What's interesting now is that Uruguay, Korea, USA and Ghana are all in one quarter of the knock out stages meaning one of the 4 teams will reach the semis, a huge achievement for any of them.

BORING

Such a shit match between Portugal and Brazil. There were no good plays or tactics, they just played terrible.

Yeah, I posted something about it in the negativity thread. I was pretty amped for it. I thought that since Portugal was almost an impossibility to slip to third that they might try for the win, but at the end of the day, they both just wanted to get through.

Not to mention that all the yellow's in the first half meant for a much more cautious second half.

What's interesting now is that Uruguay, Korea, USA and Ghana are all in one quarter of the knock out stages meaning one of the 4 teams will reach the semis, a huge achievement for any of them.

:(

Just like in '06. If we'd have gotten past Italy the draw was really going to open up for us. Such a shame that Pim ****ed us for the Germany game.

Also, while I'm complaining, is there any team unluckier than Australia at the WC?

'06:
-- Japan: Schwarzer pushed in the back, goal still counted
-- Croatia: Three yellow cards to one guy before send-off
-- Italy: Grossi dive that Sepp Blatter admits was wrong eight months down the track

'10
-- Germany: Cahill's red
-- Ghana: Lee Addy not sent off
-- Ghana: Ghanian striker taken off on stretcher for blood nose in stoppage time, when the play restarts the referee blows his whistle straight away (lost time: two maybe three minutes).

Really disappointed for korea, they really deserved to win that one with the amount of possession they had in the 2nd half. When they equalized I was just hoping they could hold out and force it to a shoot out which I think they could have won. Really sad because I would have loved to see an Asian team go the distance.

The possession percentage probably went largely down to Uruguay playing a wholly defensive formation in the second half, until Korea finally broke through.

That aside, I still do feel that Korea actually played the better game, and that Uruguay lucked out a bit (however, it's hard for me to say this completely free of bias). Their first goal was the worst I've seen since the England/USA game, and really set the tone a bit for the rest of the game. The fact that Korea kept in control, and kept the pressure on in spite of this (although it must be said that they are a very attack-focused team, even in the way they play defense) is something that I'm still somewhat proud of. They had some good shots on goal, but just missed out on the net.

A shame, as I do feel that they could have taken Ghana.

Sorry, but that scoreline doesn't represent the game at all. It should have been 2-2 going into the break, possibly even 3-2 (rooney was called offside when a backpass from a german player went through to him in the first half ..you cannot be offside in that situation, and it would have left him 1v1 on the goalie)

Instead, it was 2-1, and England were left having to chase the game, commit too many players up forward, and that just totally ****ed them.

I'm not watchin the world cup anymore, cause that's ****ed and I'm over the amount of ****ed decisions that have been made

I think the English would surely have changed their defensive style had it been 2-2 though?

The two things I'd say about the Luis Suarez handball is that I for one really like to see someone sacrifice their own game for their team and from talking to people who aren't big soccer fans, I don't think that really does a lot of harm to the success of the game in Australia.

And secondly; Ghana 100% should have scored the goal from the penalty. If they hadn't messed it up, what Suarez did would be a total non issue.

Anyway, Germany were amazing last night. It's hard to not see them going all the way. Spain have certainly not dominated, but I guess you could argue that Torres is probably due to finally do something.

You'd tip Netherlands to get up easily on Uruguay, but funny things happen sometimes.

My tip would be if Germany beat Spain they'll smash the final. But if Spain get up then Netherlands v Spain could be too close to call.

Germany..just pissed on Argentina. The Argentines looked dangerous for maybe 10 of the 90 minutes, and it was right at the start of the second half..I was convinced they were going to score, but the German's defend like the Dutch and counter-attack like the bloody African nations.

A style of football that is well outside how I've previously seen them play, but christ it's effective. Every time they've picked up the 4-0 or 4-1 scorelines, it's because they've scored first, very early, and teams have had to attack more than defend, commit too much up forward and leave themselves well open to some fast paced lethal german attacks.

That Schweinstiger (sp) dude picked apart the Argentinians like ****ing crazy. Their..3rd? goal he just basically ran past about 4 defenders..was great play.

I'm feeling a Dutch world cup this year, or at least a Dutch v Germany final..German's are gonna be a ****ing strong team for the next 3 world cups too, their average player age is something like 24, with their oldest being like 26. That's insane, they're only going to get better

Anyone up to watch the World Cup bid announcement?

Yep.

My tip is England for 2018 and Qatar for 2022

Jay

Qatar worries me as well. :(

Well done Qatar. You've saved this country from itself.

Jay
03-12-2010, 03:50 AM
How? Please explain to me how us hosting the world cup would have been detrimental.

AranchineD
03-12-2010, 03:52 AM
Because the dickhead ratio of our population would have skyrocketed

Something is very wrong about this result. Disgusting.

AranchineD

That's some top notch sportman-like behaviour right there, Spazzallo.

I think I understand why FIFA decided Australia would not be the best place to host.

Yeah because someone else had ten times the $$$

grimace06
03-12-2010, 04:40 AM
I'm sure Qatar will do a fine job as World Cup host.

However, in 2022 we have the World Cup in a country where -

- Drinking is against the law
- Women can't drive or go to stadiums
- Israel is not recognised
- In June and July the temperature hits 50 degrees plus
- They have a population of 1.6 million

Damn that cartoon Kangaroo.

Very disappointing result. We withdrew from the 2018 bid because everyone thought China would get it. The corrupt as ever FIFA gives the 2022 cup to the least suitable/football friendly country on the list.

What a ****ing sham.

Very happy that Qatar won the bid and we didn't, not really in the mood for the drunken rioting and looting (as well as the increased sales in flares) that comes from such a disgusting game like soccer - I'd rather this country be safe thank you very much!

In 2003 we hosted the Rugby World Cup and Australia was descended upon by masses of fat-necked cretins, I didn't like it but it helped the economy.

Yet no FIFA World Cup is a relief to some people.

To anyone who doesn't belong to the crowd of people who shuffle into clubs and begin moving around to flashing lights and the sound of a bass drum, grunting and occasionally muttering "Sick, sick" every time a Lancer drives by

let me guess and you like Rugby "******" league? where they have players fingering each others asses on the field? getting dogs to suck their c*cks ?

Football (yes its football because they kick the ball with their foot, unlike hand egg which is known as rugby) is the original ball sport, it requires skill and strategy...everything Rugby doesn't require.

Hey guys, it's just not a good night out unless it ends with your dick getting sucked by a dog (according to rugby players at least).

5 points from 9 over the Xmas period ain't bad.

If you get some of your injured players back who knows, you might survive on the simple fact that Wolves are shit and Newcastle are fading fast.

Got to watch Australias game against S. Korea in a pub in Korea. They really get into their football over hear, much more than you see in Australia. Apparently for all the Korea games, as long as its not too cold, they show them at the city center on a big screen. Im gonna try go for their next game because it was too cold for the Aus match. Kinda funny being the only one to stand up and clap when we got that goal, I was the only foreinger in the bar and I just happen to be Australian lol

The match was alright though. I do think that Korea played a better game. But our experience, and our size, kept us in it.

Also, we may be getting Torres :) Happy camper I am.

Gold Coast United down Melbourne Victory tonight in an awesome match. I was there and I cannot understand why Gold Coast soccer doesn't get decent crowds. It was an excellent match, very back and forth and a goal in the last 5 minutes. Everything you want.
