You know what goes on here.
Anyway reason I started thread, Socom for $20 at cdwow (http://www.cdwow.com.au/games/Playstation-3/SOCOM-US-Navy-Seals-Confrontation-Game-Only/product/view/8565729).
Is this worth getting, it seems to have pretty poor reviews but I've heard the issues are either fixed or getting fixed.

I'd worry about that after you play through the game - it'll take you a few weeks with what's already on the disc + all that free DLC! It's massive! Then see if you want more or not.

A dynamically-updated billboard in Saints Row 2 or Rainbow Six Vegas 2 that shows movie a poster for Drag Me to Hell is one thing. These ads slowed down gameplay. That's directly compromising your game's performance to please some advertisers, which is not cool.
I mean sure, it was inevitable that advertisers would eventually turn to video games because goddamn if they don't try to jam advertisements into everything like a three-year-old with a metal fork and house full of power sockets but it should be done without cocking everything else up. Surely that's not an unreasonable request, is it?

I'm still at a loss about how it is a bad thing for the guys at studio liverpool to get some extra funds so they can make even better games
Wipeout has an extensive history of in-game advertising (Red Bull, anyone?) so I don't think the fact that there are ads is the problem.
But artificially extending the loadtime so as to allow an ad is pretty bad form. It ameliorates the quicker load times that are afforded by not using a disc.
And let's not forget that that it's a video and not a static image, which presumably chews up a greater amount of bandwidth for those with a smaller amount of internets.
There is almost a social contract in place that provides that paid content has minimal or no ads. If the fury update was free and you could pay to remove the ads, it might have gone down better. But they didn't and it didn't.
I'm just glad it's gone. I'd hate for load screen ads to become a standard - although it's probably only a matter of time anyway.
Just a question - this was across all Wipeout installs, right?

Advertising is everywhere and I usually don't mind it if it's a background thing because if something I'm interested in catches my eye then I can check it out, otherwise I can easily ignore it. When it pops up in your face in the middhttp://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4190/colesh.jpg (http://www.coles.com.au)le of something you are trying to do then it is disruptive, like those annoying internet ads with the impossible to find close button. Sony took it too far by inserting ads where there were no ads before and it would be akin to a popup advertisement appearing mid gameplay blocking your view.

By the looks of the advert, it didn't effect load times, but the game was programmed to pause the preload while the advert played. I'm sure it would have worked if it were only a single frame advert, not a 30 second video.

If it was a single-framed advert, they could've displayed that and not delayed the load times at all. The fact that the game stops loading to play the ad still qualifies as "affecting the load time" because it adds an unnecessary delay to the loading process.

So the TMNT Turtles in Time Snes/Arcade HD remake is out on the PSN (on the US at least, haven't bothered checking the local store) and I was kinda looking forward to it, that is until I watched the video review on GT and found out that aside from HD visuals, some remade artwork & a tiny bit of voice acting there's nothing new on offer if you've already played the original. Personally I prefer master ninja mode on Sigma 2 over the original 360 version. It actually feels like a challenging but fair game this time, since they don't over spam you with projectiles.
In fact I quite like the changes they gave, in terms of speed and feel it felt closer to NG Sigma 1.
Ayane is quite fun to play as, definitely a short ranged character, but her unlimited exploding shurikens kinda make up for it.

SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 – DRAFT FOR COMMENTS
Objectives of Meeting
Dyer agreed to regular quarterly meetings with SOA
Sony PS3
SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year
Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)
SCEA commented on indexing between PS3 and 360 SKUs, should be around 2:1 to garner most favorable treatment.
Motion Controller
Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.
Alpha Protocol
Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. “Mass Effect felt more RPG.”
Review notes sent to John Merlino a few weeks prior. After meeting Gerald mentioned AP is a high priority for his team.
Planet 51
Sell in of PS3 SKU – SCEA noted that other movie titles on PS3 had underperformed as well (inc. Transformers) this cycle.
Dyer suggests contacting Susan at Walmart and asking what she wants in the pack to sell this SKU (movie tix etc)
Other possibilities are Hybrid movie disc (BD 25 or 50 with Game and Movie on same disc).
Bayonetta
Collectors edition with Bayonetta Action Figure
Novo recommended launching PSN demo around Xmas based off a Jan 5th Ship date with 2-3 week run out to launch.
3-4 weeks is usually ideal demo timing with fresh content every week leading up to launch (trailers, insider video about PG heritage, video blogs).
Vancouver 2010
HOME, Olympic destination would garner a lot of positive attention from SCEA
Should be doing same with Bayonetta, Marvel etc. Easy to launch in all territories.
HOME merchandizing opportunities (clothes etc).
Sonic Racing
Open to DLC to differentiate PS3 SKU – not ratchet and clank but other characters
maybe characters from Rare or Fable universes
Yakuza
Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).
Might need to localize menus at least with subtitles.
SCEA interested in helping on MKTG side if they can have period of exclusivity.
AVP
Another great HOME candidate
AVP avatars
Hybrid BD disc with movie
Iron Man 2
Great candidate for HOME space – explore Tony Stark’s lab etc.
Should have one for Marvel in general.
PSU2
Could do bundle at GameStop with PSP 30-35K units on UMD, Go, or both.
Valkyria 1937
Could bundle with PSP as well.
Vanquish and Aliens: CM
Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassin’s Creed for good examples).
If we offer that SCEA would be really interested in having us at their booth next E3.
Thor
SCEA would like a look at the code soon.
Sonic Anniversary
Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.
“Best of Sonic” for around $99.
SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania’s flip it over/backwards)
PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…
London Olympics
Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration.
DC Digital Titles
If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.
If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.
PSP Titles
For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet – all massive franchises.
SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat.

So I've started playing Yakuza 3 .. pretty awesome, it's got sooo much more content compared to the PS2 games, lots of stuff to do, and everything of course looks and sounds much better!
Gameplay is fairly similar, but a lot of the "extra stuff" is just a lot more in depth, billards, darts, karaoke (LOL), golf, fishing, managing the carbaret club is a lot more detailed now, down to "dressing up" the girls, from make up, to clothes and accesories.
Story wise, I'm early in, Kazuma is running an orphange so it's a change of pace for him for sure, stuff will be happening soon enough I expect.
I'm playing with a english refernce guide, which provides overview of the story, what characters are saying in cut scenes etc. I don't understand Japanese, beyond a few phrases and certainly cant read the text!! So it's not a "full experience" in a sense, but still enjoyable if you like the Yakzua games.
This game deserves an English release though, so much effort has gone into it!

I loved what I played of the demo. Well, combat was a bit dodgy, but I just love the world and the atmosphere! The graphics weren't a huge improvement over the PS2 ones, even though they did look excellent. Any character model that isn't Kazuma is dodgy as!

Oh I'd say the graphics are certainly signficantly better, everything is a lot more alive. It's not the best looking PS3 game, but certainly a signficant step up from the PS2 games.
But yeah, the atmosphere is great, bustling city, very authentic. Though it's funny how whenever you get into a fight, the crowd runs up to you circiling around the fighters, "hey look it's a fight .. lets watch!" LOL! :p

Eh .. with the internet "official" guides are fairly pointless, also in many cases a guide wont help much, because you know what you need to do, but the enemies kick your arse and reading a guide might not help that much :p

In what was pure impulse today, I bought Mushroom Wars... and it's a generally fun game. Haven't spent too much time with it, so won't go into specifics, but it's a good little (simple) RTS so far that keeps things moving at a frantic pace.
Worth a look if you're into the RTS genre.
Just started Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time (despite having about four other games I'm supposed to be playing, not to mention work work to be doing). It's cool, though nothing revolutionary so far. Which works for me. The PS3 Ratchets have been great.

Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 1, Siren Blood Curse, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction (and the sequel Crack in Time)
That's a nice start.

Depends what you like obviously, but Uncharted (if you play it before you play UC2, don't bother after) and inFamous are great third person games. I also hear the newest Ratchet and Clank is very good.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is good, though you really need to brush up on the story first (Gametrailers have a set of videos that'll cover you fine).
Valkyria Chronicles is a bit overrated I think (you heard me Borg and Slashy), but good none the less especially if that's a style of game your into.

I like to think I am pretty well versed in MGS 1 - 3, I'm still pretty lost on the story in 4 though, mainly because I have never bothered to watch a single cutscene after my first play through... they were painful. That didn't stop me from playing through the game 4 or 5 times though, and the integral podcasts were great.
Also I'd like to join the Valkyria Chronicles fanboy club.

Not a game, but I've always wanted a red dual shock (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-zl-49-en-70-3l31.html), good price at the moment too.
And like T Strife said, Demons' Souls. Personally I'd recommend the US version. I'd add Blazblue but I think it's getting released here early next year.

See, i'm really curious, but i'm afraid it'll be a 'hate it' game for me. I'm so time poor these days that too much of a challenge usually leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Blazblue i'm hanging out for the 360 version as i've got my stick for that.

Katamari Forever (http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-lxm-71-bp-49-en-84-j-70-3gv4.html). A pick up and play game which you can enjoy in short bursts of time.
If you haven't got Wipeout HD, you should probably download that. Awesome game, good amount of content for a PSN game, great soundtrack and has a great learning curve across the 8 single player campaigns. Plus Zone it's wicked fun to get absorbed into.

How are you connecting? I use a cross over cable from the PS3 to the laptop to use our 3G internet. I had to set the DNS settings manually to the same as the ISP's to get it to work.
PJ Shooter is great fun, but very short. Very short. Critter Crunch is also very very good.

I ended up buying pixeljunk shooter, reminds me of subterrania on the mega drive but easier, better controlling and worse looking. It's got custom soundtracks which is great because the music's a bit unremarkable. I don't have any other pixeljunk games but as far as other twin stick shooters go this is a bit more interesting and fun to play then most of them imo.
