View Full Version : New Game "+"

What are your favourite games with New Game "+" or similar?
My fav
*Resident Evil 2 - four scenarios meant you could play the game 4 times to completion to "really" finish it one time.
*Chrono Trigger - awesome replay value.
*Spider-Man: Web of Shadows - finished the game, then started again with full upgrades and flew/swung through the game pretty fast. Good fun.
*Dead Space - Finished this one, then couldn't wait to power through the game with maxxed out weapons and the level 6 suit kicking the ass of those freaky necro-morph bastards.
[EDIT: Sorry, to clarify I'm talking about games that once completed, allow you to play through again on the same save file, often allowing you to keep things you earned the first time around or allow extra things to be unlocked (levels, costumes, alternate scenarios, bonus modes of play etc etc) Say for example you could include God of War 2 as it allows a "new game+" , but not God of War 1 - which does not. The term "New Game+" I think was mainly used for Squaresoft games - for example Crono Trigger .
I forgot to add what I really meant in the topic, forgetting that people would not automatically know what the term "new game+" means.
Grand Theft Auto doesn't really fit the description I've used above, but I would include ALL GTA PS2/3 games from GTA III onward seeing as after the credits roll, there is more game to play, and that is essentially what New Game+ means to me.

Are you asking what games are worth playing more than once? Is that the question? I don't know. New game '+'?
I think he means when a game gives you special rewards for finishing it once that you can carry over into the next playthrough - like RE4. I think that's what he means. Am I on the money AN?

Ok, well yes, RE4. That's the only game I've played more than once.
edit - Actually, that's a lie. I've finished Megaman 1 and 3 countless times.

New Game plus is the ability to start a new game with the items, abilities or some such.
E.g. Prototype allows you to start a new game and you have access to all the powers and upgrades you have unlocked. Makes getting some of the earlier challenges easier and makes getting the "Don't die" achievement much easier also. Also, it's fun to tear shit up, especially some of the earlier bosses that might have given you trouble. :P

Fair enough. Reading over my previous post, it did seem like I still didn't understand the thread (with the inclusion of Megaman)....but I do;)

I remember caining through RE1 for the PS1 trying the get the unlimited rocket launcher (I think you had to complete it under an hour or something).
After about 6 attempts I got it and then couldn't be bothered playing again.

I did the same with RE3, constantly playing Mercenaries to get the unlimited Gatling Gun and stuff. And after I got it all I didn't feel like playing the game anymore. >_<
Although RE5 was alright in that regard, getting the infinite rocket launcher wasn't necessarily the last thing you would do in the game, replaying Veteran with that is awesome fun!

Viewtiful Joe by far. In fact, New Game+ was a necessity to actually get V rankings on levels.
Other notable games...
-Valkyria Chronicles
-Dead Space
-Resident Evil (series in general)
-Mass Effect

Using shitty resident evil controls
Resident Evil 4, of course, with your upgraded weapons. I never bothered to get the best ones, I just upgraded the standard stuff.
MGS3 let you collect all of the cutscenes to form a whole movie, and also let you keep any camouflages you found in your previous play through.
I haven't played many games with a good NG+, really. Devil May Cry has you upgrading Dante as the game progresses, and then allows you to replay the earlier levels using your expanded movesets.

Felt the same way about the Laser in RE4.

The DMC New Game+ is (pretty much) required for harder difficulty play through.

I remember my mum walking into the room during the sequence where you are massaging LeBlanc.
"Uhh, What's going on?"
"I'm massaging this woman so I can get a dress sphere"
"Oh"

Somehow I've managed to play VJoe 1+2 twice each but not quite finish either of them. Can't stand puzzles in action games, curse you Capcom. Have to have another go - I assume the new game+ for Viewtiful Joe games is like Devil May Cry where you keep your cool upgrades?
Lufia 2, by far.
What happens? What do you get to do differently the 2nd time around?

If I recall correctly, you get 4x experience.
Fantastic game though.
Chrono Trigger takes the cake for replayability for me. I've finished it over 30 times on the SNES, and about....I think 15 on the DS. Good times.

Yep. Seriously, the first run of the game isn't even meant to be a "real" run anyway, it's just practice for when your character is maxed out.

Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil series with the camo and infinite ammo were kind of cool for a while.
P.N.03 had some pretty great New Game+ rewards.
Really hard to track down a decent copy. It's one of the Cube titles I've been after for a while but I'll guess I'll have to wait.

Mass Effect was pretty fun (cause you were always gonna play through that twice) but MGS1 definitely wins. Except for the first time when I got the boring old Bandanna.

Damn it, stop motivating me. I've already taken V Joe out of the cupboard to play this week, but I'm trying to stay focussed on playing Dead Space again and Link to the Past.
Oh yeah, of course
-Metal Gear Solid : Tactical Espionage Action
Loved that stealth suit, and so much fooling around to do the 2nd 3rd and 4th time through. When my mate told me that the Wolf would pee on you in the cardboard box I thought "yeah right" until I saw it.
-Silent Hill
Finished this 10 times or more, saw every ending, used every stupid weapon, even the near useless laser gun, and slightly fun samurai sword.

MGS: Twin Snakes is one of the only games I've actually gone and replayed several times. Using the Stealth Unit that makes you invisible on Hard mode is very fun.
RE5. I probably played that more than I should've. I unlocked everything, upgraded everything and played it to death. Then before I got bored I tried Professional and got killed on 1-1 cause I crazy-shot the rocket launcher and Sheva would always die.
Ikaruga, GCN. Don't know if this counts, but after every hour you get an extra credit, and after a certain amount you unlock unlimited credits, which ultimately allowed me to beat the game.

Rubbish!
So many people played this game wrong it makes me cry (granted, I don't blame them as the game is represented as a third person shooter... however it isn't one).

I tried so hard with this game, and after using my points to buy everything possible, and getting the Blackbird suit, I still couldn't beat it on normal to get the Papillon suit (Stupid last boss).

True. The last boss was the only one that could be called legitimately challenging.

On MGS, I loved doing the speed run and go a ranking but couldn't submit it on the website :/
On Ikaruga, I rage threw my bad after a few games. How long did you stay at it trying to beat it?

My major issue with PN03 was actually one of control. I beat the game on easy, and got up to the final boss on normal, but kept dying because I couldn't time my combo moves properly as the GCN's shitty d-pad kept registering my movements wrong, and so I'd get killed with that one hit kill beam. An okay game, but yeah, the d-pad can be a fickle bitch at times.

I think you only had to spend 7 hours playing to unlock unlimited credits in Ikaruga, so about that.
The last boss on normal, glad I'm not the only one. Beat him on easy, never on normal.

eternal darkness - I've finished it 3 times to see the true ending. I remember Nintendo gamer saying in their review it was worth it.
tales of symphonia - Starting a new game with bonuses, all ways wanted too many and could never get the xp bonuses unless I finished it again. Another 50 hours? No thanks.
