I've got to meet with some of the guys in the Indie Games section at some point (probably early afternoon Saturday), but I'll be around and about most of the day. Are they still running that gamer challenge thing this year? I should check out the site I guess.

He might not be able to go at all, will confirm tonight.

Jubei; Diz and Rachel are coming again (they were at the quiz table last year, Diz was the older large redhaired dude sitting with his girlfriend, Rachel was sitting with Marb).

Probably won't have the numbers to make a table this year anyway.

Ansked can't go btw.

Anyone going to the opening night?

I'll be there as per usual... with an All Access Pass controlling the groupies by the Rock Band stage (not that I ever really log on here much anymore... I'm simply omnipresent ;) )

To anyone who has been before, is there alot of swag to buy there, game-wise?

I'll be a-going this year with a largish group of friends also coming (but many doing diff. things). I know what a few people from here look like, I might give a shout out (and perhaps a congratulations to you Jubei)

Just a question: What's the sumo-suits thing... about?

and why does the schedule say that the finals for the tourneys are on before the tourneys start?

Zan

I'll be there. I'll be generally playing fighters and will be in one of the quiz teams.

I like how... optional that sounds.
This is the first year since 2002 that I won't be going to Manifest.

Just a question: What's the sumo-suits thing... about?
You put on sumo suits then attempt to push the other guy out of the ring. I'm unfit so it's really tiring but really fun. The first time I tried it, I had been in a car accident the day before. Big mistake.

Sumo Suits = wearing big fluffy sumo suits and trying to push other people in big fluffy sumo suits out of a circle.

Quick note, slightly OT...the AVCON just got a very backhanded plug on the 7PM Project. On the national whip around, the Adelaide guy talked up a place where you can take to inpess your better half...the Adelaide Videogame Convention, apparantly "the largest collection of virgins in Austraila!" Cheap laugh, yes, but ****ing hell dude, its 2009, not 1996! Videogamers=virgins? Has that joke EVER been funny?

Also he said there would be Street Fighter 3 and Halo 4 tournaments. Hmm. Maybe the SF3 part was right now i've read the above, but Halo 4?

What a douchebag.

Anyway, why oh why is there no PVCON!?

I just got back from here, tbh it wansn't as good as I thought it would be but still good. I didn't speak to any Hyper people but I think I saw Mike-Towns and Jubei afew times (I watched some of your Pokemon battle too, Jubei) but I was with an IRL mate and you guys looked busy. I picked up a hoodie too :)
EDIT: After about 3 hours my legs are still aching >_>

JubeiSaotome

Ah, my pokemon loss. It was very good match, though. If you see me around tomorrow, stop me and say hey. I'll be running SF3 Third Strike tomorrow on the TVs that had Soul Calibur, Smash & SF games.

EDIT: Okay full run down of the first day.

We weren't expecting such a turn out, apparently, we've done twice as well as last year. The tournament turnouts were AMAZING and having that many spectators enjoying it was pretty awesome too. I would go as far as likening it to a spectator's sport. SC4 had something like 80 competitors, SF4 had 128 or so and Smash had some 250+.

Some annoyances were kids with R4 cards trying to enter tournaments and getting DQed because LOL PBR can't read them, Raging mothers screaming that their son has been waiting for 2 hours to get their game in a 250+ person tournament and so on.

Teething problems, but we'll know how to do better next year with these experiences.

Jickle
25-07-2009, 10:30 PM
And I'll be interviewing indie games developers, harrassing Matt as he tries to maintain some semblence of sanity in the Rock Band area and trying to convince cosplayers to pose with an issue of Hyper.

Back from the final day- saw Jubei, chis and Mike, and I met jickle! I always imagined you with a beard for some reason. In any case, it was great IMO, what I saw that is.

I thought that the cosplay was great, but more competitors at the main event would have been nice (the sat madman one). Since my friends are so into it, I also saw the lolitas in the morning. Some very nice work.

I did miss out on a kitsune beanie though, rats :(

Sumo suits were cool but there needs to be a competition. NEEDS!! or perhaps I'm too into it. It was fun in any case :)

a couple of my friends also went into the halo 3 teams compo. They came 2nd! I imagine they would have done well at individual if there wasn't the strange decision, when cutting players, to cut the players who signed up FIRST. Bit strange, that.

A good friend was the Hunk cosplayer there. I'd like to cosplay as goku next year if I'm fit enough. Anyway, it was great, I'll be back next year.

Also, muscle march on the main stage was really quite... awesome.

grimace06
27-07-2009, 12:15 AM
I'm stuffed - I have no idea why, but AVCon really tires you out.

I only played in one tournament (HD Remix - had a good contest then got owned), for some reason they didn't have my name up on the screen even though I signed up and I could not be stuffed making a fuss. I also got cut from Halo 3 and got jagged in Mega Man 9 Ultimate Gamer round.

It still had a fantastic atmosphere, the announcer kept things lively and every volunteer I saw was on the ball. Quiz Night with Mike-Towns and Dizrimynthia (sp?) was pretty cool.

Next year, I will make sure there is a FIFA tournament - Attendance would be even higher.

Some recollections:

-Got photos of female Goku and Vegeta, Tetris blocks, the Pyramid Head and friends, Ryu and Chun Li reading Hyper for the mag. Good times.

-Made the horrifying mistake of allowing myself to get dragged to a 'lolita catwalk'. Tried to will myself dead; eventually simply left instead.

-Kingdom Hearts fans are all ****ing mental. Not in the good way.

-The indie games stuff was really great. Which is what I was there for.

-I think I got offered a job with one of the developers, sort of. I'll have to see how that pans out.

- I should have entered a tournament. Except there weren't tournaments for any games I'm good at (which admittedly is limited to maybe four or so games >_>).

-I thought I was pretty nerdy, but now I know that I cannot even compare to the 'true' nerds. Which is comforting.

-Was cool hanging out with all the Hyper people there; wish I had met a few more who I missed out on. Aw well. Next year.

Glad I got you in there dude, we had an awesome table (name sucked though...Bitchell or Madman Sucks was better). The Totally Wild guys were douches too...and as nice as he was, that L kid at our table got annoying.

Soooo yes, Avcon this year was pretty sweet actually. Took a while to get used to the convention centre but it's a nice set up.

On the saturday, pretty much every five minutes I saw someone I knew which was nice, sucks Anksed couldn't go but eh.

Hung out with Diz and Rachel at first, saw Matt, sold him a GH:WT guitar which he MAY or MAY NOT have smashed, walked around with some PCPP dudes (cross forum mettings yo), hung out with Matt and Jickle a few times over the weekend who are awesome guys (they should become a super-hero team or get married or something so they're around eachother alot). Jickles the best mod btw <3.

Sung 'Ballroom Blitz' on stage and got a friend to video it, will upload to youtube when I get it off her since it was THE BEST thing iv'e done ever nearly and was mega fun.

Saw Jubei and Rawk a few times too, who were their usual super-friendly-extremely-likeable selvs even thought they must have been a bit stressed organising things it didn't show.

The Yaoi panel a friend helped organised that I was also gonna be dragged to was shut down by the po-po (phew) who also busted down heavily on alot of shit this year.

Quiz night was great, two people didn't turn up so we got Grimace and a friend of Jubei's on the table. Lolita-nurses are sluts and Totally Wild presenters aren't funny. We didn't do too bad score wise either.

I groped a guy/chick/something in a Pedobear suit, had my opinion I based a few years ago re-affirmed (cosplay is just an excuse for many fat and some very hot girls to dress in very little clothing).

If there's video of the cosplay comp, one part will have the co-announcer girl introducing a girl dressed as Colette and saying 'Colette from Tales of Snifomia'...then my voice shouting 'ITS SYMPHONIA!!!'.

So yes, awesome time and I look forward to hopefully seeing you all next year :).

I got the 7 real old winning the finals on shaky hand-cam, as well as him beating his mum in the semi's.

Starting to wish I went to this year's one. There's probably a fair few 3S and SC4 players from Sydney who would've loved to go. People are still playing those games all the time, but there aren't regular tournaments for anything except SF4 at the moment.

Just wondering, what did the winners get?
