Gamerankings: PS3 = 90%, X360 = 89% (http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?search=blazblue&numrev=3&site=)

With BlazBlue, Arc Systems Works pushes the boundaries of the fighting genre, while exploring new, penetrating ways to increase and sustain its community. They empower the player with the necessary tools to learn and build a strong foundation in a game marked by excitement and fun. BlazBlue stands as one of the best games in Arc System Works checkered catalog, and its influence will no doubt be seen in other fighting games that come out after. Take note, Capcom and SNK, of Arc Systems Works' indelible mark on online matchmaking. Their work deserves attention -- and praise -- because it exceeds expectations and delivers a thoroughly well-thought out, pragmatic, and enjoyable online experience. I can say without hesitation that BlazBlue raises the barometer on which all fighters should be judged.

Nope, no PAL release yet. PS3 version is region free, so that's what I ended up getting. According to this guy (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/member.php?u=9004) a PAL X360 version is due in Q4 this year. No idea who he works for, but all he ever does is post insider info.

I'm sad about the delayed PAL release too - kinda wish I had a PS3 at this point :(

If I see Battle Fantasia at a reasonable price in the meantime I'll pick it up, not that I don't already have more games to play than time to play them >_>

What we usually do is set up a chat room and organise matches through there. I think I have you on my friends list, next time I see you online I'll send a message. =]

Met a couple of dudes who work for the distributor of KoFXII in Australia, they said they're currently trying to get the rights to release BB here. Apparently Arc didn't contact anyone, so the distributors are now contacting them, got the impression it usually works the other way around. So virgin-play may be putting it out in Europe, and AID may do the same for us (not confirmed).

I'm really new to the whole 2d fighter thing, but I decided to go online anyway and put my mashing skills to the test. I managed to get a couple of wins in, am now at level 8 (though I'm not really sure what that means). How is it that this game is doing online matches so much smoother and lag free than street fighter 4? Also when people were using headsets it was the clearest I have ever heard them sound, and thsee guys were in the US. Outstanding effort.

UC1
22-07-2009, 11:39 PM
It has better netcode, fixed input lag + rollbacks, similar to GGPO, HDR, 2DF, etc. SF4 has random input lag, so you can't really play it against people overseas.

Are those not totally manly traits though? The fact he Falcon Punches people, can go Super Saiyan and has epic theme music (in both normal and Fu Rin Ka Zan mode) just adds to that. AND he's a Ninja.

Feri has a knack for picking these things up. He was probably Melbournes best DDR player before he became interested in Guilty Gear, so maybe there is an element of execution/timing there.

The "bogus" bluray isnt a standard dvd. Xbox got dvd, PS3 got Bluray.
Ive googled it and it seems quite a few people are having the same problem.
I contacted the ebay seller and he has asked me to send it back to him, then he'll send it to Asky (sic). Its going to be one hell of a fu(k around. PS3 LE beware.

UC1
26-07-2009, 12:42 AM
I use Ragna and Arakune, so I can give you some tips for them.

Not sure what the easiest way to do this is, but all my combos are really simple. I'll just paste what I have and then try to explain the notation.

Ragna:

Combos:

2A>B>6A>j.C>j.D>(j.c.)j.D>623D>236C>214C = 2338dmg

4B+C>66>6A>j.D>623D>236C>214C = 2718 dmg

B>C>D(2 hit)>214A = 2353

B>C>632146D

2A>B>6A>6D>j.D>(j.c.)D>623D>236C>214C

hit confirm: B>C>214A>214D

Blocked Strings:

2A>B>6A>C>D(2 hit)>214A>214D

2A>B>6A>6D>j.D>C>214A>214D

2A>B>6A>3C>2D

2A>B>6A>C>214B>214>D

Arakune:

combos:
2Ax3, 2C
Ax3, 6B
2Ax3, B
j.B, ground combo
C, air combo
6C, C, 2C (rc), 6C, C, 2C
B+C, QCFx2+C, (4), j.AA, (blackbeat without curse), QCF+C
B+C, QCFx2+C, (4), j.A, j.B+C

strings:
2Ax3, 2D
j.B (jc) QCF+D, dive (2A/B/C) ~2A/B to hit, 2C to run away and throw 6D, 2D
j.2A, j.2B, j.2C

air combos:
C, j.Ax3, QCF+C (rc), j.A, QCF+C

curse combos:
j.B, C, air combo
2Ax3, C, air combo
2A,5B,C, air combo

curse strings:
[2Dx2>6D]xN ~ works great if they're in the corner.

strats:
(j.QCF+D cloud, 6D)xN
within range, 2D (always!)
j.4/1/2/3/6D
cornered, j.44 teleport, 4A+B guard ~ escape
corner trap: [2Dx2>6D]xN
Cloud covering you, j.44 (teleport) -> cloud crosses screen

explanation:

Basically all the numbers are directions. If you look at the keypad on your keyboard, you can see what direction is what. 6 = forwards, 4=backwards, 8=up, 2=down, etc.

j. Means jump. So if you see j.C>j.D it just means hit C then D in the air.

j.c. Means jump cancel, this is just jumping as soon as you hit a move. Most characters can do a launcher (like Ragna's 6A), then some kind of ABCD chain combo (Ragna's C>D) then jump cancel into another A/B/C/D (possible chain combo again), then do a special move, like Ragna's dragon punch thing, which you can follow up with other stuff.

I must stress that I'm still a noob and this is all very easy shit. Just let me know if none of it makes sense and I can break it down a bit more.

igotnewsuper8systemWRONG!
26-07-2009, 01:07 AM
Surprisingly it does make sense, I'll still have trouble pulling it off though.

UC1
26-07-2009, 01:15 AM
I reckon start with these 2 for Ragna:

B>C>214A>214D

2A>B>6A>j.C>j.D>(j.c.)j.D>623D>236C>214C

The easy version of the 2nd one is like...

6A>j.C>623D>236C>214C

This "review"

Maybe hardcore fans will appreciate the subtle mechanics at work in KOF XII, but as fighting game fans who aren't devoted enough to count frames of animation and the like, we can't help but feel indifferent. 60/100

Translation; It's too inaccessible for me, and I cbf learning how to play it, so it must be shit

Stuff like that pisses me off. If one is not an expert in the genre/game they are reviewing, then what they have to say is of no use to any one. There are so very few fighting game reviews out there that are actually written by people who know what they are talking about. :(

Bang is really hard to play. putting a tk srk move seems a tad harsh to put into his B&B, and considering he's based around mixups it feels like hardly any of his moves are jump cancellable. I can't even beat CPU hakumen with him... I tried for hours before the kettle went off in the kitchen and safety cut power to my room. :(

I think I'm on the virge of caving.

Dungeon Crawl apparently has restock of this so I'm thinking of making a little trip down there on my lunch break. Anyone know if Dungeon Crawl sell any joysticks? I think I'll be grabbing another TE from the Capcom Store for my PS3 eventually but in the mean time I may stick with a d-pad until then unless I see something that changes my mind.

How have people found this with the d-pad?

ElPresidente

Sorry I should have said gamepad... either d-pad or analogue stick. I've noted it only has four buttons so I'm thinking this will play much more friendly than SFIV on the pad.

I've decided I'm definitely getting it and will in all likely hood just grab a HRAP 3 off PlayAsia when the cheaper ones are back in stock and just swap out the buttons for some Sanwa options later down the track.

Edit: Doh! Out of stock at DC but will be getting more in tomorrow.

Zan

Quite a lot of Melbourne players use the dual shock and bind multiple buttons for things like barrier/grab/rapid cancel. Actual moves rarely require you to press two buttons at once, and as Sox said, there are only 4 buttons.

You need to be more precise with motions though.
i.e you can spin the stick like a retard and get supers to come out.

So I caved and bought this today. Haven't had time to do much more than watch the intro and have one quick battle.

Can't make any deep comments on the game but I was surprised by the intro animation being interlaced and also the ingame graphics are not as sharp as I'd hoped (Stupid 720p).

Can't wait til work is over and I can put some time into this but I get the feeling I won't be satisfied til I get my hands on a damned PS3 stick.

*edit*

I think Noelle is going to be my girl. She's coming very naturally to me even with a pad.

Even in the VERY short time I've played it is impressing me. Feels very fluid, has all the flavour of GG which I love (though some more zany characters would not go astray - Love your avatar by the way Zan. Faust was my fav. GG character).

I love Faust, probably favourite character out there. Love his whole game plan, character design, back story. Character interactions are fantastic, I love in the last game that him and Slayer have really long philosophical chats, and Slayer invites him to go to the next world with him.

Man I'm raving. But yeah, Blazblue character design is all the more 'colourful' I think, but it lacks the crazy that you get from Daisuke design... A.B.A, Faust, Zappa etc

I Just happened to be in Dungeon Crawl today, and I picked this up. Haven't played for a huge amount of time yet, so I don't really know all the characters. Found that I did pretty okay with Noel, but she seems like this game's Ken, so I'd rather avoid her.

Really enjoyed playing as Taokaka. Hilarious character with really fun moves.

Also tried the not-Sol Badguy's story mode.

I'm a massive Guilty Gear fan, so this game is just more of that crazy awesomeness.

Also, did anyone else notice that the story mode intro movie is pretty much a straight-out remake of the Radiant Silvergun intro movie? It kind of makes sense, given that Gonzo did both movies, but I just found it really cool that they'd make that link.

Not to mention that the location of the place that the lab is in is called Ikaruga (which, to be fair, is a real town in southern Japan, but still...)

So yeah, this is basically Radiant Silvergun vs. Guilty Gear for me now. *cough*

Bang is really hard to play.

The payoff is that his super move has its own theme song.

BANG BANG BANGBANGBANG!

I've spent a bit of time with this now and wow. What a bloody brilliant game. As far as being a complete package it is the best in genre. It has everything!

Heaps of fun. Up to level 15 now after I turned a win drought around and won about 6 games straight. Finally got past the mashing phase but without a joystick I find my thumb starts to seize up in the second round which has cost me games. :P

One thing I find far too easy to do is accidently fire off barrier bursts when playing with a pad. Too much time on console shooters is hurting me as I frequently get cross over between pulling a trigger and pressing a button which may be the required missing button for a barrier burst to occur.

Frustrating. Not a fault of the game... it is all my skill using a pad with these games. No matter, joystick will fix all of this. Glee! :P

Considering "maining" either Noel or Nu at this point.

Only problem if I go Nu is that standing there and spamming her Dash attack feels horribly cheap (I actually beat a guy online using only this attack. Yes, he was terrible.)

Noel is pretty fun to play, once you work out how her Dash works with her other attacks.

Zan

Nu has a dash attack? :s

I think Stormin mean Drive... possibly in both cases. :)

Speaking of dashes though the one thing I love about this game more than anything else is how quickly the screen can be traversed. I've always been a fan of fast gameplay in fighters being able to cross much of the length of the screen with a dash or air dash really satisfies me. :)

Stormo, I recently starting doing some Nu training to understand how she works, so I can figure out how to block her stuff. :s

http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5930

This thread is unbelievably good.

First easy combo though...
DD, 4DD, 236D

Where 4 is hold back, and 236 is quarter circle forward.
It's a really nice block string. The first hit of 4D is high block, the 236D (the wheel) is low block. If they move or do a move they get hit, you can do whatever you want again. I've been learning to instant block parts of this string because it gets used on me too much. :s

Most characters have a proper ending and two alternative endings. I think as long as you get an ending with every character you can play the 'true' ending (one with cut scenes and stuff in it).

But yeah, story paths can be affected by multiple things like winning with distortion finishes and stuff. Some paths, the story continues on even if you lose.

Thinking of doing a Litchi/Taokaka themed art work with some plexiglass etching over the top.

As BlazBlue is likely to be the only game that this joystick ends up getting used for I'll be using the red buttons for A,B,C,D (Top left three and bottom left one) and the orange for the remainder.

Can't wait to plug her in and get back in to BlazBlue properly. The gamepad issues have really effected my desire to play. :(

I've seen those BlazBlue designs on a lot of custom jobs and I'm going to incorporate something similar into mine but sans the Type A and some of the other elements so I have room for my custom art.

I'm planning on actually etching the plexiglass for those elements and having the background art present a glow which should provide for a neat effect. I hope. :P

I've got a TE design on the go too which I've not done any work since I last showed off the start of Chun-Li's face. I'm planning on using blue buttons for that and paintng the bezel the same colour.

I agree that TE's look better art modded than HRAP 3s but that's what you get when you are a better looking stick from a structural design in the first place.

Also speaking of cool looking TE mods I saw this on Shoryuken. Fantastic paint job!

http://image4.play-asia.com/640/8b/pa.149725.1.jpg

Since I hate having giant joysticks for 1 fighter game I thought I might be better off with one that just has a better d-pad so I can use it for other games that'd be handy like puzzles (Lumines) yet I can whip this out for games like BlazBlue which looks absolutely gorgeous

http://www.sino-buy.com/pic/grey01.jpg

There's a few people that have reported the DPAD on the X360 doesn't register diagonal movements 50% of the time and the PS3 seems to have faulty receivers. But now that the fightpads have been out for a while I think Madcatz have addressed the issue and they work better now with a revised batch...I hope :p I also want to like these SFIV controllers because they look so goddamn awesome

Noob question: why do people use the d-pad rather than the analog stick. I thought the analog stick would act similarly to a arcade stick? Also, how do you guys use the controllers? Do you place them on a flat surface so that you can tap the face buttons and d-pad with your fingers? Wouldn't that be a bit uncomfortable compared to an arcade stick?

You can tell I don't play fighters. >_>

Zan
10-09-2009, 06:38 PM
The truth is that some people do, it's just not nearly as precise as a good d-pad or a stick. With those two it's very easy to get a feel for the 8 directions you need to register different moves, the analogue stick not so much.

/backslash
10-09-2009, 10:11 PM
And you'll also want to avoid stuffing up your analogue any further, my left stick is feeling pretty loose so I try to use the dpad when I can. When you're using something like a fightpad/Saturn controller you just hold it normally like a regular controller, some people prefer controllers to joysticks usually because of:
1. Pricing (all joysticks are different and of course the more expensive ones are usually the best)
2. Not a fighter person (less chance of using it for more than 1 game)
3. General preference, some people just don't like them

Started seriously knuckling down and trying to learn Litchi last night.

So much fun.

To be honest I was kind of worried she would be beyond me (I'd had some fleeting attempts at some of her 3C[m] combos with no luck, I couldn't make sense of how the moves were intended to work together) but last night I just sat there for 1.5 to 2 hours banging out the following over and over again til I got it right.

5B 5C(2) 3C {D} iad j.C haku staff2 dash j.BC land tsubame 6C~

The area where I was having real trouble was the IAD to j.C off the {D}. The timing was pretty tight as you have to catch them with the j.C before they land off the Manten hit. I was fretting I'd never get it but eventually I found myself dashing through the air to meet my opponent and then managing to followup with the right attacks and so on to continue the combo string.

It was SO satisfying.

I rarely play complex characters in fighters and multi-stance characters are, as you would guess, even more of a rarity for me. To be able to break the back of this, admittedly rather basic, Litchi combo has really upped the desire I have to play this game.

Even better is that with timings significantly more strict than those of many characters I play in other fighters I really do feel this is tightening up my play across the board and draining what vestiges of button mashing I had from my playstyle.

At least it feels that way. :P

Also I'd started compiling combo lists, etc from Dust Loop to make a personal guide to Litchi that would use iconography for displaying move lists rather than the standard 1 - 9 annotation syle (it still isn't second nature to me yet :P).

Anyway things kind of got out of hand...

http://members.iinet.net.au/~elpresidente/litchi-guide-preview.gif
Just some page samples

:P

I'll send it out to anyone who wants it when its done and will try and grab permission from the authors whose work I'm compiled into this so I can pop her up as something Litchi noobs can download from the What's a Litchi Thread over there.

It is just a nicer way of presenting the information than forum print outs. :P

Oh and of course there is the whole announcement of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift.

Blazblue : Continuum Shift

What is coming in the new version:
At least 2 New Characters. Tsubaki is the only one confirmed so far.
Stages have been redone.
Many System changes.
All existing characters receive new moves.
New Beginners mode in the Arcade version, allows for easy specials and combos.

New Characters:

Tsubaki is a multi-hit character, beginner friendly. Her drive is called 'Install' which allows her to power up her special moves.
The second character is not confirmed but is believed to be Terumi/Hazama.

New Stuff for Old Characters:
Arakune: New ways to get curse.
Carl: Has a new projectile with Nirvana.
Rachel: Has a new Distortion Drive.
Jin: Has a new Distortion Drive.
Ragna: Has a new dive attack.

You'll find some scans on the Dustloop Forums from Famitsu but here's the design of Tsubaki (who is an existing character from the canon - she was trained in the Novus Orbis Librarium along-side Jin, Noel and - for a short time - Carl) in her battle gear. Looks like she has a Nox Nyoctes given how different her fighting get-up is compared to standard NOL garb.

http://members.iinet.net.au/~elpresidente/tsubaki.jpg

This could very well end up being what PAL regions get when the PAL BB is released.

Looks awesome.

System

- Burst becomes GG style, stock up to 2 bursts
- Burst no longer have damage penalty
- You start with 1 burst in round 1, and get 1 more burst per round, can stock two. So if you don't use your burst round one, you end up with 2 in round 2, but you can not stack anymore after that.

Been spending time playing on Hell difficulty over the past few days. I'm actually quite impressed by the AI performance. It does actually feel your opponents get better rather than cheaper is that makes sense.

Either way it is making for some great training in finding openings with Litchi as her start-ups are generally so damned slow and I often get punished for missing an opening.

I wonder what prompted the changes to Barrier Burst.

It's far too punishing really. Matchups with zoners and nonsense like the Clap loop would've been a bit easier to handle with normal bursts to help stop being overwhelmed. No barrier and 1.5x damage is pretty lame.

I still have the same problem with AI in this game that I do with Guilty Gear... fall for the same blockstrings, always block overheads and mixups, and will psychically DP/counter/super/whatever you.

ElPresidente

It is certainly the reason I never burst.

I've only done it once in a match where its use was appropriate and that was simply when I was on my last legs in the middle of a combo that looked like it was never going to end. But outside of these last stand style situations I've found no application for it. Barrier loss hurts but I can deal with it. An additional 50% damage? Not on your Nelly. :P

I don't even know if I'm that sold on the art work. It is really out of step with the general feel of the game. It feels very urban which is far from the world of BlazBlue.

Sadly the 360 version isn't region free.

I've been waiting for this to be released for ages. I've played it a few times on a friends PS3 and I love it just as much as I loved the Guilty gear games. Sadly I probably won't get it straight off the bat since there's a lot of games being released in March.

Played a few rounds with CPS2 last night. Lots of fun despite getting my arse kicked on a regular basis. Didn't help that his favoured characters are the two I can't get a handle on (Taokaka and Arakune) but playing his v-13 was awesome (he kicked my arse obviously) as it gave me a chance to work out how to avoid the phantom blades Nu constantly shoot out.

I'm sure there are better tactics out there but my trusty mantenbo works well when planted to sneak a hit in once the blades start going. Of course this meant that CPS2 simply started taking me down with melee attacks instead of sitting back and dealing damage from afar but I was pleased to know I had acquired at least one new technique in my playtime.

On the subject, I have to say what an amazing thing muscle memory is. I've not touched BB since about September last year and when I stopped I had only just started getting my head around Litchi (as CPS2 will be able to attest when I embarrassingly tried my hand at other characters like Noel and Jin... Litchi is the ONLY one I can now play and not button mash with... seriously... I mean was I was getting whupped at Litchi, you don't wanna know how badly it went with the others :P).

Anyway, I came into the game last night after an extended session at the pub and I honestly couldn't remember my BnB for Litchi as the game was loading. I was going over it in my head but couldn't remember the opener, what caused the launch in the middle, how I was supposed to close the gap to continue to combo... etc.

I won't lie and say it all came back the minute the game opened but by the second round I remembered what needed to be done. It didn't all come off (that air dash in the middle is annoying enough to nail when I've been playing regularly :P) but my hand still knew the basics. My timing was off on some moves but I knew the moves were correct.

Anyway forgive the aside. Muscle memory fascinates me.

Anyway... once again... great games last night and I can proudly say I did get one victory in (out of the 15 or so matches played :P).

Worth watching just for the Sol tribute at the end. For those that don't understand, the combo Sol does is called the dust loop, which is where the GG/BB site got it's name. Ragna's following combo is a drive loop.

I really appreciate how much of Ragna is a salute to Sol, despite the fact that they are really quite different.

Just in the the same vein as ElPrez though, this is the combo video that fits so well why I this is my favourite character in any game pretty much ever:

started playing ranked matches today and only hit level 5. I'm maining Noel and my sub character is alternating between Jin and Taokaka. Came up against so many Tager and haku-man players which just so happen to be the 2 characters I struggle against as Noel. In the same case majority of people I got matched against were level 30+. I did almost beat a level 51 Nu player losing by the smallest of margins in the 3rd round.

Found it funny that some guy PM'd me telling me to stop overusing Noel's drive attack when to my experience it's one of the key factors to her larger combos. (mind you some of the uses were my failed attempts at activating her DD attack >.<)

Anyone want to hit me up for some player matches just either add me to your live friends list and hit me up when I'm online (also can look me up via the "hyper gamertags" user) or send me your gamertag via PM and I'll add you.
