I already know this is the wrong place to ask (except I'm hopeful tex is reading this), but is my tax-free threshold already calculated in the group certificate given to me by my primary employer?
For the sake of argument, I earned $30k, which means I can claim $6000 of tax-free earnings.
Will my primary employer quote my gross payments as $30k, or $24k?
Make sure you're actually claiming that threshold! I wasn't because I stuffed the forms up and ended up getting taxed 1/3 of my pay (as if it was a 2nd job) for a month or two until I corrected it. Should get it back soon though!

Anyone know where to get these NBA swagger shirts in OZ?
http://nba.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p7933191nm.jpg
http://nba.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p7552171nm.jpg
If I order from NBA.com, it is $19.99 US per shirt, but the shipping charge is $46.48 US. So all up it's $86.75 AUD for two shirts.
It's not for me. I'm no a basketball fan, but one of my brothers is.

Easy, buy the game on the PS3 :p
Unscaled graphics, load times and DLC shoved in my face? No thanks.
Silly me, found out the menu slides with completed races, map and an options menu.

I'm getting a $4,700 tax return. :D
(Though a large tax return only reflects a disproportionately large amount of tax being paid during the year).
The staggered tax brackets are extremely important for vertical equity (ie ensuring that people pay a fair amount of tax depending on what they earn) which is why many western nations use them. They also dramatically increase the prospect of getting a tax return since most businesses take tax out of your pay at the bracket your projected annual income for that pay would put you in and ignore the fact that that different portions of your income are taxed at different rates.
As far as TAT's question goes, the $6000 tax free theshold does not change your taxable income so much as it changes the rate you pay tax (eg 0% for that amount) so your employer wouldn't take it off your income. But if sensibly didn't tick the box when you started work to say that you wanted to claim the threshold, you should still get a good return.

Thinking about getting Bruce Lee's 'Fist of Fury', 'Big Boss' & 'Way of the Dragon' on either DVD or bluray, DVDs are $30 shipped or blu-rays are $54 shipped
I've never seen any of them but I liked 'Enter the Dragon', are these movies just as good?
Pai Mel

Why not rent them first and see. Imo $54 is expensive for one movie. I thought the more expensive Blu-rays peaked at around $35 for the UK versions? Should spend the money on Ip Man 2 instead. It's out on Blu-ray in HK.

$54 was for all 3 on blu-ray, not just 1 ;) (US$14ea). And it was $30 for all 3 on DVD. If you look at the 'latest dvd/bluray purchases' I skipped out on Big Boss & got the other 2 DVDs for $17 shipped

igotnewsuper8systemWRONG!
17-07-2010, 11:05 AM
See I can't vote for Gillard, because she clearly isn't against gay marriage, she is just pretending to be so she gets votes. She's too worried about trying to play everyone so she can be president, **** it Gillard, come out and say your ok with gay people and I'll vote for you.
edit: I forgot I can't vote for Gillard because of the internet filter.
texta
17-07-2010, 12:01 PM
Also you can't vote for Gillard because you don't live around Werribee in Victoria.
There's no such thing as a perfect political party, so you're always going to have to weigh up the good against the bad. But the issues you're talking about; gay marriage and internet censorship; I'd at least be very cautious of voting for the Liberals ahead of Labor on either of those.
For Gay Marriage: The Libs are equally opposed to it. But are more substantively against homosexual rights reform. In the 12 years they were in office they did virtually nothing, while within a year of coming in Labor made 100 legislative changes that ensure that homosexual couples are treated the same as heterosexual couples by the government.
Gay marriage is an important symbolic step and every Labor State Conference we pass a motion in support of it, but the way the law has changed, marriage itself is really little more than symbolism. De facto couples are treated exactly the same for tax, superannuation, family law etc.
And on the issue of Internet Filtering, if you want to talk about rights, I would be much more worried by what occurred in the last 12 years of Liberal Party rule than anything that Labor are planning.
Under the Liberal Party, federal police got the power to detain people without access to a lawyer or even being able to call anyone to say what's happened. You would literally just disappear.
The Howard Government dramatically ramped up the use of conclusive certificates that exempt the government from Freedom of Information requests to the point where the Government was able to keep anything they wanted secret.
And on the actual filter, there is no guarantee that the Liberals won't put one in either. What we do know since Abbott took on Opposition Leader is that he has rewarded the Christian Right members of his party like Sophie Mirabella, George Brandis, Eric Abetz etc. So if you elect a Liberal Government, you're electing the champions of the Australian Christian Lobby into a position of power and irrespective of whether we get the filter or not, what we will get is further nannying and fewer civil liberties.
So if you don't want to vote Labor, that's fine. We've certainly made our mistakes over the last 3 years. But there is an increasingly wide philosophical division between the centre-left Labor party and the Christian Right Liberal party and unless you share their values, I would be very careful about preferencing the Libs above Labor.
If you vote Green then everyone else, then Labor, then Liberal at least you keep them out.
tl;dr Labor aren't perfect but the Libs are worse.

So which one will give more funding to science?
texta
17-07-2010, 12:37 PM
That's a tough question since "science" is a pretty broad field. Australia's net spending on science has increased under Labor but that is a combination of increased infrastructure spending and some decreases to science bodies like the CSIRO.
But for single issue funding questions, it's hard to say how each party would deal with the issue in light of the current economic circumstances. Given the Liberals behaviour when they first took office, it's fair to say that it's likely that they would have made cuts too to tackle the GFC.
In general terms Labor is characterised by its commitment to education and in very loose theory as being more of a big government than the Liberal Party (ie in theory Labor would take more in taxes but spend more, the Libs would take less and spend less. But in practice the Libs have adopted the same approach as Labor.)
But when it comes to science, Labor are committed to key infrastructure projects like the NBN which the Liberals outright oppose. So it's likely that science would benefit more from the Labor party (and I'm sure that Liberals would make the argument that that benefit would be outweighed by costs to non-scientists or something).

Super8: Labor punch puppies every day
Texta: I think you'll find that the Liberals have been known to punch both puppies and kittens on a semi regular basis, in fact the first puppy was actually punched by a Liberal party minister upon taking office so they are officially known for beginning the whole process and any imitation or continuation on this policy by Labor is simply following established protocol.
Labor have a commitment to stopping criminals, people in prison are proof of the success of this commitment. The puppy in question has been shown to be of very ill character with a history of biting and sniffing the wrong butts within the puppy community so I think it's safe to assume that any interaction with these puppies by Labor are in fact covered by their successful prosecution of criminals and are further proof of their commitment to protecting the community.

Another similar Q:
Picked up Veronica Mars (+ 30 Rock S1-3). I might go back to JB tomorrow & pickup Angel Seasons 1-5 but I'll need something else for the 6th boxset to get another free. Is Supernatural worth my time? I was looking at 'The Unit' & 'Rome' or 'Chapelle's Show S1'
Or maybe I'll just pluck off all 7 seasons of Buffy so I get the complete Buffy + Angel combo for $200 which is good value but also getting expensive....curse you JB!

2(x)ist is a brand aimed squarely at the gay dollar. Their image is based around hot guys who just happen to be wearing the underwear, as can be seen by the guy's hand covering most of it anyway in an attempt to look provocative.
So my point is, it doesn't matter what the underwear actually looks like, it's being bought by gay guys who think brand are everything.
