Discuss Shin Megami Tensei here.

Last I heard, the next installments (don't know which spin-offs franchises) will (or has) been released on handheld consoles.

Great way to start a thread.

Anyway.

The PSP remake of the first game in the Persona series was released in Japan a couple of months ago. They're planning a US localisation.

SMT: Devil Survivor for the DS has been released in Japan and the US (not sure about Aus) and all reports are saying that it's pretty damn good. If I didn't have a whole pile of unfinished DS games already, I'd look at getting it.

Got SMT: Devil Survivor on import and I'm absolutely loving it. Great to see that they moved the series to handheld as well as having console. SMT: DS feels like a mix between any JSRPG, Dragon Quest (closest series I can compare to when it comes to the feel of the battles when you attack an enemy), and The World Ends with You (in terms of story, being caught in a closed off area of Tokyo).

I've been trying to find a copy of Lucifer's Call recently but sadly Dungeon Crawl sold out about 2 weeks ago and no where else has it. Guess I'll be looking at play-asia.

Looks like there is going to be another SMT game released in Japan for the DS later this year. I wonder if this is going to be a complete move or if they'll go back to home console instead of handheld.

I've started playing Devil Survivor, really enjoying it .. I'm loving the SMT games now!! :D

I wonder if this thread belongs in General gaming, given SMT isn't only on the Sony systems anymore? Not a big deal either way.

The battle system in Devil Survivor is like combining Fire Emblem and you're typical JRPG turn based fighting into one .. works quite well indeed.

I like how the game progresses in a "point and click" style .. keeps the story moving, and interesting. Also loving all the districts of Tokyo you visit, bringing back memories of my time in Japan earlier this year, it's quite authentic as well :)

Great game, worth picking up!

That just reminded me that i have to go back to playing digital Devil Saga 2. Haven't been able to get my hands on 1 sadly. both that and person 4 have been on hiatus for a while for me.

As for Devil Survivor. That's on hiatus till I replace me DS which is slowly dieing on me.

*lovingly paws his collection of all the PS2 SMT games bar the most recent Raidou title*

I'd sympathise with you folk looking for copies of Lucifer's Call or DDS1 but I just can't. ;)

Actually I can... I had lost my Lucifer's Call CD about twelve months ago and just yesterday when busting out Dune: A Spice Opera (the soundtrack to the original CD-ROM Cryo title) for a listen I found the damned thing in the audio cd's case.

I was a happy Prez since hunting down another copy would make this my third purchase of the game and I'm over the idea of buying it yet again. :D

I'm up to the last dungeon in DDS1. It's fair easy by SMT standards, so if you're a veteran then battles and party management should be cake since you don't have to recruit demons. I've got both DDS but I haven't played 2 yet. Local EBs should have some copies, every time I walk in one I find at least 1 SMT game (I'm in melb).

I tried playing through P3:FES. Im almost up to the second full moon. Like DDS1, Lucifer's Call and Devil Summoner, this has been put on hiatus too. I just can't seem to finish a SMT game. Lucifer's Call was hard from the start but the obelisk just raped me. Those damn sisters.

I intend to get P4 and the new Raidou game but I need a good place to buy them, preferably cheap.

Ahaha, I join Prez in having all the SMT PS2 games.. aside from Raidou 2 (;_; please release it here, Atlus) *strokes them lovingly in a prez-like fashion*

P3P looks pretty horrible, actually. I don't really like what they've done to the gameplay. That said, it's Megami Tensei, and I'll probably buy it *sigh*
P4 with a female character though.. I'd be all over that.. and Yosuke <_____<

FF Freak

Raidou 1 is the only one I'll be missing once my copy of Nocturne arrives in the mail and short of finding a second hand copy on Ebay (which I won't try) I don't like my luck. I do hope Raidou 2 gets a release here.

As for devil Survivor. Currently just started day 4. I got really really lucky on beldr, especially after he got healed by 2 Cait Sith's. Beat him first go.

:D Yeah, I'm up to the final day on Devil Survivor, it's just that Dissidia has my attention at the moment <_<

I was lucky enough to find almost all of my SMT games brand new at various EB's and JB's around the city and Camberwell, with the exception of Lucifer's Call (found it pre-owned at EBGames Swanston St) and Digital Devil Saga 1 (which I went to Dungeon Crawl to get)
I'm thinking of just sticking it and importing Devil Summoner 2- Atlus have said that they have no plans on releasing it here. Only problem is that *MY* PS2 isn't chipped, but my Housemate's is (Meaning when I move out, it'll be unplayable, or I'll have to find someone to chip it)

I'm still chugging my way through Giantbomb's Persona 4 Endurance run - I'm not sure where they're up to cos I'm like 4 weeks behind, but the "miss" inaba beauty pageant just happened, that was... disturbing.

It amazes me how much story they put into Persona 4, it really is remarkable. I have a feeling something really bad is going to happen to Nanoke, they mentioned her school on tv, then she got sick, I figure within a few episodes she'll be kidnapped! :(

They've gotten a lot better at playing, it's far less cringe-worthy now.

I'm amazed that Play-asia doesn't have Raidou 2 since it's been out for ages in the US. It's probably the only US release of a SMT game they don't have. Sadly the original Devil Summoner is out of print so guess I might have to try my luck with second hand copies if I can't find a brand new copy.

And looking at the fact you mentioned Camberwell Kasplatza you obviously live around the same area as I do :P

I liked persona 4, I really did, but I stopped playing it when you go off to rescue Nanako , it started getting a little too tedious.

This morning however I decided to throw it back in because I really want to finish the game. I was enjoying it despite the fact that it was a tedious grind, I made it a few more floors up in the current dungeon and I was kicking ass, I picked up a few levels and won a few shuffle times, then I remembered why I stopped playing this game. One enemy gets the advantage in a battle, they do megadiolia twice, everyone is dead, that's 20 mins of my life completely and utterly wasted.

FF Freak
07-09-2009, 10:47 AM
lol that's what usually happens to me. 1 wipe that loses 20+ minutes worth of progression usually leads to me taking a break from the game. I'm currently at the start of the void dungeon but not because of that sort of thing...that last happened to me in Marukyu striptease which I was able to play through because i wanted Rise XD

I'm really digging these SMT games, even though I've only played Devil Survivor and watched my girlfriend play Persona 4.

While a Pal release would be nice it's probably unlikely. Hell even the US release was very limited and I'm having trouble finding where I can buy it online that way.

What I'm interested in is what the second SMT DS game will be like whether RPG or sticking to strategy, and whether both the Persona 2 games will get a PSP port.

Kasplatza Red
17-09-2009, 06:21 PM
From what I've seen, Strange Journey is going to be more like an oldskool Megami Tensei game- first person dungeons and all. Not really terribly interested in it at the moment, but probably because I havn't been following it.

Also, I'm stuck in Devil Survivor. I havn't played it in a while becuase of it. (up to the last day, which just seems like there's going to be a massive boss like, every hour :S)

FF Freak

took a look at a gameplay trailer on atlus's youtube page and the first person aspect looks really interesting.

Kasplatza Red
17-09-2009, 07:41 PM
P3P's gameplay still looks like eh. It's gone from 50% dating sim to about 75%. Still, new social characters and P4's social link system may make me buy it in due time. Looks like there might actually be enough content to warrant me purchasing it again (I only own FES :P)

Persona PSP, on the other hand, yum. People are poopoo-ing it becuase of the sound, but as long as the sound isn't like the .hack games, I'll be perfectly fine. I'm really looking forward to it.

FF Freak
17-09-2009, 08:04 PM
lol I know what ya mean about the sound in the .hack games. I was so glad the second series wasn't as bad as the original.

The thing about Persona Portable is the fact that it's a direct port with I think graphical upgrades. I hadn't heard anything about any major sound/music upgrades.

One thing that would have me sold on P3P is if it comes with the FES content. I don't have FES and I can't bring myself to forking out more money on the same game for the extra story. I know with P3P I'm interested enough in the changes that will be made to accommodate the female lead that I'll probably get it.

Counting down the days and 6 days till my copy of Persona Portable gets shipped XD (provided no delays on play-asia's behalf)

Only just able to actually do stuff now .. haha .. so far I'm enjoying it, characters seem pretty good and kind of "similar" to the Persona 4 counterparts :p

Interesting how in this one, they all knew about Personas already.

One thing I found different was that in battles, it seems like I can't have direct control over my party! So I assume this was added in Persona 4? I would have preferred direct control, but it looks like I might only have tactics to work with this time. Do I get direct control of my party later on or something, or is that just how it works in this one?

FF Freak

Damn straight, prez!
One thing I'm noticing about DDS2 is that it's a LOT more linear than the first. Not a bad thing for sure. It also plays a lot... faster. I'm up to the third dungeon, I'm only like, level 16. I need to do some grinding <_<

Also, Roland is pretty darn awesome.

Yeah, it's alright. The battles are a bit sluggish, but eh. It's on hiatus until I finish DDS2 and devil survivor- two megaten games at once is my limit >_>

FF Freak
12-10-2009, 12:04 AM
I got about 4-5 on hold due to my thesis...and the fact that friends got me into Aion. battles are definitely sluggish compared to p3 and p4. I suck at befriending monsters and getting cards but progressing decently. I find it awkward the way xp is split at the end of battle, still trying to work out the exact mechanics of that.

Kasplatza Red
12-10-2009, 11:42 PM
there's a standard amount, but then it's also based on participation.
I must be like, the only person who was swimming in spell cards by the start of the second dungeon- try to max out the 'eager' stat to make them give you your card. pay attention to the personality traits each demon has, too (for example, 'foolish' demons will react well to the 'bribe' command, and 'Joyful' demons tend to like Mark Dancing Crazy (!)) Snappish ones still have me stumped, I seem to remember one of Maki's commands working alright on them..

I had fun on the second boss. by the time you get to second boss you're gonna want to switch out your protagonists persona as his starting one will allow him to get 1-shot by Megidola. Spent a lot of time rezzing him that battle.

Started playign Devil Survivor again. knocked out days four, five and half of six over the last 2 days. Currently stuck on the gin v azuma battle but only because I've made some stupid tactical mistakes. I also didn't save keisuke, though I guess the payoff was I did Mari's battle and got access to beign able to make 2 unique demons.

borgster101
11-11-2009, 05:40 PM
I'm stuck on that boss where you need Mari (sp?) to do the finishing blow .. haven't played it in a while .. my last attempt I was so close, but then I ended up killing the boss myself .. ARGH. Why are Mari's attacks soooo weak! I could just skip this event and continue .. but I wanted to save Mari! :(

FF Freak
11-11-2009, 10:25 PM
for me Mari's attacks got stronger as the fight went on...first round she did 70 then second time it was 150...she only needed two because I'd burnt the boss down to 150 by her second attack.

You can skip that fight and still save her by giving Kaido Mari's bag in an event earlier. But as I said before you get 2 unique demons available for fusion after winning (both are level 46 uniques). The other battle at that time is the one that leads to saving Keisuke by stopping him from passing judgment on people.

Cool, I'll have to get back to it when I knock over a few other games.

I've been slowly playing through Persona 3 as well, and I'm thinking to myself, damn when I finally finish this, there's still another 30 hours in "The Answer" :p

Kasplatza Red
23-11-2009, 10:09 AM
IMO, The Answer isn't worth it. It'd just more dungeon crawling with some badly written backstory that wasn't needed.

I just finished Digital Devil Saga 2, which has officially become the first videogame to make me cry. I'm taking a break from Megaten now (all my Megaten games are packed away at my parents' house, waiting for me to move), but the next game on the list is Lucifer's Call. Wish me luck. S:

borgster101
03-01-2010, 06:07 PM
So I've got back into Persona 3 a bit .. here's the latest progress, I'll spoiler tag it just in case.

Went to the beach, Junepi did what I expected to .. though then I got to have hug moment with Yukari .. awww, stupid Junepi comes and interrupts! :p

The robot girl joins the party, and she/it is pretty good .. so I think I might continue with her. Defeated another full moon boss, with those freaky guys finally appearing .. dude in the white and the nerdy kid in green.

Then the dog joins the party as well! What the?! And it looks like the young kid Ken will most likely fight with us soon too.

Argh ... this is where the only being able to take 3 others with you in fights gets a little frustrating, as you can either mix up your party and end up with a weaker team as a result .. or specialise with the same people only to not have the experience with others. I usually like to see what the new party member is like before I decide whether I should "dump" someone else, but the decision gets harder the more you progress! :p

So ... yeah I'm enjoying it, but Persona 4 was indeed a better game.

FF Freak

I gotta get back into my SMT games. even Persona portable I restarted and haven't had a chance to progress far. P4 I'm stuck at the void dungeon, Devil Survivor I'm up to day 5 or 6 (can't remember which), Lucifer's call I in the digital travel space (can't remember what it's called) and Digital Devil Saga I'm can't remember what i was up to and DDS2 is sitting there collecting dust.

Ten hours into P3 - The Answer. Not having too many problems with the difficulty at the moment, thankfully. A bit annoying how you can't have full HP/SP before boss fights since you gotta go through the floors, but I suppose this makes it more challenging. The random fights can be quite tough but it's all good after you've scanned them.

Oh really? That's interesting, I really need to play P4 then. I felt that the story of The Answer wasn't too ambitious anyway, which is good. It merely enhanced the original plot as opposed to extending it, and wrapped up some loose ends.

I guess Persona 4 is going to have to wait until my next holidays (December-January).

Taking work out of the work-life-game equation meant I racked up 34 hours on Persona 4 these holidays, but I'm only up to August (I swear the game must be 80 hours long @_@), so I'll have to finish it next holiday break. Which is sad, really, because all I want to do is play it - it's a wonderful game, and I'm in love with absolutely every single thing about it. Fortunately I have the real soundtrack (so that when I speak to people during lunch breaks I can play "Youthful lunch"), art book (on its way), Mozilla Firefox Persona and desktop wallpaper to get me through until then...

...now where can I buy some Teddie figurines?

I ****ing love Persona 4. I can't wait for the anime and I'm going to be all over the Vita port and the 360 fighting game.

They better not streamline P4's wonderful, immersive gameworld (I love Inaba!) like they did when they converted P3 to PSP (visual novel presentation does not suit).

Also, Persona 5 can't come soon enough <3

EDIT: Hell yes! By the looks of it, strolling through Inaba has been kept in the game. (http://i52.tinypic.com/2z7l6ia.jpg) Also, there's a new area that you can bike to. I honestly haven't had a problem with P3P's streamlined system on a portable, it cut out a lot of tedium when you consider there are only so many environments in the game and you're visiting them again and again and again. It does miss some of the animation during dialogue, but the story retains its impact.

That said, a more traditional port of P4 is not unwelcome. Totally down for a fighting game with Persona 3 & 4 characters, too. Chie for god tier.
