Anyone happen to know if replacing a car's tires will also involve a wheel realignment at the same time? Sort of need to do both which I've been puttign off for a long time. Admittedly hoping if I get the tires replaced they'll get realigned.

Is this Swine Flu for reals or have we just been getting sick from drinking recycled sewage water? I've been getting a recurring flu three times already, for about a month. Each one different from the last. The latest has me coughing all the time and I can't stop craving for food.
btw, I will post up a photo of the Hyper arrows soon(ish), that is if Hyper won't sue me for breach of copyright.

The swine flu is no more deadly than normal flu (which can also kill those that are very young, very old or have existing medical conditions). The media just love hyping up a story. If you're normally a heathy person and don't normally get sick, don't worry about the swine flu.

Wouldn't it be better to be infected with the current strain (then let it runs it's course, being cured in a few days) since the next few strains will be stronger?

The reason why we get the flu all the time, is because the flu virus mutates so rapidly (and spreads so rapidly), our bodies have to recognize and fight the new strain each time, and the defenses our bodies developed last time are fairly useless.
I imagine Pai Mel getting three diffferent flus is just a case of awful luck, but it's certainly possible, because the flu changes so rapidly. (kinda explains why it was different each time)
That's what I understand of it, at least.

Cold: Runny nose, cough etc
Flu: Fever, vomiting, etc

Swine flu is potentially much more deadly because we have some immunity to the normal flu, but very little to swine flu. That's why major flu pandemics in the past have killed so many people (eg Spanish flu killed between 20 and 100 million).

As you said it's potentially more dangerous, but I'd like to see stats from the last 6 months from people that have died from normal flu verses swine flu, especially since the media were talking swine flu up like the second coming of the Black Death.

It's more about risk management than anything else though. Regular flu is going to have the exact same impact, while swine flu could literally kill millions of people. Imagine you're in Government: how do you think the voting public would react if something came along and killed millions of people and you did nothing despite being warned?

I never visited a doctor so can't really say for sure it was the flu, but basically everyone in my family have been coughing as well.
The second time I had it I think I had mild diarrhoea. No vomiting. Not much of a runny nose. If I had a fever I never noticed it but I could just feel that my body wasn't 100%. But yeah it's probably just a recurring cold then.

Another question: Is postage prices just a matter of luck?
Last week I sent off a bundle of games/DVDs and only got charged as a large letter each for ~$1.65.
But yesterday I had another bundle of games/DVDs and got charged as a small parcel for each one at $4.35, which is more than double the price.
I use bubblewrap and wrapping paper, and a layer of clear packaging tape but my packaging methods are consistent and the same thickness each time.
Do you think it would be better for me to just buy a sheet of stamps and set my own prices (with honesty though)?
I have an accurate small digital scale so I can measure the weight of each item and affix stamps accordingly. Or does each item have to be evaluated by a postal clerk?
I charge $5 postage on ebay but if an item sells for 55 cents, after PayPal and eBay fees, and getting charged $4.35 postage, I'm not left with much. :(

I agree, it pays to be careful. I got tested after one of the girls at discovered I did have swine flu. Sadly the test took ages, and I was asymptomatic at that point so I went anyway. If I had known to get tested sooner I probably could've saved a lot of little kids from being sick and missing out on valuable therapy time. I reckon I infected a good 10-12 kids with what I thought was just a cold!
However, my mum got sick off me and ended up taking a week off work because one of the women's husbands at her work is having a lung operation soon. You never really know with these things. If she went to work, it could easily go viral and end up killing her colleague's husband.

It should be based on weight and whether it will fit into a standard postbox (they should have a little stencil thing to test that).

Are posties allowed to leave registered post just sitting on your doorstep? Twice in the past month it has happened. First a package containing $100 bucks worth of dvds was left outside the door all day, and a few days ago an academic transcript was left out side the door in the rain all day.

From memory the option to do that is made by the person arranging delivery. There are different kinds of registered post; the leave at the door but delivery is gauranteed to be quick kind and the produce several kinds of ID and bend over while I put my rubber glove on kind.

My brother had some electronics of some description left balancing precariously on top of our mail box (ours has a knob on top, so it probably took them more time to get it stay there than it would have to walk it to the door).
Luckily we were home that day.

Generally my PO keeps all registered post even if it's not going in my PO box. I always have to sign on delivery but after the first 5 packages I got they don't bother asking my license.

In my case it was the exact same PO but just a different person who served. With ten items posted the difference is $16.50 versus $43.50.
Would you be happy receiving games/dvds in just cardboard? I think cardboard is protective enough. I mean you have the actual DVD case protecting the disc as well. But in the case of Xbox 360 game cases, it seems they cheapened out and used thinner, lighter plastic, compared to a Wii game case or DVD Amaray. If I used cardboard the parcel would most certainly be under 2 cm thick. With bubble wrap the parcel verges on 2cm.

Legally, register post needs to be signed for, but you'll find that a lot of packages are not sent registered post, so the postie just leaves it where they can, which I hate, especially since I quick often order $100+ of books or games through the internet and they leave them by the front door in view of everyone and we live down the road from a high school. I'm suprised nothing's gone missing yet.

In my area, it is not Australia Post employees who deliver regular or registered parcels but a contracted delivery person. It's only on very rare occasions when the Australia Post postman that delivers the mail will ring my doorbell to get my signature.

Most the time they jsut leave the card or if it's small enough it gets wedged inside the electricity box.
I'm fortunate enough to live just down the road from the post office so most the time I just pop down and collect it from there.

We went and asked at the post office. Apparently they no longer give out those little red and white slips to tell you to pick stuff up any more, they just dump it on your doorstep. Their "reason" is for it to be more convenient. I'd say the real reason is either to cut costs or they're just lazy...

So really there is no good reason to send via Registered Post anymore which costs an additional $2.80, unless you specifically want PayPal protection on your order.

Even Amazon.com works out cheaper than buying a book in Aus, and you get it quicker too, even if postage does cost you a fair bit. I read a lot of Star Wars books, but to wait for them to come out over here is a long wait indeed. As an indication, I bought a new SW book from Amazon (ended up costing around $40-$45 Australian) and I'd finished reading it about two months ago and I've only just seen it in book stores here now for $55 (it's a hard cover).

A question for any resident mathematicians, kinematics experts, etc.
In a 2D Euclidean space, there exists a point P, which is moving with respect to time, t, at a rate of u units of measurement per increment of t*, in direction θ from the y axis**. P's x and y co-ordinates for when t=0 are given. Further, points A and B are each found at constant displacements from P, which are also given in x and y parts. Points A and B form a line, AB.
There exists another point, Q, for which initial x and y coordinates are given, which is moving at rate v in direction φ.
The question is, provided this information, how does one find out when and where point Q crosses line AB?
*Make the unit of measurement metres, and of time seconds, if it helps.
**Angles in degrees, if the distinction is important. Measured from the y axis, a zero-value angle is directly up (ie a point moving at a positive rate in a 0 degree direction is gaining y).

Anyone know the best (cheapest) way to buy Windows 7? Full version, not an upgrade, preferbably not OEM (but don't mind too much unless there's limitations). Would USA/UK versions work ok or do I have to buy locally?

There's no limitations on OEM. You just don't get the fancy retail box and manuals. OEM you usually have to buy with some hardware, but you could probably buy something like a hard drive, USB cable, you know cheap stuff... and afaik it doesn't matter what country you buy Windows from.
As people have found out with Vista, you can just use the cheaper Upgrade versions with a install workaround to end up with the Full version. I hope that is the case again.
At the Microsoft Store (http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Windows-7/category/102?WT.mc_id=winonline_win7promo):
The Full version of Windows 7 Professional is AUD $357.10
The Upgrade version of Windows 7 Professional is AUD $238.06
Important Pre-Order Details:
• Windows 7 will be available starting Oct 22, 2009.
• On October 22nd, 2009, we will send you an email that gives you download instructions or a shipment notification, depending on your selected delivery type.
• Your card will not be charged until your order is shipped or the product is made available for download.
• See the Pre-Orders section for additional details.
With the current exchange rate it may be a good idea to buy now, although who knows, mebbe Australian dollar will keep rising! There were some pre-order deals going last week. You just missed out.
Or you could wait till you upgrade to a nehalem-based system and get Windows 7 as part of the package.
I only just installed Windows 7 RC on the weekend. I was having a lot of trouble first, and only managed to install once I swapped out my IDE optical drive for a SATA drive. But I think it's because ASUS motherboards' Marvel IDE chipsets have conflicts with Windows installation.

Ok, I need an answer to this.
Why exactly do people bother buying new versions of windows?
I mean new video games, I can understand, but why upgrade something that works fine already into something you know is going to be buggy as hell, and even PAY for it?
Halt, Hammerzeit
11-08-2009, 08:08 AM
I used to think that as well. I never wanted to upgrade to Vista until I bought a new computer that had Vista on it. It just runs so much better than XP, runs faster, networks a lot easier, you don't have to reset after make changes much anymore.
I didn't think I'd use a lot of the other features, like getting a preview window when you run your mouse over the programs in the task bar, so it is worth upgrading for that, but, after using the Windows 7 beta, I'd recommend waiting for Windows 7 to be released. I've never seen or hear of an OS being so bug-free in the testing stage. It's such a stable platform and improves on things in Vista. It also does things like combining of quick launch and the task bar into one. It allows you to 'pin' programs to the task bar (effectively making a quick launch bar) and IE actually lets you view all the tabs when you hover your mouse over the icon on the task bar (I'm hoping this means that Firefox will get that feature in future releases).
There's plenty of reasons to upgrade this time round, and those are just the ones that I can see and I'm not a computer geek (Fenrir could probably tell you more about the inner workings of W7) and I'd say upgrade to W7)

And the obvious reason to upgrade to Windows 7 is that it's much better than Vista.
At the end of the day you're getting better functionality and usually improved performance and especially if you use your computer for more than playing video games, both those things can be a big help.

Well we have 64-bit processors and can afford more RAM than 4GB, not to mention some of us are running Quadcore CPUs. We want an OS that can make the most of that hardware.
64-bit XP is just a big pile of dog turd. So your choice really is only to upgrade to Vista or 7 or go *nix.
Also if you are a multi-platform person (I use Mac as well), then XP loses even more lustre.
Plus we can't let Gates/Jobbs go poor, heavens no!

Velocity, momentum is calculated off it after all
Thinking 3NF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_normal_form), I like it.
Derivation works both ways, though:
p = mv
v = p/m
Both have relevance separate from derivation, too - velocity to displacement, collision prediction, etc; momentum to dynamics, and being subject to a conservation law.
Momentum because it contains more information than velocity.

Elaborate?v=m/s, p=kg*m/s
You're probably going to need to have the mass of individual things stored somewhere anyway, so I think the difference is ultimately trivial.
EDIT: Actually in thinking about it, it might be easier to use velocity since if you want to work out other things like acceleration or displacement the maths is going to be more traditional (and perhaps slightly simpler).
Fenrir
15-08-2009, 08:24 PM
v=m/s, p=kg*m/s
For a moment there I was thinking, "velocity = mass/displacement?"
Mass still needs to be stored in order to make sense of momentum (ie determine velocity, hence determine displacement and predict collisions), so it's not storing more information - just "different" information.
EDIT: didn't notice your edit; I should've replied earlier, or refreshed before, or something. Further edit coming, probably.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10591267
A man who stole a wad of cash from a Christchurch record store gave police an easy trail to follow after reserving a Pink Floyd album and leaving his name and phone number in a book behind the counter. The thief, a regular customer, was also caught in the act by CCTV cameras, Penny Lane Records owner Garry Knight said.
The footage showed the man waiting until a store employee was busy with another customer before hitting a button to open the cash register, grabbing a wad of $10 and $20 notes and running out of the store about 5.15pm on Friday. Only minutes earlier, he had taken a copy of Pink Floyd's The Wall album to the desk and asked staff to hold it for him, leaving behind his contact details.
Mr Knight said the man had to rank among the stupidest of thieves."It's got to be up there as one of the dumbest things." Mr Knight would not say how much cash was taken, but as it was late in the day, the takings in the register would have been substantial.

I bought a pair of shoes from Athlete's Foot about 1-2 weeks ago (still got the receipt) and after wearing them a couple of times (maybe 4-5 days) I think the shoe size is too big since it feels like my heel is going to pop out despite tying my shoes as tight as I can get it. I actually had them measure up my foot properly with the machine & everything so I thought there wouldn't be any problems and I suppose its my fault not noticing it straight away
Question is, do you think they'll still accept a return? I don't think they will unless the shoes suddenly fell apart or something
AranchineD

If they don't accept the return you can always just put an insole in the shoe to fill it out a bit more until you have to (or want to) buy a new pair, or just shove something in the toe of the shoe so it keeps your foot back and makes it fit better.

I'm already using an insole in the shoe (XL size) :p Or do you mean an insole on top of the other insole? I've thought about shoving something in the end of the toe but I recently bought new shoes to stop my feet getting worse and would much rather get an exchange. Thicker socks haven't really helped either

I find thick socks to be crap for big shoes. I just wear the shoes until their ill-fittedness feels normal and well-fitted shoes feel small.

/backslash: how worn are the shoes?
- Clean the outsole and if you think it looks brand new, then go for the exchange.
- When you bring it to the store, (if they ask) just say you wore it around the house (a few times) to try to wear it in before you wore it out
- and if you're the type of person: have a rant on how you find it strange that the computer and sales assistant didn't get your size right (lay the guilt trip on them)
Retailers are usually not hesitant when it comes to exchanges with products that are in resellable condition (they are when it comes to refunds)
good luck!

Athlete's Foot have a pretty good return policy, 30 days I think so you should be fine. As long as the shoes are still in good condition you should be able to swap them.

Cheers guys, I feel slightly less worried now! The only thing that looks worn is the label on the sole for some reason even though I've barely used it. The other pair of shoes I bought on the same day (also too big) have had a custom sole put in so the original has been unused

The secret to buying shoes is to buy a pair that feels a little tight and uncomfortable initially when you demo walking around as in no time at all, you'll wear into them.

Hopefully someone here has some idea but I doubt it...
I'm looking for somewhere in Brisbane that teaches absolute beginner English, for a friend at work. She's Portuguese.
I have no idea where to look, Google doesn't seem to be helping much. Going to try ask at IML at UQ on Tuesday as well.
But yeah if anyone has any idea I would be much obliged.

Check for a local TAFE. They usually run English courses. Give them a ring, though. TAFE websites are notoriously bad.

This semester I have two subjects. Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management. I am thinking of dropping Org Behaviour as the style of assessments are fairly strange. You need to write assignments (essays) in the form of a learning log. So stuff like what we have learnt, how it relates to you and your studies, what actions you are planning on taking. It's really throwing me off.
HRM is fairly straight forward on the other hand.
AranchineD
23-08-2009, 11:28 AM
Hmm. Well, if you can pick up another subject in it's place I'd say do it.
Otherwise, if you don't have to get a good mark in it for your degree then you could just put up with it, if you're still getting something out of the subject.

24-08-2009, 07:31 AM
But if I had the choice of the two I'd go for OB because it'd touch on HR more than HR would touch on OB.
Plus OB focuses more on structure, processes, policies and procedures; which if you get right, makes HR so much more moot.
Plus; people suck in general.

I'm going to Melbourne for a few days in a couple of weeks, tagging along with a couple of American mates. Usually when I am in Melbourne I just party hard at night and recover during the day, which I'm sure there will be plenty of this time around, but is there anything else I can show them/do in the daytime hours?
Also any recommendations on drinking spots (its been a year or so since I have been down)?

When I was there I did a walking tour of Melbourne that started from the tourist information centre in Federation Square. It was about $15 from memory and took most of the morning and gave you a bit of history of Melbourne. It was quite well done.
I also did a tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol, mostly because I was interested in Ned Kelly.
There was also the MCG tour and Sports Museum tour, but I doubt an American would be as interested in that, and there's an old tram that plays speaking tracks that tells you a bit about the area as well.
Pretty random question but in the original Quake how do you change the colour of your name?
I know in Quake 3 its ^1 or ^2 etc but I'm making a mod for Q1 and I never played it back in the day so I'm not sure how to do it.
