait for you to pass it on, and I'll probably grab Ridge Racer 6. And Sega Rally >_>
Or Outrun....

I don't know what cars you get in the demo, do you get any high performance ones?
I actually thought the same as you when first playing it, controls feeling weird, but that seemed to be limited entirely to the slower cars and bikes (and this is after I completely played PGR3 to death), but when I got onto the faster models those gripes with the controls seemed to go away and I could pull off those long drifts again and I could take corners more comfortably.

Go for it. Disgaea is pretty much the best series for that style of game. This is coming from someone who has played almost all of the top games in the genre. Just be prepared, this game has a tonne of depth and if you're after something pretty simple, you should look elsewhere.

with the school holidays coming up I'm looking for a game withlots and lots of depth that i can sink hours into. I'm not too fussed what genre, whether it's rpg, shooter, or racing etc. I'm looking for a PC, PS3, or PSP game. i already own oblivion which has eaten days of my life, and fallout 3 which i got bored of fairly quickly. I've also got Far cry 2 which was good. Disgaea was mentioned earlier which interests me, although i am a noob to stratergy rpgs, and practically all jrpgs as well.I'd probably get gran turismo 5 if it was out, what similar racers are there with so much depth? also monster hunter freedom unite has had lots of praise, but it might be too challenging for the rpg n00b i am.
Any suggestions? thanks.

Perhaps Burnout Paradise, Morrowind, The Witcher, GTA VI and for PSP maybe MGS Portable Ops / Ac!id 1/2, Puzzle Quest or Syphon Filter: Logan's Revenge.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is quite a fun game that makes use of the DS's touch screen really well. I'd recommend that.
The World Ends With You is great if you can find it. Very different with you effectively controlling two characters, one on the top screen and one on the touch screen.
Lock's Quest is a nice strategy game and easy enough that you could probably finish it in a few decent sittings.
I also like Chrono Trigger DS, but that's because I loved the SNES Chrono Trigger and haven't had a copy for years.

I bought chrono trigger for DS after hearing everyone rave about it and it scoring 10/10 in Hyper.
However, I'm having a hard time getting into it, like Fallout, which eventually I gave up on, and several other games recently. I've posted previously, I just don't seem to be into videogaming anymore, I've having a videogaming spiritual crisis. I'm not sure if I've grown out of them or all the games I'm playing are just shit. About the only game I enjoy nowadays is Pro Evo Soccer.
Chrono Trigger seems to consist of: Walk a few steps on the rails, fight a few guys, celebrate, repeat ad nauseum. Purchase better weapons to fight better opponents, essentially negating any improvement on both sides. I get pissed off when another fight starts because of the repetition.
About the only point of interest for me was the trial, but even though I won they still threw my ass in jail. It seems exceptionally linear, which I was expecting the opposite of with this game.
So what's the deal? Have I just not got into it yet? (I've only just reached the future). Is the game not as good as people say and it's just nostalgia? Is it too old to compete with modern videogames? Or have I just gone off videogaming altogether?
AranchineD
18-09-2009, 12:10 AM
It's a JRPG, of course it's linear.
Except this this Chrono Trigger, which is linear right up until you get the Epoch. From that point onward it's an entirely different experience altogether. At least try and get up to that part, and see if you still aren't enjoying the game.
As for the combat...it is kinda repetitive, yeah, but at that point in the game you don't have everybody yet, and haven't unlocked all their skills and ultimate weapons (most of which are enjoyable quests in themselves). Things could improve for you in that regard too if you want to push on in the game.

Have you played any JRPGs before? Chrono Trigger is an excellent game, my only complaint about the DS version is the text is too bloody small on the screen.
*If* you've never enjoyed 16-bit RPGs on SNES etc, and only played more modern games, then I see why you may not like this game.
Yes, there are abilities etc, muliple endings - but the combat is not going to change, the nature of the game is not going to change and if you don't enjoy the first few hours, then it's unlikely you'll enjoy the rest of it.

Umbrella Chronicles is alright, but it's too short and really not worth the money. Scribblenauts is fun if you're really creative, but if you don't want to think and just want to shoot shit, I'd go with Overkill. Probably the most fun I've had on the Wii. It's even better with two players, too.

I'm a bit surprised that they're your only options of games you're interested in that are on the shelves atm! Still, while Scribblenauts is a definite must-buy IMO, out of the two lightgun shooters definitely grab Overkill. I loved Umbrella Chronicles, especially in two-player, but the game is about to be eclipsed by the sure-to-be-superior sequel that is out soon.

It is extraordinarily deep, and has a shit-ton of content. As for difficulty, it's definitely there, but it is certainly not frustrating! It's really about being prepared, not rushing, and learning patterns (at least, in the 26 hours I've played - which hasn't got me very far) - internet FAQs are your friend! It's certainly not a game for everyone, particularly if you can't get past some of the clunky menus, the apparently "clunky" controls, and the general lack of user-friendliness of the whole thing.
When I first came up against what many call "the hardest enemy in the game" due to the difficulty spike you experience when coming up against it vs. what you're used to, the Yian Kut Ku (first wyvern you meet), it took me two or three goes or something, and that was after reading a guide. It also scared the **** out of me when I first saw it. After beating it once, maybe twice, I could go back to it and take it down with absolutely no trouble at all now - once you learn the game, and learn the monster, it's difficulty is extremely manageable and fair.
Buy it!

There was a free demo of MHFU on the PSN store a little while ago. The demo gives you three monsters to hunt down and a decent selection of weapons. I thought it was pretty tough and although I kept going back to it I've only managed to defeat one of the included monsters.

Don't know if I should get Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP. I've heard it is really hard, and I hate frustratingly hard games. I also want it cos of the depth of it as I am looking for a game with loads of depth. Any advice?
If you want a game with loads of depth, definitely buy it. It has a fairly steep learning curve, but if you're willing to invest the time then it's worth it.
As MacGuyver mentioned, there is a demo available so maybe you should try that first.
@ Watchers, I think putting the camera on a second analogue stick would be even worse. As it stands, I can adjust the camera with my left pointer finger while leaving my right thumb on the dodge/attack buttons. If I had to move my right thumb to a second analogue stick to move the camera while I was trying to roll around to dodge a monster's attacks, it would be disastrous! Being able to move the camera and dodge at the same time is a great skill to have IMO. :p
On another note, what about Pixeljunk Monsters? It's available on the PSP store and I hear it's really good, but I don't want to buy a tower defence game unless it adds something really unique to the formula...
Ashmaran
20-10-2009, 03:12 PM
Well it changes up the formula by making you control a character in order to build things and collect money / gems from defeated enemies. You can also earn bonuses, like a sprint button and the ability to lay mines. Pretty cool game!

Should I trade in for Borderlands? A mate at work has been hassling me about getting it. I am not too sure about the game itself outside of it being cellshaded and a mix between Diablo 2 and FPS. I have checked the thread but can't seem to make my mind up about it.
Just to put things in perspective - I traded in for NFS Shift a month or so ago. Bought Uncharted 2 and just finished it. Making my way thru Brutal Legend this weekend.
Was thinking of trading in Left 4 Dead, Lego Batman and something else. I really don't see myself getting back into Left 4 Dead especially since my mate traded it in and I have a feeling it might get onto the exclusion list pretty soon.

I'm not sure if I should get Saints Row 2 or not after I finish Uncharted 2 and Borderlands. It seems awesome how its like GTA 4, but with more random shit cos the random shit is what I love in GTA 4 (going on rampages and crashing motorbikes and jumping off buildings). Are the story missions in SR2 any good?

As someone who has played both games, I say FOR THE LOVE OF GOD get FIFA 10.
PES 2010 is absolutely pathetic. It's a disgrace to football, a disgrace to this generation of consoles and a disgrace to mankind as a whole. Don't even act like the games can be compared because they can't. You might as well ask us if you should eat chocolate or dirt. NO COMPARISON. I prefer the 360 pad mainly because of the triggers (I hate the PS3 'triggers', especially in a game where you have to use them nonstop like FIFA), but if you personally prefer the PS3 pad then go for it. Don't ask me if one has better online then the other because I don't actually know (but I'd naturally assume the 360 has better online :p).

Don't bother, the first 60 mins of A2 recap A1 in that "previously on assassin's creed" TV style everybody loves.
While the first game is good, it becomes a painful slog the more you play it - (yes I did complete it) where as A2 (which I've spent 20 hours on this week) is full of cool side missions, fun weapons, MUCH better story/ dialogue / cut scenes etc.
You could also spend like 5 mins reading the WIKI page for A1 (but you don't NEED to) and then play A2 no trouble.
Alternatively you could sink all your money into a new sitcom called "Everybody LOVES Desmond!", then wait for the inevitable death threats.:D
