Post about upcoming gigs you are attending or think people might be interested in. Then feel free to drop in after and give a review on performances, spread the word on awesome live acts etc.
I'm going to The Butterfly Effect next friday at Metro City. Suppost bands are Dead Letter Circus and Calling All Cars. Pretty excited, haven't seen TBE live for about 2 and a half years now and have been dieing for a chance to see DLC live.
Calling All Cars are pretty terrible, just be warned.
I'm going to see The Gutter Twins at the Athenaeum Theatre this day next week. Finally being able to watch Mark Lanegan will complete my QOTSA experience :)
I'm probably going to see Elvis Costello in October, maybe even Matisyahu. And obviously I'll be going to see Pearl Jam in November (the worst kept secret in Australia).
Oh and I went to see COG two weeks ago, they blew me away. Their older tracks are nice and proggy, just how I like it.

DOOD, so there!
I saw TBE at Big Day Out this year, the sundown set on the Green Stage. They are so much more suited to the smaller stages. Was unspeakably epic, how did you miss that one?
Also saw them at Metro Freo, but was totally ruined by these crowd surfing assholes. They were the same guys, over and OVER, they were big, and were ****heads when I politely asked them to stop. Hard to enjoy a band while being battered in the back of the head. They were not even fans, didnt see them singing or rocking out or nothing. Wankers.
I saw DLC at Amplifier in December last year, I got in for free because a girl had free tix and asked me if I wanted to be their plus 1. I also met my GF at that gig, not the same girl BTW. We broke up in April, but hey we gave it a shot. Great night.

I don't understand why Triple J keeps playing their song lately... they may as well play Hinder, or Nickleback, they're all easily interchangable O_o

Triple J is a disgrace to music. As far as I can tell...Triple R is one of the few decent stations around.

I got tickets to AC/DC in March :P So pumped for that gig.
Last gig I actually saw was Gyropscope supporting The Living End. I've never been so disappointed with a crowd in all my life. Both bands were playing their heart's out, but the crowd was ignorant to pretty much everything but the singles off the latest album (which sucks, considering The Living End is on the 5th studio album and had a few EPs before that). I don't think they'll be playing an all ages gig again.

haven't seen TBE for years, kinda lost interest with Imago, but the new album is actually really enjoyable - quite keen to see it played live.

False. They've already confirmed one act (can't remember who).
All Tomorrow's Parties is cancelled though. Massive sad face.

This. Last few gigs I've gone to without friends I've actually had more fun with randoms i met in line than i normally do with my friends anyway. Probably because most my friends don't like live gigs as much as i do and i have to force them to come in the first place. =\

I missed Sugar Army, I was sinking beer at the Sail and Anchor and eating pizza with my mate who works at Pizza Bellaroma. 8.50 pint of Sail beer vs. 6.50 EB stubbie...Sorry Sugar Army, I'll catch you next time...I shoulda got there earlier. Woulda loved to be right up front.
BTW Perth people, go see Voyager and Chaos Divine at Amplifier on the 31st. Great bands, but what I love about Amps these days (the only thing I love about Amps these days!) is the confused vacuous nightclub snobs who have taken over the place in the last few years. When you sit in the beer garden ignoring the bands, only tottering past in your high heels and hoop earrings to take a piss, then you can GET ****ED!

Was going to see Jane's Addiction next week but their drummer has been hospitalised so that is $90 down the drain.
Seeing Marilyn Manson (begrudgingly) in October, and I am ultra pumped for DevilDriver, Shadows Fall and LAMB OF GOD in December.
Did anyone else see The Gutter Twins last night?
Absolutely fantastic. Lanegan's voice is so atmospheric. And out of the blue they covered Three Hours by Nick Drake, it just so happens to be my favourite Nick Drake song. Beautiful stuff...

Ok, The Siren Towers double a side launch on friday, great night. 4 bands, 3 of them amazing, the last wasnt bad but just rubbed me the wrong way, quite vocally weak compared to the others imo. Line up was BOOM!BAP!POW!, The Sun Orchestra(Formerly known as Cirtcuits of the Sun), The Chemist (\m/) and of course The Siren Tower.
BOOM!BAP!POW! are infectious. They have an oldschool blues/swing kind of sound really set off by the inclusion of sax. You can't help but bop along to these guys. Awesome to see a female singer with a good, powerful voice with the guys supplying some almost barbershop backup vocals. The band all wear suit paint and shirt with tie while Novac(awesome name) had on quite a nice black dress with sticking, really cementing their oldschool style imo. Got a chance to talk to Novac and Paul, both really nice people.
The Sun Orchestra was the letdown of the night for me. While i was really excited by the inclusion of a slide guitar, his voice was way to feminine. And the main vocalist just sounded a bit whiney to me. What they did with a friend painting a picture through a sheet off to the side was a cool idea though.
The Chemist is more like The Mad Scientist, Ben Witt returned to the stage straight after The Sun Circuit to front his own band and really went off. He is a madman, an insane genius. Vocals and guitar reminded me a bit of Muse. Love the inclusion of unorthodox sounds including old batteres cymbals/cowbell, what appears to be plastic jars full of sand slammed together right in the front of a mic for a nice 'boom' sound and an oldschool mic that sounds like an old radio broadcast. Oh and Ben's descriptions of songs was classic.
Finally, The Siren Tower capped the night giving it a strong send off. I can really see this band going far, though considering the history of its members its really impossible for them no to. Only letdown was the bass players affection for pulling classic rock powerstances that really don't suit the music style. >_>
Excellent performance, will never forget Grants comments leading into on of their song, "this is about knowing when something has a hold of you and you just have to break its ****ing arms!". >_<
Awesome night overall, glad i braved the weather and still went.

With another Timeout Concert (local all day festival) gone, I'll say it again; Hilltop Hoods are the most boring group to hear live. They try their hardest to perform all the requisite mugging and posturing, but their songs are burdened with the same 4/4 beat and tempo that they blend seemlessly together, until you want them to shut the f*** up.
One song is enough.

Personally, Im one of those crazy die hard arctic monkeys fans. Got to meet them when they did a their first tour of Australia. I saw them a second time for their tour of Aus for the second album and now im going for my hatrick. Where did you see them last time blue?
They were at Festival Hall. Then they came back, and my mates saw them, but I wasn't fussed. It was too soon after the other time, and they hadn't released any new material. Now, my mates aren't that fussed about seeing them a third time, but I'll probably quite enjoy it.
For the record, I loved the first record, hated the second, quite liked Shadow Puppets, and haven't even bothered to listen to anything off the third album, as Crying Lighting is pretty crap.
Not bothering with Them Crooked Vultures now. They're charging way too much.

Sugar Army are really good live, their shows have been getting progressively better and better as they've matured as a band, but they're still pretty low on material so their gigs are always disappointingly short. Still, it was a good time.

Really? When i saw them supporting Karnivool they had a horrendous live sound. I don't mind their songs usually but i just wanted to chase them off the stage.

When was that? I saw them at the WAMIs and they seemed pretty unpolished. Their album launch they were really psyched up and it was a great show, really good stage energy and stuff, but still a little raw. Saturday they were just finishing off their first big national tour as headliners, I think, but they seemed a lot more together on stage, and their music was really tight.
I really do think they're a great live show, I was hoping they'd be at BDO, it'd just add to an already good lineup.

Anyone happen to want to buy four tickets for Placebo in London? >_>

xpost from Metal thread cause some people don't read both.
Slayer/Megadeth were good, though I would have preferred to be in standing rather than seats, but whatever. Megadeth, I dunno, Dave Mustaine's vocals just sound tired and were getting completely drowned out by the music. Maybe that was just Challenge Stadium being a shitty venue, I dunno.
Slayer were ****ing awesome though. It felt like your body was just being pounded by a wall of sound, and the vocalist was easily audible (so I don't think it was the venue) and ****ing intense. Slayer just went so much harder than Megadeth. Also they had FIRE.

Final round of a Battle of the Bands at the Rosemount tonight. Winner gets sent to Sydney sometime next year. My mates band is in it. Last few rounds have been pretty decent. If you're in perth a suggest coming to check it out. Tickets are $25 at the door, starts at 8.

So, Karnivool tomorrow night. I know Fearofthesky will most likely be there but anyone else going? Also going to the after party at Rocket Room?

13-12-2009, 01:50 AM
We went. We saw. We rocked! Rocket Room continues to impress me a lot. Where else in Northbridge can you hear metal? Nowhere, thats where. Except maybe Black Betty's, but that place is rubbish. And I like how they have water in a jug on the bar. More places should do that.
Just got back from Dream Theater. Incredible.

Bands at Amplifier last night were all amazing. Arms like Branches, Wolves, Place of Indigo and Eunuch Schools all acts to keep an eye out for. If you have a chance to see any of these, especially the first three i highly recommend it. Wolves are also playing with The Chemist (best band in perth atm imo) at Newport tonight.
EDIT: Totally fell in love with the violinist from Wolves last night too. ^_^

I have tickets for Pavement, Pixes, The Mars Volta and Daniel Johnston. It's going to be a good 1st quarter of 2010.
Also, my girlfriend got tickets for Patrick Watson...and she didn't want to go alone. So I'll be seeing him as well.

I just got a ticket to see No Fun At All. Last time they played in Melbourne, I think The Vandals were on the same night, and I chose the Vandals. Might get one for AFI too, though I am seeing them at soundwave.

I'm headed along to that show as well, but primarily to see the Flatliners. Also got Polar Bear Club, The Weakerthans, Spinnerette, Alexisonfire/Comeback Kid/Anti-Flag and, of course, Soundwave in the next couple of months.
Gonna be busy for internationals!

Just got back from seeing Patrick Watson. I've never really listened to his stuff, but my girlfriend loves him and demanded I go with her....turns out he (and the band) is pretty freaking great.
Also, support band was a little solo act by the name of Pikelet. Just a girl, some mixing gear and a few instruments that she played, recorded and then looped as the beat. I bought her album. She was magnificent. (and she's from Melbourne;))

Why go to any gig at all then, really?
Of course, it depends on whether they were just playing the songs as they just were on their album, or if they really took advantage of it being live and all and changed up things in the songs.

I have a big week of live music next week. Seeing the Decemberists at Billboards tomorrow night, Big Day Out on Australia Day and then on Friday I might be seeing Dead Letter Circus.
In recent weeks;
Yeah Yeah Yeahs were awesome.
Moby was awesome.
Dirty Three were awesome.
Them Crooked Vultures were awesome.
Next week it's BDO, Mastodon and Laneway...likely outcome; awesome.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs were awesome.
I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeah's at Southbound and was not particularly impressed, it was like listening to really bad Suzie Quatro. Their crowd shrunk fast too, I don't think it went well for them.
Southbound was pretty sweet, Kaki King, Seasick Steve and Philly J's were all standout acts. I really dug Gabriela y Rodrigues (or however you want to spell it) and and King Khan and the Shrines too, though it was my first time hearing them. Moby and Temper Trap were both solid, with most other acts being pretty good too. Sugar Army were a big disappointment, playing completely out of time and badly, but I heard later their earpieces weren't working at all, and the drummer couldn't hear anything anyone else was playing. Still a disappointment, regardless of the reason. I'm hoping it'll be a better show from them at BDO.
Acts I really didn't dig other than Yeah Yeah Yeahs were Liam Finn and the Editors. I didn't bother to go see Wolfmother, Hilltop Hoods or Paul Dempsey, I knew I wouldn't like them.

Kind of let this thread die for a while, time for a bump i think.
Got a few gigs coming up, already have my tickets for Dead Letter Circus(June 12), Birds of Tokyo(June 10) and Karnivool(July 21). Still trying to decide if i also want to go to Gyroscope.
For those of you in Perth I strongly suggets checking out The Chemist on the 21st at the Rosemount Hotel. It's their EP launch and I believe also their last show before they relocate over east. Probably one of the best bands around at the moment, they put on a great show. Wolves are supporting them too and they're great.
Finally, went to see Eleventh He Reaches London on Friday. Met up with fearofthesky there. Was a great show though kind of wish they'd played more of their new stuff as I don't really know the old that well. Still was a good performance, great energy.

I saw Vampire Weekend at Festival Hall last week. Was pretty cool. I saw Andrew O'Keefe from Deal or No Deal in the crowd. After the show we saw him again and we yelled out "No Deal". He turned around and looked pretty angry. Luckily he didn't know where we were yelling from.

Seeing as it's already been bumped i guess i could post some of my upcoming gigs.
This weekend Young Heretics are playing at Amps with a mates band, Arms Like Branches, as one of the supporting acts.
6th of August is PVT at the Rosemount. Hope they don't just play the new album as I haven't managed to pick it up yet and I love O Soundtrack My Heart.
13th August will most likely head down to Rocket Room to see Tangled Thoughts of Leaving again. Always play entertaining sets and one of the chicks behind the bar there is hawt.
14 August is back to Amps for Wolves, once again with Arms like Branches in support. Money from the show goes towards their fund for recording in America. So if you're in Perth come down!
21st August is Dead Letter Circus at Capitol again. They were amazing last month so excited that they're coming around again so soon!
Finally I have Art Vs Science at Capitol on the 4th of September.
Busy times ahead it seems.

Just came back from seeing Surfer Blood at the The Corner Hotel. It was a fun gig and Surfer Blood even played a few new songs. One of which was first time it had ever been played. Also the support band, Papa vs Pretty, were pretty cool.

So anyone plan on seeing the Gorillaz? Tickets go on sale 6th of August and jusging by ticket prices in other countries will be between 80 and 100 dollars. Not too bad considering how many artists are involved. I'll most likely go, because they've been playing music from their previous two albums as well (I only thought Plastic Beach was OK).

Alternatively, Injured Ninja (http://www.facebook.com/Injuredninja) are playing at Mojos. Both will be amazing gigs, if your not at one of them you probably should kill yourself.
